Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Problem Description
The opioid epidemic has been ravishing communities in the United States for nearly two decades, resulting in opioid misuse, dependence, and overdose-related deaths. Healthcare providers have inadvertently fueled the epidemic by overprescribing opioid medications contributing to 40% of the opioid overdose-related deaths. One in every 48 patients who receives an opioid medication for the first time will become a chronic user of these medications. Furthermore, 6% of all surgical patients will continue chronic use of opioid medications 90 days after their surgeries regardless of absence of pain. With over 50 million surgical cases performed each year in the …
How The United States Can Improve The Prevention And Treatment Of Substance Abuse Disorders, Kimberly E. Combs
How The United States Can Improve The Prevention And Treatment Of Substance Abuse Disorders, Kimberly E. Combs
Classical Conversations
Over thirty million people worldwide suffer from diagnosed drug-use disorders. In the United States alone, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration found in the 2020 National Survey of Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) that of people aged 12 or older, over 40 million reported struggling with substance abuse at some point in their life. Alarming statistics suggest that rates of drug abuse continue to rise worldwide. Drug use is a recognized epidemic in the United States, and it is far from a recent issue. Health professionals, government officials, and researchers have been trying to solve the problem for …

The Fragmented Gateway To Collective Repentance: Race, Policing, And The Black Church In America, Matthew G. T. Denney
The Fragmented Gateway To Collective Repentance: Race, Policing, And The Black Church In America, Matthew G. T. Denney
Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations
This dissertation examines the response of Black faith communities to policing and racial inequality in America. I explore the puzzle of why policing has compelled unique levels of mass mobilization for racial justice among Black faith communities, despite significant disagreement, while other areas of entrenched inequality have not received the same level of attention, despite more widespread agreement. This project draws on historical-archival research, ethnographic work based in New Haven, focus group interviews with Black faith leaders from around the country, and a large national survey to provide a holistic picture of the role of Black faith communities in conversations …
Algorithmic Decision-Making With Stakeholder Participation, Vijay Keswani
Algorithmic Decision-Making With Stakeholder Participation, Vijay Keswani
Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations
The development of trustworthy systems for applications of machine learning and artificial intelligence faces a variety of challenges. These challenges range from the investigation of methods to effectively detect algorithmic biases to methodological and practical hurdles encountered when incorporating notions of representation, equality, and domain expertise in automated decisions. Such questions make the task of building reliable automated decision-making frameworks quite complex; nevertheless, addressing them in a comprehensive manner is an important step toward building automated tools whose impact is equitable. This dissertation focuses on tackling such practical issues faced during the implementation of automated decision-making frameworks. It contributes to …

Tearing Down And Building Up In The Contemporary Workplace: How Reflective Writing Inspires Workplace Learning And Well-Being, Gina R. Pell
Tearing Down And Building Up In The Contemporary Workplace: How Reflective Writing Inspires Workplace Learning And Well-Being, Gina R. Pell
PhD in Organizational Leadership
Continuous learning is critical for workers and organizations, but traditional learning strategies may be less effective as constantly changing business demands and individual needs among diverse and geographically dispersed workers may create barriers to performance and sustainability. Although alternative learning approaches such as experiential and double-loop learning may introduce risks by uncovering new challenges, they may also benefit workers and organizations when designed to bolster empathy and encourage a better understanding of pressures and stress. Reflective writing is an adaptable alternative learning approach that can be paired with existing workplace learning strategies or tailored to specific needs and learning outcomes. …
Privacy And Property: Constitutional Concerns Of Dna Dragnet Testing, E. Wyatt Jones
Privacy And Property: Constitutional Concerns Of Dna Dragnet Testing, E. Wyatt Jones
Honors Projects
DNA dragnets have attracted both public and scholarly criticisms that have yet to be resolved by the Courts. This review will introduce a modern understanding of DNA analysis, a complete introduction to past and present Fourth and Fourteenth Amendment jurisprudence, and existing suggestions concerning similar issues in legal scholarship. Considering these contexts, this review concludes that a focus on privacy and property at once, with a particular sensitivity to the inseverable relationship between the two interests, is Constitutionally consistent with precedent and the most workable means of answering the question at hand.

