Time To Heal: Trauma's Impact On Rape & Sexual Assault Statutes Of Limitations, Jillian Miller Purdue, Fredrick E. Vars
Time To Heal: Trauma's Impact On Rape & Sexual Assault Statutes Of Limitations, Jillian Miller Purdue, Fredrick E. Vars
Texas A&M Law Review
Short statutes of limitations for sex crimes ask the impossible of many victims: report the crime before they have recovered from the trauma. Perpetrators go free as a direct result of the injury they caused. Nearly a third of victims of rape and sexual assault have PTSD during their lifetimes. PTSD is associated with three symptoms pertinent to reporting a crime: avoidance coping (avoiding distressing thoughts, feelings, or reminders of the attack), dissociative amnesia (forgetting important or all aspects of the attack), and depression. These symptoms all affect a victim’s psychological ability to report a crime before a short statute …

La Efectividad En La Integración De Una Biblioteca Virtual En Una Biblioteca Escolar De Una Institución Educativa Privada En Puerto Rico, Racaly Hernandez Calderon
Theses and Dissertations
Evaluating The Greet-Stop-Prompt Intervention In Decreasing Racial Disparities In School Discipline, Alexandra Utley
Evaluating The Greet-Stop-Prompt Intervention In Decreasing Racial Disparities In School Discipline, Alexandra Utley
Theses and Dissertations
Exclusionary discipline practices are often considered to be generally ineffective and inequitable, however, they are one of the more common disciplinary practices used in schools today. Although there are many positive alternatives to school exclusion, there are limited disciplinary practices specifically intended to target discipline with racial equity in mind. The GREET-STOP-PROMPT (GSP) intervention, developed by Cook and colleagues (2018), is one intervention found in the literature explicitly created to reduce racial discipline disparities. Although there is currently limited research evaluating the GSP intervention, the results indicate it to be a potentially promising method of equitably addressing student behavior. The …
Equity And Local Access To Jesuit Higher Education: The Catalyst Pilot, Joan Iva C. Fawcett, Catherine Zeisner
Equity And Local Access To Jesuit Higher Education: The Catalyst Pilot, Joan Iva C. Fawcett, Catherine Zeisner
Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal
College access continues to be highly stratified across racial, socioeconomic, and first-generation status. Although there are numerous studies on college readiness programs, the research on the correlation between college proximity and college access is lacking or contradictory. Moreover, minimal research exists on college readiness programs within the context of place-based community engagement at a Jesuit university. This mixed-methods, action research case study investigated how to build accessible and equitable pathways to Jesuit colleges and universities within close proximity of historically underrepresented communities, focusing primarily on first-generation, low-income students of color from Northeast Spokane, Washington. Bordieu’s theories of cultural and social …

An Examination Of Influential Factors Of Academic Dishonesty And Ethical Decision-Making Among Community College Nursing Students, Roshelle L. Lemon-Howard
An Examination Of Influential Factors Of Academic Dishonesty And Ethical Decision-Making Among Community College Nursing Students, Roshelle L. Lemon-Howard
Dissertations
Academic dishonesty remains a pervasive, multi-discipline dilemma which has been reported as having the propensity of resulting in longstanding consequences beyond academic settings. Previous research has suggested that students who participate in dishonest behaviors while attending institutions of higher education have greater tendencies to engage in dishonest and unethical behaviors within professional settings. Notably, schools of nursing are not exempt from academic dishonesty and the ramifications that have been associated with such misconduct. Although academic dishonesty has been examined from various perspectives, and in numerous contexts, current studies that compare relationships between peer and faculty influences on academic dishonesty and …

