Response To The Promise Of The Foreign, Roland Tolentino
Kritika Kultura
In his “Response to The Promise of the Foreign,” Roland Tolentino generates a battery of provocative questions that seeks to resituate Rafael’s trope of “the foreign,” particularly in the field of Philippine Studies. Here, Tolentino asks nine questions that open up “the foreign” into zones of contacts with other contexts: the foreign in relation to the linguistic context of the period; its relationship with the vernacular, particularly in the case of the recodification of the baybayin; its involvement with act of writing and rewriting; its viability as a social project and its political efficacy; the foreign and its relation to …

Subcutaneous Electroencephalography Monitoring For People With Epilepsy And Intellectual Disability: Co-Production Workshops, Rohit Shankar
Subcutaneous Electroencephalography Monitoring For People With Epilepsy And Intellectual Disability: Co-Production Workshops, Rohit Shankar
Peninsula Medical School
Background Nearly 25% of people with intellectual disability (PwID) have epilepsy compared to 1% of the UK general population. PwID are commonly excluded from research, eventually affecting their care. Understanding seizures in PwID is particularly challenging because of reliance on subjective external observation and poor objective validation. Remote electroencephalography (EEG) monitoring could capture objective data, but particular challenges and implementation strategies for this population need to be understood. Aim This co-production aimed to explore the accessibility and potential impact of a remote, long-term EEG tool (UnEEG 24/7 SubQ) for PwID and epilepsy. Method We conducted six, 2-hour long workshops; three …

Designing An Interactive System For Early Social Learning: Leveraging Emotion Recognition And Real-Time Feedback To Foster Early Childhood Emotional Mirroring And Social Skill Development, Yue Gu
Theses
For young children, traditional educational methods often rely too heavily on the caregiver's own time and energy as well as social attributes. There is currently no product on the market that mirrors emotions and provides real-time feedback on personality drawings that can simultaneously stimulate young children's recognition of facial emotions, understand and mimic expressions, and promote their social development. The purpose of this thesis is to design an interactive system to enhance early social learning in young children through emotion recognition and real-time feedback. The system utilizes a digital device's camera for emotion detection to detect children's facial expressions. It …

Promotional Product Brand Message Effectiveness: A Study Of Brand Awareness Using The Nudge Theory, Seth Barnett
JWU Dissertations & Theses
This dissertation explored the efficacy of promotional products as marketing nudges for new market entrants. It employs Nudge Theory, a measure used to induce behavioral changes (Thaler & Sunstein, 2021), to analyze their influence on human behavior and decision-making. Through voluntary surveys, participants' brand awareness was assessed, examining changes in branding awareness and general brand perception by using promotional products as a catalyst.
Promotional products are tangible items imprinted with a company's logo or message and distributed to consumers to enhance brand awareness and foster emotional connections (Pennington, 2002). Often given at no cost, these items are constantly reminded of …
Beyond Color: Design Approaches For Conveying Mood And Music Genre In Album Covers For Color Blind Accessibility, Victoria Erdmann
Beyond Color: Design Approaches For Conveying Mood And Music Genre In Album Covers For Color Blind Accessibility, Victoria Erdmann
Senior Honors Theses
In the music industry, album cover design serves as a pivotal visual medium that not only acts as a marketing tool but can also shape a listener’s perception of the music. Designing album covers that are accessible to color blind individuals presents a unique challenge in an industry where color plays a significant role in design choices. This thesis examines how color vision deficiency impacts the perception of album art and defines four approaches that designers can take to ensure inclusive visual communication. By analyzing how contrast, typography, texture, and imagery can effectively convey genre and mood, designers can create …

Using Legitimation Code Theory (Lct) To Define And Track The Practice Of The Scholarship Of Teaching And Learning, Mark Brooke, Daron Loo, Chloe Wong
International Journal of Teaching and Learning in Higher Education
In this article, we demonstrate how Legitimation Code Theory (LCT) can be enacted to explore the nature of Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) in higher education. Specialization and semantics from LCT are applied to define SoTL practice and map cumulative knowledge building processes. As members of the Faculty Development Committee (FDC), we enact LCT tools to conceptualize our professional development. We provide SoTL narratives as well as vignettes depicting how LCT led to positive transformative learning. The article concludes that LCT tools, with their explanatory power, can be utilized to form highly effective components of a faculty development program.

Generative Artificial Intelligence (GAI) is revolutionizing education, echoing historic shifts such as the emergence of the codex and the printing press. GAI automates complex tasks and personalizes learning to individual needs, enhancing interdisciplinary collaboration and bolstering critical thinking and ethical reasoning skills. Initiatives in new, innovative programming illustrate the benefits of embedding these generative technologies to foster cultural competence and innovative problem-solving. Research indicates that intelligent tools significantly enhance learner engagement and access to quality education, enriching learning environments. However, integrating these tools introduces challenges, including ethical dilemmas, academic integrity issues, and resource disparities. These challenges necessitate comprehensive policy development, …

The Mythical Nexus: Illuminating The Rich Tapestry Of Global Folklore, Trishala Parmar
Theses
There is a lack of accessibility and exposure to global folklore for a wider audience. Despite the richness and diversity of folktales worldwide, many people may not have access to them due to limited resources, language barriers, cultural isolation, and a lack of exposure. I saw a need to preserve and celebrate cultural heritage through stories and make it fun. I created an interactive website called The Mythical Nexus which allows an audience to interact with different stories and cultures through a series of rotating cubes. This website connects stories and folklore from around the globe through the power of …
