Using Social Media To Examine Disabled Veterans’ Adaptive Sports Lived Experience At The National Veterans’ Wheelchair Games, Heather Harding
Using Social Media To Examine Disabled Veterans’ Adaptive Sports Lived Experience At The National Veterans’ Wheelchair Games, Heather Harding
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Capstones
Considered the world’s largest annual rehabilitative wheelchair games event for Veterans in the United States, the National Veterans Wheelchair Games (NVWG or the Games), co-hosted annually by the Department of Veterans Affairs and Paralyzed Veterans of America, is a long-standing event that offers a view into how adaptive sports and recreational activities can impact Veterans with disabilities. This hermeneutic phenomenological qualitative study sought to discover if the Veteran athletes, who participated in the NVWG between 2017 and 2021, described their lived experiences through the lens of their public social media posts on Instagram, and if so, what can be gleaned …

The Art And Science Of Teaching Through Simulation, Teri Triguba Williams, Tim Scala, Josh Inocalla, Annie Huckaba
Learning and Educational Center Virtual Teaching and Learning Conference
The use of simulation as a mechanism for learning is a powerful one. If your learning objectives include preparing students for real-world encounters, working with simulation as a vehicle is highly effective. Further, through this presentation, participants will not only gain insight into simulation, but they will also learn how to use reflective best practices to help assess student, curriculum, and program success.
Learning Outcomes:
- Apply the use of simulation in their roles as educators.
- Evaluate simulation-focused lessons through the use of reflective best practices.
- Create lessons that incorporate simulations as a component for learning.

Value Propositions Of Implemented E-Government Projects: Towards Developing A Framework From A Systematic Review, Yusuf Ephraim Chidama, Chidi Ononiwu
The African Journal of Information Systems
This study aims to develop a framework that identifies and measures the value propositions of implemented e-Government projects. Consequently, the study conducted a systematic review using a concept-centric and thematic approach by reviewing 84 articles as primary research data. In doing so, it identified: (1) effective public organizations; (2) quality service delivery; (3) open government and democratic value; and (4) social value and well-being. Furthermore, two gaps were identified, namely a dearth of studies on the measures well as actualization, and sustainability of the value propositions. The study synchronized the identified value propositions to develop a framework for value propositions …

Active Learning In Practice: Integrating The Digital Mastering Apa Style Student Workbook In A Canvas Course, Vanaja Nethi, Kate Ramunda
Learning and Educational Center Virtual Teaching and Learning Conference
Undergraduate and graduate students in all disciplines need to develop excellence in scholarly writing to communicate their ideas to peers in the academic community effectively. One of the most widely used set of guidelines to help students achieve excellence in scholarly writing is the APA Style. The Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association is the main resource for this.
In this session, the presenters will introduce a new digital-only resource, Mastering APA Style Student Workbook released last year that matches the organization of The Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (7e). The resource utilizes active learning, interactive learning, …

Honors College Theses
How do jurors' responses to Non-White defendants in the Criminal Courts change when they are primed to think about police discrimination? There are general disparities within the Criminal Justice System of the United States that negatively impact racial minorities. This paper discusses these general disparities within the Criminal Justice System of the United States. Black and Latinx individuals are charged and sentenced for crimes involving drugs at higher rates than Whites. They are also more likely to face the death penalty or longer sentences. I look at whether or not priming jury members to think about police discrimination will decrease …

Myths, Misconceptions, And Misrepresentations: An Examination Of Erroneous Human Trafficking Beliefs, Sarah M. Vanorder
Honors College Theses
Human trafficking is a crime that effects people all over the globe and an estimated 24.9 million people are currently being exploited through some form of human trafficking. Despite its prevalence, there are a variety of myths regarding human trafficking that are commonly believed by the public. The proliferation of these myths can have damaging effects and ultimately prevent survivors from receiving the help they need. The aim of this study is to discover factors that lead to the belief of these myths about human trafficking. To uncover these factors, a survey was administered in October 2020 and completed by …

