Exploring The Impact Of Big Data And Thick Data On Collaboration Between Design And Business Professionals : A New Approach To Data-Informed Design, Minhwa Lee, Younjoon Lee
Experiential Knowledge (EKSIG) Conference Series
This study investigated how data utilization impacts collaboration between design and business professionals, and whether it ultimately leads to positive outcomes. To achieve this, we defined ‘Data-informed Design’ as a concept for data-integrated collaboration and tested it through a workshop-based empirical study. Eight teams participated, each consisting of four members: two designers and two business professionals with comparable experience and data literacy. In total, there were 32 participants: 16 designers and 16 business professionals. Four teams participated in a Data-Informed Design Workshop, utilizing both Big Data and Thick Data, while the remaining four teams took part in a Non-Data Design …
Tangible Patterns In Material-Based Data Visualizations For The Quantified-Self, Yvette Shen, Deborah Scott
Tangible Patterns In Material-Based Data Visualizations For The Quantified-Self, Yvette Shen, Deborah Scott
Experiential Knowledge (EKSIG) Conference Series
This paper explores the intersection of materiality and data visualization, focusing on how tangible representations balance data precision with emotional engagement. Using a Research through Design (RtD) methodology, the study examines self-tracked data through the Delicious Data experiment, where unconventional materials were used to create tactile, multisensory visualizations. By analyzing iterative experimentation, reflective journaling, and participatory gallery interactions, five critical attributes of material-driven data patterns emerge: multisensory engagement, spatial and temporal dimensions, symbolic and metaphorical qualities, constructive interactivity, and interpretative flexibility. These findings highlight how material properties influence data interpretation, evoke emotional connections, and foster personal reflection. Reframing patterns as …
Migration Narratives As Generative Data Visualization: Iranian Migration Stories, Mahshad Faridfar
Migration Narratives As Generative Data Visualization: Iranian Migration Stories, Mahshad Faridfar
Experiential Knowledge (EKSIG) Conference Series
The Iranian migration context, rich with cultural and socio-political layers, presents a compelling case for generative design, where algorithmic processes and sensory elements create immersive representations. This paper explores the generative design process in visual storytelling, focusing on Iranian migration narratives as a case study. Through projects such as Synesthesia, Typographic Narratives, and CommUnity, this research translates complex qualitative data into interactive, visual experiences. This approach highlights data’s role as experiential knowledge, fostering a deeper public understanding of the emotional and temporal aspects of migration. By embedding culturally specific themes into generative design, this work presents data as a medium …

Decoding Symbolic Influence On Youtube Engagement, Emotion Resonance And Trust In Information Campaigns, Diwash Poudel
Theses and Dissertations
This study examined how symbolic images in YouTube videos influences viewers’ emotions, trust, and engagement with political content online. Approximately 2,000 videos were collected and analyzed, with a focus on both thumbnails and standout frames. The findings revealed that cultural symbols were particularly effective at capturing attention and evoking strong emotional reactions—especially anger and disgust. Notably, these same symbols also enhanced viewer trust, making audiences less susceptible to misinformation. Statistical tests confirmed that these effects were consistent and significant. To ensure the validity of these results, additional analyses were conducted to assess potential biases in YouTube’s recommendation algorithm, as well …
Black Filmmaking As Archival Practice, Caroline Charles
Black Filmmaking As Archival Practice, Caroline Charles
Dissertations - ALL
Black Filmmaking as Archival Practice argues that cinema has offered Black cultural workers a generative space to creatively challenge the constraints of traditional archival repositories. I claim that Black filmmakers participate in a tradition of Black archival practice; they intervene in dominant collections and utilize their materials to create filmic counter-histories that negotiate the archive’s limits and attend to Black humanity, life, and memory. I engage with a diverse constellation of late twentieth and early-twenty-first century films that consider archives of Black social movement, abject images, enslavement and portraiture, Black queer and trans existence, and Black family photography. Through historical …

In the post-pandemic era, this thesis looks into how gamification and augmented reality (AR) can get customers back into physical retail settings. Brick-and-mortar stores have found it difficult to stay relevant as consumer preferences have shifted toward online convenience. Shopping Quest attempts to make in-store grocery shopping an engaging experience. The project started with qualitative surveys using a human-centered design process to determine the main frustrations of shoppers, which were navigation and remembering what to buy. The final idea makes use of a wearable AR interface that directs users with a virtual rocket and promotes exploration with collectible digital petals. …
Adler, Asterios, & Maus, Crystal Ganatra
Adler, Asterios, & Maus, Crystal Ganatra
MFA in Illustration & Visual Culture
Adler, Asterios, & Maus examines how small visual decisions in illustrations make up a language. And when the dialect changes from the predominant one in a graphic novel, something novel happens. A scene or specific quality gets the spotlight. It also explores how these visuals tie to Adlerian psychology and El Refaeian ideas on autobiography, behavior, and emotion. It identifies through two interesting grpahic novels- Asterios Polyp by David Mazzuchelli and Maus by Art Spiegelman- how these ideas can be used to understand ourselves. It intensely zeroes in on specific moments of visual language shift. Some of these change range …
Lines Of Thought: The Cartoon As A Phenomenological Object And A Philosophical Tool, Thomas Attwood
Lines Of Thought: The Cartoon As A Phenomenological Object And A Philosophical Tool, Thomas Attwood
MFA in Illustration & Visual Culture
Cartooning’s greatest strength is its simplicity. This essay argues that the cartoon’s inherent modesty and accessibility are central to its philosophical utility, and that its spare visual language conveys more than meets the eye. Drawing on phenomenology, it considers cartooning as a process grounded in the body, and it investigates the bodily encounter between the viewer and the cartoon. Through an analysis of cartooning work by Saul Steinberg, R.O. Blechman, and Liana Finck - a “family of cartoonists” - it demonstrates how a line-drawn, representational cartooning language can transform the act of looking into a participatory experience that interrogates issues …
America Is Banking On You! Selling American Ideology During World War Ii, David W. Maupin
America Is Banking On You! Selling American Ideology During World War Ii, David W. Maupin
MFA in Illustration & Visual Culture
This essay uncovers advertising from World War II found in tear sheet archives. Through deep reading and contextual analysis, this essay seeks to determine what these advertisements—found in magazines, newspapers, and posters—were asking their viewers to do in response to the global conflict of the 1940s. It argues that advertisers used emotions and racism to entice citizens of specific classes to invest, enlist, and align their values with American ideals. The creators of these advertisements were hired by American companies, who used government sponsored tactics to woo citizens to the American Ideology while keeping the corporate brand in the public …

