"Serving Time And It's No Longer A Crime: An Analysis Of The Proposed Cannabis Administration And Opportunity Act, Its Potential Effects At The Federal And State Level, And A Guide For Practical Application By Local Government", R. Allyce Bailey
University of the District of Columbia Law Review
There has been much recent discussion surrounding cannabis use with some researchers supporting the use of medical marijuana, some investors relishing in the recently booming cannabis and CBD industry, and some states decriminalizing marijuana and even harsh controlled substances. As it appears, at least some public opinion is changing regarding marijuana, but the law has not effectively caught up to that change. Bias in the criminal justice system has led to the over-policing of, higher conviction rates, and harsher sentences for minorities. Thus, the decriminalization of marijuana alone does not remedy the grave disproportionate negative effects on populations of color …
The Missing Piece Of The Puzzle: The Intersection Of Race And Special Education, Tsega Zewdneh Shiferaw
The Missing Piece Of The Puzzle: The Intersection Of Race And Special Education, Tsega Zewdneh Shiferaw
University of the District of Columbia Law Review
The privileges allotted to Americans cannot be compared to any other country’s citizens. Americans have the liberty of saying what they want, thinking what they want, and acting freely in public. Nebiyat Shiferaw (“Nebiyat”) is a thirty-year-old African American man who is unable to speak and live independently because he has autism, also known as autism spectrum disorder (“ASD”). Nebiyat does not experience the same liberties as most Americans; he has gone through special education programs and has overcome discrimination, not because of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (“IDEA”), but because of his parents advocating for him. As a …

