The Effect Of Smaller Classroom Settings On Behavioral Outcomes For Students With Autism Spectrum Disorder (Asd), Erika Mull Apr 2025

The Effect Of Smaller Classroom Settings On Behavioral Outcomes For Students With Autism Spectrum Disorder (Asd), Erika Mull

Master's Theses & Capstone Projects

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is increasingly prevalent among children worldwide and presents significant challenges in educational settings due to differences in behavior, communication, and social-emotional regulation. These differences can lead to unexpected and disruptive behaviors, such as aggression, refusal, and elopement, which impact students’ academic success and social interactions. Research has explored various strategies, including early interventions, teacher support, accommodations, and individualized education plans (IEPs), to support students with ASD. However, traditional classrooms with less structure can exacerbate these challenges. This inquiry-based research examines the impact of smaller classroom settings on the expected behaviors of students with autism, specifically focusing …

The Design Report: How Image Generative Artificial Intelligence Is Changing The Culture Of Design?, Katelyn M. Walker Apr 2025

The Design Report: How Image Generative Artificial Intelligence Is Changing The Culture Of Design?, Katelyn M. Walker

Honors Theses

The rapid rise of generative artificial intelligence (GAI) is reshaping the global culture of visual communication professions by automating design and design-thinking, causing an acceleration in the already-shifting values which favor profit, speed, and cost effectiveness over human expression. As the accessibility of GAI models is integrated into creative spaces, opportunities within the profession are beginning to diminish causing introductory and junior level design positions to be highly competitive and out of reach for many beginner designers’ reach. Additionally, GAI is causing the homogenization of global culture and values, ultimately reinforcing the ideas of capitalism. The result has been a …

“Synchronized Parenting Is Like Mixing Oil And Water”: Reimagining Parental Control For Co-Parenting In The Divorced Households, Prakriti Dumaru, Audrey Flood, Mahdi Nasrullah Al-Ameen Apr 2025

“Synchronized Parenting Is Like Mixing Oil And Water”: Reimagining Parental Control For Co-Parenting In The Divorced Households, Prakriti Dumaru, Audrey Flood, Mahdi Nasrullah Al-Ameen

Computer Science Student Research

Children from divorced households are granted access to devices (e.g., smartphones, tablets), helping them to maintain meaningful contact with both parents. However, regulating their device usage across two households presents unique co-parenting challenges, which are little studied in the existing literature on parental mediation. As we begin to address this gap, we used low-fidelity prototype designs, guided by the principles of fostering open communication and instilling self-regulation. We evaluated those designs (presented in the form of storyboards) through semi-structured interviews with 23 divorced parents, whose children are active Internet users and aged 13 years or below. Based on our analysis, …

Women’s sports are on the rise, as indicated by increased media interest and television viewership records across the professional and collegiate ranks. This trend coincides with one specific to the sports media industry, where more women are pursuing careers in that space – and being recognized for their contributions in ways they have not in previous decades.

My project examines both trends in the form of a podcast, featuring interviews with eight alumni and two current students who have sports media experience and ties to the University of South Carolina’s School of Journalism and Mass Communications. The podcast consists of …

Cybermapping Solutions: A Unified Approach In Us/Nato Military Applications And Development, Nicholas Macrino Apr 2025

Cybermapping Solutions: A Unified Approach In Us/Nato Military Applications And Development, Nicholas Macrino

Electrical & Computer Engineering Projects for D. Eng. Degree

[First paragraph] Cyber threats are evolving in complexity and frequency, posing significant challenges for cybersecurity professionals in identifying, categorizing, and responding to attacks in real time. Unlike traditional warfare, where battlefield awareness is based on fixed geographic warfare, cyber operations involve abstract attack vectors, non-linear threat escalation, and rapidly changing network conditions. Modern cyber threats, such as advanced persistent threats (APTs), polymorphic malware, and distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks, require adaptive visualization techniques that provide real-time awareness and facilitate rapid decision-making. However, existing symbology standards, such as MIL-STD-2525D, were not designed to accommodate the dynamic nature of cyber warfare. The inability …

Society is more connected than ever—yet somehow, we are quietly drifting apart. The constant hum of technology surrounds us, but the simple moments that bring us together are becoming harder to hold onto. As digital interactions replace face-to-face connections, empathy becomes more challenging to show—and even harder to feel. That being said, empathy remains the foundation of emotional understanding and human connection, both vital in a world that often feels emotionally distant, where rising loneliness, heightened anxiety, and emotional disconnection have become widespread. This paper proposes a tabletop game to help parents …

In this multi-platform, comparative study, we analyze social media messages from political candidates (N = 1,517) running for Congress during the 2022 U.S. Midterm election. We collect data from seven social media platforms: Facebook, Twitter, Truth Social, Gettr, Instagram, YouTube, and Rumble over the 4 weeks before and after election day. With this unique dataset of posts, we apply computational methods to identify messages that sought to mobilize individuals (online and offline) to donate money, vote, attend events, engage with the campaign online, and visit the campaign’s content on other platforms. We find that Democrats were not on alt-tech platforms …

