Forensic Search Methods: Comparing Effectiveness And Efficiency In A Grassland Environment, Robert Brown May 2025

Forensic Search Methods: Comparing Effectiveness And Efficiency In A Grassland Environment, Robert Brown

Honors Theses

An important aspect of death investigations is the recovery of human remains to determine crucial details such as body identity, time of death, and cause of death. Physical evidence is often moved by elements, such as water, gravity, plants, and scavengers in outdoor crime scenes, making recovery challenging. As a result, forensic scientists have created several search methods to locate dispersed human remains. Previous studies have primarily focused on predicting animal scavenging patterns, but few have compared the performance of forensic search methods in specific environments. This study addresses this area of research by assessing three common search methods in …

The current study tests whether perceptions of general strain and online disinhibition effect could explain the intent to commit Revenge Pornography (RP). The data was collected using an online survey that was launched on a research platform called "Connect Cloud Research." After gathering the data, bivariate correlation and multiple regression analysis were necessary to establish the relationship and causality. Results were mixed, showing that there is a positive correlation with general strain and online disinhibition effect factors with the intent to commit RP, while multiple regression indicated that the independent variables did not predict the intent to commit RP. Unexpectedly, …

A Brighter Future Lies Ahead? The Impact Of Juvenile Records On Adults' Hiring Prospects, Morgan Rose Wagner May 2025

A Brighter Future Lies Ahead? The Impact Of Juvenile Records On Adults' Hiring Prospects, Morgan Rose Wagner

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Having a record can make obtaining employment difficult - while the stigma against criminal records is well established, the effects of a juvenile record on hiring outcomes is less clear. Juvenile records can often be sealed; however, when sealing is not done consistently or transparently, people with juvenile records face a difficult decision when applying for jobs - disclose a record that may be sealed, or omit information about a record that shows up on a background check? Experiment 1 used a hypothetical applicant paradigm with a sample of hiring managers to evaluate the impact of juvenile record disclosure and …

Can Shame And Guilt Be Used As A Deterrent For Drug Use And Drug Crime Recidivism?, Megan Elizabeth Pesek May 2025

Can Shame And Guilt Be Used As A Deterrent For Drug Use And Drug Crime Recidivism?, Megan Elizabeth Pesek

Sociology and Criminology Undergraduate Honors Theses

Introduction: The present study focuses on how shame and guilt can be used as a deterrent for substance use and substance-related crime recidivism. This research is significant because of on-going alcohol and other drug crime recidivism in the United States. About 68% of drug-involved offenders have been found to recidivate within three years of their release from prison. Understanding how guilt and shame affect one's drug use and crime recidivism is important in recovery. This study was influenced by Braithwaite's theory of reintegrative shaming: using shame and guilt as the specific deterrent for recidivism. Methods: Based on this theory, I …

Gender Craze: Framing Policy Discrimination Against Transgender Students In K-12 Education, Quinette Rogers

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Transgender youth in K-12 public education have been systematically marginalized through state-sanctioned violence and discriminatory policies, often portrayed as societal "boogeymen." They face exclusion and othering due to restrictive state legislation, such as bathroom bans, sports participation restrictions, and limited access to gender-affirming care. Current research lacks a comprehensive analysis of how state-level legislation affects transgender students. This study addresses that gap by employing qualitative thematic coding to examine the language, framing, and impact of state education policies on transgender students. By analyzing how these policies are framed around themes such as protecting family, safeguarding children, individual liberty, constitutional rights, …

Using Machine Learning To Detect Vault (Anti-Forensic) Apps, Michael N. Johnstone, Wencheng Yang, Mohiuddin Ahmed May 2025

Using Machine Learning To Detect Vault (Anti-Forensic) Apps, Michael N. Johnstone, Wencheng Yang, Mohiuddin Ahmed

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Content hiding, or vault applications (apps), are designed with a secondary, often concealed purpose, such as encrypting and storing files. While these apps may serve legitimate functions, they unequivocally present significant challenges for law enforcement. Conventional methods for tackling this issue, whether static or dynamic, prove inadequate when devices—typically smartphones—cannot be modified. Additionally, these methods frequently require prior knowledge of which apps are classified as vault apps. This research decisively demonstrates that a non-invasive method of app analysis, combined with machine learning, can effectively identify vault apps. Our findings reveal that it is entirely possible to detect an Android vault …

Antiracist Expert Evidence, Jasmine Gonzales Rose, Asees Bhasin, Spencer Piston May 2025

Antiracist Expert Evidence, Jasmine Gonzales Rose, Asees Bhasin, Spencer Piston

Faculty Scholarship

Since 2020, when mass protests against racism swept across the United States, scholars, lawyers, and the general public have become increasingly aware that racism permeates society and the criminal legal system, from overt racial animus to the nuanced effects of structural racism. Demonstrating the influence of racism is therefore vital to the practice of criminal defense, yet many attorneys do not know how to prove racism in court. We surveyed over seven hundred criminal-defense attorneys across the United States, and nearly half had never heard of expert witnesses testifying or submitting written reports on racism—what we call “antiracist expert evidence.” …

Enhancing Influence Estimation In Gradient Boosted Decision Trees Through Hierarchical Analysis, Anurag Choubey May 2025

Enhancing Influence Estimation In Gradient Boosted Decision Trees Through Hierarchical Analysis, Anurag Choubey

Theses

This report presents a novel influence function for gradient-boosted decision trees (GBDTs), a widely-used class of predictive models. Influence estimation aims to quantify how individual training samples affect a model’s predictions, offering valuable insights for model debugging, data quality analysis, and in- terpretability. Existing influence functions for GBDTs—such as LeafInfluence, LeafInfluenceSP, and BoostIn—have shown varying degrees of success, with BoostIn currently recognized as the state-of-the-art in terms of estimation quality and computational efficiency. In this work, we propose BoostInLCA, a new influence function that extends BoostIn by incorporating information from non-leaf nodes via the Lowest Common Ancestor (LCA) path, thereby …

Predicting The Probability Of Crime Related Danger In Los Angeles, Joshua Oghenetega Okpako May 2025

Predicting The Probability Of Crime Related Danger In Los Angeles, Joshua Oghenetega Okpako

Theses

This thesis examines the use of advanced machine learning to predict crime danger in Los Angeles, where 2023 violent crime rates (503 per 100,000) surpass the national average (363.8 per 100,000). Rooted in theories like social disorganization and victim vulnerability, it addresses the lack of combined victim-centric modeling by focusing on three questions: (1) Do blended ensemble models outperform individual models in predicting crime danger? (2) Can unsupervised learning techniques enhance supervised models’ accuracy through label generation or augmentation? (3) How can we interpret accurate machine learning models' decision-making processes? Using historical crime data from Los Angeles (2020–2025) and various …

Innovating Criminal Justice: Predictive Analytics For Effective Recidivism Management, Dina Ali Haidar May 2025

Innovating Criminal Justice: Predictive Analytics For Effective Recidivism Management, Dina Ali Haidar

Theses

Recidivism—the tendency of previously convicted individuals to reoffend—poses significant challenges to criminal justice systems worldwide. In the United States, a study by the Bureau of Justice Statistics revealed that approximately 68% of released prisoners were rearrested within three years, and 83% within nine years (Bureau of Justice Statistics, 2018). These high rates underscore systemic deficiencies in rehabilitation processes and resource allocation. Traditional risk assessment tools often rely on static factors, failing to account for the dynamic and individualized nature of reoffending risks. This limitation highlights the need for innovative, data-driven methodologies to enhance offender management strategies. This study proposes a …
