Interdisciplinary Co-Teaching And Community-Engaged Learning: Integrating Community Case Studies To Teach Ethics, Justice, And Grassroots Leadership, Ziwei Qi, Lori E. Kniffin, Sammuel Byer (Rob)
Leadership Faculty Publications
This paper serves as a teaching report examining an interdisciplinary, co-taught course at a rural, regional state university designed to promote ethics, justice, and grassroots leadership through community-engaged learning (CEL). Faculty from criminal justice, philosophy, and leadership studies co-developed and taught the course using Socratic dialogue and reflective journaling to help students analyze community challenges from multiple disciplinary angles. Students also engaged in training on positionality, power dynamics, and cultural humility, incorporating their reflections into final reports to deepen ethical engagement. Regular faculty collaboration aligned teaching strategies across disciplines, while a case study presentation and analysis allowed community partners to …
Relationship Between Peer Support Services And Offender Reentry Organizations, Julie Megan Dixon
Relationship Between Peer Support Services And Offender Reentry Organizations, Julie Megan Dixon
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
This study addressed the gap in understanding the acceptability, appropriateness, and feasibility of peer support services (PSS) among two groups of reentry staff in North Carolina (NC): those in the community and those within the Department of Adult Correction (DAC). Both groups of reentry staff completed a web-based survey encompassing the Acceptability of Intervention Measure (AIM), Intervention Appropriateness Measure (IAM), and Feasibility of Intervention Measure (FIM). The sampling strategy, response rate, and survey administration details are provided. Guided by ecological systems theory, this study examined how PSS can improve reentry outcomes and address insufficient public safety, social relationship deterioration, and …

‘Immigrant Invaders,’ ‘Arab Terrorists,’ And ‘Leftist Subversives’:Surveillance State From Palestine To Mexico, Alexis Figueroa
‘Immigrant Invaders,’ ‘Arab Terrorists,’ And ‘Leftist Subversives’:Surveillance State From Palestine To Mexico, Alexis Figueroa
Silicon Valley Sociological Review
Immigrants in the US exist under a very strict regime of surveillance. This regime is characterized by authentication systems, check-in points, registration, forms of mobility tracking, interoperable databases, and, at the militarized US-Mexico border, the scrutiny of facial-recognition technology, automatic watchtowers, and drones. However, this didn’t come about spontaneously. This paper attempts to outline the development of the immigration surveillance state as a generations-long bipartisan project. From the evolution of the military-industrial complex and technologies like the internet innovated to spy on national independence movements, to the proliferation of data collection made for global finance, the immigration surveillance state reveals …
Legislation, Racialization, And The Societal Issuessoutheast Asian Americans Face, Sydney Nguyen
Legislation, Racialization, And The Societal Issuessoutheast Asian Americans Face, Sydney Nguyen
Silicon Valley Sociological Review
This research proposal investigates the intersection of racialization and law in the Southeast Asian diaspora in the US at a time of rising anti-Asian hate crimes and marginalizing legislation. I propose a mixed-methods approach—integrating qualitative methods such as interviews and focus groups with quantitative surveys—to determine how racial formations and state policies contribute to the social and economic stratification of these groups. To contextualize these questions, I discuss how Asian Americans are underrepresented and miscategorized in criminal justice statistics, resulting in their ongoing marginalization and the masking of specific issues they face. This work aims to make a contribution to …

It Takes A Village: Addressing Community Needs To Implement Firearm Prohibitions For Domestic Violence Protective Order Respondents, Kellie R Lynch, Michael K Gusmano, Jeff R Temple, Sarah Lane
It Takes A Village: Addressing Community Needs To Implement Firearm Prohibitions For Domestic Violence Protective Order Respondents, Kellie R Lynch, Michael K Gusmano, Jeff R Temple, Sarah Lane
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
Prohibiting domestic violence protective order (DVPO) respondents from firearms is an effective strategy to prevent intimate partner homicide. However, DVPO gun laws vary considerably across states, and the implementation of such laws is inconsistent across localities. Local context, such as resource availability, priorities, and politics, differs across types of communities and impacts the implementation of laws. We conducted in-depth key informant interviews with victim service and criminal justice professionals (N = 27) working in urban communities, rural communities, and statewide organizations to better understand: (a) what communities need to effectively prohibit DVPO respondents from firearms (i.e., the DVPO gun …

