The Unequal Application Of The Death Penalty In The United States: Critical Analysis And A Just Solution, Muriel Mena
The Unequal Application Of The Death Penalty In The United States: Critical Analysis And A Just Solution, Muriel Mena
Honors Program Theses and Projects
Considerable scholarly attention has been devoted to the question of whether the application of the death penalty in the United States is racially biased. The legacy of the injustices and racial biases that Blacks experience in the United States continues to manifest in ways that have lethal consequences. The lethality of this is indicated by the fact that persons of color who are convicted of crimes punishable by the death penalty are more likely to receive the death sentence than whites convicted of the same crime. Regarding why this is the case, one needs to employ an approach designed to …
Racism In Barnstable County’S Judiciary System, Olivia Brown
Racism In Barnstable County’S Judiciary System, Olivia Brown
Honors Program Theses and Projects
This research outlines how racism is prevalent in the court system in Barnstable County, Massachusetts. When looking at research of racism in Massachusetts’ courts, specifically from the Harvard Law Report titled, “Racial Disparities in Massachusetts Criminal System,” published in 2020, I became intrigued with the topic. This raised the research question of is racism prevalent in Barnstable County’s judicial system. This study consists of interviews with defense attorneys from Barnstable County, detailing their personal experiences and thoughts on racism in the courts. This study demonstrates that there is racism in this court, however it tends to go unnoticed due to …
Comparing The Us To Other Nations: Experimental Evidence On Changing Public Punitiveness, Vinny Coyle
Comparing The Us To Other Nations: Experimental Evidence On Changing Public Punitiveness, Vinny Coyle
Honors Program Theses and Projects
The United States incarceration rate was once on par with other western, industrialized democracies. Dating back to the 1980’s, the United States incarceration rate began to increase exponentially and at an alarmingly high rate, much higher than its comparative countries. Public punitiveness on criminal justice policies has been the driving force behind this. Thus, this study aims to analyze the public’s support for punitive or more rehabilitative criminal justice policies after being presented with accurate information comparing US incarceration rates and its comparative countries since the 1950’s. Participants were recruited via Amazon Mechanical Turk and given a Qualtrics survey link …

“I’M Not Just A Sex Robot”: Perceptions Of Stigma In Online Sex Workers, Clover Stutz
“I’M Not Just A Sex Robot”: Perceptions Of Stigma In Online Sex Workers, Clover Stutz
Honors Program Theses and Projects
The purpose of this qualitative study was to investigate online sex workers’ perceptions of stigma. Due to the increase in OnlyFans creators associated with the COVID-19 pandemic, these creators’ perceptions of stigma were of particular interest. Fifteen participants were interviewed, and themes were developed using thematic analysis. Three themes were identified, corresponding with findings regarding societal, interpersonal, and internalized stigma: ‘Persistent Judgement,’ ‘Strengthened and Severed Ties,’ and ‘Levels of Shame.’ Much of these findings echoed past research, but participants experienced unique manifestations of stigma as well—notably, participants reported navigating strict censorship on social media and often faced the misconception that …

“I Feel Like This Is The Best Thing I'M Good At”- Butter: Exploring Vulnerabilities To Sex Work Through Youtube, Beranda Marseile
Honors Program Theses and Projects
Sex work is a misunderstood occupation riddled with stereotypes and stigmas. Those who participate in the sex work industry, throughout the duration of their career, have been exposed to various magnitudes of violence. This study specifically focuses on female sex workers (FSWs) and delves into why these women would continue engaging in a field as dangerous as sex work. Applying feminist theories and the victim/offender overlap, this study explores the complexities of the sex work industry, along with the violence and stigma that sex workers experience daily, through content analysis of interviews with FSW from a YouTube docuseries. Findings suggest …

One part of this research, which intends to learn more about girls' current and …
Challenging Wrongful Convictions And The Death Penalty In Three State-Level Cases, Theresa Debrah
Challenging Wrongful Convictions And The Death Penalty In Three State-Level Cases, Theresa Debrah
Honors Program Theses and Projects
This paper aims to examine current high-profile state-level cases of those who have been put on death row and shed light on those individuals that may possibly be wrongfully convicted, either factually or procedurally. Previous studies have documented wrongful convictions within death row sentences, which is significant given the permanence of this penalty. This penalty is also disproportionately used against African American defendants. This study addresses three cases that expose similar factors and patterns that further our understanding of how race, victim-offender pairings, and legal irregularities affect death penalty cases. For this study, we used qualitative data to gather the …

