Education Papers and Journal Articles
This article is about student leadership and service in Catholic secondary schools. Initially the concept of leadership through service is explored with particular reference to the educational setting. The concept of “student ministry” is then considered in the light of this leadership and service. The article subsequently reports on an exploratory research study that focused on the experiences and reflections of principals and selected staff from three Catholic secondary schools involved in student ministry. Their experiences and reflections indicate that student ministry has the capacity to offer all students the chance to develop their leadership potential through acts of service, …

The Value Of Relationships For Theological Development And Engagement: A Phenomenological Study Of How College Students Experience Theology, Kathleen J. Breitigan
The Value Of Relationships For Theological Development And Engagement: A Phenomenological Study Of How College Students Experience Theology, Kathleen J. Breitigan
Master of Arts in Higher Education (MAHE) Theses
The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to discover the essence of college students’ engagement with theology. Theology is the foundation on which Christian beliefs are based, and many Coalition of Christian Colleges and Universities (CCCU) institutions affiliate themselves with core theological doctrines that influence how their institutions function. This study seeks to explore the theological experiences of eight college seniors attending three CCCU institutions. The guiding questions for this study were how do college students define theology and how do college students perceive the influence of theology on their day-to-day experience? Through photo elicitation and semi-structured interviews, four …

Elijah Baker And The Churches He Planted On The Eastern Shore Of Virginia: 1776-1798, Laverne Young Smith
Articles
Elijah Baker was a church planter who spent twenty years planting churches on the Delmarva Pennisula that is shared by Delaware, Maryland, and Virginia between 1776 (when he arrived) and 1798 (when he died). He left quite a legacy on the Eastern Shore. This project highlights his ministry in the Virginia section of the Eastern Shore, and profiles the history and current ministry of the churches that he was directly responsible for planting.
Kids And Kingdom: The Precarious Presence Of Children In The Synoptic Gospels, Arthur James Murphy
Kids And Kingdom: The Precarious Presence Of Children In The Synoptic Gospels, Arthur James Murphy
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
At a time when institutions of faith are increasingly confronted with scandals that have brought the vulnerability of young children to the fore of religious consciousness, some scholars have pointed to Jesus' special concern and affection for children in the Gospels. Scholars are struck by how often the authors place Jesus in relation to children: healing them, blessing them, and challenging their marginal status by characterizing them as models for understanding the kingdom of God proclaimed by Jesus. If the authors had concluded their stories of Jesus' eschatological gathering with the blessing of the children, then their characterizations of children …

Facebook As A Tool For Fund-Raising And Support By Religious Organizations, Mark D. Johns
Facebook As A Tool For Fund-Raising And Support By Religious Organizations, Mark D. Johns
Iowa Journal of Communication
This pilot project explores the use of Facebook by a number of religious and denominationally affiliated non-profit charity or social purpose organizations. International relief agencies, youth ministry organizations, camping ministries, missionary organizations and others have established "causes" on facebook.com that are designed to gather "members," further ongoing interaction, and raise funds. Some have suggested that "causes" function, at least in some cases, as expressions of "brand communities" (Hassay & Peloz, 2009; Muniz & O'Guinn, 2001), and questions exist regarding the strength of social ties in such brand relationships (Haythornthwaite, 2002). Facebook users were surveyed, a variety of "cause" pages were …

Discovering The Inventory Of Spiritual Gifts Of Bethel Baptist Church Of Rock Hill, Inc., Rock Hill, South Carolina, Robert Joseph Crawford
Discovering The Inventory Of Spiritual Gifts Of Bethel Baptist Church Of Rock Hill, Inc., Rock Hill, South Carolina, Robert Joseph Crawford
Doctor of Ministry Projects
The hypothesis of this ministry project is that Bethel Baptist Church does not lack any spiritual gifts that are needed for contemporary Christian ministry. The challenge is which church members possess which spiritual endowments. To discover the church's spiritual gifts inventory, we used Bugbee's spiritual gifts assessments and gave opportunities for the expression of the gifts that were uncovered. The ministry experiment revealed clusters of spiritual gifts in the Bethel faith community. They were the gifts of faith, helps, mercy, and teaching. Ministries formed were prayer team ministries, praise and worship leaders, and a teacher's preparedness team.

Transforming Lives And Communities: A Case Study On Building Partnerships In The Philippines Through Appreciative Inquiry, Rizalina L. Ababa
Capstone Collection
The growing number of poor in the Philippines is alarming. Neither the national government nor any individual organization acting alone has been able to alleviate the rising percentage of poverty. With this prevalent need in the country, networks, alliances and partnerships among several organizations, including faith-based organizations, have been established to help respond to the needs of those living in poverty.
OM Philippines–Cebu Ministries, a faith-based Christian organization was started in 2001. It has worked specifically among the poor through children’s programs in partnership with local Protestant churches. Like many NGOs, OM Philippines has been exploring new strategies to expand …

Helping The Parents Of Middle School Students Communicate Biblical Truths Of Sexuality At The First Baptist Church Of Lenoir, North Carolina, Thomas Russell Hinton
Helping The Parents Of Middle School Students Communicate Biblical Truths Of Sexuality At The First Baptist Church Of Lenoir, North Carolina, Thomas Russell Hinton
Doctor of Ministry Projects
An educational program was developed to discover the role of the church in promoting healthy parent/child communication about sexuality. Believing scripture affirms sexuality as a blessing from God, parents and middle school youth were recruited and led through the study. Surveys measured attitudes, opinions, and understanding of biblical knowledge, anatomy, and communication levels. After the program the families were given two months to observe parent/child communication. Final surveys indicated that the church can play an active role in promoting parent child communication about sexuality, and participants reflected a positive outcome by recommending the continuation of this program as a part …