Machine Learning And Crime Prevention, Emily Lizewski
Machine Learning And Crime Prevention, Emily Lizewski
Student Theses
Predictive policing uses machine learning to analyze crime patterns and help law enforcement better efficient use their resources. These tools can improve accuracy by highlighting complex trends in large sets of data. While this technology has its advantages, it also raises important ethical and social questions. Within this paper we looks at how predictive policing works, focusing on the machine learning models often used such as decision trees, random forests, gradient boosting, and models that factor in both time and location. It also explores how these tools might unintentionally reinforce biases already present in historical crime data. In reviewing the …
Criminal Adult Perceptions Of Transition Services Following Histories Of Physical Abuse As Children, Kimberlyn Sherie Crook
Criminal Adult Perceptions Of Transition Services Following Histories Of Physical Abuse As Children, Kimberlyn Sherie Crook
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
It is possible that childhood abuse and neglect could be linked to adult crime and delinquency. Intervention services' apparent ineffectiveness worries social workers, law enforcement, and policymakers. The literature found that abused children are more likely to commit crimes as adults without intervention and prevention, which harms society and abused children. Research suggests child abuse and adult crime may have early roots. The purpose of this qualitative study was to address adult victims firsthand accounts to identify intervention service gaps and suggest improvements. The qualitative design was used to address adult criminals who were abused as children and their unique …
Reforming The Indian Bar: The Limits Of Technological Solutions, Varsha Aithala, Karthik Suresh
Reforming The Indian Bar: The Limits Of Technological Solutions, Varsha Aithala, Karthik Suresh
Articles
A majority of Indians do not have effective access to legal services, despite the constitutional promise of access to justice. There are two intertwined reasons for this: the unavailability of a sufficient number of good quality lawyers, and the high costs of accessing legal services. The Indian legal profession is highly unequal, with ‘prestige’ being the currency of upward professional mobility. The professional regulator, the Bar Council of India, simply lacks the capacity to regulate quality. As a consequence, clients lack the information to access lawyers, and to understand the outcomes they desire from them, and the fees they have …
An Analysis Of Ex-Offender’S Perspectives On The Impact Of The Time Frame Of Reentry Programs On The Likelihood Of Recidivating, Angel Yates
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The problem this study explored is how the timing of when reentry services are provided to incarcerated individuals and the impact it will have on their reintegration process and recidivism rates. This qualitative study analyzed the timing of when reentry programs are provided to incarcerated individuals and the impact it has on reducing recidivism rates. This study’s flyer was posted on social media platforms and shared with reentry programs. A total of 20 interviews were conducted. All participants answered the requirement questions via email; for those who met the criteria, consent forms were then sent, and interviews were scheduled. Transcripts …
Inaction As Nonformal Reaction: Rethinking Crime Perception In The Era Of Data Breaches, Irnasya Shafira Hadi
Inaction As Nonformal Reaction: Rethinking Crime Perception In The Era Of Data Breaches, Irnasya Shafira Hadi
Jurnal Kriminologi Indonesia
This study analyses the Indonesian public’s response to government data breaches and advocates for an expanded defintion of nonformal reactions to crime in the digital context. It argues that existing criminological frameworks, particularly Mustofa’s (2021) model—which views nonformal reactions as active and confrontational behaviours such as demonstrations or vigilantism—should also acknowledge inaction, apathy, and emotional disengagement as valid public reactions. This paper employs a conceptual-qualitative approach, combining an interdisciplinary literature review, interpretive policy analysis of the Personal Data Protection Law, and triangulation with digital behaviour data to develop its analysis. This paper reframes apathy as a significant criminological indicator of …
Is Poverty The Root Of All Crime? Rethinking Criminality Amid Institutional Failure In Madagascar, Ramalina Ranaivo Mikea Manitra
Is Poverty The Root Of All Crime? Rethinking Criminality Amid Institutional Failure In Madagascar, Ramalina Ranaivo Mikea Manitra
Jurnal Kriminologi Indonesia
