Exploring Cyber Harassment Among Women Who Use Social Media, Sloane Burke Winkelman, Jody Oomen-Early, Ashley D. Walker, Lawrence Chu, Alice Yick-Flanagan
Community Health: Faculty Publications
The number of Internet users around the word is at an all-time high. The majority of North Americans are internet users and over two-thirds participate in some kind of social network (i.e. Facebook, Twitter, etc.). Social networks and mobile technology enable individuals to connect instantaneously or asynchronously, across geographic boundaries publicly or anonymously. Few studies exploring cyber harassment have been conducted, primarily because these technologies are relatively recent. The purpose of this descriptive study was to examine U.S. women's experiences with and attitudes toward cyber harassment by way of an anonymous electronic survey. A total of 293 adult women (mean …
A General Model Of The Relationship Between The Apportionment Of Human Genetic Diversity And The Apportionment Of Human Phenotypic Diversity, Michael D. Edge, Noah A. Rosenberg
A General Model Of The Relationship Between The Apportionment Of Human Genetic Diversity And The Apportionment Of Human Phenotypic Diversity, Michael D. Edge, Noah A. Rosenberg
Human Biology Open Access Pre-Prints
Models that examine genetic differences between populations alongside a genotype–phenotype map can provide insight about phenotypic variation among groups. We generalize a simple model of a completely heritable, additive, selectively neutral quantitative trait to examine the relationship between single-locus genetic differentiation and phenotypic differentiation on quantitative traits. In agreement with similar efforts using different models, we show that the expected degree to which two groups differ on a neutral quantitative trait is not strongly affected by the number of genetic loci that influence the trait: neutral trait differences are expected to have a magnitude comparable to the genetic differences at …

In 2012, the Washington State Department of Corrections (WADOC) embarked on an ambitious effort to restructure their community supervision model. These changes were driven by the passage of Senate Bill 6204, which created substantial operating changes to the Community Corrections Division (CCD) of the WADOC, including matching the level of supervision to offender’s risk level, utilizing evidence-based treatment and implementing swift and certain (yet moderate) jail sanctions for community supervision violations (Washington State Department of Corrections 2008; 2014). The Swift and Certain (SAC) policy was implemented in May of 2012, with the intent of expanding the HOPE model to a …

Legal And Psychological Considerations In Adolescents' End-Of-Life Choices, Molly J. Walker Wilson
Legal And Psychological Considerations In Adolescents' End-Of-Life Choices, Molly J. Walker Wilson
NULR Online
In this essay, Professor Wilson reflects on the manner in which the law treats adolescents who are faced with end-of-life decisions. She begins by surveying the legal framework underlying end-of-life choices at the state and federal levels. She then discusses two decisionmakers - adolescents and adults - and the behavioral traits and biases that animate each when end-of-life decisions arise. In doing so, Wilson draws upon a rich body of empirical work on human decisionmaking. Wilson concludes that placing end-of-life decisions solely in the hands of adolescents or adults can result in suboptimal choices. She proposes the use of a …
Situational Crime Prevention And Worldwide Piracy: A Cross‑Continent Analysis, Jon M. Shane, Eric Piza, Marissa Mandala
Situational Crime Prevention And Worldwide Piracy: A Cross‑Continent Analysis, Jon M. Shane, Eric Piza, Marissa Mandala
Publications and Research
Relying on situational crime prevention perspective, this study compares successful and unsuccessful pirate attacks reported to the International Maritime Bureau (IMB) from the year 2000 through 2013 (n = 4,902). The study builds upon the recent work of Shane and Magnuson in Justice Quarterly, pp 1–26 (2014), which found various SCP techniques effectively prevented piracy attacks on a global level. The current study builds upon these findings by testing whether the global effect of SCP is consistent across individual continents. A series of mixed-effects logistic regression models and follow-up likelihood ratio tests were incorporated to explore the research question. In …

