“Globes" Module (Guiding Learners Towards One Health, Biodiversity, And Environmental Stewardship): Catalyzing Synergies To Advance Leadership And Scholarly Engagement With One Health In Under Graduate Medical Education, Krishna Mohan Surapaneni

Health Professions Education

Background: The concept of One Health addresses the interconnected health of humans, animals, and the environment, offering a critical framework for tackling complex health challenges. However, gaps in the integration of One Health principles into medical education limit the ability of future healthcare providers to operationalize this knowledge in practice. The "GLOBES" module (Guiding Learners towards One health, Biodiversity, and Environmental Stewardship) was designed to bridge these gaps, aligning with Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 3, 13, 14, 15) to promote holistic and interdisciplinary healthcare education. Methods: The "GLOBES" module was developed with 22 competencies across ten categories, incorporating case-based learning, …

Breathing A New Life Into Industrialized Cities: Adapting Warehouses In The Inland Empire, Mazzy Rosenast Jan 2025

Breathing A New Life Into Industrialized Cities: Adapting Warehouses In The Inland Empire, Mazzy Rosenast

Pitzer Senior Theses

This thesis explores adaptive reuse as a design strategy to repurpose aging warehouse infrastructure in the Inland Empire, specifically Rancho Cucamonga, in order to reclaim and reintegrate the urban fabric around community needs, rather than defaulting to demolition and erasure. As urban spaces become increasingly saturated, resources dwindle, and environmental concerns escalate, the need to creatively build and repurpose our urban fabric becomes a critical conversation among architects, urban planners, and designers. The Inland Empire (IE) - comprising Riverside and San Bernardino Counties - has been overtaken by the logistics industry, transforming its landscape into a patchwork of freeways, cargo …

Wellbeing Against The Odds: Confronting Obstacles To Collective Wellbeing In Greater Los Angeles, Ethan H. Yao Jan 2025

Wellbeing Against The Odds: Confronting Obstacles To Collective Wellbeing In Greater Los Angeles, Ethan H. Yao

Pitzer Senior Theses

Governments and organizations at the national, regional, and city levels are increasingly adopting wellbeing measurements and objectives to redefine progress. However, despite the inspiring successes of some wellbeing-based governance efforts worldwide, emerging initiatives face significant barriers and challenges, especially in the United States. This research employs a case study approach to examine the obstacles that have faced three collective wellbeing projects in the Greater Los Angeles region: the Pomona Valley Wellbeing Project, the Santa Monica Wellbeing Project, and the LA Regional Wellbeing Summit. Through a multi-methods qualitative approach (archival research and semi-structured interviews), this thesis finds that institutional fragmentation, limited …

How Theories Of Art Can Inform Debates About Ai, Jessica Silbey Jan 2025

How Theories Of Art Can Inform Debates About Ai, Jessica Silbey

Emory Law Journal

Debates about artificial intelligence (AI) tend to swing between the optimistic and the apocalyptic. I propose a less binary approach that frames conversations about AI from the perspectives of theories of art and creativity. Whether we agree that AI is artificial or intelligent, whether it should be constrained or liberated, we cannot deny its influence on literary, artistic, and innovative production. AI may be described as simply a new tool to produce art and science, like the camera or the microscope, or it may transform and reshape art and science, the way the internet transformed global communication. Either way, these …

Building A Culture Of Preparedness: Using Community Emergency Response Teams To Promote Preparedness Behavior, Joseph Faulk Jan 2025

Building A Culture Of Preparedness: Using Community Emergency Response Teams To Promote Preparedness Behavior, Joseph Faulk

Theses and Dissertations

Communities throughout the nation use the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) program to supplement the disaster response after hazard events as well as help build a culture of preparedness. Currently, practitioners and academics have limited knowledge about how CERTs promote enhanced preparedness postures. To address that knowledge gap, 20 CERT program managers were interviewed in this study to improve the general understanding of how CERTs contribute to developing a preparedness culture. The results identify program activities, objectives, and measures. In addition, this study introduces the Preparedness Behavior Change Model and collects feedback on its usefulness, which suggests it has a …

How Socially Comparing Emerging Research Institutions To Established Research Institutions Informs Proposed Amendments To The Bayh Dole Act, Clovia Hamilton

Marquette Intellectual Property & Innovation Law Review

Emerging research institutions have a problem with their lack of tech transfer, including start-up business formations. This study investigates that issue using social comparison theory as the framework for a novel experimental design. A group of 245 respondents, comprised of STEM faculty members and STEM administrators at emerging research institutions, completed a stated- choice survey based on the social comparison theory. The respondents were assessed on the level and extent that they compare their emerging research institution to well established research institutions with respect to research, technology commercialization, and academic entrepreneurship. Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) in America were …

Ontology-Based Data Organization For The Enslaved.Org Project, Cogan Shimizu, Pascal Hitzler

Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications

The men, women, and children forced into slavery in the Atlantic world came from diverse African societies with long histories of political, economic, and cultural development. They were taken from the trading centers of the Hausa city-states, the farming and artisanal communities of Senegambia, the Kongo and Mbundu polities of West Central Africa, and many other regions. They carried with them agricultural expertise, metallurgical skills, medical knowledge, religious traditions, and oral histories that helped sustain communities in the face of displacement and enslavement.Enslavement did not erase this intellectual and cultural inheritance, nor did it render its victims passive numbers in …

Bridging The Green Divide: Sustainable Community Development And Climate Resilience In Altadena, Ca, Katie Brosnan Jan 2025

Bridging The Green Divide: Sustainable Community Development And Climate Resilience In Altadena, Ca, Katie Brosnan

Pitzer Senior Theses

Sustainable Community Development (SCD) is widely debated as a climate mitigation strategy, with recognized benefits such as reducing carbon footprints, enhancing public health, and fostering economic resilience. However, a major critique is its limited accessibility to marginalized communities. In particular, the resilience embedded in rebuilding plans does not necessarily translate to real access for those whose insurance coverage may not be sufficient to afford conventional design services or reconstruction costs. This thesis argues that while SCD is an effective tool for climate mitigation, its success depends on equitable access—not just in principle, but in the material capacity to participate in …

Coffee Shops And Community, Julia A. Franz Jan 2025

Coffee Shops And Community, Julia A. Franz

Emerging Writers

This paper focuses on the role of coffeehouses as community hubs through a comparative analysis of two locations of a locally owned coffee company in Georgia. It examines how the physical design and values of each shop offer unique forms of social interaction. The St. Simons location encourages spontaneous, intergenerational conversations; while, the Brunswick shop strengthens pre-existing community ties among working families and retirees. The profile explains how, by incorporating local history, sustainable sourcing, and communal spaces, the coffee company shows how design and principles shape social dynamics. This profile highlights how coffeehouses can serve as more than commercial spaces …

Preservation At A Price: Nuanced Environmental Policy And The Loss Of Working Landscapes In Point Reyes National Seashore, Carlyn R. Cunningham

Scripps Senior Theses

In January 2025, the National Park Service’s decision to phase out ranching at Point Reyes National Seashore (PRNS) was widely celebrated as a victory for environmentalism. Yet beneath the headlines lies a more complicated reality. This thesis argues that the removal of historic ranches from PRNS reflects not a triumph of conservation, but a profound missed opportunity for climate leadership, community resilience, and regenerative stewardship. Drawing on historical records, environmental management policies, and case studies such as Straus Family Creamery, this research examines how public perception, litigation, and internal agency pressures shaped the outcome. It explores how ranchers, originally promised …

Where Does The Money Go? Three Essays On Intergovernmental Transfers, Spending, And Poverty In Indonesia, Jacobus Cd Rijoly Jan 2025

Where Does The Money Go? Three Essays On Intergovernmental Transfers, Spending, And Poverty In Indonesia, Jacobus Cd Rijoly

Theses and Dissertations--Public Policy and Administration

Indonesia allocates substantial intergovernmental transfers to local governments; nonetheless, the decrease in poverty remains limited. This dissertation posits that the binding constraint is institutional, specifically the regulations and incentives that dictate the extent to which funds are allocated from the government to designated programs. Institutional pass-through refers to the fraction of a transfer that is allocated to a program expenditure. The three essays integrate estimation, budget composition evidence, and a formal model to explain both modest average effects and heterogeneity across regions and programs.

The first essay evaluates the impact of transfers on provincial poverty from 2001 to 2022 by …

Aquinas And Arendt On Friendship And The Life We Live With Others, Joseph A. Guillermo Jan 2025

Aquinas And Arendt On Friendship And The Life We Live With Others, Joseph A. Guillermo

Philosophy Department Faculty Publications

This paper explores how Thomas Aquinas and Hannah Arendt, emerging from radically different metaphysical and historical contexts, each engage Aristotle’s concept of friendship to respond to the crises of political life in their respective eras. Aquinas, working within a medieval theological framework, elevates Aristotle’s virtue-friendship (philia) into a teleological union grounded in caritas, where human beings, through grace, may even be called friends of God. Both thinkers resist the reduction of human relations to utility or private preference. Aquinas affirms that political life, properly understood, participates in a divine order where friendship sustains community through mutual moral striving. Arendt, by …

Evaluating The Potential For An Eco-Museum In Mon Village Through The Lens Of Sustainable Development, Yanran Huang

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

This study uses the Mon Village in Sangkhlaburi, Thailand, as a case study to explore the feasibility of establishing an eco-museum through the lens of sustainable development. As a “museum without walls,” the eco-museum emphasizes community participation, cultural continuity, and ecological protection, offering distinctive value compared to conventional museums. The research first outlines the significance of eco-museums in cultural preservation, ecological conservation, community development, and policy innovation, noting that such institutions have not yet been formally established in Thailand. A qualitative methodology was adopted, combining semi-structured interviews, field observations, and document analysis to collect diverse perspectives from community residents, cultural …