Beyond Barcodes, Ritul Chaudhary
Beyond Barcodes, Ritul Chaudhary
Theses
Beyond Barcodes is a conceptual zine that investigates the narratives encoded within barcodes and reinterprets receipts as tools to examine the emotional layers of consumer behavior. Often dismissed as transactional byproducts, receipts in this project are reframed as carriers of memory, identity and self-worth—reflecting personal values shaped by frugality, guilt, and inherited beliefs about money. The zine unfolds through a series of illustrated vignettes, each centered around a category of spending: groceries, essentials, dining, vanity, and experiences. This arc traces a journey from survival to indulgence, ending on a bittersweet note—critiquing how consumer culture quietly shapes how we spend, what …
Access To Justice For Deaf Defendants, Anna Zieba
Access To Justice For Deaf Defendants, Anna Zieba
Theses
Deaf individuals face systemic accessibility within the criminal justice system, which emphasizes the importance of the gaps in accommodations by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Inconsistent legal protection, limited access to interpreters, inadequate training for legal professionals, and a lack of technology resources obstruct effective communication for Deaf individuals. As a result, it prohibits achieving an effective and equitable legal outcome. This research paper will examine case studies, legal frameworks, and academic literature to highlight the critical need for reform, including mandatory Deaf culture training, standardized interpreting qualifications, and more resources to enable equitable access to justice.

Waylight: Mapping The Journey Of Faith, Emma Woerle
Theses
Waylight is a digital learning platform that reimagines how we explore the life of Jesus through maps, movement, and meaningful interaction. Designed to bridge the gap between static Bible study tools and the physical settings of Scripture, the platform allows users to follow curated journeys such as Miracles or Timelines across ancient Israel. The project began with experimental designs using three-dimensional terrain and literal religious symbols. These early versions lacked cohesion and felt visually heavy. As the work progressed, the design shifted toward a more refined two-dimensional aesthetic inspired by textures like layered paper and the craft of carpentry. This …

Geraldo De Barros’S Fotoformas: Towards The Construction Of New Forms Of Legibility, Jay Bravo
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis examines the legibility and reception of Geraldo de Barros’s Fotoformas within Western art institutions, using MoMA’s 2021 Fotoclubismo exhibition as a case study. It argues that the integration of Brazilian modernist photography into canonical narratives often hinges on strategic affinities with Euro-American frameworks. Drawing on institutional critique, postcolonial theory, and the concept of Anthropophagy, the study explores how Fotoformas challenges conventional photographic discourse and reveals broader dynamics of artistic legitimacy and representation.

Looking Green: A Rhetorical Analysis Of Greenwashing In Fossil Fuel Advertisements, Elizabeth Schohn Hein
Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection
The world’s leading oil and gas companies knew the impact of fossil fuels on climate change as early as the late 1970s. Despite this knowledge, the fossil fuel industry proceeded to invest money in publicly denying the link between burning fossil fuels and climate change. There is increasing hindrance by American consumers towards fossil fuels as the consequences of their extraction and production become more glaring and evident in the environmental destruction and consequences of climate change across the globe. Growing environmental concerns about the impacts of fossil fuels, like oil and natural gas, from the general public resulted in …

Exploring Mimicry And Visual Communication In Woodpeckers: A Field Study Utilizing 3d-Printed Models, Lauren M. Smith
Exploring Mimicry And Visual Communication In Woodpeckers: A Field Study Utilizing 3d-Printed Models, Lauren M. Smith
Biology Theses
The evolution of similar phenotypes poses an interesting challenge in evolutionary biology. While divergent ecologies may drive differing morphology, physiology, or behavior, similar phenotypes are often due to similar ecology or selection for mimicry. One prominent case of mimetic phenotypes is found in hairy and downy woodpeckers. While several hypotheses might explain the hairy-downy mimicry complex, I aimed to assess the idea that downy woodpeckers benefit from resembling hairy woodpeckers. To test this hypothesis, I used 3D-printed models of various woodpecker species in the field. These models were painted with colors that resemble woodpecker species. The experimental conditions were 3D …

Presence Through Absence: The Ark Of The Covenant And The Aniconic Image Of God In Early Israelite Religious Art, Natalie Rivas
Presence Through Absence: The Ark Of The Covenant And The Aniconic Image Of God In Early Israelite Religious Art, Natalie Rivas
Theses
This thesis investigates the Ark of the Covenant as a paradoxical visual and theological artifact within early Israelite religious art. While the Israelite tradition has long been characterized as aniconic (eschewing anthropomorphic representations of the divine) the Ark occupied a central role in ritual, worship, and religious identity. Prior scholarship has focused either on the Ark’s narrative function in biblical texts or its formal attributes as a cultic object. However, limited attention has been given to how the Ark embodies divine presence through the visual strategy of absence. This study argues that the Ark does not merely avoid figural representation …