Less Is More?: Accountability For White-Collar Offenses Through An Abolitionist Framework, Pedro Gerson
Less Is More?: Accountability For White-Collar Offenses Through An Abolitionist Framework, Pedro Gerson
Faculty Scholarship
White-collar crime is underenforced: not enough cases are brought, not many convictions are secured, and when they are, those who were convicted usually benefit from leniency not seen in other kinds of criminal wrongdoing. Calls for accountability center on strengthening the traditional tools of criminal law enforcement to reach actors that have so far eluded criminal liability. These responses, however, risk further entrenching the systems that have led the United States to mass incarceration and its many real and tangible harms. In this Article, I question whether an abolitionist framework is possible for white-collar crime. First, I argue that given …
The Clinic As A Site Of Grounded Pedagogy, Madalyn K. Wasilczuk
The Clinic As A Site Of Grounded Pedagogy, Madalyn K. Wasilczuk
Faculty Publications
Legal education tends to focus on teaching students federal law from hefty casebooks, inculcating the ability to "think like lawyers." In a sea of Socratic lectures and hypotheticals, students often take refuge in clinics as an island of practical skills-building, client centeredness, and individual fulfillment. Yet even clinics sometimes fail to highlight for students how the place where they practice, with its particular political context and history, shapes their clients' lives and legal problems. This Article describes the law school clinic as a site of grounded pedagogy: a teaching method that centers the connection between local history and the present …
Criminal Terms, Anna Roberts
Criminal Terms, Anna Roberts
Minnesota Law Review Vols. 106:2 onward (2021-present)
Core terms used by criminal legal academics bolster the criminal system and ward off radical critique. They do this by conveying implicit messages of three types: that the criminal system is generally accurate, that it is necessary, and that it is well-intentioned and moving in the right direction. While recent legal scholarship has identified other subtle ways in which we send pro-carceral messages, it has not focused on vocabulary. We thus fall behind other entities that have announced vocabulary change, in recognition of the harm that such messages can do. We too have influence, not just through scholarly and public …
Philanthropic Justice: The Role Of Private Foundations In Transitional Justice Processes, Julia Emtseva
Philanthropic Justice: The Role Of Private Foundations In Transitional Justice Processes, Julia Emtseva
Michigan Journal of International Law
In recent years, political transitions have become a major area of interest to private actors, including philanthropies. More and more philanthropic foundations have chosen to donate money to support transitional justice processes across the globe. However, philanthropies often take on not only the role of a funder but also the role of an active participant in transitional justice (TJ) mechanisms. They push for the building of long-lasting partnerships with state authorities and international organizations, and, sometimes, take over and administer certain transitional justice processes. As a result, philanthropic foundations wield considerable power in transitional justice, especially when the state cannot …

Facing Wicked Problems During A Pandemic And Beyond: A Case Study In Using Design Thinking For Ctl Development And Growth, Jenna Pack Sheffield, Devon Moore
To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development
In this article, the authors share the challenges we faced as we launched a center for teaching and learning during the COVID-19 pandemic, and we describe how we used design thinking as a strategy for working through these challenges. The article presents an overview of the design thinking process, a case study of our application of the process, and recommendations for how educational developers can leverage design thinking as a strategy for solving problems related to limited resources and low faculty engagement.

Tourism, Mapping, Retail And Recreational Trails: A Case Study Of Connectivity Between Trails And Adjacent Downtowns In Anniston, Alabama, Usa, Jennifer Green
Theses
This study examines the estimated increase in economic impact on a geography’s local economy by creating cross-marketing efforts between expanding an established outdoor recreation trail to a closely located city downtown commerce district. This research will analyze the resulting potential rise in sales/lodging tax revenues for that city by mapping the trail and downtown district, and cross-marketing the other to users of both or either venue. Potential increase in economic impact will be estimated utilizing IMPLAN methodology by assessing the economic impact on the local economy that a percentage range of increased spending resulting from this cross-marketing effort could generate.

The Psychogeographic Relationship With Memories, Popular Music, And Identity: A Case Study From 1995-2022 Of The Grateful Dead, Margaret Lane Walton
Theses
This paper will explore sonic geography and its impact on human and cultural geography through popular music, specifically the Grateful Dead, from 1995 to 2022. This research focuses on the eventization of the band and popular music post-Jerry Garcia’s death, whereas previous research has focused primarily on the band from 1965 to 1995. The infamous psychedelic rock and roll band was widely known for the created and imagined communities that it forged over their 30-year run. Recent research on soundscapes and music’s role in the study of geography precipitated the need for more attention to music geography. This paper explores …