Abstract
The Rule of Law and Ethical Integrity: Does Haiti Need a Code of Legal Ethics?
When concerns about impunity and devastating poverty are facts of life, as they are in Haiti, lawyers face enormous obstacles in their efforts to uphold the rule of law and protect human rights. At the heart of many of these obstacles lie ethical challenges. For example, bribery of judicial officials is a crime and undermines the rule of law. But, what if a lawyer understands that pre-trial detention in the local prison generally involves grievous violations of inmates’ basic human rights, and bribery represents …

The Beginning Of The End Of Internet Freedom, Dawn C. Nunziato
The Beginning Of The End Of Internet Freedom, Dawn C. Nunziato
Georgetown Journal of International Law
It was long assumed that the Internet would bring about greater opportunities for free expression than any other medium. In recent years, however, the Internet has increasingly become a tool of censorship, as scores of countries around the world have imposed nationwide filtering regimes to block their citizens’ access to various types of Internet speech that they deem harmful. Instead of trending toward greater freedom, the Internet is now trending toward greater censorship and control, as many countries – including democracies such as the United Kingdom -- are seeking to exercise greater and greater control over this medium. Today, more …
Helping Students Understand Media: Examining The Efficacy Of Interdisciplinary Media Training At The University Level, Hans C. Schmidt
Helping Students Understand Media: Examining The Efficacy Of Interdisciplinary Media Training At The University Level, Hans C. Schmidt
Journal of Media Literacy Education
Crowded curriculums and restrictive program requirements often mean that comprehensive media literacy education is impractical at the university level, and that media literacy competencies can be addressed only in the form of narrowly focused lessons integrated into existing classes. This study considers the extent to which such limited lessons can lead to the development of broader, well-rounded media literacy competencies. Data gathered from a quasi-experiment involving 118 participants suggests that narrowly focused media lessons can be used to encourage the development of broader media literacy competencies, but that focused instruction remains necessary as well.
Gender And Capital Punishment: The Case Of Gaile Owens, Jenna Brashear
Gender And Capital Punishment: The Case Of Gaile Owens, Jenna Brashear
Kaleidoscope
The United States’ use of capital punishment is a practice oft-debated in many disciplines, but the gender imbalance of the death penalty in favor of women makes feminists one group hesitant to discuss the practice. Although females account for one in ten murder arrests, they are only one percent of the criminals actually executed. This paper examines the implications of capital punishment for women, and attempts to explain why women are executed at a disproportionately low rate. Trends that emerge include institutional structures, such as aggravating or mitigating factors, which are constructed in a manner that dictates the severest punishments …

A Descriptive Analysis Of A Problem-Based Learning Police Academy, David A. Makin
A Descriptive Analysis Of A Problem-Based Learning Police Academy, David A. Makin
Interdisciplinary Journal of Problem-Based Learning
In the 1970s, Egon Bitner offered a critique of police academy training, signified by the ability to train compliant soldierbureaucrats rather than competent practitioners. Over the years, subsequent training models have been implemented, evaluated, and modified in an attempt to exceed what has been deemed adequate training. This research provides the first of several outcome evaluations as part of a longitudinal study on the efficacy of problem-based learning in a Basic Law Enforcement Academy (BLEA). Data for this research include survey results for the period of 2009–2012. Early results suggest the problematic nature of the dualistic dilemma within police academy …
The Avengers Disassembled: Deconstructing Gender & Hegemonic Masculinity In Superhero Culture, Matthew James Fleming
The Avengers Disassembled: Deconstructing Gender & Hegemonic Masculinity In Superhero Culture, Matthew James Fleming
Social Justice and Community Engagement
This study explores the construction of gender and manifestation of hegemonic masculinity in comic and superhero culture. It is an investigation into the marginalization and discrimination of “lesser” masculinities that do not conform to the ideals of hegemony as theorized by R.W. Connell. Employing a third-‐wave feminist and masculinity theorist approach to gender and sexuality theory, this study considers the massive expansion of comic culture from the early 1940s through the early twenty-‐first century, and the many ways in which gender and sexuality have been constructed in these narratives. The research illustrates the gross injustice of an idealized version of …
