Judges' Perceptions Of Sex Offender Registration, Community Notification, And Residency Restrictions., Lauren Nicole Lennon
Judges' Perceptions Of Sex Offender Registration, Community Notification, And Residency Restrictions., Lauren Nicole Lennon
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
There is a meager amount of literature available on how criminal justice system actors perceive the range of sex offender registration and community notification (SORN) policies and their effectiveness, as well as sex offenders themselves. To date, only one study has been done on judges regarding their attitudes toward sexual offenders by Bumby and Maddox (1999). However, a study has not been completed in regard to judges’ perceptions of SORN and its efficacy in addition to their views on residency restrictions. The following study tries to expand the literature available and examines the perceptions of judges concerning SORN, residency restrictions, …
The Impact Of Victimization On The Disabled., Derek James Allen
The Impact Of Victimization On The Disabled., Derek James Allen
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
To date victimizations amongst the disabled has been researched, but the literature tends to group these victimizations amongst disabled as a whole. This research is also limited for this particular population and this review tries to outline, expand, and attempts to explain improvements for research by identifying the disabled into specific groups rather than all as one group. For example, individualizing policies and research for the blind specifically or any disability in an individualized approach. In the following an intensive online search of literature regarding different victimizations rates, types of disabilities and correlative victimizations, and the relationship these disabled individuals …

When Is Fear For One's Life Race-Gendered? An Intersectional Analysis Of The Bureau Of Immigration Appeals's In Re A-R-C-G- Decision, Ange-Marie Hancock
Fordham Law Review
In August 2014, the U.S. Board of Immigration Appeals (BIA) handed down a breakthrough decision, In re A-R-C-G-, permitting courts to consider domestic violence as a gendered form of persecution in a home country and thus grounds for asylum in the United States. Along with two other 2014 decisions, In re W-G-R- and In re M-E-V-G-, this case represented a marked shift from prior BIA decisions, which for fifteen years had interpreted sections 208(a) and 241(b)(3) of the Immigration and Naturalization Act more narrowly, thus excluding claims of home country abuse as reasonable grounds to grant asylum. Specifically, …
The Modern Day Scarlet Letter, Ifeoma Ajunwa
The Modern Day Scarlet Letter, Ifeoma Ajunwa
Fordham Law Review
American society has come to presuppose the efficacy of the collateral legal consequences of criminal conviction. But little attention has been paid to their effects on the reintegration efforts of the formerly incarcerated and, in particular, formerly incarcerated women. An 1848 case, Sutton v. McIlhany, affirmed collateral legal consequences as constituting an important part of criminal punishment. More recent cases, such as Turner v. Glickman, in which a class of people convicted of drug crimes were subsequently denied food stamps and other government benefits, have upheld the constitutionality of imposing these legal penalties on an individual even after …

Healthcare Utilization Analysis For Housing First Program In Anchorage Alaska, Gandy Becker
Healthcare Utilization Analysis For Housing First Program In Anchorage Alaska, Gandy Becker
Student Projects for Graduate Degrees
Homelessness, especially for the chronically homeless individual with substance abuse issues, often results in high use of emergency services, depression, loss of hope, increased victimization, poor medical care of chronic conditions, and intense suffering for the individual affected. Proponents of the Housing First model believe that housing is a human right, a need, and should be made available to all for basic human dignity. The primary purpose of this study was to answer the question of whether a Housing First model example in Alaska has impacted healthcare utilization for this specific population. Data on hospital visit numbers and hospital costs …
Mitya Karamazov Gives The Supreme Court An Onion: The Role Of Confessions, Amy D. Ronner
Mitya Karamazov Gives The Supreme Court An Onion: The Role Of Confessions, Amy D. Ronner
Mercer Law Review
Part II summarizes seminal United States Supreme Court confession cases. The Court has a longstanding hate-love relationship with confessions: while it believes that such evidence can valuably assist the truth-finding process, it has at times questioned its reliability and mistrusted coercive methods used for extraction. The Court's express goal under the Due Process Clause and Miranda v. Arizona is to ensure that confessions are the product of a free and rational choice. Although the Sixth Amendment and accompanying case law explicitly aim to protect the integrity of the adversarial process, freedom and rationality also (but more subtly) undergird the reasoning. …

