Mental Health Focus As A Deterrent For Justice Involved Youth, Miyah Seckinger Apr 2022

Mental Health Focus As A Deterrent For Justice Involved Youth, Miyah Seckinger

Honors Projects

Tough-on-crime policies regarding youthful offending have resulted in a pendulum swing in which the juvenile justice system has shifted from a rehabilitative focus to one of punishment. The current paper evaluates different mental health program alternatives, as an option to return to a rehabilitative focus for juveniles, with a major focus on the Juvenile Treatment and Support Court in Kent County, Michigan. Through a qualitative analysis, there were findings of initial success with the youthful offenders presented in the court. Recommendations and limitations from the study are presented to aid further policy change and research.

The Influence Of Right-Wing Media On Political Racialization, Alex Regan

Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects

The rise of right-wing media in the United States begs the question of how it is impacting American political culture. The recently increasing rate of political polarization in the United States, specifically along racial lines, poses a potential issue for American democracy. Through comparative analysis of Fox News and their counterparts in the United Kingdom, France, and Germany, this study seeks to address what specifically has caused Fox to be so successful in reproducing racial propaganda.

Understanding The Role Of Educator: Leveraging Social-Emotional Learning In Service Of Equity And Inclusion In K-12 Public Schools, Jeanne Baskin

Counseling and Psychology Dissertations

Following a comprehensive literature review on the topic of social-emotional learning (SEL), a noticeable gap revealed insufficient research to ensure all students gain access to the benefits of SEL, particularly racially diverse students from under-resourced backgrounds. As a result, this qualitative research study used narrative inquiry to explore the beliefs, viewpoints, and lived experiences of educators working in a K-12 public school setting related to social-emotional learning and equity in education. A purposive sampling strategy was utilized to invite 14 participants to share in a semi-structured interview conducted virtually. Data from participant interviews were investigated through thematic analysis to bring …

When "First, Do No Harm" Fails: A Restorative Justice Approach To Workgroup Harms In Healthcare, Pedro L. Flores

Dissertations

In healthcare, workgroup mistreatment is a pervasive problem that begins during medical education (medical and nursing school) and becomes embedded in the “hidden curriculum of professionalism,” which dissuades and even punishes learners for talking about abuse they witness. Furthermore, the mistreatment of healthcare providers (HCPs) pervades all disciplines in the healthcare delivery chain due to a combination of cultural factors, systemic pressures, dysfunctional hierarchies, and leadership’s tolerance of intimidating and disruptive behaviors. Not surprisingly, 18% of U.S. HCPs have left the medical field since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, and burnout, stress, anxiety, and increased workloads have been identified …

Evaluating A Relationship Education Program With Incarcerated Adults, Terra L. Jackson, Francesca Adler-Baeder, Leah Burke, Silvia Vilches

Journal of Human Sciences and Extension

Research indicates healthy family relationships can reduce recidivism. More effort has been placed towards providing family life programming in prisons to promote healthy individual and relational functioning, yet only a handful of studies have evaluated and provided insight on relationship education (RE) for incarcerated adults. This study contributes to this emerging effort and examines changes following participation in a RE program, using a sample of 461 incarcerated men and women. Findings indicate significant improvements in anxiety and depressive symptoms and conflict resolution skills. Additional tests of moderation of change by gender, relationship status, and child age revealed a greater change …

131 -- Primary Loss To Write-In Victory: A District-Based Analysis Of The 2021 City Of Buffalo Mayoral Election, Alexander Maccallini

GREAT Day Posters

The 2021 mayoral election for the City of Buffalo, New York was unprecedented in the city’s history. That year’s Democratic Primary saw India Walton, a union-backed progressive upstart, upset the incumbent Mayor Byron Brown. Brown, having served in consecutive terms since 2005, promptly embarked on a write-in campaign. His rhetoric during the campaign echoed fears of moderates and conservatives towards criminal justice reform and economic equity. In the general election, Brown pulled off an unprecedented write-in victory over Walton. This research will examine the circumstances of this election, by analyzing factors that made each candidate’s campaign successful. Data on election …

The Future Of The Allen Charge In The New Millennium, Caleb Epperson Apr 2022

The Future Of The Allen Charge In The New Millennium, Caleb Epperson

Arkansas Law Review

"In matters of truth and justice, there is no difference between large and small problems, for issues concerning the treatment of people are all the same." Following the death of George Floyd on May 25, 2020, social and political movements grew rapidly nationwide to combat the prevalence of police brutality against African-American communities. The impact of the ongoing Black Lives Matter movement has been observed in both cities across the United States and in related movements internationally. This movement highlights the necessity for police reform and catalyzes the public’s growing call for greater criminal justice reform. To achieve the goals …

Symposium: Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity, & The Constitution: Queer Black Trans Politics And Constitutional Originalsim, Marc Spindelman

ConLawNOW

Queer Black trans politics offer an important frame for understanding the current constitutional moment. This is a moment in which the Supreme Court’s newly enthroned constitutional originalist project is taking off in ways that have race, sex, sexuality, and trans equality rights in its sights. Thinking with queer Black trans politics—and, in particular, their demands for intersectionality and for centering Black trans lives—this Essay presents a distinctive topology of LGBTQ rights and their intersections with constitutional race and sex guarantees. It considers how a queer Black trans-focused intersectional thinking plays out, including in the context of reproductive rights, and traces …

Public Health Interventions For Children Of Incarcerated Parents, Daniel Bullman

GS4 Student Scholars Symposium

The impact of social and structural determinants of health have lifelong consequences on an individual’s quality of life. Literature focusing on child health and wellbeing of incarcerated parents indicate significant negative health outcomes and adopted detrimental health behaviors. Using a systematic realist review, recent publications were reviewed for their potential discussion or recommendation for interventions in changing health outcomes. This review found that additional research is needed in identifying and testing potential interventions or determining if parallel public health initiatives have had positive impacts in promoting the health behavior change process for children and adolescents of incarcerated parents.