Madagascar continues to grapple with high levels of poverty and weak institutional capacity, creating conditions conducive to widespread and persistent criminality. This paper aims to examine how structural poverty, institutional failure, and state fragility interact to shape patterns of crime through the lens of criminological theories such as strain theory, social disorganisation, and state-centred criminology. Using a qualitative methodology based on a comprehensive literature review of empirical studies, policy documents, and international reports, the paper explores the socio-economic and institutional dynamics underpinning crime in Madagascar. The findings reveal that poverty-driven crime often arises as a rational response to unmet needs, …
Intersectionality In The Maze Of Oppression: A Feminist Criminology Analysis Of Systematic Vulnerability And Exploitation Of Indonesian Women Trafficked To Cambodia, Reza Anugrah, Lifiana Alanisya Mutaharina
Intersectionality In The Maze Of Oppression: A Feminist Criminology Analysis Of Systematic Vulnerability And Exploitation Of Indonesian Women Trafficked To Cambodia, Reza Anugrah, Lifiana Alanisya Mutaharina
Jurnal Kriminologi Indonesia
This study explores the vulnerability of Indonesian women to the crime of human trafficking in Cambodia, analyzing its structural and patriarchal roots. Employing a qualitative methodology through literature review, the paper delineates how socio-economic disparities and limited employment opportunities in Indonesia drive women toward illegal job offers that ultimately result in exploitation. Human trafficking syndicates exploit traditional gender constructs and manipulate identities to entrap victims, even involving women as alleged perpetrators. Criminological and legal analyses reveal a shift toward more complex forms of transnational crime, exacerbated by the use of digital technology. Although the Law of the Republic of Indonesia …
Public Compliance Towards Indonesian National Police (Polri) Authority In The Midst Of A Strained Public-Police Relationship, Ilham Dwi Hatmawan
Public Compliance Towards Indonesian National Police (Polri) Authority In The Midst Of A Strained Public-Police Relationship, Ilham Dwi Hatmawan
Jurnal Kriminologi Indonesia
Public trust in the Indonesian National Police (Polri) has experienced significant fluctuations due to allegations of misconduct, corruption, and excessive use of force. This study examines the relationship between public trust and compliance with Polri authority, particularly in the context of strained police-community relations. Drawing on procedural justice and restorative regulation theories, the research argues that trust directly influences voluntary compliance and that procedural justice alone is insufficient to repair legitimacy deficits. Instead, a dual model combining procedural fairness with restorative reconciliation, including acknowledgment of past harms and community dialogue is proposed as a more effective strategy for rebuilding trust. …
High-Risk Terrorism Inmate Deradicalization: A Complex And Paradoxical Issue In Nusakambangan, Rahmat Amin Siregar
High-Risk Terrorism Inmate Deradicalization: A Complex And Paradoxical Issue In Nusakambangan, Rahmat Amin Siregar
Jurnal Kriminologi Indonesia
Deradicalizing high-risk terrorism inmates is a multifaceted and paradoxical challenge that has not been comprehensively addressed in criminological studies. This research seeks to fill the gaps in previous studies by focusing on the security challenges, personnel difficulties, and prison culture dynamics within super-maximum security facilities in their efforts to deradicalize terrorism inmates. The findings highlight three critical aspects of this complexity. First, the security measures in super-maximum security facilities emphasize the strict implementation of a one-inmate-per-cell system, which minimizes inmate interactions, adheres to high-security standards, and utilizes advanced technological systems. Second, correctional officers face significant challenges, including verbal confrontations from …
Implementation Of Public-Private Partnership Model Towards Ideal Operationalization Of Correctional Institution In Indonesia, Sani Siti Aisyah -
Implementation Of Public-Private Partnership Model Towards Ideal Operationalization Of Correctional Institution In Indonesia, Sani Siti Aisyah -
Jurnal Kriminologi Indonesia
The increasing popularity of Public-Private Partnership (PPP) in prison or correctional institution development and management is currently often studied from an economic perspective that prioritizes state budget efficiency and is rarely studied from a social perspective that prioritizes benefits for the community in the context of social control. Realizing that PPP has positive potential in the ideal operationalization of correctional institution amidst limited human resources and budget, this study examines various correctional institution PPP models using the correction theory framework. This study was designed as an exploratory qualitative study using interview, document studies, field observations and FGD. This study successfully …
