Understanding How High School African American Males Articulate Their Experiences Of Mattering And Marginality At School To Teachers And Administrators, Tiffany Leshunda Gipson
Student Theses and Dissertations
Mattering to others is important in society; therefore, knowing how individuals perceive their mattering is essential. The problem addressed in this study is the gap in research of experiences regarding mattering and marginality of high school African American males. The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to examine how African American males perceived their experiences of mattering and marginality in high school to teachers and administrators. A qualitative phenomenological approach and design were used to conduct one-on-one, semi-structured interviews with eight upcoming 11th and 12th graders to gather their experiences. Schlossberg’s Theory of Marginality and Mattering and Critical Race …

Experienced And Anticipated Stigma Among People With Mental Illness When Interacting With Healthcare Workers, Shaindel Feuer
Experienced And Anticipated Stigma Among People With Mental Illness When Interacting With Healthcare Workers, Shaindel Feuer
Student Theses
Research has found that most people have negative attitudes towards those with mental illnesses,
and the resulting stigma and discrimination can be dangerous. Unfortunately, mental health stigma and discrimination are also seen in healthcare providers, with potentially fatal consequences, given that people with mental illnesses have shorter lifespans and are more likely to become ill than members of the general population. This study explored anticipatory and experienced mental health stigma from the patient’s perspective in a sample of 275 people with self-reported mental illness recruited from the online panel Prolific. Between 30.3% (Everyday Discrimination Scale) and 44.1% (Stigma Scale) of …

Activist Bibliography As Abolitionist Pedagogy In The American Prison Writing Archive, Kirstyn J. Leuner, Catherine Koehler, Doran Larson
Activist Bibliography As Abolitionist Pedagogy In The American Prison Writing Archive, Kirstyn J. Leuner, Catherine Koehler, Doran Larson
Criticism
This article describes how undergraduate coursework performs activist bibliography for the largest and first fully searchable digital archive of testimony writing by currently incarcerated people, the American Prison Writing Archive (APWA). The authors argue that when teachers invite students to participate as citizen archivists for the APWA as coursework, through contributing crowdsourced metadata such as transcription and subject tagging, the incarcerated writers whose manuscripts they edit become the epistemological center of the course. Through this pedagogy, APWA authors create and disseminate knowledge about the emotional and physical tolls of incarceration and the need for prison abolition. The article features two …

The Impact Of Community On The Offender's Reentry Process Using Data From The Serious And Violent Offender Reentry Initiative (Svori) On Adult Males And Females, Meta Jean Schlimpert
Student Theses and Dissertations
The objective of this study is to examine how offenders are impacted by their social environment upon being released from prison. Using data from the Serious and Violent Offender Reentry Initiative (SVORI), the current study aims to examine the potential role of community support along with factors including employment, housing, peer relationships, and family support. By doing so, this study aims to identify difficulties in the reentry process and offer suggestions for improvements in this process. The results of the study are discussed, along with recommendations for future studies and policy implications.

Case Study: Reading Multicultural Literature To An Emergent Reader In The Home, Kiyna Twisdale
Theses and Dissertations
This case study was conducted to find what happens when a parent reads multicultural books to their young child at home. The qualitative data collected was used to determine the child’s reactions to the similarities and differences between them and the characters, as well as how multicultural books can be used to address sensitive topics and complex themes in the home. A caregiver, the researcher, collected data from read aloud sessions with her five-year old daughter. After reading seven multicultural books together, the research found that the child was able to make simple and concrete connections with the physical appearance …

Quantifying Implicit Bias In Judicial Legal Opinions: A Natural Language Processing Approach, Philip N. Surendran
Quantitative Social Science Undergraduate Senior Theses
Implicit bias and criminal justice are two concepts that have long been intertwined. There is no justice without neutrality, and yet how do we tell if the actors enforcing the system are actually impartial? In this thesis, I utilize recent advancements in machine learning to attempt to answer this question. Specifically, I use natural language processing to examine the text of opinions written by judges in appellate courts, and I leverage these findings to build quantifiable measures of implicit bias. In particular, I look at the over/under-representation of certain emotions, sentiments and linguistic styles as a proxy for disparate treatment …