Reintegration Programming, Mattie Windholz Apr 2022

Reintegration Programming, Mattie Windholz

SACAD: Scholarly Activities

Among the goals of the US correctional system, rehabilitation remains important The correctional system strives to successfully reintegrate formerly incarcerated individuals into their communities where they refrain from committing further crime While there was a body of research in prior decades suggesting rehabilitation and reintegration efforts were ineffective (“nothing works”), more recent research has discredited this idea by demonstrating that many programs can be effective in correctional settings (“what works”)

Student Ghettos: Fear Of Crime And Perceptions Of Police Legitimacy Explain Undergraduate Perceptions Of Victimization And Wellness, April Terry Apr 2022

Student Ghettos: Fear Of Crime And Perceptions Of Police Legitimacy Explain Undergraduate Perceptions Of Victimization And Wellness, April Terry

SACAD: Scholarly Activities

Criminological research has examined the role of neighborhood order in explaining perceptions of crime and official crime statistics for decades. When citizens perceive their neighborhood to be socially and/or physically disordered, community and interpersonal relationships diminish, mistrust increases – including perceptions of police legitimacy – and overall individual wellness decreases. While this literature is wellestablished, little is known about these interactions within a college population—these neighborhoods referred to as “studentification” and described as “student ghettos.” Student ghettos are known for visibly delinquent and socially frowned upon behaviors, heightened concern for sexual assaults and rape, and lack of respect and perceived …

Title Ix: Institutional Betrayal And Survivors Of Sexual Assault, Abigail Hayes

SACAD: Scholarly Activities

In 2011, the U.S. Department of Education’s (USDE) Office for Civil Rights “Dear Colleague Letter” specified how schools should respond to reports of sexual assault to be in compliance with Title IX. In 2017, these guidelines were rescinded, leaving some criticizing the new regulations. In 2021, President Biden signed an Executive Order, directing the USDE to review Title IX regulations and to provide new guidance. While national bodies are reviewing the Title IX practices, some survivors and activists have identified Title IX failures. As a result, lawsuits have emerged against colleges and universities. This review outlines university betrayal of sexual …

Adultification: Addressing The Injustice Faced By Young Girl Of Color In The School System, M. Siobhan Drown Apr 2022

Adultification: Addressing The Injustice Faced By Young Girl Of Color In The School System, M. Siobhan Drown

SACAD: Scholarly Activities

Adultification is a form of racial prejudice involving children of a racialized minority being treated as more mature than their biological age and reasonable social standards of development. It “reduces or removes the consideration of childhood as a mediating factor in Black youths’ behavior” (Epstein et al., 2017, p. 2). Adultification leads to a higher prevalence of sexualization, more frequent punishment, and increased alienation of young Black girls within the public school system. This is a systemic issue which requires systematic solutions. The most effective solution would be to diversify the workforce.

Recovering Feminist Lessons From The Past For A Less Carceral Future, Aziza Ahmed Apr 2022

Recovering Feminist Lessons From The Past For A Less Carceral Future, Aziza Ahmed

Faculty Scholarship

In a moment when mass incarceration, police reform, and abolition are dominating national headlines, Aya Gruber’s book, The Feminist War on Crime: The Unexpected Role of Women’s Liberation in Mass Incarceration, takes on one of the most complicated questions of the politics of policing and incarceration: gender violence. Her book provides a history of the uncomfortable relationship between the carceral state and feminist organizing to end violence against women. And, it offers a path forward that begins to address mistakes of the past by reigniting those modes of feminism focused on poverty, welfare, and race that were sidelined with …

America’S Public Defender System: A Day Late And A Dollar Short, Christopher Grondin

MAD-RUSH Undergraduate Research Conference

The right to appointed legal counsel for those accused of felony crimes in America is well known, but the evolution of this right, and contemporary issues in public defense are less well understood. An analysis of case law reveals that the Supreme Court of the United States had certain intentions for an appointed counsel system in the U.S. that have historically not been met. Through analysis of the evolution of case law on this topic, as well as an examination of the systems workings today, informed by multiple public attorneys, specific issues affecting the lives of the accused on a …

The 1994 Federal Crime Bill: An Evaluation Of The Past, Present, And Future Of Its Impact On The Criminal Justice System, Jade R. Philpot

Honors College Theses

The 1994 Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act was signed into law in response to the crack cocaine and crime epidemic of the 1980s. In this thesis I address the major elements of this bill, the racial, financial, and ethical conflicts that arose thereafter, and the reforms that should be implemented today to correct said conflicts.