Purpose: Older prisoners being released into the community need to be placed in a system to help them transition from living in prison to living in a free society. They must adapt in order to find housing, community services, medical, dental and psychiatric care. When the complex social needs of these persons are not fully met, the emergency department is used as a safety net.
Methods and Findings: This paper describes a patient who had multiple emergency department visits which was his routine method of seeking medical care.
Health Care Policy Implications: We believe that public health policy requiring …
A Transcendental Phenomenology To Understand The Persistence Of African American Males At A Historically Black Liberal Arts College, Jill Triplett Ellis
A Transcendental Phenomenology To Understand The Persistence Of African American Males At A Historically Black Liberal Arts College, Jill Triplett Ellis
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this transcendental phenomenological study was to understand the experiences that contributed to the persistence of African American males at a historically Black college. The problem was that the percentage of 18- to 24-year-old African American males enrolled in the nation's colleges and universities over the past two decades has been lower than the rates of White and Hispanic men and women, as well as African American women. The guiding theory in this study was Tinto's persistence theory. This transcendental phenomenological study aimed to obtain individual living experiences of African American male students enrolled in a historically Black, …
A Personalized Intervention To Increase Regulatory Capacity For Anti-Racist Action, Jennifer Frances Beatty
A Personalized Intervention To Increase Regulatory Capacity For Anti-Racist Action, Jennifer Frances Beatty
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Many White Americans are motivated to be anti-racist but fall short. Often, they become defensive when confronted with their involvement in perpetuating racism. To address this, we designed an experiment to test a personalized, social modeling intervention that targets obstacles to responding constructively to being confronted about racism. In our multi-faceted intervention, participants learned from videos of role models who effectively managed a confrontation after doing something racist. After each video, participants wrote personalized reflections applying what they learned. In a registered sample of 391 White Americans, the intervention increased the personal acknowledgment of racial bias, changed relevant bias-related beliefs …
Leadership Qualities Needed For A School-Based Police Chief, Tridung Tran
Leadership Qualities Needed For A School-Based Police Chief, Tridung Tran
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Although it has evolved over the years, school-based law enforcement remains vital in a school setting for safety and security. The dynamic of school-based law enforcement has been heavily researched through the popular crime prevention program called School Resource Officer. The introduction of police officers in schools’ thrusts law enforcement’s reputation, abilities, and authority into the spotlight. Limited studies have shown the unique leadership qualities needed to lead a school-based law enforcement agency. Police chief qualification is dependent on the law enforcement agency’s requirements and expectations and often requires years of experience and education. Further, there are excellent police chief …
The Myth Of The All-Powerful Federal Prosecutor At Sentencing, Adam M. Gershowitz
The Myth Of The All-Powerful Federal Prosecutor At Sentencing, Adam M. Gershowitz
St. John's Law Review
(Excerpt)
Prosecutors are widely considered to be the most powerful actors in the criminal justice system. And federal prosecutors are particularly feared. While some recent scholarship casts doubt on the power of prosecutors, the prevailing wisdom is that prosecutors run the show, with judges falling in line and doing as prosecutors recommend.
This Article does not challenge the proposition that prosecutors are indeed quite powerful, particularly with respect to sentencing. There are many structural advantages built into the system that combine to give prosecutors enormous influence over sentences. For example, prosecutors have considerable power to bring a slew of charges …

In Car Video For Law Enforcement In Rural Communities, Wade Gray Harrison
Justice
Rural communities in Alaska face technical challenges in law enforcement every day. Over recent and past years, rural communities specifically have faced challenges with obtaining in-car video systems. There are numerous best practices that are research projects done by the Department of Justice and other scholarly resources to support this claim. In this project, a need feasibility and application for Alaska law enforcement and the benefits of in-car video systems for dash cams and transport/in car camera systems will be discussed. Any opposing views or challenges will also be discussed. This researcher will look at a logical argument for the …

Ethical Extensionism Defended, Joel P. Macclellan
Ethical Extensionism Defended, Joel P. Macclellan
Between the Species
Ethical extensionism is a common argument pattern in environmental and animal ethics, which takes a morally valuable trait already recognized in us and argues that we should recognize that value in other entities such as nonhuman animals. I exposit ethical extensionism’s core argument, argue for its validity and soundness, and trace its history to 18th century progressivist calls to expand the moral community and legal franchise. However, ethical extensionism has its critics. The bulk of the paper responds to recent criticisms, including (1) environmental ethicists’ objection against its austere conception of moral value (2), feminist ethicists’ claim that extensionism fails …

How Mental Health Problems, Adverse Childhood Experiences, And Other Risk Factors Impact Recidivism Rates Among Juvenile Offenders, Ashley Elizabeth Brooks
How Mental Health Problems, Adverse Childhood Experiences, And Other Risk Factors Impact Recidivism Rates Among Juvenile Offenders, Ashley Elizabeth Brooks
Student Theses and Dissertations
Between the years of 1985 and 2008, there was a 43 percent increase in juvenile delinquency cases that were processed in the juvenile courts (National Center for Juvenile Justice, 2011). Based on this increase, the juvenile justice system’s ability to function could be diminished. It is important to properly rehabilitate individuals in order to reduce recidivism rates, and society cannot rehabilitate individuals if they do not know the influential factors of reoffending. This research focuses on influencing factors of reoffending among youth centering on recidivism rates of juvenile offenders by utilizing a secondary data set collected by Dr. Jeffrey Lin …
Police Killings As Felony Murder, Guyora Binder, Ekow Yankah
Police Killings As Felony Murder, Guyora Binder, Ekow Yankah
Journal Articles
The widely applauded conviction of officer Derek Chauvin for the murder of George Floyd employedthe widely criticized felony murder rule. Should we use felony murder as a tool to check discriminatory and violent policing? The authors object that felony murder—although perhaps the only murder charge available for this killing under Minnesota law—understated Chauvin’s culpability and thereby inadequately denounced his crime. They show that further opportunities to prosecute police for felony murder are quite limited. Further, a substantial minority of states impose felony murder liability for any death proximately caused by a felony, even if the actual killer was a police …

