Five Questions For The Future, Ethan Seltzer, Sheila A. Martin Jan 2007

Five Questions For The Future, Ethan Seltzer, Sheila A. Martin

Institute of Metropolitan Studies Publications

We suspect that every generation views its times and challenges as tougher and more challenging than any preceding time. Sometimes the issue is money, others it’s that elusive sense of leadership, or even “the vision thing.” Nonetheless, it’s less about what times used to be like that matters, and more about what we’ll do with the hand we’ve been dealt. Fundamentally, it’s about the future. As we reviewed the materials now in your hands, we identified a number of issues, five to be precise, that will distinguish or diminish the prospects for this region in the future. Certainly, other readers …

The Shaping Of Things Now: Questions Of Emerging Churches, Darren Cronshaw Jan 2007

The Shaping Of Things Now: Questions Of Emerging Churches, Darren Cronshaw

Journal of the American Society for Church Growth

The term ‘emerging church’ has been hotly debated. Some mainstream churches say ‘what are you doing that we are not?’ and some emerging churches resent the implication that they are still ‘emerging’ into being a real church. 3 But ‘emerging’ describes something that is changing and evolving rather than fixed in one place. The label recognizes that such churches are emerging from a modern into a postmodern framework, in a post-Christendom era, in a digital age, for a post-colonial era. Interestingly, it is a term that has been used to describe the early church in the first century, since that …

(Re)Building Cultural, Community, And Academic Identity: Freshman Composition After Katrina, Russo Celeste Del Dec 2006

(Re)Building Cultural, Community, And Academic Identity: Freshman Composition After Katrina, Russo Celeste Del

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Composition studies has become increasingly focused on the connection between place, identity, and the act of writing, maintaining, as theorist Nedra Reynolds states, that “where writing instruction takes place has everything to do with how” (20). Considering the social, political, and cultural contexts of a post-Katrina Southeastern Louisiana, administrators and instructors at the University of New Orleans must begin to question how our freshmen writing program can best serve our students as they enter into the future of a "new" New Orleans. Implementing a "localized pedagogy" into the freshmen composition classroom--that is, a community-based pedagogy that draws from local resources, …

Preparing The Way For Reform In Higher Education: Drawing Upon The Resources Of The Community-At-Large, Judith A. Ramaley Jan 2005

Preparing The Way For Reform In Higher Education: Drawing Upon The Resources Of The Community-At-Large, Judith A. Ramaley

Public Administration Faculty Publications and Presentations

Higher education is being asked to pay more attention to student learning and to contribute to the enhancement of the social and economic conditions of the community it serves. As a result, educational institutions will no longer be self-contained. Community members and organizations have become not only critical partners in framing the goals and intentions of the educational reform movement, but they also have assets that must be tapped by educational institutions that wish to implement change and respond to social needs.

A Critique Of The Urban Mission Of The Church In The Light Of An Emerging Postmodern Condition, Kleber De Oliveira Goncalves Jan 2005

A Critique Of The Urban Mission Of The Church In The Light Of An Emerging Postmodern Condition, Kleber De Oliveira Goncalves

Dissertations

The world is becoming an urban society. The urban expansion witnessed during the twentieth century and continuing into the twenty-first century is unprecedented in the history of the human civilization. Simultaneously, the Western world faces the paradigm shift from the modern era to a postmodern condition. Both movements have remarkable implications for the mission of the church in urbanized, postmodernizing societies. Shaped by the modern worldview, the church is now further ostracized by the postmodern condition.

While the literature of urban mission has grown in the past few years, very little consideration has been given to the particular issues and …