The Public Defender Crisis In America: Gideon, The War On Drugs And The Fight For Equality, William Lawrence
The Public Defender Crisis In America: Gideon, The War On Drugs And The Fight For Equality, William Lawrence
University of Miami Race & Social Justice Law Review
The role of the public defender in the United States is one that is often disparaged and widely misunderstood. This note will first attempt to illuminate the evolution of the public defender movement in the United States, detailing its rather quiet ascent to the forefront of the criminal justice system: from the early work of Clara Foltz, to the trial of Clarence Earl Gideon, and beyond. The note will also broach just a few of the many systemic issues faced by the modern day public defender, including the unfortunate perception of inferiority from both the general public and indigent defendants …

Vicarious Trauma Among Interpreters, Miranda Lai, Georgina Heydon
Vicarious Trauma Among Interpreters, Miranda Lai, Georgina Heydon
International Journal of Interpreter Education
Public service interpreters in Australia work in a range of areas including welfare, health, education and criminal justice. Some of their assignments contain traumatic client material, which may be confrontational, upsetting or off-putting for an interpreter, potentially impacting on their perceived cognitive processes and emotions during and after the interpreting assignment. Through a large-scale online survey of 271 practicing interpreters in Victoria, Australia, the authors explore the extent of exposure to traumatic client material, interpreters’ ways of coping with such material, and how institutional care and self-care are administered, if they are at all. The findings of the survey are …

Legal Education Reform In Saudi Arabia: A Case Study Of Taibah University, Rayan Alkhalawi
Legal Education Reform In Saudi Arabia: A Case Study Of Taibah University, Rayan Alkhalawi
Maurer Theses and Dissertations
Legal education reform is a hot topic today. However, legal educators generally avoid discussing this important topic. Although legal education in Saudi Arabia is unique and complex, it is very hard to find academic literature about it. While this paper provides a brief explanation of legal education in Saudi Arabia, the main purpose of this paper is to discuss whether or not the current program at the College of Law prepares graduates for the best opportunities available in the legal market. And if not, how it could do a better job of making the program reach its full potential to …

Partnerships Through Adult Education: Re-Conceptualizing Family Literacy In The New Latino Diaspora, Jennifer Leigh Stacy
Partnerships Through Adult Education: Re-Conceptualizing Family Literacy In The New Latino Diaspora, Jennifer Leigh Stacy
Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Theses and Other Student Research
Schools are complex social institutions that mediate the experiences of newcomer families in the US. In recent years, a body of scholarship known as New Latino Diaspora has followed the migration of Latino families as they have moved away from traditional gateway communities and settled into territories that have previously been home to few, if any, Latino families. As a result, both institutionalized and grassroots educational initiatives have emerged as vehicles to support newcomer families as they learn English and adapt to living in a new community. This dissertation looks at the cultural space of a family literacy program that …

It also offers a possible intervention that could be implemented in New York City. The intervention involves an event in which the women are interviewed for feedback and information is provided. Discussion is included regarding why this topic should matter to the general population, academic researchers, and social workers.
Intermittent White-Collar Offenders: Who They Are And How To Stop Them, Mark Edward Correia
Intermittent White-Collar Offenders: Who They Are And How To Stop Them, Mark Edward Correia
Criminal Justice
This paper examines intermittent white-collar offenders. Intermittent offenders represent the most dangerous of white-collar offenders as they are criminally dormant for years at a time and commit deviant acts when the opportunity presents itself. It is for this reason that they are classified as “opportunity seekers.” This paper will discuss previous white-collar crime research and assert that white-collar offenders are predisposed to crime. In addition, a modern definition for white-collar crime will be introduced. Following the analysis of the intermittent white-collar offender characteristics, real-world applications on how to dissuade offenders from participating in white-collar crime will be discussed. The onus …
Prison-Based Animal Programs: A Descriptive Analysis, Alicia M. Loe
Prison-Based Animal Programs: A Descriptive Analysis, Alicia M. Loe
Master's Theses
There are many types of programs used in prisons. One such type is known as prison-based animal programs (PAPs). Prison-based animal programs bring animals into facilities in order to help offenders with emotional and behavioral problems. However promising these programs are, there is little empirical research. If these programs are to be continued, more research is needed. There has only been one national study looking at PAPs (Furst 2006). This current study will help fill the gap on PAP research. A national study was conducted using 302 randomly selected correctional facilities. Characteristics of PAPs were gathered through the use of …
