Revisiting Rural Crime: The Contributions Of Labor Markets And Interdependency, Kristina J. Thompson
Revisiting Rural Crime: The Contributions Of Labor Markets And Interdependency, Kristina J. Thompson
Dissertations
Although rural communities – which are home to nearly 20 percent of the U.S. – have experienced disruptive labor market restructuring, few studies examine how such events influence rural crime. Moreover, general methodological approaches to rural crime treat rural places as isolated and unaffected by the broader labor market conditions around them, despite a growing body of sociological literature which suggests that urban and rural communities have varying degrees of interdependence. Drawing from urban crime theories emphasizing the importance of place and systemic relations, this dissertation explores how shifting labor market conditions and extra-local labor market opportunities influenced crime in …

The Crimes Of Child Pornography In Light Of Sustainable Development “Lebanon As A Model”, Tarteel Darwish
The Crimes Of Child Pornography In Light Of Sustainable Development “Lebanon As A Model”, Tarteel Darwish
BAU Journal - Creative Sustainable Development
This research deals with one of the most sever international crimes at the time, which is child exploitation in pornographic materials. The Lebanese legislator has recently incorporated this crime in the Electronic Transactions and Personal Data Act enacted on October 18, 2018, by replacing articles 535 and 536 of the Penal Code with article 120 under new provision entitled “Exploitation of Minors in Pornographic Materials”. Undoubtedly, this criminalization falls within the agenda of the 2030 Sustainable Development plan, developed and promoted by the United Nations, which presents a comprehensive blueprint to ensure that all humans are respected and living peacefully …

Servant Leadership And Presidential Immigration Politics: Inspiration From The Foot-Washing Ritual, Victor C. Romero
Servant Leadership And Presidential Immigration Politics: Inspiration From The Foot-Washing Ritual, Victor C. Romero
Washington and Lee Journal of Civil Rights and Social Justice
President Donald Trump’s immigration agenda has been criticized by pundits and scholars alike and has been thwarted by courts concerned about executive overreach. This Article contributes to this chorus of critics by viewing the current immigration regime from a Christian perspective on servant leadership, contrary to the stereotype that Christianity necessarily aligns with any one particular political brand. Jesus Christ’s entreaty that his disciples wash each other’s feet provides a useful lens through which to evaluate whether this Administration’s work effectively advances communitarianism, a value consistent with Christian immigration ethics. An examination of a range of immigration policies—from the Muslim …
Fighting America’S Best-Selling Product: An Analysis Of And Solution To The Opioid Crisis, Ashley Duckworth
Fighting America’S Best-Selling Product: An Analysis Of And Solution To The Opioid Crisis, Ashley Duckworth
Washington and Lee Journal of Civil Rights and Social Justice
Deaths from drug overdoses have doubled over the last ten years and are now the leading cause of accidental death in the United States. Although some overdoses may have involved more than one drug, prescription and/or illicit opioids were involved in many of these drug overdose fatalities. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and Congress have enacted a string of regulations, statutes, and programs since the early 1990s, but nothing has seriously improved the opioid epidemic as it stands. If anything, the use of opioids has persisted. Many people want pharmaceutical companies to …

Homelessness, Criminal Responsibility, And The Pathologies Of Policy: Triangulating On A Constitutional Right To Housing, R. George Wright
St. John's Law Review
(Excerpt)
The importance of a roof over one’s head seems clear to most of us. But private charity, the insurance markets, and the regulatory state offer no guarantees that this most elemental need will be even minimally met. This Article focuses on the continuing denial of any federal constitutional right to even minimal housing, despite the sense that basic values such as meaningful liberty, equality, community, fundamental human flourishing, and basic capacity development seem to suggest a right.
Stingray Cell-Site Simulator Surveillance And The Fourth Amendment In The Twenty-First Century: A Review Of The Fourth Amendment In An Age Of Surveillance, And Unwarranted, Harvey Gee
St. John's Law Review
(Excerpt)
This Review discusses two timely and insightful books examining the changing relationship between privacy and the Fourth Amendment in the digital era. Part I discusses the tensions between the need to protect privacy rights and the slowly evolving legal landscape during a time of rapidly changing technology, to introduce David Gray’s The Fourth Amendment in an Age of Surveillance. His book explains how the Fourth Amendment, though embattled, can have a prominent role in twenty-first century discussions of privacy, technology, and surveillance. Gray’s analysis is engaged to broaden the conversation about Stingray technology. This section analyzes a sampling of …