An Evidence Review Of Behavioural Economics In The Justice Sector, Brian Barry, Lucia Morales, Aiden Carthy
An Evidence Review Of Behavioural Economics In The Justice Sector, Brian Barry, Lucia Morales, Aiden Carthy
Articles
Behavioural economics combines elements of economics and psychology to better understand how and why people behave the way they do in the real world. While behavioural economics originally sought to better understand economic decision-making, it has since grown in scope and application, and it is increasingly used by governments, government departments and other organisations to shape and implement public policies in a range of policy areas. This Review considers the application of behavioural economics theories and concepts (commonly referred to as behavioural insights) to the justice sector in a range of areas of justice policy in different jurisdictions. Areas of …
Ethical Ai In American Policing, Elizabeth E. Joh
Ethical Ai In American Policing, Elizabeth E. Joh
Notre Dame Journal on Emerging Technologies
We know there are problems in the use of artificial intelligence in policing, but we don’t quite know what to do about them. One can also find many reports and white papers today offering principles for the responsible use of AI systems by the government, civil society organizations, and the private sector. Yet, largely missing from the current debate in the United States is a shared framework for thinking about the ethical and responsible use of AI that is specific to policing. There are many AI policy guidance documents now, but their value to the police is limited. Simply repeating …

Note: Regulating Artificial Intelligence: A Call For A United States Artificial Intelligence Agency, Noah John Kahekili Rosenberg
Notre Dame Journal on Emerging Technologies
this Note draws upon two examples of emerging AI technologies that demonstrate the need for federal regulation: autonomous vehicles (i.e., self-driving cars) and algorithm-based hiring software. Part I illustrates the public safety concerns associated with AI technologies by outlining the inadequacy of existing laws and regulations on autonomous vehicles. Part II addresses the shortcomings of current regulations on algorithm-based hiring software and the issue of discrimination and inherent bias in AI. Part III recommends the creation of a new federal agency to guide AI regulation and enforcement.
Guilty By Reason Of Vanity?: The Relationship Between Jurors’ Socioeconomic Status And Trial Outcome, Zoë Sweaney
Guilty By Reason Of Vanity?: The Relationship Between Jurors’ Socioeconomic Status And Trial Outcome, Zoë Sweaney
Undergraduate Psychology Research Methods Journal
The following paper summarizes the implications, processes, and preliminary findings from a research study conducted by an undergraduate psychology student at Lindenwood University. The study experimentally investigated the relationship between a juror’s socioeconomic status (SES) and the likelihood that they would choose to convict a randomly selected defendant. It was hypothesized that a participant of a higher SES would be more likely to convict a defendant than would a participant of a lower SES. To investigate the validity of this hypothesis, participants (N=13) posing as jurors completed an online survey in which they were tasked with evaluating the details of …

Why Do The Police Reject Counseling? An Examination Of Necessary Changes To Police Subculture., Noel Otu, Ntiense E. Otu
Journal of Health Ethics
Abstract
This paper reviews the concept of police subculture and examines its role in the management and acceptance of treatment for stress-related injury. In particular, we examine the impact of stigma that attaches to treatment within this subculture. The persistence of the dominant police subculture remains a significant obstacle to officers seeking treatment for stress-related illnesses. The subculture has historically resisted acknowledging the need for treatment in response to the occupational and/or organizational stress-related injury that results from frequent exposure to work-related trauma. Many police administrators are still embedded within and resist changes to the subculture, which results in an …

Another Chance, Jay Hymas
Voices of Resiliency: Utah Stories of Substance Use Disorder, Stigma, & Harm Reduction
This is a true story based on Jay’s journey through substance use disorder and recovery. To cope with the complex trauma he experienced growing up, Jay began using marijuana, alcohol, and methamphetamine in early adolescence. He first used opioids at age 14 when he injured his eye at school. As a minor, Jay became involved in the criminal justice system and was eventually placed in foster care. During this time, he participated in mandated treatment programs that helped to plant seeds for his later recovery. As an adult, Jay experienced many years of incarceration, unstable housing, and substance use dependency …

Recall Distortion In Neural Network Pruning And The Undecayed Pruning Algorithm, Aidan Good, Jiaqi Lin, Hannah Sieg, Mikey Ferguson, Xin Yu, Shandian Zhe, Jerzy Wieczorek, Thiago Serra
Faculty Conference Papers and Presentations
Pruning techniques have been successfully used in neural networks to trade accuracy for sparsity. However, the impact of network pruning is not uniform: prior work has shown that the recall for underrepresented classes in a dataset may be more negatively affected. In this work, we study such relative distortions in recall by hypothesizing an intensification effect that is inherent to the model. Namely, that pruning makes recall relatively worse for a class with recall below accuracy and, conversely, that it makes recall relatively better for a class with recall above accuracy. In addition, we propose a new pruning algorithm aimed …

