The Impact Of Mental Health Courts On Public Attitudes Held Toward Justice-Involved Individuals With Mental Illness, Maeve Porter
The Impact Of Mental Health Courts On Public Attitudes Held Toward Justice-Involved Individuals With Mental Illness, Maeve Porter
Student Theses
Prior research has established that mental health court programs play an important role in reducing recidivism and mental health symptoms of defendants. However, there is a lack of understanding of the stigma that justice-involved individuals may encounter upon release from mental health court into the community, and the extent to which the general public is aware of mental health court programs. The present study sought to address public perceptions regarding mental health courts, their efficacy, and their participants based on the awareness and availability of these specialized courts in two similar states (New York and New Jersey), one in which …
The Transformational Learning By Web-Conferencing Circuit Board: A Conceptual Model Outlining The Conditions That Facilitate Transformation In Synchronous Spaces, Rachel L. Reilly
The Transformational Learning By Web-Conferencing Circuit Board: A Conceptual Model Outlining The Conditions That Facilitate Transformation In Synchronous Spaces, Rachel L. Reilly
Communication
As synchronous technologies and high-speed internet have become more accessible, opportunities for learning in web-conferencing settings have also increased. Despite the ubiquity of learning experiences taking place over web-conferencing, there is a lack of research on what makes for effective adult learning in synchronous settings from learners’ perspectives. Moreover, there are few studies examining how transformational learning—learning that changes an adult’s mindset, beliefs, or perceptions—occurs in web-conferencing settings. This qualitative study explores the conditions through which transformational learning occurs in web-conferencing settings. It includes the perspectives of adult learners (all at least eighteen years old) who have participated in a …

The Impact Of Incarceration On Men’S Mental Health, Shannon Williams, Shannon Williams
The Impact Of Incarceration On Men’S Mental Health, Shannon Williams, Shannon Williams
Master of Arts in Human Services
This capstone research paper examines the mental health crisis among incarcerated men in the United States, a population disproportionately affected by mental illness, racial inequality, and systemic neglect. Incarcerated males often enter correctional facilities with pre-existing mental health conditions such as major depressive disorder, bipolar disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, and substance use disorders. Rather than receiving adequate treatment, these individuals are frequently exposed to environments that worsen their conditions. Practices such as solitary confinement, loss of privileges, and isolation from support systems contribute to emotional instability, trauma, and, in some cases, suicidal ideation. This paper explores how detention …
Interpretation And Control Of Ai Model Behavior Through Direct Adjustment Of Latent Representations, Austin Davis
Interpretation And Control Of Ai Model Behavior Through Direct Adjustment Of Latent Representations, Austin Davis
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024
This dissertation investigates the structures and mechanisms underpinning the latent space representations that emerge within Generative Pretrained Transformer (GPT) models. Addressing the broader goal of enhancing AI trustworthiness through transparency, accountability, and controllability, we focus on techniques to understand, quantify, and manipulate these latent space representations. Through a series of analyses, we examine several chess-playing GPT models as controlled testbeds, leveraging their structured decision space to explore emergent representations and decision-making processes.
Key contributions include a mechanistic analysis of the attention heads and latent representations, the development of novel metrics for evaluating intervention outcomes, and the application of linear probe …
“Rights Not Rescue”: How Stigma Influences Harmful Legislation Toward Sex Workers In The Deep South, Abigail Mckenzie Conover
“Rights Not Rescue”: How Stigma Influences Harmful Legislation Toward Sex Workers In The Deep South, Abigail Mckenzie Conover
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024
In the United States, while prostitution or sex work is not explicitly illegal at a federal level, certain characteristics have been criminalized, mainly in indirect ways. This is significant when considering the different ways that sex work is regarded (both positively and negatively) at an institutional level. The current study examines the potential correlation between structural/institutional stigma regarding sex work/sex workers and legislation meant to directly or indirectly harm sex workers. The overall goal of this research was to answer the following question: How does structural/institutional stigma against sex workers present itself in legislation? To accomplish this, I conducted a …

The Association Between The Social Determinants Of Health And Shared Decision Making: An Investigation Of The National Survey Of Children's Health, Vernon T. Headley
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024
Objective: Shared decision-making (SDM) is defined as a clinical approach that allows both physicians and patients to communicate on the best treatment options that will improve the patient's overall health outcomes. Shared decision-making plays a vital role in how parents engage with their physicians regarding the healthcare needs of their children. This dissertation assessed the association between the social determinants of health and shared decision-making regarding children’s health-related issues.
Methods: The data for the current research were the National Survey of Children’s Health (NSCH), combined 2017-2020. The dependent variable was shared decision-making and included discussing treatment options, raising concerns regarding …