Co-Twin Relationship Quality As A Moderator Of Genetic And Environmental Factors On Urinary Cortisol Levels Among Adult Twins, Joseph A. Schwartz, Scott Jessick, Jessica L. Calvi, Douglas A. Granger
Athletic Performance Research
Previous research has indicated that genetic and environmental factors shape physiological activity. Cortisol levels, in particular, have received significant attention, with studies indicating substantive heritability estimates across various sampling techniques. A related line of research has indicated that genetic and environmental factors that explain variability in cortisol levels may vary across context and experiences by way of gene-environment interactions (G×Es). Despite these findings, a limited number of studies have examined the extent to which interpersonal relationships may operate as a moderator. The current study focused on co-twin relationship quality as a source of moderation, as twins are more likely to …

From The Headlines: A Textual Analysis Of Social Polarization And Discord In Times Of Pandemic Across A Century In The United States, Alexa Demarco
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Within the past century, three major pandemics have affected the United States – the Spanish Flu, AIDS, and COVID-19. Each of these pandemics has tested the capabilities of the public health sector and the social resilience of the population. Scientists have studied the viruses and implemented public health measures to limit viral transmission, but the social responses to these preventative measures proved to be difficult to predict and control. The dissonance and polarization between the public health initiatives and the response of the general public in the most recent pandemic was apparent. Was this a pattern in other pandemics? Was …

Temperament is an individual’s nature and is widely believed to have a heritable foundation. Few studies, however, have evaluated paternal and maternal contributions to the triadic dimensions of temperament. Rhesus monkeys are widely utilized to model genetic contributions to human development due to their close genetic-relatedness and common temperament structure, providing a powerful translational model for investigating paternal and maternal genetic influences on temperament. The temperament of rhesus monkey infants born to 19 different sires and 50 different dams was assessed during the first month of life by comparing the temperament of paternal or maternal half-siblings reared with their mothers …

The Impact Of Appearance On Transgender Victimization, Tabrina M. Bratton
The Impact Of Appearance On Transgender Victimization, Tabrina M. Bratton
Theses and Dissertations
Trans people experience disproportionate rates of victimization compared to cisgender people. This disparity persists despite the finding that many of the same predictors of cisgender victimization have been identified for transgender victimization (e.g., age, race, income, employment, sex work participation, homelessness), which suggest transgender-specific factors may be at play. Some scholars have proposed that transgender victimization is due to their non-conforming appearance. The purpose of this dissertation was to expand our understanding of anti-trans violence by concentrating on the relationship between appearance and sexual and recent physical victimization. This dissertation builds upon the existing transgender victimization literature by focusing on …

Foul Play: How Racism In The Ncaa Contributes To The Mental Health And Academic Performance Of College Athletes Of Color, Kellie Courtney
Student Theses
While past research indicates that student-athletes of color are vulnerable to experiencing racial discrimination, it is unclear how these experiences of discrimination affect their mental health and academic performance. The purpose of this study was to understand how racial discrimination (in both academic and athletic settings) is associated with the mental health and academic performances of student-athletes of color. To recruit participants, the survey link was posted on social media platforms and was also emailed to student-athletes attending City Universities of New York (CUNYs). Consistent with previous research, the current study found that racism in both academic and athletic settings …
Trauma Exposures Across The Life Course For Individuals Who Experience Incarceration, Maria Morrison
Trauma Exposures Across The Life Course For Individuals Who Experience Incarceration, Maria Morrison
Brown School Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
The U.S. incarcerates more people than any other country in the world, with 2.2 million people currently behind bars, 60% of whom are people of color. At the same time, there is an unprecedented political consensus to develop strategies for reducing the incarcerated population and safely returning the majority of incarcerated individuals to society. While there has been a substantial research focus on the potential of this population to commit acts of violence post-release, this tells only half the story. This dissertation hopes to provide a more complete picture of the role of violence in the lives of individuals released …
The Cost Of Child Support: Policy Design And Father Identity, Lara Markovitz
The Cost Of Child Support: Policy Design And Father Identity, Lara Markovitz
Brown School Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Child support policy is one of the key forces in the lives of families in the U.S., where 1 in 4 children and half of African American children live apart from their fathers (Carlson et al., 2017; Grall, 2020; U.S. Census Bureau, 2014). Most unmarried fathers of newborns express a strong desire and commitment to their children (Carlson & McLanahan, 2002; England & Edin, 2007). However, by the time their children turn five, fathers'; involvement (caregiving and time, provision of child support) diminishes greatly (Turner & Waller, 2017). This decrease in father involvement among low-income NRFs is thought to be …
