“A Fucked Up Kind Of Feminine”: Monstrous Femininities In The Horror Film, Sam Armbruster Jan 2015

“A Fucked Up Kind Of Feminine”: Monstrous Femininities In The Horror Film, Sam Armbruster

Theses & ETDs

Horror is a genre of film that is widely accessible and enjoyed by a wide range of people. This thesis explores the ways the genre portrays various types of monstrous femininities, particularly those of adolescent girls and transgender feminine people, and the implications of those portrayals. Carrie (1976), Heavenly Creatures (1994), Ginger Snaps (2000) situate their protagonists as navigating oppressive situations through world building and the construction of idealized lives, which ultimately break down, resulting in displays of murderous rage. Psycho (1960), Dressed to Kill (1980), and The Silence of the Lambs (1991) establish a connection between murderous pathology, transgender …

Dehumanization In Varlam Shalamov’S Kolyma Tales, Alan Sachnowski Jan 2015

Dehumanization In Varlam Shalamov’S Kolyma Tales, Alan Sachnowski

Theses & ETDs

This thesis seeks to interpret Varlam Shalamov’s cycle of short stories Kolyma Tales through the unifying theme of dehumanization. Chapter one examines historic and artistic interpretations of Shalamov’s work in order to substantiate the methodology used in interpreting the tales with the notion of dehumanization. The chapter then supplies an analysis of “Lend-Lease” in order to demonstrate the methodology. Chapter two analyzes “Sententious” by tracking the narrator’s body in relation to his surroundings in a story of unusually long duration relative to the quick moments captured in other tales. The story is emblematic of a reversal of dehumanization to the …

Removing The Insecurity Bottleneck To Development In Colombia: A Case Study, Peter Austin Raab Jan 2015

Removing The Insecurity Bottleneck To Development In Colombia: A Case Study, Peter Austin Raab

Theses & ETDs

The Colombian civil war began its 51st year in 2015. The duration of the conflict has had permanent negative effects on Colombia’s economic development. The negative effects range from lower education levels directly caused from violent actors, to lower government spending on social programs resulting from the redirection of government funds toward the military. The primary national policies addressed in this thesis are Plan Colombia, The Pastrana Peace Negotiations, the Justice and Peace Law of Colombia, the Victims and Land Restitution Law, and the development plan Prosperity for All. The development of security legislation has reduced the scope of the …

Of Mafia And Men: Observing Transnational Organized Crime Structures In The Federal Republic Of Germany, Megan Thompson Jan 2015

Of Mafia And Men: Observing Transnational Organized Crime Structures In The Federal Republic Of Germany, Megan Thompson

Theses & ETDs

This thesis examines the organizational structure of the transnational organized crime groups found in the Federal Republic of Germany. My study of these structures focuses on the changes found in German, Turkish, Italian, Polish, and Dutch dominated groups by observing data provided by the Federal Police Office (Bundeskriminalamt) in their Annual Situation Reports (Bundeslagebild) from 2000 to 2013. Transnational organized crime is an ever growing phenomenon. In light of this, it is important to understand factors which shape criminal organizations into the forms seen today and apply that understanding to methods adopted by law enforcement in Europe and around the …

Highly Effective Instructional Choices Implemented In Schools, Stephen Jarrod Burns

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this quantitative study was to determine whether teacher-influenced instructional choices that have an effect size greater than 0.5 serve as predictors for increased student achievement on standardized test performance. As demonstrated in Visible Learning (Hattie, 2009) the five teacher-influenced instructional practices selected to be researched in this study have shown in numerous studies to produce significant increases in language arts and math student achievement scores. The findings of this study revealed that both questions were answered by conducting a simultaneous multiple regression using SPSS to determine if there is a significant relationship between growth model data collected …

Onefund: The Illusion Of One Disaster, Sarah R. Mcguire Jan 2015

Onefund: The Illusion Of One Disaster, Sarah R. Mcguire

Undergraduate Review

Every day in this country, hundreds of people are victims of violence, and many are seriously injured or killed. Disaster funds are often created to compensate victims or their families for the injuries, property destruction, and/or death caused by traumatic incidents—not only after natural disasters such as Hurricane Katrina, but also after some horrific, well publicized acts of violence perpetrated by people, such as the Boston Marathon bombing. Unfortunately, for most people injured or killed outside of such well known, specific circumstances, there is no easy or well funded avenue for compensation. There exist, then, two classes of victims, based …

