Poststroke Seizure And Epilepsy: A Review Of Incidence, Risk Factors, Diagnosis, Pathophysiology, And Pharmacological Therapies, Joseph Phan, Mario Ramos, Theodore Soares, Mayur S. Parmar
HPD Articles
Stroke is the most common cause of epilepsy and ultimately leads to a decrease in the quality of life of those affected. Ischemic and hemorrhagic strokes can both lead to poststroke epilepsy (PSE). Significant risk factors for PSE include age less than 65 years, stroke severity measured by the National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS), cortical involvement, and genetic factors such as TRPM6 polymorphism. The diagnosis of PSE is made by using imaging modalities, blood biomarkers, and prognostic criteria. Electroencephalography (EEG) is currently the gold standard to diagnose PSE, while new combinations of modalities are being tested to increase …
Visualizing The Operative And Managing Complexity: Communicating The Design-Fabrication Feedback Loop With The International Tile Industry, Josh Vermillion
Visualizing The Operative And Managing Complexity: Communicating The Design-Fabrication Feedback Loop With The International Tile Industry, Josh Vermillion
Creative Collaborations
School of Architecture faculty members Joshua Vermillion and Paul Morrison led a multi-disciplinary group of students from Architecture, Landscape Architecture, and Theater in a design-build elective, sponsored entirely by companies in the tile and coverings industry. The key to these sorts of collaborations between industry and academe is to see the production, fabrication, and assembly process as something that can inform design, and as a result, the design can augment production by strategic design decision-making. This feedback loop, connecting both ends of the design-production continuum, can yield interesting design research questions. One such question arose repeatedly throughout this semester of …

‘Meet New Vcd’ Immersive Art Gallery, Wenting Toby Xue
Theses
Students of the Visual Communication Design (VCD) program may have a relatively distressing question about how to explain some details of this program to others. Someone will always ask how to define and explain the VCD. Therefore, in the spirit of redefining the VCD program and creating a platform to more intuitively demonstrate the current success of VCD students in visual design. The curriculum of this program and related student works are mainly user-centered design as the primary starting point. Innovation and forward-looking are necessary. To better communicate the VCD project and expand its influence. According to the questionnaire and …

Echoing Ecopoetics: Fantasy Literature's Background Sounds, Catherine Olver
Echoing Ecopoetics: Fantasy Literature's Background Sounds, Catherine Olver
Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature
Despite David Abram’s fear that reading disrupts people’s “attunement to environing nature,” fantasy literature can vibrantly convey how to hear our environments as it describes characters attuning their ears to particular places. Garth Nix’s Old Kingdom series (1995-2021) and Patrick Ness’s Chaos Walking trilogy (2008-10) develop an echoing ecopoetics of place through both world-building and style. Their fantasy worlds emphasize that characters must relearn to listen in unfamiliar environments: adjusting their expectations and interpretations of background sounds, recognising significant silences, adapting to new ways of communicating, and seeking meaning in nonhuman sounds rather than dismissing them as noise. Their stylistic …

How Hearing Parents With Deaf Or Hard Of Hearing Children Construct Deafness Through Their Early Intervention Experience, Bettie T. Petersen
Language, Literacy, and Sociocultural Studies ETDs
This dissertation explores how hearing parents with deaf/hard of hearing children come to understand deafness. This mixed methods study used an online survey and multiple case studies (volunteers from survey). Participants were asked about early intervention experiences and beliefs about deafness. The survey had 74 respondents and five families participated in the interviews. Survey participants’ beliefs about deafness were primarily medical, focusing on the perceived barriers caused by deafness and the remediation of those barriers through spoken language options. Virtual Lab: A New Dimention To Online Mediation, Giuseppe Leone Mediator
International Journal on Consumer Law and Practice
For any mediator used to face-to-face mediation, online mediation requires a modified approach and therefore training to adapt the skills of the mediator to be compatible with an incorporeal digital forum. Aside from the development of the skills needed to conduct online mediation, the Virtual Mediation Lab (VML) simulations also provide the ability to learn from experience before taking a real online case.1 Therefore, Virtual Mediation is not something that might happen or might be useful rather it is the extremity of future.

A Test Of Predator Avoidance By Larvae Of The Blue Ridge Two-Lined Salamander (Eurycea Wilderae) In Appalachian Streams, Taylor Hopkins, Emmeline Lombard, Carlos D. Camp
Georgia Journal of Science
Larval Blue Ridge Two-lined Salamanders (Eurycea wilderae) are significant components of Appalachian streams, reaching densities up to 100/m2. Not surprisingly, these salamanders fall prey to many types of predator. In order to test the hypothesis that larval E. wilderae actively avoid predators, we paired them against a variety of predators of this species. Predators included Banded Sculpins (Cottus carolinae), Chattahoochee Crayfish (Cambarus howardi), and Spring Salamanders (Gyrinophilus porphyriticus), both adult and larval. We placed larvae in a 1-m metal trough filled with water with a predator placed in a cage …

A Case Study Exploring Effective Pedagogical Practices In Teaching Art And Design Hearing-Impaired Students In Bahrain, S. Al Hashimi
Information Sciences Letters
Although the education of hearing-impaired students has significantly progressed towards achieving quality education in many countries, it is not yet clear in Bahrain how their education should be managed. There is a scarcity of research about the way that art and design can effectively be taught to the deaf. Moreover, there seems to be a misconception that art and design can be easily taught to people with hearing impairments. However, there may be challenges that could prove this assumption to be incorrect. Therefore, this paper attempts to examine the challenges faced by hearing-impaired students and to recommend how best educators …