The Value In Secrecy, Camilla A. Hrdy
The Value In Secrecy, Camilla A. Hrdy
Fordham Law Review
Trade secret law is seen as the most inclusive of intellectual property regimes. So long as information can be kept secret, the wisdom goes, it can be protected under trade secret law, even if patent and copyright protections are unavailable. But keeping it a secret does not magically transform information into a trade secret. The information must also derive economic value from being kept secret from others. This elusive statutory requirement—called “independent economic value”—might at first glance seem redundant, especially in the context of litigation. After all, if information had no value, why would the plaintiff have bothered to keep …

Cdvsa Stakeholder Interview Project: Examining The State's Response To Domestic Violence, Rei Shimizu, Kathi Trawver, Heidi Brocious
Reports
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Thirty-six percent of criminal cases in Alaska are flagged as domestic violence (DV), and cases are increasing annually. Additionally, more than half of adult women in Alaska have experienced intimate partner violence (IPV) and/or sexual assault at least once in their lifetime. Clearly, DV is a pervasive public health issue in Alaska, even though DV is recognized as a crime and legal mechanisms are in place to address them. Therefore, this study aimed to comprehensively understand DV in Alaska in the context of the overall judicial response to DV. Confidential interviews were conducted with victim advocates, Battering Intervention …
Rethinking The Crime Of Rioting, Nick Robinson
Rethinking The Crime Of Rioting, Nick Robinson
Minnesota Law Review Vols. 106:2 onward (2021-present)
The fear of riots has long loomed large in the public imagination. This fear is at least partly justified. Riots can present unique challenges, both in the harm they can cause and in the government’s ability to control them. However, from the American colonies to the Civil Rights era, there is also a history of members of largely nonviolent social movements being tarred as “rioters.” This use of the label of “rioting” to undermine dissent is not just a political problem but also a legal one, and it has once again reemerged. Although the Black Lives Matter protests of 2020 …
The Joint Venture Exception In The International Silver Platter Doctrine: Variability And Devaluation Of Cooperation, Jacqueline Pecaro
The Joint Venture Exception In The International Silver Platter Doctrine: Variability And Devaluation Of Cooperation, Jacqueline Pecaro
University of Chicago Law Review
This Comment examines the joint venture exception in the international silver platter doctrine in the context of the use of wiretaps in federal narcotics cases. Under the international silver platter doctrine, evidence obtained through searches (like wiretaps) by foreign law enforcement on foreign soil and under foreign law is admissible in U.S. courts. The joint venture exception qualifies the international silver platter doctrine: if participation by U.S. law enforcement in a wiretap by foreign law enforcement on foreign soil constitutes a joint venture, then evidence obtained from the search is admissible only if the wiretap was reasonable under the Fourth …

The Effectiveness Of Community Music Therapy: An Annotated Bibliography, University Of Denver
Musicology and Ethnomusicology: Student Scholarship
Music Therapy has been a contribution to the aid of mental health professionals who believe that alternative types of therapy, usually in hand with other traditional forms or medications, can be a benefit to those who suffer with mental disorders like depression. It has been an accepted fact for several decades that music therapy is in fact a useful practice. However, over the last two decades, a sub-section of music therapy, known as Community music therapy, has been introduced to mental health professionals and has been subject to data collection and evaluation. I decided to look into Community music therapy …
Embodying The Divine Feminine: Doja Cat’S Use Of Vocal Timbre, Text, And Body In Planet Her To Construct A Feminine Soundscape — Annotated Bibliography, Tommy Dainko
Musicology and Ethnomusicology: Student Scholarship
In 2021 Doja Cat released her album Planet Her, an imagination of a planet where there was no bigotry, and everyone could live in peace. The main theme of her album, however, revolves around femininity and the divine feminine. This paper will examine how Doja Cat constructs these concepts through a variety of ways. This paper will use Black feminist work to position Doja Cat’s work as feminist. Through the use of a variety of ‘feminine’ vocal timbres—both hers and from featured artists on her album—Doja Cat creates a feminine soundscape. Doja cat also embraces femininity and embodies the …
Principles For Managing Burnout Among Catholic Church Professionals, Thomas G. Plante
Principles For Managing Burnout Among Catholic Church Professionals, Thomas G. Plante
Psychology
While a large body of research literature has explored the assessment, treatment, and prevention of worker burnout, much less research has focused on the unique issues associated with burnout in religious organizations, especially within the Roman Catholic Church. Catholic Church employees, whether clerics or laypersons, are embedded within a 2,000-year-old global hierarchical structure and organization that is unique in that it includes clerics with vows of chastity, obedience, and often poverty as well as ongoing crises related to clerical sexual abuse scandals, significant financial stressors, and a faith tradition that often overvalues sacrifice and suffering. The purpose of this brief …