Citations And Convictions: One Community’S Coordinated Response To Intimate Partner Violence & Efforts Toward Offender Accountability, Kerry Beldin, Allison Lauritsen, Henry J. Dsouza, Bob Moyer Jan 2015

Citations And Convictions: One Community’S Coordinated Response To Intimate Partner Violence & Efforts Toward Offender Accountability, Kerry Beldin, Allison Lauritsen, Henry J. Dsouza, Bob Moyer

United States Public Health Resources

In 1996, a coordinated community response (CCR) was formally established in a mid-sized Midwestern city to improve the criminal justice response to intimate partner violence (IPV). Data for this study included all IPV-related incidents to which the local police department responded since the establishment of the CCR for a fourteen year period. Effective CCRs provide for IPV offender accountability through citation and prosecution of IPV-related crimes. Concerns about demographic variables affecting citation and prosecution rates have been identified in the literature. Compared to national statistics, gender differences were consistent but higher citation and conviction rates were identified in this community. …

Returning Citizens: How Shifting Law And Policy In Maryland Will Help Citizens Who Return From Incarceration, Khyla D. Craine, Esq., Glenn E. Martin Jan 2015

Returning Citizens: How Shifting Law And Policy In Maryland Will Help Citizens Who Return From Incarceration, Khyla D. Craine, Esq., Glenn E. Martin

University of Baltimore Law Forum

In America, the concept of “time served” is a misnomer, as the shackles of a lifetime of collateral consequences make a criminal record a scathing obstacle for over 100 million Americans. Each year, more than 650,000 people are expected to reintegrate into our communities, often with substance abuse and mental health issues, minimal education, no job to sustain a life, and no stable home awaiting them.

While these numbers are staggering on their own, they do not reflect the even larger number of people who cycle through the court system and jails. For example, some take pleas for a lesser …

The Legitimacy Crisis And The Future Of Courts, Orna Rabinovich-Einy Jan 2015

The Legitimacy Crisis And The Future Of Courts, Orna Rabinovich-Einy

Cardozo Journal of Conflict Resolution

There is an overall legitimacy crisis in courts. The sources of this crisis have, to a large extent, been misconstrued. While there has been significant writing depicting the diminished quality, effectiveness, and fairness of courts, these phenomena have, for the most part, been viewed as distinct problems that warrant discrete solutions. This article shows that these problems are all manifestations of an overall legitimacy crisis that stems from the blurring of the originally stark distinctions between courts and alternatives. Traditionally, formal and informal dispute resolution processes had their own sources of legitimacy, each grounded in their respective distinctive (often opposing) …

Hart And Mack: New Restraints On Mr. Big And A New Approach To Unreliable Prosecution Evidence, Lisa Dufraimont Jan 2015

Hart And Mack: New Restraints On Mr. Big And A New Approach To Unreliable Prosecution Evidence, Lisa Dufraimont

The Supreme Court Law Review: Osgoode’s Annual Constitutional Cases Conference

Taken together, the Supreme Court of Canada’s recent judgments in R. v. Hart and R. v. Mack represent a coherent approach to confessions arising from Mr. Big operations. The Court has now recognized that these operations carry risks of generating evidence that is both unreliable and prejudicial, and of becoming abusive. Hart and Mack erect some safeguards for the accused in the Mr. Big context. The judgments should encourage police to exercise restraint in using the technique and courts to be more vigilant in assessing the resulting confessions. Even outside the Mr. Big context, the judgments may be relied on …

Confronting Legal And Technological Incongruity: Remote Testimony For Child Witnesses, Elizabeth A. Mulkey Jan 2015

Confronting Legal And Technological Incongruity: Remote Testimony For Child Witnesses, Elizabeth A. Mulkey

Vanderbilt Journal of Entertainment & Technology Law

Child victims are often the only eyewitnesses in cases against their abusers. A child's testimony may be necessary for a prosecutor to secure a conviction. However, the child must often face his or her abuser and relive the traumatic experience while giving this testimony. Any accommodations or protection of a child witness at trial must be balanced against the defendant's rights under the Confrontation Clause. The Supreme Court's decision in Maryland v. Craig allows child victims to testify via one-way, closed-circuit television in some circumstances, but the Court has not addressed two-way, closed-circuit testimony or remote testimony. In the absence …
