Visual Supports And Autism, Donna L Macoskey Jan 2023

Visual Supports And Autism, Donna L Macoskey

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a complex developmental condition that involves persistent challenges in social interaction, speech and nonverbal communication, and restricted/repetitive behaviors. Children on the Autism Spectrum thrive on routine, visuals, and calm learning environments. Visual supports are effective tools for students who need additional support to understand and communicate. Visual supports are easily accessible, adapted to skill level, and tailored to specific interests and activities. In this literature review with application, I will explore different types of visual supports and describe situations in which visual supports are used effectively. I will go in-depth about the different types of …

See That In A Small Town: Visual Rhetoric, Race, And Legal History In Tennessee, Becky L. Jacobs Jan 2023

See That In A Small Town: Visual Rhetoric, Race, And Legal History In Tennessee, Becky L. Jacobs

Scholarly Works

When it comes to racism and the law, visual rhetoric has played and still plays an outsized role. Jason Aldean’s music video for “Try That in a Small Town” aptly illustrates this thesis. The video shows Aldean and his band performing in front of the Maury County Courthouse in Columbia, Tennessee, the same location where, in 1918, a white mob violently lynched a young Black man. To some (white) viewers, the Maury County Courthouse might symbolize justice. In combination with the song’s lyrics, however, the courthouse conjures up visuals of the lynching that occurred outside its doors, reminding viewers that …

El Análisis Semiótico De Las Pinturas Rupestres Prehispánicas Del Alto Nepeña, Perú / Semiotic Analysis Of The Pre-Hispanic Rock Paintings Of The Upper Nepeña, Peru, Carmen Pérez Maestro Jan 2023

El Análisis Semiótico De Las Pinturas Rupestres Prehispánicas Del Alto Nepeña, Perú / Semiotic Analysis Of The Pre-Hispanic Rock Paintings Of The Upper Nepeña, Peru, Carmen Pérez Maestro

Segundo congreso internacional de iconografía precolombina. Barcelona, 2023. Actas.

Using Emojis To Transform Messages: Manipulating Visual Rhetoric To Achieve Compliance, Deya Roy, Joy Daggs, John Katsion Jan 2023

Using Emojis To Transform Messages: Manipulating Visual Rhetoric To Achieve Compliance, Deya Roy, Joy Daggs, John Katsion

Iowa Journal of Communication

Emojis are commonplace in mediated communication and function as substitutes for non-verbal behavior, emotions, concepts, and ideas. Previous research indicates that emojis serve as a visual element that draws attention to a message (Willoughby & Lui, 2018) and they can impact emotional responses toward the sender and the message (Das et al., 2019; Gesselman et al, 2019; Luangrath et al., 2017). This study examines emojis as visual rhetorical devices and the effect these visual communication elements have on a receiver’s emotional response to a message. The findings indicate that visual artifacts (emojis like cake, pizza, a clock, etc.) serve a …

An Exploratory Constructivist Grounded Theory Study: How Secondary School Science Teachers Interpret Students’ Scientific Models That Are Comprised Of Drawing Activities, Alecia M. Redway

Selected Full Text Dissertations, 2011-

Extant literature lacks an explanation of the thought processes used by secondary school science teachers to interpret students’ scientific models that are comprised of drawing activities. In this exploratory study, a constructivist grounded theory (CGT) was developed to generate an interpretive understanding. The CGT was generated from observations, interviews, and document analyses of five research participants consisting of secondary school science teachers from lower New York State. To generate a CGT, concepts, terms, assumptions, and definitions from selected theories—decolonizing methodologies theory (DMT), visual semiotic theory (VST), and cultural studies theory (CST)—collectively provided a fresh onto-epistemological lens for initially examining and …

Wellbeing In Human-Dog Dyads: An Analysis Of Attachment And Communication, Katherine Abbott Jan 2023

Wellbeing In Human-Dog Dyads: An Analysis Of Attachment And Communication, Katherine Abbott

Theses & ETDs

People love their dogs, and past studies have clearly shown that dogs are attached to their caregivers (Palmer, 2008; Schöberl et al., 2016; Topál et al.;1998; 2005). However previous studies have also indicated that people are often poor at recognizing their dog’s body language cues (Demiurbas et al., 2016; Tami & Gallagher, 2009), thereby potentially negatively affecting their relationships with their dogs. Here we investigated the relationship of dog/human dyads by analyzing each dog’s attachment to their caretaker, and each caretaker’s ability to read their dog’s body language. To measure each dog’s attachment to their caregiver, dog/human dyads engaged in …