A More Grown-Up Response To Ordinary Adolescent Behaviors: Repealing Pins Laws To Protect And Empower D.C. Youth, Mae C. Quinn, Tierra Copeland, Tatyana Hopkins, Mary Brody
University of the District of Columbia Law Review
In February 2020, the District of Columbia (“District” or “D.C.”) Juvenile Justice Advisory Group (“JJAG”), issued an important report calling for decriminalization of “status offenses.” Status offenses are alleged youthful wrongdoings that are prosecuted in the District as “Persons in Need of Supervision” cases.1 This Position Paper provides additional support for JJAG’s recommendations. It offers guidance and suggestions to help the District successfully transition away from PINS prosecutions—while also ensuring community youth feel safe, supported, and empowered in their own lives as they transition to adulthood. The D.C. Metropolitan Police Department has historically been the enforcement arm to address youth …
State Immunity And Inter-State Negotiations On Korean Comfort Women, Dimitris Liakopoulos
State Immunity And Inter-State Negotiations On Korean Comfort Women, Dimitris Liakopoulos
Indonesian Journal of International Law
This study aims to analyze the situation of comfort women and the acquired jurisprudence, as well as a comparison regarding slavery and the protection of human rights at the international level. It also examines the protection of human rights, international responsibility, crimes committed with impunity, interstate agreements, state immunity, victim reparation, and international jurisprudence. A comparative method was used to analyze tribunal sentences at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) or the national level of Italian constitutional law. However, international responsibility is important because it helps to protect slavery and human rights. The argument of comfort women includes the right …
Necessity Of Establishing A Un Specialized Agency For Protection Of Gender Equality, Maziyar Shokrani, Nirmala Many
Necessity Of Establishing A Un Specialized Agency For Protection Of Gender Equality, Maziyar Shokrani, Nirmala Many
Indonesian Journal of International Law
A number of recent global issues such as COVID, rise of the Taliban in Afghanistan, inter-state and intra-state conflicts, and gender inequality in Iran show the unprecedented violence against women and other disadvantaged segments of the societies around the globe despite the restless efforts of existing organizations such as the UN Women to protect women’s right, and in broader sense promote gender equality. The lack of efficiency is partly due to its institutional capacities e.g. lacking independence, founding treaty, law-making/treaty making powers and, developed institutional structures and enforcement powers. This article investigates the shortcomings of the UN Women in fulfilling …
Examining P3 And N2 Amplitudes Following Social Exclusion And Provocation In College Students With High And Low Narcissistic Traits, Kathleen Ramsey
Examining P3 And N2 Amplitudes Following Social Exclusion And Provocation In College Students With High And Low Narcissistic Traits, Kathleen Ramsey
Dissertations
Adults with narcissistic traits are prone to reacting aggressively following provocation due to elevations in emotional reactivity and perceived threat to their grandiose self-views. Prior studies have examined event-related potentials (ERPs) measures in college students with narcissistic traits in the context of risky decision making and facial emotion processing; however, no known studies have examined how those with narcissistic traits react to rejection and provocation at the neurophysiological level during an externally valid social rejection task (i.e., Cyberball). For the purposes of this study, it was predicted that participants with higher levels of narcissistic traits (both total narcissism and grandiose …
#Listentosurvivors: A Case Study Of Three Human Trafficking Awareness Campaigns On Twitter, Alex Rister
#Listentosurvivors: A Case Study Of Three Human Trafficking Awareness Campaigns On Twitter, Alex Rister
Kaleidoscope: A Graduate Journal of Qualitative Communication Research
Although human trafficking is a widespread issue impacting millions of people, anti-trafficking campaigns often misrepresent the problem. Media can distort the reality of trafficking and avoid addressing underlying issues such as violence against women. Digital activism is a critical strategy to accurately communicate human trafficking and in particular, Twitter is cited as important for such efforts. This case study examines 100 tweets from Polaris Project, Girls Educational and Mentoring Services, and End Slavery Now. A thematic analysis of 100 tweets was conducted to reveal three primary themes: realistic information of practical value, feminist voices and stories, and engagement with other …
Predicting The Need For Competency To Stand Trial Evaluations In Washington State, Kayla Wetzig
Predicting The Need For Competency To Stand Trial Evaluations In Washington State, Kayla Wetzig
Summer Interdisciplinary Research Symposium
The number of referrals for competency to stand trial (CST) evaluations nationally are overwhelming the criminal justice system. In several states, there have been lawsuits challenging the timeliness of these evaluations as a violation of rights to a fair and speedy trial. Washington is one of those states that has seen a sharp increase in referral rates in recent years, which may be caused by the notable increases in population, homelessness, and crime rates. Trueblood vs. DSHS (2015), a lawsuit against Washington's Department of Health, found delays in CST evaluations and restoration led to an unlawful delay in proceedings. Trueblood …

Averting Tragedy: An Exploration Of Thwarted Mass Public Shootings Relative To Completed Attacks, Michael Rocque, Madison Gerdes, James Alan Fox, Grant Duwe, Madeline Clark
All Faculty Scholarship
Scholarship on mass public shootings has increased in recent years as comprehensive datasets have become more available. As a result, much is known about the contextual and offender related characteristics of such attacks. However, less research has been conducted on attacks that were planned but ultimately did not occur. Understanding how mass public shootings may be thwarted or averted is important for both policy and theoretical reasons. In this paper, we describe a new dataset of averted mass public shooting threats (N = 194) from 2000–2019 and compare them to mass public shootings that were completed during this time (N …

How And When Do Psychological Contract And Justice Perceptions Affect The Relationship Between Servant Leadership And Employee Work Outcomes?, Annam Bibi
Makara Human Behavior Studies in Asia
Academicians and practitioners have always been equally attracted to learning the effects of varied leadership styles on employee work outcomes. This study examines how servant leadership influences employee behaviors (organizational commitment, organizational citizenship behavior, and employee engagement) and evaluates the roles discharged by psychological contract and organizational justice perceptions on these relationships. Data were collected from 168 employees working in public hospitals. A standardized questionnaire was used to gather the data. Hypotheses were tested through hierarchical regression analyses. The study results revealed that servant leadership is positively associated with organizational commitment, organizational citizenship behavior, and employee engagement. Psychological contract partially …