Legislating Criminal Justice Reform In Louisiana, Jason Callegari
Legislating Criminal Justice Reform In Louisiana, Jason Callegari
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
While best practices in criminal justice reform have been studied and identified, the point at which reform legislation is decided upon and factors related to its passage is a traditionally understudied. My research will explore the factors that influence the political will of legislators who pass criminal justice reforms. Using a constructivist view of grounded theory, my research uses qualitative data to determine patterns of words and generalities implicit in decision-making for legislators in the state of Louisiana by way of semi-structured interviews with current and former state legislators. Coded results will show patterns associated with participants' willingness to support …
An Examination Of The African American Male Perception Of Church Attendance, Edward D. Gaston Jr.
An Examination Of The African American Male Perception Of Church Attendance, Edward D. Gaston Jr.
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The variances among religious groups in the U.S. have been presumed to have weakened, yet class and ethnic variances have been largely overlooked by sociology (Wilde et. al., 2018, as cited in Pyle & Davidson, 2014). Though some research focuses explicitly on African American (AA) men, (Fitzgerald, 2010; Davis, 2020; Truss, 2018) the researcher discovered little evidence emphasizing AA men who are de-churched (Trends in the black church: More faithful, but not immune to decline, 2021; Dechurched: Witness & Outreach, 2021, para 1). The purpose of this qualitative, phenomenological study is to understand why AA males are increasingly becoming religiously …
The Perceived Racial Discrimination Of Incarcerated African American Juveniles By Correctional Officers, Jervaughn Fabian Reid
The Perceived Racial Discrimination Of Incarcerated African American Juveniles By Correctional Officers, Jervaughn Fabian Reid
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
There is an overrepresentation of African American youths at every stage of the juvenile justice system in America, from initial interaction with criminal justice to sentencing and imprisonment. This quantitative correlational study aimed to study the perceived racial discrimination of incarcerated African American juveniles by correctional officers. Statistics indicate that African Americans have a higher probability of offending and incarceration than their White counterparts. Some juveniles are serving long-term sentences, which may go well into adulthood. This study offers general knowledge on what experiences juvenile offenders go through, what promotes such experiences, and how these experiences can affect the population …
A Qualitative Research Study Exploring The Lived Experiences Of K-12 School Teachers Who Serve African American Students Who Speak African American Vernacular English, Kayla K. Davies
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of the proposed transcendental phenomenological study will be to explore the perceptions and lived experiences of k-12 schoolteachers working with African American students and their usage of AAVE in the State of Maryland. The theories guiding this study are critical race theory and Krashen’s second language acquisition theory. This qualitative transcendental phenomenological study will collect data from 12 participants in the state of Maryland using individual interviews, focus groups, and letters. The data will then be analyzed using Braun and Clarke's qualitative descriptive research data analysis plan. The data showed that k-12 schoolteachers mainly perceived AAVE as a …
Unclear Guidelines From The Sentencing Commission And A Prejudiced Warden Result In (Un)Compassionate Release, Mary Trotter
Unclear Guidelines From The Sentencing Commission And A Prejudiced Warden Result In (Un)Compassionate Release, Mary Trotter
Journal of the National Association of Administrative Law Judiciary
Congress first developed compassionate release in 1984, granting federal courts the authority to reduce sentences for “extraordinary and compelling” reasons. Compassionate release allows the Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) and inmates to apply for immediate early release on grounds of “particularly extraordinary or compelling circumstances which could not reasonably have been foreseen by the court at the time of sentencing.” Questions remain about how the BOP and the courts grant compassionate release and whether the courts apply the compassionate release guidelines consistently. The uncertainty is due to the lack of clarity from the USSC to define “extraordinary or compelling circumstances,” …
Aequitas: Seeking Equilibrium In Title Ix, Raymond Trent Cromartie
Aequitas: Seeking Equilibrium In Title Ix, Raymond Trent Cromartie
Sturm College of Law: Faculty Scholarship
Over the past two decades, the scope of Title IX has expanded drastically and now includes the investigation and adjudication of sexual misconduct cases through campus tribunals. Beginning in 2011, the Obama Administration, through a “Dear Colleague Letter” and subsequent guidance, initiated this process by establishing guidelines that required schools to develop and implement policies and procedures for the handling of sexual misconduct cases. Following the publication of the Obama-era guidance, schools scrambled to ensure compliance with the federal guidance, which led to a myriad of applications by universities. Unfortunately, the fallout from the 2011 guidance was widespread litigation initiated …

