Sex Comparisons Of Agonist And Antagonist Muscle Electromyographic Parameters During Two Different Submaximal Isometric Fatiguing Tasks, Sunggun Jeon, Xin Ye, William M. Miller

Faculty and Student Publications

© 2019 The Authors. Physiological Reports published by Wiley Periodicals, Inc. on behalf of The Physiological Society and the American Physiological Society. To examine the task failure time of the force- and position-based submaximal elbow flexion fatiguing tasks for both sexes, twelve men and eight women visited the laboratory for two separate experimental occasions. During the experiment, they pulled against a rigid restraint for the force task and maintained a constant elbow joint angle to support an equivalent inertial load for the position task. For both fatiguing tasks (50% of the isometric strength at the elbow joint angle of 135 …

Faculty and Student Publications

© 2019 The Authors. Molecular Genetics & Genomic Medicine published by Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Background: Heteroplasmic mitochondrial 3697G>A mutation has been associated with leber hereditary optic neuropathy (LHON), mitochondrial encephalopathy, lactic acidosis and stroke-like episodes (MELAS), and LHON/MELAS overlap syndrome. However, homoplasmic m.3697G>A mutation was only found in a family with Leigh syndrome, and the phenotype and pathogenicity of this homoplasmic mutation still need to be investigated in new patients. Methods: The clinical interviews were conducted in 12 individuals from a multiple-generation inherited family. Mutations were screened through exome next-generation sequencing and subsequently confirmed by PCR-restriction fragment length …

Attendance In The Canadian Hockey League: The Impact Of Winning, Fighting, Uncertainty Of Outcome, And Weather On Junior Hockey Attendance, Rodney Paul, Andrew Weinbach, Nick Riccardi

Finance and Economics

An attendance model is specified for the Canadian Hockey League (CHL), the top level of junior hockey in Canada with some teams located in the United States. The natural log of attendance is used as the dependent variable, with explanatory variables consisting of the timing of the game, team performance characteristics, uncertainty of outcome measures, and weather-related variables. Weekends and Mondays were the most popular days for games. Winning and fighting were shown to be popular team characteristics that drive attendance. Uncertainty of outcome plays little role, if any, in fan interest at this level, while precipitation significantly reduces attendance.

Dancers Exhibit Different Organizations Of Muscular Effort In The Dominant Versus Non-Dominant Limb During The Impact Phase Of The Grand Jeté, Brandon Nunley, Ryan Lanier, Isabella Gonzales, Tanya Calamoneri, Ali Duffy, John Robert Harry Feb 2019

Dancers Exhibit Different Organizations Of Muscular Effort In The Dominant Versus Non-Dominant Limb During The Impact Phase Of The Grand Jeté, Brandon Nunley, Ryan Lanier, Isabella Gonzales, Tanya Calamoneri, Ali Duffy, John Robert Harry

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Overuse musculoskeletal injuries of the hip, knee, and ankle are prevalent in dancers. Differences in muscular effort between the dominant and non-dominant limbs may increase musculoskeletal injury risk during dance movements involving a jump followed by a high-impact unilateral landing. PURPOSE: To investigate potential differences in lower extremity muscular effort (i.e., joint angular work) between the dominant and non-dominant limbs during the landing phase of a grand jeté movement in dancers. METHODS: Collegiate dancers consisting of eight women (19 ± 1 y; 54.7 ± 6.9 kg; 1.7 ± 0.1 m) and two men (21 ± 1 y; 70.6 …

Effects Of A 12 Week Walking Intervention On Exercise Barriers In Obesity Using An Anti-Gravity Treadmill, Hunter W. Turnipseed, Nadeeja N. Wijayatunga, Emily J. Dhurandhar Feb 2019

Effects Of A 12 Week Walking Intervention On Exercise Barriers In Obesity Using An Anti-Gravity Treadmill, Hunter W. Turnipseed, Nadeeja N. Wijayatunga, Emily J. Dhurandhar

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Exercise barriers in people with obesity, such as low quality of life, physical activity enjoyment, and self-efficacy may contribute to an increased sedentary lifestyle. However, the use of an anti-gravity treadmill that is able to support and elevate weight during exercise to reduce these barriers has not been examined. PURPOSE: To examine how an anti-gravity treadmill during 12- weeks of aerobic exercise effects Physical activity enjoyment (PAE), physical functioning, self-efficacy, and quality of life (QOL) in people with obesity. METHODS: 26 participants (10 male, 16 female) participated in a self-directed 12 week walking program using an anti-gravity treadmill. …

Exercise Cerebral Blood Flow Hemodynamics Differ In Hot Dry And Humid Conditions, Julianna J. Kilpatrick, Paolo Miguel Salvador, Kyleigh Allie, Eric Rivas Feb 2019

Exercise Cerebral Blood Flow Hemodynamics Differ In Hot Dry And Humid Conditions, Julianna J. Kilpatrick, Paolo Miguel Salvador, Kyleigh Allie, Eric Rivas

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Passive and exercise-heat stress have been reported to cause reductions in cerebral blood flow (CBF); however, it is unknown if CBF velocity is different under hot dry and humid conditions. PURPOSE: This project tested the hypothesis that upright rest and exercise-heat stress in hot dry and humid conditions result in similar CBF reductions. METHODS: Seven healthy active (7 day activity: 9887±3564 steps/day; VO2max: 52±10 mL/kg/min) subjects (5M/2F, 24±9y, 171±6cm, 68±7kg) completed a 30 min baseline rest followed by 60 min of exercise at a rate of perceived exertion (RPE) of 12 (between light and somewhat hard) on a …