Let's Start Talking: A Reflective Essay On Minority Students' Experiences In Academic Spaces, Publishing, And Journal Involvement, Ryan S.C. Wong, Kayla M. Martensen
Criminal Justice & Criminology: Faculty Publications & Other Works
Graduate student population is diversifying, but not enough intentional resources are given to support minority graduate students. The need to publish during graduate school in order to have a chance for an academic career generates inequalities. Publishers and editors need to be more intentional in creating paid positions and recruiting submissions from a diversity of graduate students. We encourage more minority students to share their stories and form interdisciplinary support groups beyond a single institution or country context.
A Link Between Radicalisation Models And Extremist Propaganda, Kyle Msall, Noor Lary
A Link Between Radicalisation Models And Extremist Propaganda, Kyle Msall, Noor Lary
All Works
This study explores the relationship between extremist propaganda and the process of radicalisation. Two theories of the radicalisation process are explored which include a linear approach and a non-linear approach. The Dabiq magazines published by ISIS were analysed qualitatively to understand the possible link between propaganda and radicalising future ISIS fighters. The findings found that the Dabiq magazines were in line with Sageman’s radicalisation process which is non-linear. All of the magazine issues contained various aspects that fit into the four stages of Sageman’s model which suggests that ISIS is attempting to radicalise future enlistments by using multiple methods within …

This is an edited transcript of three conversations on Zoom which took place on 3 February, 24 March and 23 April 2021. Hilary spoke from Melbourne and the NSW South Coast in Australia, Christine was based in Southampton in the UK and Shelley was in Lund, British Columbia in Canada – all of us in various phases of COVID lockdown.
The first conversation focused on how our journey started, including the ‘Feminist approaches’ article and the impact it had, or has not had, on international law. The second conversation focused more on our subsequent work, and the different approaches we …

Bias In The Jury Box: The Sociological Determinants Of Jury Selection For Capital Cases In North Carolina, Alessandra Quattrocchi
Bias In The Jury Box: The Sociological Determinants Of Jury Selection For Capital Cases In North Carolina, Alessandra Quattrocchi
Dartmouth Undergraduate Journal of Politics, Economics and World Affairs
An evaluation of four Wake County capital cases from 2014-2018 reveals the disparate effects that the jury selection process had on Black and female potential jurors and especially on Black female potential jurors. The requirement that capital jurors be willing and able to sentence death systematically excluded Blacks and females, with Black females excused for this reason at a rate over three times higher than White males. Black potential jurors not struck for death qualification were disproportionately excluded by prosecutorial peremptory strikes at a rate nearly two times greater than Whites. Final analyses conclude that Black females had significantly lower …

The Abstract Language: Symbolic Cogniton And Its Relationship To Embodiment, Steven A. Lenarduzzi
The Abstract Language: Symbolic Cogniton And Its Relationship To Embodiment, Steven A. Lenarduzzi
ETD Archive
Embodied theories presume that concepts are modality specific while symbolic theories suggest that all modalities for a given concept are integrated. Symbolic and embodied theories do fairly well with explaining and describing concrete concepts. Specifically, embodied theories seem well suited to describing the actual content of a concept while symbolic theories provide insight into how concepts operate. Conversely, neither symbolic nor embodied theories have been fully sufficient when attempting to describe and explain abstract concepts. Several pluralistic accounts have been put forth to describe how the semantic/lexical system interacts with the conceptual system. In this respect, they attempt to “embody” …

Long have the concepts of racism, sexism, and classism existed in human history. However, their definitions and practice have evolved over time. Modernly, they are all considered forms of discrimination. Recently, these topics have been a source of discussion among many disciplines. This thesis serves to add to existing literature outlining the history of these forms of discrimination and how they presented themselves in early American society. All three forms manifested in different forms in early civilizations before being adopted in colonial America. This work also serves to outline how these forms of discrimination exist in present day America. While …
