Determinants Of Job Satisfaction And Dissatisfaction Among Practitioners Employed In Intercollegiate Sport Organizations, Ian Cooper, Chantel Heinsen, Michael Diacin
Determinants Of Job Satisfaction And Dissatisfaction Among Practitioners Employed In Intercollegiate Sport Organizations, Ian Cooper, Chantel Heinsen, Michael Diacin
Butler Journal of Undergraduate Research
The purpose of this study was to gain insight into factors that influence job satisfaction and dissatisfaction among intercollegiate athletics department employees. Factors influencing job satisfaction could impact one’s job performance and willingness to remain in a job. When employees are satisfied with their work, they are more likely to remain at their job and successfully complete tasks in association with the job (Kaltenbaugh, 2009; Dixon & Warner, 2010). In order to gain insight with regard to factors influencing job satisfaction, five individuals who were employed within intercollegiate athletics departments participated in this study. Four of the participants worked at …

Perceptions Of Athletic Identity: A Case Study Of A Niche Club Sport, Alex Traugutt, Jacob Augustin, Rammi Hazzaa
The Qualitative Report
Research on athletic identity has been robust, however, there remains a gap in the literature regarding its perceived impact among collegiate club sport athletes. The subject of the present study was the niche sport of quidditch, a co-ed contact sport that is currently being played at over 200 colleges and universities across the United States. The primary purpose of this research was to investigate the perceptions of athletic identity among quidditch participants. In addition, it was also of interest to understand the degree to which spectators perceive the athletic identity of the participants and the game of quidditch in general. …

Predictors In Finishing Position Of Ncaa Division Ii Schools In The Learfield Sports-Nacda Directors’ Cup: Culture Type As A Potential Mediator, Ryan D. Kettler
Health, Exercise, and Sports Sciences ETDs
Predictor variables, institution type and annual allocated revenue, were investigated as potential predictors of success in NCAA Division II Athletic Departments, on the outcome variable (points scored in the Learfield sports-NACDA Directors’ Cup), working through mediating variables representing culture type (clan, adhocracy, market, and hierarchy). Data were collected through an electronic survey emailed to all NCAA Division II institution athletic directors and head coaches. Data specific to institution type (public vs private) and the number of points an athletic department earned in the Learfield sports-NACDA Directors’ Cup was also collected from archived records. Statistical testing included the use of SPSS …

Social Studies Teacher–Athletic Coaches' Experiences Coping With Role Conflict R2, Caroline Conner, Chara Haeussler Bohan
Social Studies Teacher–Athletic Coaches' Experiences Coping With Role Conflict R2, Caroline Conner, Chara Haeussler Bohan
Journal of Educational Research and Practice
The current study provides insight into the experiences of the most common content area teacher–coaches: social studies teacher–coaches. Substantial research findings support the idea that occupying the dual role of teacher–coach may lead to role conflict, role overload, and burnout in teacher–coaches. The purpose of the study is to illuminate the unique stressors associated with occupying the dual role of social studies teacher and athletic coach (SSTC) simultaneously, and to discover ways in which SSTCs manage such conflict. Through a case study of three football SSTCs in the southeastern United States, we explored participants’ experiences with role conflict, role overload, …
Athletic Identity, Institutional Support Services, And Transition Factors: An Analysis Of Student-Athlete Perceptions And Implications, John Nowak Kaczorowski
Athletic Identity, Institutional Support Services, And Transition Factors: An Analysis Of Student-Athlete Perceptions And Implications, John Nowak Kaczorowski
Theses and Dissertations
Brewer, Van Raalte and Linder (1993) defined the term athletic identity as the degree to which a person identifies with the role of an athlete and seeks outside acknowledgement of that role. Those who have a high athletic identity tend to be those who have achieved elite levels within athletics. These elite athletes tend to base their self-worth and self-esteem on their ability, performance and the appreciation of their athletic talent, while gradually neglecting other aspects of psycho-social development (Cieslak II, 2004). These resulting deficits have been attributed to what is called identity foreclosure in the literature. High-stakes athletes can …

Sport Motivation Of Senior Athletes, Jenna Mammenga
Sport Motivation Of Senior Athletes, Jenna Mammenga
Honors Thesis
The population of older adults is rapidly growing in the United States, though many of these individuals do not meet the Center for Disease Control recommended activity and exercise recommendations. A select group however, senior athletes, appear to be to active and, in fact, surpass these recommendations with their activity level. The motivation of this unique population of actively aging adults has not been carefully studied. The purpose of this study was to better understand the motivating factors of older adults who participate in competitive sports and to further investigate how motivation may be impacted by age, gender, marital status, …

Association Between Neuromuscular Characteristics Of Agility In Jumping Tasks, Lara Boman
Association Between Neuromuscular Characteristics Of Agility In Jumping Tasks, Lara Boman
Honors Thesis
This study evaluated the influence of drop height on and the statistical associations between Sheppard & Young’s (2006) three neuromuscular characteristics of agility: reactive strength, concentric strength and power, and bilateral symmetry. Nine NCAA DI women’s volleyball players completed a depthjumping protocol at three different drop heights. Ground reaction force data was used to calculate the reactive strength index (RSI); peak and average power, peak and average force; and percent differences between the right and left lower limbs in peak and average power and force. Each neuromuscular characteristic was statistically associated with drop height, each of the other two neuromuscular …
Team Tradition In American Professional Sports Naming-Rights Deals, Jordan Lacoste
Team Tradition In American Professional Sports Naming-Rights Deals, Jordan Lacoste
Gabelli School of Business Honors Thesis Collection
Stadium sponsorship and renaming have become highly visible in professional sports in the United States. Currently, the top twelve corporate naming-rights sponsorships in the US are worth $3.3 billion, and the number of stadia without corporate names continues to shrink each year (Badenhausen, 2016). Naming-rights sponsors include some of the largest corporations in America including AT&T, Citicorp, and numerous consumer products companies. Yet, with all this investment there has been little quantitative research on the effects of corporate renaming of sports venues. This research makes an initial step to analyze the effects of stadium renaming in professional sports, particularly on …

Who Are The Most Willing Potential Investors To Accept Entity Wagering?, Akash Bhatia
Gabelli School of Business Honors Thesis Collection
This study investigates the characteristics of potential investors in entity wagering, a novel investment strategy legalized in Nevada in 2015, allowing pooled funds to be wagered in sports markets. Through a survey of 201 consumers, the research aimed to identify early adopters by examining the overlap between sports fans, fantasy sports participants, and sports bettors with prospective entity wagering investors. Results confirm that these groups share similar characteristics, indicating a target market for entity wagering funds. Key findings reveal a strong interest among respondents who are male, exhibit a higher level of sports fandom, and engage in fantasy sports or …

The Perceived Centrality Of Spirituality In Athletic Competition, Joel Perttula
The Perceived Centrality Of Spirituality In Athletic Competition, Joel Perttula
Doctor of Education (Ed.D)
Spirituality, while not visible, is a central component in athletic competition. This study examined the perceived centrality of spirituality in athletic competition among Christian athletes. To do so, a theological understanding of the image of God was developed and considered participant gender, ethnicity, student’s level of standing, preferred sport, and cultural environment associated with the preferred sport for the purpose of identifying the most robust, statistically significant correlate and predictor of the perceived centrality of spirituality in athletic competition. The quantitative study utilized survey research methodology. A total of 65 student-athletes were approached and the first 53 athletes who provided …