What Makes An Impartial Jury? Perceptions Of Jury Impartiality And Court Legitimacy, Joshua P. Freitag
Quantitative Social Science Undergraduate Senior Theses
In light of decreasing trust in courts at all levels of the American justice system, it is more important than ever to understand what affects people’s perceptions of the courts as fair, just, and legitimate. The Black Lives Matter protests highlighted a racial element to perceptions of impartiality in the jury system. Existing literature reveals a complex historical relationship between race and the jury, but little research has been done on public perceptions of race in the jury box.
With a novel two-experiment design using a survey instrument and a half White–half Black respondent sample pool fielded using Prolific, I …
The Health Impacts Of The Trump Administration Among California Immigrants, Claudia M. Calhoon
The Health Impacts Of The Trump Administration Among California Immigrants, Claudia M. Calhoon
Dissertations and Theses
Immigration policy was a marquee issue in the US presidential administration of Donald Trump. Trump’s administration employed both policy and rhetoric related to immigrants to mobilize voters, alter immigration policies and practices, and sustain a narrative of a nation under attack by immigrants. Administration officials were able to undertake these approaches because of existing immigration law, but they did so in more explicitly punitive ways than in recent administrations. The goal of this dissertation is to explore the health impacts of the administration’s practices and their effects. Paper 1 analyzes the immigration rhetoric and policies of US president Donald Trump …

Thingle Things: An Exploration Of The Imperfect, Jesse G. Groom
Masters Theses
I am fascinated by the “imperfect” and ask: What are these so-called flaws? Might they just be misalignments with the plane of expectations which coat our visual processing? The relationship between object and human has grown ever more assuming since the advent of industrial production methods. I posit that the efficiency and profit driven decisions which underly this scale and mode of making have subsequently forced matter into the molds of our whims with little allowance for evidence of disobedience. During the opportunity of my own fabrication practice, however, I can discover new possibilities for the typologies of the things …

Perspectives Of Women Police Officers In The Union Territory Of Puducherry, India, Chemmalar S.
Journal of International Women's Studies
Women face unprecedented challenges of gender inequality despite representing half of the world’s population, yet increasingly, they are entering physically demanding professions such as policing. Underlying police culture is a normative power structure defined by hegemonic masculinity. Discrimination, sexual harassment, and inadequate maternity and parental leave are some of the issues that women police officers face. Despite these limitations, there is a growing demand for women police officers. This study contributes to a better understanding of the issues that women police officers face in their work. It also sheds light on the psychology of women police officers and their approach …

Do Legal And Institutional Reforms In Punjab, Pakistan Protect Women’S Inherited Land Rights?, Iram Rubab, Beenish Malik, Zujajah Bakht Aziz
Journal of International Women's Studies
Economic marginalization is a key feature of gender inequality globally. In Pakistan, which ranks 153 out of 156 countries on the Global Gender Gap Index Report 2020, economic marginalization has significantly hampered efforts towards inclusivity. In comparison to dismal levels of female literacy and formal occupation (traditional measures of development), inheritance is an interesting category—a right enshrined both in Islam (the official state religion) and the country’s constitution. Given Pakistan’s agrarian and otherwise rent-seeking economic orientation, land inheritance plays a pivotal role in financial wellbeing regardless of gender. However, a pervasive denial of women’s inheritance rights has been the norm. …

Transition Planning And The School To Prison Pipeline: A Phenomenological Study Investigating The Lived Experiences Of Alternatively Placed High School Black Males With High Incidence Disabilities, Brandon Garrett Thornton
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this qualitative study was to better inform researchers and practitioners on best practices to ensure that their transition planning practices are person-centered and culturally responsive. Using a phenomenological approach, purposeful sampling was used to conduct semi-structured interviews regarding the shared educational lived experiences of two alternatively placed Black high school males with high incidence disabilities with respect to their transition planning. Participants perceived their transition planning to be student-centered, and expected favorable employment outcomes. Additionally, the participants’ choice to be alternatively placed played a role in their perception of transition outcomes. School personnel also played a pivotal …

