“I Didn't Come Here To Make Money”: Exploring Power 4 Athletes’ Perceptions Of Exploitation, Sarah Stokowski, Chris Corr, Kaleigh Smith, Elijah Toney, Emma Kate Bostick, Eileen Russell, Brooke Prince, Michael Godfrey

Journal of Issues in Intercollegiate Athletics

While it is widely noted that athletes competing in National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) athletics are exploited in a variety of ways, scholarly examinations of college athlete exploitation have rarely sought to engage athletes themselves. Accordingly, researchers conducted in-depth, detailed, semi-structured interviews with college athletes currently competing in Power 4 conferences to uncover their perceptions of exploitation based on their lived experiences. Ten athletes representing five distinct sports (baseball, football, gymnastics, softball, and track and field) competing in the Atlantic Coast Conference, Big Ten Conference, and Southeastern Conference agreed to participate in the study. Findings indicate the characteristics of participants’ …

College Student-Athlete Identity Unveiled: The Interplay Of Racial And Ethnic Subdimensions, Trevor Bopp, Rhema Fuller, Michael Stellefson May 2025

College Student-Athlete Identity Unveiled: The Interplay Of Racial And Ethnic Subdimensions, Trevor Bopp, Rhema Fuller, Michael Stellefson

Journal of Issues in Intercollegiate Athletics

The racialized and institutionalized structure of the NCAA, college sports, and the PWIs that host most athletic programs positions racial and ethnic identity as a potential barrier to the social and academic engagement, mental health, and identity development of student-athletes. However, few studies examine the relationship, role, and influence of racial, student, and athlete identities outside of domain-specific outcomes. We collected data from 343 student-athletes to explore the relationships between student-athletes' academic and athletic identities, race centrality, and private and public regard, while also examining how race and ethnicity influence these identity dynamics. Our results revealed race and ethnicity to …

Ncaa Student-Athletes' Sports Gambling Behaviors Examined Using Psychological Reactance Theory, Braden E. Norris, Paul M. Pedersen

Journal of Issues in Intercollegiate Athletics

Since the repeal of the Pro and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA) in 2018, sports gambling has been a rapidly growing segment of the sport world. The United States federal government has left it up to individual states to legalize and govern the activity of sports gambling, however, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) still prohibits (Bylaw 10.3) the activity regardless of legality. With it known that student-athletes violate Bylaw 10.3 (e.g., Paskus & Derevensky, 2025; Richard et al., 2019), this study examined sports gambling behaviors through under the scope of Psychological Reactance Theory (PRT) to investigate if student-athletes’ sports …

Recruitment Of International College Athletes (Icas) To The United States: A Bourdieuian Examination Of Pathways To Success, Simran Kaur Sethi, Kirsten Hextrum, Kaitlin Pericak May 2025

Recruitment Of International College Athletes (Icas) To The United States: A Bourdieuian Examination Of Pathways To Success, Simran Kaur Sethi, Kirsten Hextrum, Kaitlin Pericak

Journal of Issues in Intercollegiate Athletics

Successful recruitment pathways of international college athletes (ICAs) remain understudied. We use Bourdieu’s capital exchange theory to examine how ICAs acquire and deploy forms of capital to navigate college athletic recruitment. Bourdieu posits that individuals accumulate different forms of capital, including economic, social, and cultural capital, which they can use to gain access to resources and opportunities. In the context of athletic recruitment, ICAs may need to acquire different forms of capital than their domestic counterparts. Thus, we use a qualitative research design to explore how ICAs navigate the recruitment process. Findings from our study provide valuable insights into the …

Academic Professionals’ Perspectives On Return To Learn Following Concussion In Ncaa Student-Athletes, Tom Bowman, Monica R. Lininger, Alicia M. Pike Lacy, Johna K. Register-Mihalik, Steven M. Myers, Stephanie M. Singe

Journal of Issues in Intercollegiate Athletics

While evidence supports the gradual return to participation in collegiate athletics following a concussion, limited evidence exists of the return to learn (RTL) procedures for a successful return to the higher education classroom. The objective of this study was to determine what academic supports and hindrances are present for NCAA student-athletes during the RTL process following a concussion from academic professionals’ perspectives. In this qualitative study with purposive recruitment strategies, academic support professionals (5=female, 4=male, age=44.2±13.9 years, experience=11.6±10.4 years) and faculty athletic representatives (5=female, 5=male, age=48.6±7.8 years, experience=3.9±5.6 years) volunteered to complete virtual interviews. We conducted semistructured one-on-one interviews with …

Fan Perceptions Of Dynamic Ticket Pricing In Professional Sports: The Impact Of Transparency, Incentives, And Demographics, Joshua Greer, Nicholas Zoroya

The COSMA Journal

Abstract

Dynamic Ticket Pricing (DTP) has become a widely implemented strategy in professional sports, allowing organizations to adjust ticket prices based on demand fluctuations. While DTP optimizes revenue generation for teams, its impact on fan perceptions, purchasing behavior, and loyalty remains a crucial consideration. This study examines the influence of age, gender, pricing transparency, and promotional incentives on fans’ perceptions of fairness, trust, and purchasing decisions within a dynamic pricing model.