The Transculturation Of K-Pop Fans’ Practices : A Case Study Of “Call Me By Fire Vietnamese Version”, Thi Thuy Ngoc Nguyen Jan 2025

The Transculturation Of K-Pop Fans’ Practices : A Case Study Of “Call Me By Fire Vietnamese Version”, Thi Thuy Ngoc Nguyen

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

This research examines the transculturation of Vietnamese K-pop fans’ practices through the case study of Call Me By Fire Vietnamese Version, analyzing how these practices shape domestic fandom and contribute to Vietnam’s entertainment industry. Using a mixed-methods approach (an online survey, twelve in-depth interviews, and digital ethnography), the research applies Transculturation Theory (Ortiz, 1940) and Participatory Culture (Jenkins, 1992, 2006; Jenkins et al., 2016) to conceptualize the show as a contact zone where global fan cultures intersect with local norms. Findings show that while K-pop fan practices serve as a central influence, they are reconfigured through three phases. In deculturation, …

Healing Communities With Police Divestment: Seeking Abolition Through Transformative Reform And Community-Government Collaboration, Jessica E. Gillson

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Concerns about the efficacy and sustainability of the U.S. carceral system have persisted throughout the country’s history, recently fueling renewed activism and bipartisan calls for reform. However, proposed solutions remain divisive. This thesis first defines the current status of our prison systems, then explores collaborative alternatives to incarceration and policing that support communities and break cycles of incarceration.

Focusing on partnerships among local governments, community organizations, justice-involved individuals, and law enforcement, this study examines holistic approaches to crime prevention, reentry, and reintegration. Using an interdisciplinary framework incorporating restorative justice, community resilience, and systems theory, it investigates how community-based strategies can …

[Introduction] Communities across the globe are being affected by climate change in numerous ways. However, those most often affected, especially by sea level rise, are those small island nations that are pressed for space already; this includes the island of Grenada. Grenada is located in the southern portion of the Caribbean and is bordered by the Caribbean Sea (West) and the Atlantic Ocean (East). The planning and development authority (PDA) has been identified as the main stakeholder involved in this case study, but recommendations will be made to all parties involved to best accomplish our mission.

Key stakeholders were initially …

Rooted In Resistance, Growing In Boriken: The Fight For Climate And Agricultural Justice In Puerto Rico, Jada Melendez

LEAD Scholars Academy Showcase

This project examines how Puerto Rico’s agricultural system has been shaped by historical colonization, economic policy, and climate change. Once largely self-sustaining, the island now imports more than 85 percent of its food, creating major vulnerabilities during natural disasters and economic disruptions. My research analyzes four key systems of injustice political, economic, social, and environmental and how they intersect to impact food sovereignty. The project also highlights grassroots solutions such as agroecology education, land protection, and investment in sustainable infrastructure. Through this work, I developed a deeper understanding of how colonial legacies continue to affect food systems today and how …

Resilience Imagined In The Mississippi Delta: Exploring Housing, Education, And Community Adaptation In Mississippi’S Internal Colonies, Semonti Jannat

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study examines the impact of housing insecurity on educational attainment and community resilience in Cartersville, Mississippi, a historically marginalized community in the Mississippi Delta. Utilizing a qualitative research design, the study draws from in-depth interviews with eleven primary caregivers, revealing the multifaceted ways in which inadequate housing conditions affect children’s learning environments, mental health, and academic performance. The findings indicate that housing instability, manifested through overcrowding, poor infrastructure, and high financial burdens, significantly disrupts students’ educational experiences, contributing to absenteeism, limited academic focus, and stress-induced underperformance.

While the study highlights the persistent socioeconomic challenges linked to the enduring legacies …

The New Urbanism In New York City: A Case Study Comparing Battery Park City And Alphabet City, Lena Farley Jan 2025

The New Urbanism In New York City: A Case Study Comparing Battery Park City And Alphabet City, Lena Farley

Pomona Senior Theses

This thesis examines two Manhattan neighborhoods, Battery Park City and Alphabet City, through the lens of New Urbanism—an urban planning approach developed in the 1990s. New Urbanist principles prioritize walkability, connectivity, mixed-use development, diversity, varied housing options, architectural quality, green transportation, sustainability, and accessible green spaces. While Battery Park City represents a top-down, master-planned New Urbanist neighborhood based on a 1979 plan, Alphabet City emerged from the 1811 Manhattan grid with significant community-driven design, notably through community gardens and grassroots initiatives. Using a mixed-methods approach including residential surveys, qualitative, and quantitative analyses, this research investigates how these neighborhoods embody New …
