Exploring Decision-Making Experiences Of Social Workers Completing Involuntary Commitment First Evaluations For Inpatient Psychiatric Treatment, Jesse Brooke Creech
Exploring Decision-Making Experiences Of Social Workers Completing Involuntary Commitment First Evaluations For Inpatient Psychiatric Treatment, Jesse Brooke Creech
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
An increasing focus on the recovery, rights, and autonomy of individuals with serious mental illnesses has led to ongoing debate regarding the practice and legal regulation of involuntary commitment (IVC). To ensure ethical and appropriate patient care throughout this complex process, more knowledge is needed about social workers’ decision-making process regarding the use of IVC. The purpose of this study was to investigate the decision-making processes associated with IVC for inpatient psychiatric treatment in North Carolina using the biomedical ethics framework. More specifically, the study addressed how licensed social workers describe their experiences and decision-making processes when determining whether to …
Media Disparity? Analyzing The Media Coverage Of Violent Vs. Non-Violent Crimes In Central Arkansas, Alicia Dorn
Media Disparity? Analyzing The Media Coverage Of Violent Vs. Non-Violent Crimes In Central Arkansas, Alicia Dorn
Theses and Dissertations
The media's disproportionate coverage of violent crimes compared to non-violent crimes may create a skewed public perception of crime rates and safety in Central Arkansas, potentially influencing policy decisions and community relations. This research examines whether news outlets in Central Arkansas cover violent crimes more frequently than non-violent crimes and compares this coverage to actual crime statistics from law enforcement agencies. The study aims to understand the potential impact of media representation on public perception of crime. The study employed a mixed-methods content analysis of three major Central Arkansas newspapers (Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, Pine Bluff Commercial, and Hot Springs Sentinel Record) …

Challenging Batson: Interest Convergence And Permanence Of Racism In Jury Selection, Addrain Conyers, Amanda Bergold, Antoinette Critelli
The Scholar: St. Mary's Law Review on Race and Social Justice
A Batson challenge is an objection to the use of peremptory challenges to dismiss potential jurors based on their race; however, Batson challenges are rarely successful. In this paper, we apply Critical Race Theory (CRT) as a framework to analyze the Batson Challenge. More specifically, we argue that the Batson challenge is a practice grounded in interest convergence that underscores the permanence of racism in the judicial system. We explore three interests of Batson: (1) the protection of the Sixth Amendment right to a fair trial; (2) the protection of the Fourteenth Amendment; and (3) the promotion of public trust …

Your Information Zodiac: An Information Evaluation Framework For The Age Of Generative Ai, Kevin J. Reagan, Kay Coates, Jessica Swaringen
University Libraries: Faculty Publications
Building on information evaluation mnemonics like the CRAAP Test, SIFT, and ACT UP, among others, the authors propose the ZODIAC of information evaluation for an AI-dominated information environment: Zooming in, Other opinions, Dataset, Intent, Authenticity, and Consistency. Each letter introduces students to considerations unique to the critical thinking considerations of AI-generated information, such as datasets and their large language models, evaluating the purpose of a given generative AI, and questioning the authenticity and consistency of generative AI output. Additionally, as an introductory framework geared toward first-year students, the ZODIAC evaluation method does not fully address all aspects of information literacy; …

Barriers To Higher Education In Mississippi Prisons: A Systematic Literature Review And Policy Analysis, Ashley Elizabeth Weathers
Barriers To Higher Education In Mississippi Prisons: A Systematic Literature Review And Policy Analysis, Ashley Elizabeth Weathers
Theses and Dissertations
Higher education in prison reduces recidivism and improves reentry outcomes, yet Mississippi’s prison education programs remain underdeveloped due to financial constraints, policy challenges, and systemic barriers. While national research on prison education is expanding, Mississippi-specific policy evaluations remain limited. This capstone employs a desk-based research methodology, integrating a systematic literature review and policy analysis to examine these challenges. The study synthesizes recent research on the impact of prison education, funding limitations, and policy frameworks, addressing a critical gap in state-specific policy evaluation. The policy analysis evaluates Mississippi’s correctional education policies and funding mechanisms, using Southwest Mississippi Community College’s (SMCC) Prison …

Unusually high employee turnover among local law enforcement officers in the United States has been well documented. This exploratory case study examines employee turnover from a bilateral perspective of both generalists and specialists within local police departments. The purpose of this study is to determine if working in a specialized unit has any effect on employee turnover amongst local police officers in Mississippi. This study used qualitative methods to conduct interviews with thirty-four officers from four different police departments encompassing Mississippi’s northern, southern, eastern, and western regions. The interviews were conducted with individuals at the rank of officer and having …

Department of Justice Studies Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
Hospital-based violence intervention programs (HVIPs) are a form of community violence intervention designed to address trauma resulting from violent injuries. This public health approach has been implemented across the United States since the 1990s, with numerous qualitative and quantitative studies evaluating its effectiveness. Manual systematic reviews by domain experts have helped identify major themes and research gaps. While these reviews are valuable for synthesizing the existing literature, thisprocess can be time-consuming and labor-intensive, given the vast amount of research in public health and criminal justice. To meet the urgent need for accessible insights into the violence-related literature, more efficient methods …

Towards Fair Sequential Resource Allocation: Algorithmic Designs, Interventions, And Evaluations, Ashwin Kumar
Towards Fair Sequential Resource Allocation: Algorithmic Designs, Interventions, And Evaluations, Ashwin Kumar
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
This thesis develops a comprehensive framework for fair sequential resource allocation in multi-agent systems where a centralized allocator coordinates actions under global feasibility constraints, while satisfying preferences of different agents. Ranging from ridesharing platforms and homelessness intervention programs to power grid management, such systems play a critical role in shaping access to essential resources. Yet, existing approaches to resource allocation often prioritize aggregate utility, leading to systematic inequities across individuals and groups, particularly in sequential settings where decisions unfold over time. To address this challenge, we introduce the Distributed Evaluation, Centralized Allocation (DECA) framework, which unifies a broad class of …
