The Impact Of Social Media Influencers On Contemporary Art Trends - A Comprehensive Analysis, Babette Meng
The Impact Of Social Media Influencers On Contemporary Art Trends - A Comprehensive Analysis, Babette Meng
MA Theses
Social media have revolutionized the contemporary art market, how artists promote their work, how collectors initially find pieces, and how art is valued and sold. This study investigates the effects of social media on the art industry using a mixed methods approach consisting of qualitative case studies enabled by thematic analysis and quantitative survey with statistical correlation analysis. Key findings from this paper show that with social media, the artist's visibility is vastly increased, direct-to-collector sales are promoted, and dependence on traditional galleries is reduced. The study considers the position of art influencers in the process of art promotion, which …

The Bridge-Builder Project: Social Justice Bridge-Builder- A Model For Addressing Racial Justice, Marguerite Williams
All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The Bridge-Builder Project demonstrates that social justice is based on God’s Character, God’s Covenant, and God’s Call. God consistently addressed inequities affecting the oppressed, the orphaned, the imprisoned, and the widowed. Social justice has been associated with political parties; however, it is clearly reflected in God’s view of humanity. For the Christian, our frame of reference begins with God. Scripture offers a clear framework. That framework begins with understanding humanity through the lens of the One who made us – God. God created each diverse human being in His Image—Imago Dei. Based on this premise, God values humanity and that …

Racial Disparities In Public Education: Examining The Black-White Achievement Gap, Cheryl A. Jackson
All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study examines the persistent achievement gap between African American males and their White peers in public schools, focusing on how historical and systemic factors continue to shape educational outcomes. The research aims to understand the complex interplay among social, institutional, and historical influences that contribute to academic disparities. Using historical analysis and literature review, the study examines issues such as inequitable school funding, biased disciplinary practices, and structural barriers in education. Findings indicate that African American males encounter significant challenges, including limited access to high-quality instruction and disproportionate disciplinary actions. Additionally, the lasting effects of historical injustices, such as …

Despite the growing interest in social justice activities, there is a lack of empirical evidence regarding their impact on various stakeholders, particularly social media users. We gathered longitudinal data from the NFL's @inspirechange X (former Twitter) account, a designated social justice communication handle, between August 2019 and March 2023. During this timeframe, the account garnered 20,967 comments (including original tweets and retweets) from 11,481 distinct users, but our analysis focused on 5851 comments deemed usable from 3632 unique users. Drawing on the social exchange theory, sentiment analysis, and thematic analysis, this study examines social media users' sentiments toward the NFL's …
Informative Jury Disagreement, Roy Baharad
Informative Jury Disagreement, Roy Baharad
Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series
The article introduces a counterintuitive argument, contending that jury disagreement on the defendant’s guilt—a nonunanimous conviction—may well provide a more informative signal, compared to consensus. Because stronger consensus implies higher likelihood of herding, it is shown that beyond some threshold, further accumulation of votes to convict would carry negligible epistemic contribution, barely enhancing the posterior probability of guilt. On the other hand, while dissenting votes provide a direct signal of innocence, they indicate that herding has not been involved in the decision-making process, hence increase the epistemic contribution of any vote generated by said process— including votes to convict—and may …

Private Wrongs, Public Impact: The Case For A Tort Of Family Violence, Pahul Gupta
Private Wrongs, Public Impact: The Case For A Tort Of Family Violence, Pahul Gupta
Canadian Journal of Family Law
This research paper investigates the adequacy of current civil actions available against a particular form of family violence: intimate partner violence (“IPV”). The paper identifies the torts which are most commonly applicable in the IPV context and argues that they fail to capture the cumulative harm associated with such conduct. It identifies the shortcomings of such causes of actions and analyzes the multifaceted factors contributing to the limitations and challenges IPV victims face when pursuing such claims.
The paper provides a brief background on the historical and legal context of family violence before moving on to identifying the various causes …

Intersecting Abuse Of People And Animals In Practice: Implications Of The Connection Between Intimate Partner Violence And Animal Abuse For Family Justice Professionals, Amy Fitzgerald, Valerie Monckton, Kerri Thomson, Kendra Coulter
Canadian Journal of Family Law
According to recent estimates, 60% of Canadian homes have at least one cat or dog, and the number continues to climb. Often considered family members, these animals are vulnerable to family violence. Their presence can also render human victims of violence more vulnerable: research indicates many victims delay leaving their abuser out of concern for their animals or consider returning to the abusive relationship because their abuser has the animal companions. Despite a substantial body of literature documenting the link between intimate partner violence (IPV) and animal abuse, research has not examined how family law professionals encounter and deal with …
Worthless? Victims Of Family Violence And The (Non)Payment Of Child Support, Joanna Radbord
Worthless? Victims Of Family Violence And The (Non)Payment Of Child Support, Joanna Radbord
Canadian Journal of Family Law
This article details the profound challenges experienced by victims of family violence seeking to access child support. Survivors face physical, mental, and financial barriers to obtaining support. Despite its recognition as the “right of the child,” many survivors forego an application for support altogether. For those victims who bravely attempt to make a claim, they generally confront further abuse and disempowerment within the adversarial litigation process. They often face an overwhelming power imbalance in negotiation, undermining their psychological and financial well-being. If survivors obtain an agreement or order for child support, child support regularly goes unpaid. Given the flaws in …