Teaching About The Dark Web In Criminal Justice Or Related Programs At The Community College And University Levels., Scott H. Belshaw, Brooke Nodeland, Lorrin Underwood, Alexandrea Colaiuta
Journal of Cybersecurity Education, Research and Practice
Increasingly, criminal justice practitioners have been called on to help solve breaches in cyber security. However, while the demand for criminal justice participation in cyber investigations increases daily, most universities are lagging in their educational and training opportunities for students entering the criminal justice fields. This article discusses the need to incorporate courses discussing the Dark Web in criminal justice. A review of existing cyber-criminal justice programs in Texas and nationally suggests that most community colleges and 4-year universities have yet to develop courses/programs in understanding and investigating the Dark Web on the internet. The Dark Web serves as the …

Show Me, Don’T Tell Me: A Picturesque View Of Perceptions Of Police, Nancy Marion, Jason Twede
Show Me, Don’T Tell Me: A Picturesque View Of Perceptions Of Police, Nancy Marion, Jason Twede
Sociology, Social Work and Anthropology Faculty Publications
A positive relationship between law enforcement and the public is critical for the effective operation of the agency and continued safety of the community. The public’s perception of law enforcement officers is one indication of the nature of that relationship. Past research on perception of the police has used questionnaires to untangle how the public views officers. This research uses an alternative method to measure the public’s perceptions of the police by asking respondents to draw a picture of a police officer. By analyzing the drawings, it can be seen what characteristics people identify with law enforcement. This study analyzed …

An Organizational Analysis Of Foreign National Prisoners’ Participation Possibilities In Flanders (Belgium), Dorien Brosens, Flore Croux, Bart Claes, Stijn Vandevelde, Liesbeth De Donder
Journal of Prison Education and Reentry (2014-2023)
This mixed-method study first provides insight into the Belgian prison population — particularly foreign national prisoners — based on an analysis of the penal database SIDIS Suite (N = 10,356). Second, qualitative telephone interviews have been conducted with the activity coordinators of all Flemish and Brussels prisons (N = 17) to investigate which prison activities (e.g., cultural, educational, and health-related activities, sports, vocational training, and forensic welfare services) are available to, and accessible by foreign national prisoners. This article demonstrates several initiatives that have been taken to enhance foreign nationals’ participation in prison activities and highlights the struggles that activity …
Prescription-Drug Policing: The Right To Health Information Privacy Pre- And Post-Carpenter, Jennifer D. Oliva
Prescription-Drug Policing: The Right To Health Information Privacy Pre- And Post-Carpenter, Jennifer D. Oliva
Duke Law Journal
This Article operates at the intersection of privacy law, Fourth Amendment doctrine, and prescription-drug surveillance instigated by the U.S. drug-overdose crisis. Reputable reporting sources frequently frame that ongoing crisis as a prescription-drug-overdose “epidemic.” Current epidemiological data, however, indicate that the majority of American overdose deaths are now a result of illicit and polysubstance drug use and not prescription-opioid misuse. The prescription-opioid-centric frame has nonetheless sparked the rapid rise of surveillance of prescribers and patients in the form of state prescription-drug monitoring program (“PDMP”) databases. State PDMPs, which maintain and analyze significant data concerning every dispensed controlled substance, surreptitiously collect a …

Appendix B: Ohio Attorney General Facial Recognition Task Force Proposal On Monitoring, Auditing, Enforcement And Transparency, Brian E. Ray, Dennis Hirsch
Law Faculty Reports and Comments
Policy controls that govern agency activity generally contain at least two components: (1) a substantive policy; and (2) a governance structure for ensuring implementation of and compliance with that policy. Effective controls require both. This proposal focuses on the second component, the governance structure. Specifically, it addresses routine monitoring, annual audits, enforcement of the AG’s policies that govern the facial recognition system, and public transparency. Established facial recognition policies, including those that the Task Force has looked to as models, recognize the importance of establishing such a governance structure.

Bayesian Analysis Of The Epsilon Skew Exponential Power Distribution, Michael Ghebremeskel Weldensea
Bayesian Analysis Of The Epsilon Skew Exponential Power Distribution, Michael Ghebremeskel Weldensea
Theses and Dissertations
The Epsilon Skew Exponential Power Distribution (ESEP) that was introduced by Elsalloukh et al. (2005) is an asymmetric distribution used for modeling asymmetric data. The ESEP includes Normal, Laplace, Epsilon Skew Normal (ESN), and Epsilon Skew Laplace (ESL) as particular cases, Elsalloukh et al. (2005). In the present study, since the ESEP distribution encompasses members with skewed and symmetric distributions, we perform and investigate the Bayesian analysis of this distribution using the methods of latent variables and uniform scale mixture for implementing the most common Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) algorithm known as Gibbs sampling. Furthermore, we develop the posterior …