A total of 57 participants completed a survey assessing their attitudes toward DTP. Key areas of analysis included perceived fairness, willingness to pay for high-demand games, trust in pricing …

Does A Star Player’S Jewelry Matter? An Analysis Of Nba Real Team Value, Brandon C. Penticoff

Undergraduate Economics Working Paper Series

This study dives into the financial and sport factors that impact team market value and revenue. This study's results confirm that star players significantly enhance team value, with NBA Superstars adding nearly $500 million annually. This study discovered the prominence of a Principal-Agent Problem between star players and NBA front offices over the issue of championship pursuit. The analysis also identifies an optimal style of play for revenue generation, but that could oppose longer-term team value. These findings have critical implications for NBA front offices, owners, and coaching staffs.

Sustainability In Sports: Exploring Scope 3 Emissions, Transparency The Need For Standardized Frameworks, Tatiana Pineda Del Rosario

Master's Projects and Capstones

Professional sports leagues contribute to environmental impacts through large-scale travel and event-related operations, particularly from fan and team transportation. While many leagues have made public commitments to sustainability, there is limited consistency in how those efforts are tracked or reported. Scope 3 emissions, which include fan and team travel, are often overlooked despite being a significant part of a sports organization’s carbon footprint. For example, in the 2024 season, the MLB, NBA, and NFL collectively took an estimated 7,502 flights to away games. This number does not account for the millions of fans who travel to stadiums each season, often …

Sustainability In Professional Sports: A New Nexus Of Profit And Social Responsibility, Matthew Teplitz May 2025

Sustainability In Professional Sports: A New Nexus Of Profit And Social Responsibility, Matthew Teplitz

Master's Theses

The world is facing a climate crisis – corrective action that will improve our collective situation is needed, now. Those with the power to do so, in the capitalist structure under which we live, are largely the individuals, corporations, and governments with financial resources and the platform to inspire others to act. Two such entities, complete with the financial heft to make a difference and inspiration to spare, are North America’s National Basketball Association (NBA) and Spain’s La Liga. This thesis seeks to understand what distinguishes the NBA’s approach to sustainability from La Liga, and by employing each league as …

Honors College Theses

This thesis explores the effectiveness of cross-industry partnerships as a strategic marketing tool through the case study of Spotify and Ferrari Formula 1’s collaboration, Sound of the Circuit. The central research question investigates how such a partnership can expand Formula 1’s reach within the U.S. market, particularly among millennial and Gen Z audiences. With growing interest in Formula 1 driven by cultural phenomena such as Netflix’s Drive to Survive, and the continued dominance of Spotify in youth-centered audio streaming, this thesis examines how these two global brands can align to engage a shared audience and generate mutual commercial value. Using …

Functional Electrical Stimulation For Foot Drop: A Narrative Review, Garrett R. Watson May 2025

Functional Electrical Stimulation For Foot Drop: A Narrative Review, Garrett R. Watson

Honors Thesis

Foot drop (FD) is a neuromuscular impairment that limits ankle dorsiflexion during walking. It often leads to unsafe gait patterns, increases the risk of falls, and reduces independence. Functional electrical stimulation (FES) has emerged as a promising rehabilitation tool that activates muscles or nerves to improve foot clearance and support motor recovery. Unlike passive devices such as ankle-foot orthoses, FES promotes active neuromuscular engagement and may foster long-term improvements through neuroplastic adaptation. This narrative review examines the causes and clinical consequences of FD and evaluates the role of FES in restoring functional mobility. Key topics include FES technologies, stimulation parameters, …

The Nexus Of Sports Fandom And Sports Wagering: A Scoping Review, Brandon Mastromartino, Michael L. Naraine, Henry Wear

UNLV Gaming Research & Review Journal

This scoping review examines the intersection of sports fandom and sports betting, with a particular focus on the marketing considerations involved in this relationship. Sports fandom, driven by strong emotional investments and team identification, plays a critical role in shaping betting behaviors. As this relationship becomes increasingly complex, it is essential to explore the underlying motivations and behaviors of sports fans who engage in betting, the ethical implications of marketing practices targeting this group, and the methodologies used to study this intersection. To address these relationships, this review examines four key areas: motivations for sports fans to engage in betting, …

The Menstrual Cycle And Exercise Performance: A Literature Review, Reagan E. Burchill May 2025

The Menstrual Cycle And Exercise Performance: A Literature Review, Reagan E. Burchill

Honors Thesis

This literature review will examine the current research investigating the relationship between the female menstrual cycle, exercise performance, and exercise instruction. The menstrual cycle is a physiological series of events that includes specific hormones at each stage. These hormones may play a role in how females recover from exercise. This is particularly significant when considering the hormonal fluctuations across the female menstrual cycle, which influence recovery, injury risk, and exercise performance. This could indicate that the suggestions doctors and exercise trainers present to females may not be as beneficial for their health because the research is not specifically tailored to …

Agreement Between Methods For Describing The Intensity Of A High Intensity Functional Training Workout, James W. Henley May 2025

Agreement Between Methods For Describing The Intensity Of A High Intensity Functional Training Workout, James W. Henley

Master's Theses

This study examined whether a speed-based metric, expressed as percent of maximal speed (%MS), could serve as a practical and accurate method for quantifying intensity in high-intensity functional training (HIFT). Traditional intensity markers—heart rate (HR), blood lactate concentration ([La-]), and rating of perceived exertion (RPE)—were compared to %MS during low- and high-volume (LV, HV) workouts using a combination of correlation and agreement analyses. Twelve males and twelve females completed a baseline assessment followed by two experimental workout sessions. Participants wore HR monitors, provided pre- and post-exercise [La-] samples and RPE scores, and performed maximal speed tests for each workout movement. …
