For I Was Hungry And You Gave Me Something To Eat: Utilizing Rluipa To Prevent Force-Feeding Religiously Based Hunger-Striking Inmates Notes, Megan Wade
Connecticut Law Review
Religiously based hunger-striking prisoners face a cruel reality—being force-fed for adhering to their religious beliefs. Typically, hunger-striking prisoners facing being force-fed challenge this state action as a First Amendment violation. So far, no inmate has been successful. Congress enacted the Religious Land Use and Institutionalized Persons Act (RLUIPA) in direct response to state infringement upon prisoners’ right to religious freedom. Because RLUIPA offers greater protection of religious rights than does the First Amendment, religiously based hunger-striking prisoners will have a greater likelihood of preventing a state from forcefeeding them by alleging a RLUIPA violation.

On many accounts, it is a tale of two cities. The headlines and marketing machines tout to the world that “The Big Easy is Back.” But beyond the celebrations and parades, the story for poor Katrina survivors is very different. While many residents and businesses are enjoying a resurgence a decade after Katrina stormed through, others in post-Katrina New Orleans have a different experience. More than ten years after Hurricane Katrina, the city still struggles with systemic failures. These problem areas include housing, health care, mental health treatment, employment, education, and the criminal justice system. All of these challenges are …

The overarching theme of this paper is that the racialization of mass incarceration in America, which has been taking place since the latter part of the last century, and continues to this very day, is characterized by what I term, the “Jim Crow effect".

Archives Of Violence: Seeking And Preserving Records On Mass Sectarian Attacks In India, Surabhi Chopra
Archives Of Violence: Seeking And Preserving Records On Mass Sectarian Attacks In India, Surabhi Chopra
National Law School of India Review
ndependent India has seen multiple instances of systematic mass violence, targeted at minorities, and tolerated, if not facilitated, by the state. However, the preservation and publicisation of official records on these instances has been inadequate. This is despite such information being vital to preventing as well as responding to future episodes of mass violence. This paper examines the difficulties in obtaining official records on mass violence through the Right to Information (RTI) Act. It specifically looks at records concerning four instances between 1983 and 2002, in Nellie, Delhi, Bhagalpur, and Gujarat. The author concludes by proposing a framework to make …

Application Of Routine Activities Theory To The Study Of Residential Armed Robbery In Ghana, Neeh Nhai Lhayea
Application Of Routine Activities Theory To The Study Of Residential Armed Robbery In Ghana, Neeh Nhai Lhayea
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study utilized Routine Activities theory to explain deterrent and motivating factors associated with residential armed robbery in Ghana. Although several studies have examined crime through the lenses of Routine Activities theory, none such studies have been dedicated to the study of residential armed robbery in Ghana. This study, therefore, attempts to fill that void by applying Routine Activities theory to the study of residential armed robbery. This research samples 56 of armed robbers in three selected prisons of contemporary Ghana to provide a fuller criminological and descriptive analysis of the offence, the offenders, motivation and guardianship to committing residential …

Comorbid Substance Use Diagnoses And Partner Violence Among Offenders Receiving Pharmacotherapy For Opioid Dependence, Cory A. Crane, Robert C. Schlauch, Susan Devine, Caroline J. Easton
Psychology Faculty Publications
While previous studies find mixed evidence of an association between opioid use and intimate partner violence perpetration among community samples, initial evidence has detected increased rates of partner violence among individuals receiving pharmacological intervention for opioid dependence. The current study evaluated the role of current comorbid substance use diagnoses, a robust risk factor for violent behavior, on the likelihood of perpetrating partner violence among a high risk sample of offenders receiving pharmacological intervention for opioid dependence. The authors analyzed self-report data provided by 81 (55 male) opioid dependent offenders during a court-ordered substance use interview. Approximately one-third of the sample …