Effective Strategies For Using Telecommuting By Owners Of Small Businesses, Thomas Law Jan 2023

Effective Strategies For Using Telecommuting By Owners Of Small Businesses, Thomas Law

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Small business owners who lack effective strategies to incorporate telecommuting may be unable to retain teleworking employees, create a flexible working environment, or improve workforce morale, negatively impacting company productivity and profitability. Grounded in transformational leadership theory and sociotechnical systems theory, the purpose of this qualitative multiple case study was to explore strategies small business owners use to incorporate telecommuting to retain teleworking employees. Data were collected from five small business owners in Texas with at least 1 year of management experience and created and maintained remote working strategies. Data collection included semistructured interviews and company documents. Three themes emerged …

Quality Improvement Initiatives And Interventions For Decreasing Falls In The Hospital Setting, Fredlyn Lolange Jan 2023

Quality Improvement Initiatives And Interventions For Decreasing Falls In The Hospital Setting, Fredlyn Lolange

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Patient falls in health care settings are a widespread and severe problem, and they often happen as a result of a complex set of causes. In the United States, between 3.3 and 11.5 falls occur per 1,000 patient days. Reducing the incidence of falls in a health care setting would bring significant positive change and decrease the incidence of harm to patients in the hospital setting. This staff education project’s purpose is based on addressing falls, a safety concern and a health issue that continues to put patients at an increased risk. Theories used to inform the project include the …

A Puerto Rican Diasporic Study In Central Florida, Chelsea Vélez Jan 2023

A Puerto Rican Diasporic Study In Central Florida, Chelsea Vélez

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

This study seeks to explicate the intercultural experiences of Puerto Ricans within the diaspora of Central Florida. Specifically, the navigation of communication behaviors among intergroup and outgroup behaviors as Puerto Rican individuals acculturate into the area. This study utilizes communication accommodation theory as its basis to understand integration into a host culture and the impacts on socio-cultural communication behaviors. Findings show the importance of studying diasporic communities as they develop such as that of the Puerto Rican community in Central Florida because it situates the reality of an individual and groups sense of identity in a new cultural context. This …

Soft System Methodology Applied To Stakeholder Engagement In Social Services Nonprofit Organizations, Robyn Chin Jan 2023

Soft System Methodology Applied To Stakeholder Engagement In Social Services Nonprofit Organizations, Robyn Chin

Full-Text Theses & Dissertations

This dissertation explored the challenges of a Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI), a non-profit social service organization, and the value of employing a systems thinking approach to problem formulation and problem-solving to address its challenges. Soft Systems Methodology (SSM), a systems-informed framework, encourages collective learning and fosters an appreciation for differing perspectives about problem formulation amongst stakeholders instead of rushing to solve predefined issues. One common challenge from current research is that due to reliance on sparse profits and grants earmarked for programmatic endeavors, there is insufficient funding for organizational development. The literature also identified a deficit in stakeholder engagement …

English Faculty Books and Book Chapters

"In the English Department at Chapman, all graduate students are eligible to apply for positions as GTAs after they have completed a graduate seminar in teaching composition. Those who are offered and accept GTA positions take a second graduate seminar, composition pedagogy and research practicum, simultaneously with their first semester of teaching. In order to encourage GTAs to develop identities as teacher-scholars, GTAs develop IRB-approved action research projects (Buyserie; Hawkes; Hudson et al.; Souleles) as their major work in this second seminar. These action research projects allow GTAs to research a question they have about the teaching of composition, using …

Talent & Tagging In Harmony : A Study Of Graffiti Art As Subculture And Aesthetic Expression Of Urbanization In Malaysia, Stephen T. F. Poon

Journal of Urban Culture Research

The purpose of this paper is to discuss contemporary perspectives of street art by examining its influence on urban society and culture. Its research aims to understand social perceptions and awareness towards graffiti art, and how graffiti artists develop a youth subculture through building relationships between street art and the targeted audiences for graffiti. Primary research included interviews with Malaysian graffiti artists. Findings suggest that graffiti art in Malaysia is increasingly accepted as modern representation of cultural idealism through appropriation of local inspirational elements. However, the legitimacy of graffiti art in urban beautification projects is still an unsettled debate, unless …