Key Points In Preparation For Oregon Legislative Session (2024): Examining The Multifaceted Impacts Of Drug Decriminalization On Public Safety, Law Enforcement, And Prosecutorial Discretion, Kelsey S. Henderson, Christopher Campbell, Brian Renauer
Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications and Presentations
These findings are part of a 3-year study to examine the impacts of possession of PCS law changes on: (1) law enforcement discretion, (2) prosecutorial decision-making, (3) courts/sentencing, and (4) public safety. The key findings, unless noted, represent statewide trends and impacts. Prior to M110, other statewide changes in policy, law, and historical events such as the COVID-19 lockdown/court backlog and public defense crisis also had important impacts on enforcement, prosecution/sentencing, and public safety outcomes. As such, data collected during the early implementation of M110 is not likely a reliable predictor of its ultimate impact. The data reported on below …

Looking Backward To Move Forward: Ending The "History And Tradition" Of Gun Violence Against The Lgbtq+ Community, Brett V. Ries
Looking Backward To Move Forward: Ending The "History And Tradition" Of Gun Violence Against The Lgbtq+ Community, Brett V. Ries
Duke Law Journal Online
Anti-LGBTQ+ gun violence is occurring in the United States at an alarming rate. The Department of Homeland Security has even issued a domestic terrorism warning for attacks against the LGBTQ+ community. When the shootings at the Pulse Nightclub in Florida and Club Q in Colorado are combined, fifty-four individuals were murdered and seventy-eight more were wounded while simply existing in an LGBTQ+ space. Both of these targeted shootings occurred within the past six years, indicating that anti-LGBTQ+ gun violence is not a relic of the past. As they were ten years ago, LGBTQ+ individuals are still disproportionately impacted by hate …

Moral Injury, Identity Dissonance, And Reintegration: A Compendium Of Reintegration And Survey Of United States Military Veterans, Thomas Hodges
Doctor of International Conflict Management Dissertations
How do military moral injuries affect reintegration? All service members leave the military eventually, but reintegration can be challenging, bringing changes in career, family life, and friendships, potentially prompting a loss of purpose, drive, and connection. Service members may also struggle with a crisis of identity upon separating from the military, feeling their military identity is incompatible with civilian life. While these difficulties are common for service members in reintegration, they may be worsened by moral injury, the adverse biological, social, psychological, and spiritual effects of experiencing an event that deeply offends a person’s sense of right and wrong. People …

Aequitas: Seeking Equilibrium In Title Ix, Raymond Trent Cromartie
University of Dayton Law Review
In 2011, the Obama Administration introduced the Dear Colleague Letter (“DCL” or “Letter”), which drastically reshaped the nature and scope of Title IX and redefined how sex-based discrimination is viewed and addressed on college campuses around the country. While the overall intent of the Letter was to address historical mishandlings of sexual misconduct on the part of victims, including sexual assault in higher education, many commentators have expressed the concern that the guidelines aggressively pursued this end without considering several sweeping impacts. Where Title IX used to be a means for providing equal access to education through government oversight, through …
How Can They Be Silenced? Why Ohio Must Amend Its Civil Statute Of Limitations For Child Sexual Abuse Claims, Mackenzie F. Reiber
How Can They Be Silenced? Why Ohio Must Amend Its Civil Statute Of Limitations For Child Sexual Abuse Claims, Mackenzie F. Reiber
University of Dayton Law Review
Ohio should abolish the civil statute of limitations for child sexual abuse (CSA) claims because survivors of CSA generally recover memories and come forward with allegations well past the limitations period; courts in states that have eliminated the civil statute of limitations for CSA claims do not become overwhelmed by hearing these claims several years past the date of the abuse; and the perpetrator’s constitutional rights are not violated by abolishing the statute of limitations.

Delta-9-Tetrahydrocannabinol And Cannabidiol Effect On Dopamine Transporter Expression And Function, Delia M. Guzman
Delta-9-Tetrahydrocannabinol And Cannabidiol Effect On Dopamine Transporter Expression And Function, Delia M. Guzman
Student Theses
Drug addiction is a major endemic crisis in the United States with a higher prevalence than any other country. Marijuana and hallucinogens make up a great percentage of the drugs of abuse in Americans ranging from 15 to 64 years old. Marijuana contains over 500 active compounds that contribute to its effects, the major components being delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (Δ-9-THC) and cannabidiol (CBD). Understanding the pharmacological mechanism as well as the effects that they elicit through the dopaminergic reward system is a key factor in being able to understand why addiction is so prevalent in our society. This research was aimed to …