Quality Review Of Computer Digital Media Art Design Using Neutrosophic Logic: A Case Study, Gao Huijuan, Fu Licheng

Neutrosophic Sets and Systems

Evaluating the quality of Computer Digital Media Art Design is complex because it involves both subjective artistic elements and objective technical criteria. This study uses the multi-criteria decision making (MCDM) method to deal with different criteria. Two MCDM methods are used in this study such as Preference Selection Index (PSI) Method to compute the criteria weights and the RATGOS method to rank the alternatives. These methods are used neutrosophic sets to dela with vague and uncertainty information. Eight criteria and seven alternatives are used to select the best alternatives. Four experts have evaluated these criteria and alternatives. An example is …

For The Birds, Charlotte L. Middleton Apr 2025

For The Birds, Charlotte L. Middleton

School of Art, Art History, and Design: Theses and Student Creative Work

For the Birds is a homogenous material exhibition of porcelain pottery that explores the relationships between, expectations of, and roles placed upon women and pottery. Using traditional craft processes, still life imagery, and the language and limits of porcelain, I create arrangements that expose the viewers assumptions of both subjects. Pottery- pitchers, cups, and vases—is a product of anthropocentrism and anthropomorphism and can be entirely taken for granted- their role is assumed and unquestionable—to serve. The language and expectations of these objects are the medium I build with.

The title of the show, For the Birds, is both a …

A Comprehensive Framework For Assessing The Impact Of Heritage Areas Renewal Projects On Visibility And Pedestrian Movement, Wesam Abou El-Haggag Mehanna, Walaa Abou El-Haggag Mehanna

Journal of Engineering Research

Urban heritage reflects the cultural and historical significance inherent in cities. Heritage environments are pivotal attractions, distinguished by their landscapes, buildings, meanings, and patterns that illustrate the historical and cultural context. The conservation and development of cultural heritage constitutes a primary focus of urban renewal policies, with protecting both their buildings and heritage spaces being a critical trend in urban settings. This represents considerable challenge for planners and designers, as it is essential to ensure that renewal and development activities do not detract from the visual identity of the locality and its heritage district. Unplanned renewal operations may expose these …

Peace Engagement And Non-Negotiable Commitment Through An In-Depth Lens (P.E.N.C.I.L) Theory: A Film Perspective On Un’S Conflict Resolution, Edward Moses Sam Selvaraj Mar 2025

Peace Engagement And Non-Negotiable Commitment Through An In-Depth Lens (P.E.N.C.I.L) Theory: A Film Perspective On Un’S Conflict Resolution, Edward Moses Sam Selvaraj

Graduate Research Conference (GSIS)

This paper introduces the P.E.N.C.I.L. Theory—Peace Engagement and Non-negotiable Commitment through an In-depth Lens—as a metaphorical and analytical framework for understanding the United Nations Security Council’s role in conflict resolution. Using the symbolic structure of a pencil, the theory critiques the Council’s decision-making power ("the lead") and its human consequences ("the eraser"), highlighting how failures in peacekeeping and diplomacy disproportionately affect civilian populations. Drawing on constructivist theory, the paper argues that norms and social narratives, especially those shaped by cinema, are critical in holding international institutions accountable. Through close analysis of films such as Hotel Rwanda, Sometimes in April, and …

Deaf Culture Matters: The Perceived Implementation Of Culturally Responsive Teaching Practices In Public Deaf Education, Stephanie Elpenord-Senatus Mar 2025

Deaf Culture Matters: The Perceived Implementation Of Culturally Responsive Teaching Practices In Public Deaf Education, Stephanie Elpenord-Senatus

Graduate Theses & Dissertations

Over the last five decades, the number of Deaf and hard-of-hearing (DHH) students enrolled in public schools has significantly increased, while fewer attend traditional residential schools for the Deaf. Although public schools may provide academic advantages, concerns remain about their capacity to meet the cultural, linguistic, and social-emotional needs of DHH students. Access to Deaf culture is essential for students to develop a healthy Deaf identity, feel a sense of belonging, and participate meaningfully in their education.

While the Culturally Responsive Teaching (CRT) framework has been widely researched, there is limited work examining Deaf culture explicitly through the lens of …

From Farm To Friend: Fostering Compassion Toward Farmed Animals Through Design, Natalie Kosmos Mar 2025

From Farm To Friend: Fostering Compassion Toward Farmed Animals Through Design, Natalie Kosmos

University Honors Theses

This thesis explores how human compassion for farmed animals can be fostered through design. By analyzing the existing language, imagery, and social norms surrounding animal commodification, the research highlights the root of the issue: how humans perceive farmed animals in relation to themselves. Understanding how humans view and think about farmed animals is important for creating a message that disrupts these existing norms. The culmination of this thesis is a campaign, "From Farm to Friend" which is designed to be approachable and informative, encouraging the audience to have compassion for farmed animals and change their perception, from farm--to friend.