Data-driven decisions, often based on predictions from machine learning (ML) models are becoming ubiquitous. For these decisions to be just, the underlying ML models must be fair, i.e., work equally well for all parts of the population such as groups defined by gender or age. What are the logical next steps if, however, a trained model is accurate but not fair? How can we guide the whole data pipeline such that we avoid training unfair models based on inadequate data, recognizing possible sources of unfairness early on? How can the concepts of data-based sources of unfairness that exist in the …

"What Is Title Ix? What's It Mean?": An Instrumental Case Study In Today's Secondary Schools, Kristin Haggerty
West Chester University Doctoral Projects
Sexual harassment and assault, as defined by Title IX, are widespread issues in middle and high schools, yet schools often fail to provide sufficient education to students and staff about the policy and its protections (Grant et al., 2019). Title IX is a federal law designed to ensure fair and equal treatment of students and employees in educational settings while also overseeing the handling and adjudication of sexual misconduct allegations (Klusas, 2003). This study was conducted using instrumental case study research. 36 staff members from the middle school, high school, and administration of a mid-sized school district in Southeastern Pennsylvania …

Evaluating Bias In Facial Recognition Datasets : A Study On Representation And Classification Fairness, Milyonta Williams
Evaluating Bias In Facial Recognition Datasets : A Study On Representation And Classification Fairness, Milyonta Williams
Theses
Facial recognition technology is widely used in security and identity verification but exhibits biases that disproportionately impact certain demographic groups. This thesis examines racial and skin tone biases in commonly used facial recognition datasets, assessing their influence on classification models. Using manual classification via the Fitzpatrick scale and numerical skin tone representations from LAB color values, we identified significant dataset imbalances, with lighter skin tones (Fitzpatrick Types 1 and 2) overrepresented and darker tones (Types 4-6) underrepresented. Model evaluation using Random Forest, SVM, and XGBoost showed an overall accuracy of 72\%, but classification for Asian individuals was notably weaker (0.45 …

Limited research has examined the possible synergistic interrelationships between serious bacterial infections (SBIs) of the heart (i.e., endocarditis), bone, spine, brain, or joints (e.g., osteomylelitis) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) infections. We examined whether syndemic interactions existed between SBI, HCV, and substance-use-related factors in rural communities, hypothesizing that injection-mediated risks elevated the likelihood for both SBIs and HCV infections, which could be exacerbated by synergistic biological–biological or biological and social interactions. We calculated the prevalence ratios (PRs) of past-year SBI associated with each risk factor in separate models. Effect modification among significant risk factors was assessed using multiplicative interaction. Among …
Our Stories Of Coming Home: Project Rebound Student Experiences At Cal Poly Humboldt And College Of The Redwoods, Eddie Peña
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
The explosion of the prison population over the last 50 years has dramatically increased the number of people in the reentry process. Understanding the reentry process, and how students connected to Project Rebound experience reentry is crucial to developing prescriptive services that will support student success. The study used semi-structured interviews and open-ended questions. The questions focused on the time before release, immediately after release, and future goals. Interviews were coded line-by-line and themes were discovered using a modified Grounded Research approach. Results suggest being incarcerated and the reentry process comes with mixed emotions. Students felt anxious and afraid in …
State Constitutional Development And The Criminal Procedure Revolution, Quinn Yeargain
State Constitutional Development And The Criminal Procedure Revolution, Quinn Yeargain
Georgia Law Review
Questions about which rights, liberties, and guarantees are included in the U.S. Constitution’s protections, and how they are protected, have long produced animated debate among scholars, judges, and advocates. Yet, while today’s debates may seem familiar, they take place at a perilous time in our country’s trajectory. We are six decades removed from the Warren Court’s criminal procedure revolution, and just a few years into the Roberts Court’s full-throated embrace of originalist jurisprudence. Whether many of the protections we have come to know and recognize from the Warren Court—the exclusionary rule, Miranda warnings, and Gideon’s mandate—are subjected to re-evaluation …
Rescuing State Punishment Clauses From The Deferential Doctrine, William W. Berry Iii
Rescuing State Punishment Clauses From The Deferential Doctrine, William W. Berry Iii
Georgia Law Review
A number of state appellate courts read any sentencing decisions by lower courts that are “within the statutory sentencing limits” as constitutional or presumptively constitutional under both the Eighth Amendment and the punishment clause in their state constitutions. This “deferential doctrine” ignores both the individual rights of criminal defendants and the role of state courts in placing some constitutional limit on the sentencing schemes adopted by state legislatures.
In an age of mass incarceration and excessive spending on punishment, this blind deference state courts show state legislatures should end. This article demonstrates how and why state courts should use the …