Predicting Phishing Victimization: Comparing Prior Victimization, Cognitive, And Emotional Styles, And Vulnerable Or Protective E-Mail Strategies, Loretta Stalans, Eric Chan-Tin, Anna Hart, Madeline Moran, Shelia Kennison
Computer Science: Faculty Publications and Other Works
Phishing victimization is prevalent and results in theft of personal identifiable information (PII) or installing malware to steal PII. Drawing upon social psychological and criminological theories, we conducted a prospective study to assess three groups of predictors to being phished or not: a) prior victimization; b) protective or vulnerable habitual strategies, and c) emotional and cognitive decision-making styles. Students (N = 236) completed a survey assessing these predictors and then about 4 weeks later received a phishing e-mail using the university’s phishing testing system. The e-mail requested that they click on a link and enter their student ID to avoid …

Many of us have likely heard the expression “government of the people, by the people, for the people.” Yet, it is the people who are often excluded from the public policy process. Citizen engagement is typically reactive rather than proactive and passive as opposed to active. Voting and protesting are not the only ways that governments hear the voices of the people. Voting allows citizens to choose individuals who represent their interests, yet their interests are not always represented in ways they desire. Protesting brings attention to issues but doesn’t always lead to problems being solved. This book aims to …

The Unique Promise Of The Alaska Constitution: The Right To Rehabilitation, Adam Beyer
The Unique Promise Of The Alaska Constitution: The Right To Rehabilitation, Adam Beyer
Alaska Law Review
The Alaska Constitution creates a unique promise for those convicted of crimes. In Abraham v. State, the Alaska Supreme Court held that article I, § 12 grants offenders a "right to rehabilitation." Such a right is uncommon; few states, if they have similar protections at all, have labeled it a right. In the years since Abraham, the Court has occasionally addressed claims invoking the right, making clear that its decision was not an aberration. The court's most thorough examination of the right occurred this term in Department of Corrections v. Stefano. This article seeks to examine and clarify …

A Lack Of Uniformity, Compounded, In Immigration Law, Jill E. Family
A Lack Of Uniformity, Compounded, In Immigration Law, Jill E. Family
Notre Dame Law Review
The Administrative Procedure Act (APA) is known for bringing standardization to federal agency behavior. The APA’s framework for adjudication, however, is lax and incomplete. It provides standards, but only meaningfully for formal adjudication, and Congress rarely requires agencies to follow the APA’s formal adjudication procedures. The APA, therefore, expressly allows for nonuniform adjudication in that it requires little of the informal adjudication category that makes up the lion’s share of agency adjudication.
This lack of uniformity in adjudication is prominent in immigration law. When federal agencies adjudicate whether to remove (deport) an individual from the United States, those agencies act …

On June 24, 2022 The United States Supreme Court issued its decision on Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization; overturning Roe v. Wade, and destroying fifty years of precedent to protect the constitutional right to abortion in the United States. This overturning sets a dangerous, new precedent that reinforces the State’s control of reproduction, and criminalizes a woman’s right to choose, with very few exceptions. In states like Mississippi, Black women are already experiencing the highest rates of maternal mortality, incarceration, and poverty.
This article posits that Dobbs operates to maintain a racialized and gendered underclass, and names this phenomenon …

“I am proof that your LSAT score does not define you; law schools need to understand that every student’s lived experience is unique. Thanks to Southwestern’s admissions process I was able to show that I’m more than the numbers on my application.” This third-year law student was admitted to Southwestern Law School and went on to place in the top twenty percent after her first year following an admissions waitlist interview, based on Southwestern’s first-of-its-kind empirically based approach that utilizes factors beyond the typical numerical indicators—in particular, the Law School Admission Test—that drive admissions decisions and limit access to law …