Nueva Metodología De Análisis Para Determinar El Delito Ambiental De Ecocidio Por Glifosato En Cultivos Permanentes De Coca En Colombia, Rosalina González Forero, Jerry H. Kavouras, Érika González Ruiz
Biology Department Faculty Articles
School Absenteeism In Children With Disabilities: An Analysis Of School Climate And Academic Mindset, Karolyne Bastos Stucki
School Absenteeism In Children With Disabilities: An Analysis Of School Climate And Academic Mindset, Karolyne Bastos Stucki
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Students with disabilities (SWDs) are more likely to be chronically absent than general education peers (Anderson, 2021; Gee, 2018, U.S. Department of Education, 2016). Etiology for SWDs is complex with influencing factors spanning multiple ecological levels, but bolstering protective factors for SWDs may address attendance disparities. Multi-tiered systems of support (MTSS) models have the potential to address absenteeism in SWDs via school-wide preventative and/or intervention efforts (Tier 1 & 2) aimed at increasing or decreasing influencing factors in students with disabilities. School climate and academic mindset may influence students with disabilities’ attendance. The purpose of the present study was to …
Understanding The Role Of Drug Offenses And The Death Penalty In Iran, Cyrus Zarganj
Understanding The Role Of Drug Offenses And The Death Penalty In Iran, Cyrus Zarganj
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Since the 1979 revolution, the Islamic Republic of Iran has been governed by Islamic laws devised by Shia Muslim clerics, significantly influencing the nation's legal framework in both criminal and civil contexts. The death penalty in Iran covers a broad spectrum of offenses, many of which would not be considered capital crimes or even crimes globally. This extensive application of the death penalty is an instrument of social control during periods of political tension, indicating a direct relationship between the regime's stability and the enforcement of extreme punitive measures. Despite some reduction in the visibility of executions due to international …

The Impact Of Alternatives To Incarceration And The Motherhood Identity On Mothers And Their Children: A Qualitative Study, Chloe Blau
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
The U.S. prison system population increasingly includes women, a significant proportion of whom are mothers, often incarcerated for non-violent crimes. Some research suggests that alternative to incarceration (ATI) programs can help these women to continue supporting their children while serving their sentences and receiving services that may decrease recidivism. However, few studies have explored the lived experiences of women in these programs. This dissertation investigates the impact of participating in ATI programs on mothers and their relationship to their motherhood identity, their ability to mother, and their relationship with their children. Using a qualitative approach to better understand how women …
Exploring Identity And Seeking Belonging: Diverse Students’ Experiences With A Campus Women’S Center, Sarah Tucker Jenkins
Exploring Identity And Seeking Belonging: Diverse Students’ Experiences With A Campus Women’S Center, Sarah Tucker Jenkins
Journal for Women and Gender Centers in Higher Education
Women’s and gender equity centers (abbreviated as women’s centers) were first established in U.S. universities in the 1960s and currently number in the multiple hundreds across all types of higher education institutions in the country. Women’s centers play a vital role in providing high impact, culturally responsive student engagement; however, research on women’s centers is often informal and infrequent, leading to a dearth of knowledge about the efficacy of student engagement efforts. Women’s centers, and the feminist movement from which they arose, have historically excluded the voices and experiences of women of color and other marginalized identities. While centers are …

Faculty Publications
Background
Chagas disease is a chronic, insidious parasitic infection (Trypanosoma cruzi) that slowly develops to irreversible organomegaly over several decades. The disease is traditionally acquired in endemic Latin American countries during childhood; < 1% of foreign-born adult residents in the United States have been diagnosed or treated with this potentially fatal disease. Low physician knowledge is a primary factor leading to misdiagnosis.
Methods
Starting in April 2022, a 4-part T cruzi clinical education intervention began, which included (i) 2 grand rounds presentations to >100 internal medicine providers; (ii) implementation of a “clinical Chagas champions program” incorporating 14 key clinical staff at varying departments and administrative levels educated on their specific role related to T cruzi screening, diagnosis confirmation, clinical management, and medical billing; ( …
Effects Of Rapid Shearing Depending On Environmental Factors: Acrylic, Modacrylic, And Polypropylene Fibers, Charles K. Jin
Effects Of Rapid Shearing Depending On Environmental Factors: Acrylic, Modacrylic, And Polypropylene Fibers, Charles K. Jin
Student Theses
Textiles can often be found damaged in forensic casework, and analysis of these defects can yield valuable information. Different methods of fiber fracture leave behind varying alterations in structure on individual fiber ends, leading to their possible identification and connection to a case. Interactions between high-speed impacts and synthetic fabrics composed of thermoplastic fibers are classified as rapid shear or high-speed tensile breaks. In these situations, unique fiber end characteristics can form due to excessive heat generation that is unable to dissipate quickly enough to prevent fiber end morphology from changing.
This study aimed to explore how different external conditions …
Disentangling The Effect Of Criminal Legal System Involvement On Mental Health In The United States, Pui Ying Chan
Disentangling The Effect Of Criminal Legal System Involvement On Mental Health In The United States, Pui Ying Chan
Dissertations and Theses
BACKGROUND: Interactions with the criminal legal system (CLS), such as through arrest or incarceration, are relatively common in the United States (US) and are increasingly recognized as social risk factors for poor mental health. Previous studies have reported a positive association between CLS involvement and poor mental health, with some theoretical frameworks, including the ecosocial theory and the stress process paradigm, supporting a plausible causal relationship. However, prior research has significant limitations in providing casual evidence given possible reverse causation in cross-sectional studies and insufficient consideration for the dynamics between CLS exposures, mental health status, and related confounders over time …

Self-Distraction As A Positive Coping Mechanism For Adolescents Of Incarcerated Parents, Tysha Deve' Ushry
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Children of incarcerated parents have been an increasing area of scholarly focus, especially considering that the United States holds one of the highest rates of incarceration in the world. The purpose of this qualitative basic study was to explore the perceptions of adolescents, ages 18-21, whose parents are incarcerated in prison, and their use of self-distraction from parental incarceration as a positive coping mechanism. The study was grounded in Hill’s family stress theory. Purposive and snowball sample strategies were employed in this study to obtain participants from a private Facebook group. Data were collected through semistructured interviews with 12 participants …
