Silence As A Strategy, Jarvis L. Steele May 2019

Silence As A Strategy, Jarvis L. Steele

Honors College Theses

Understanding the struggle that is peaceful protest is a task that has two unexplored components. The first is how leaders of political movements and protest groups are able to influence the masses to not waiver in their non-violent, peaceful approach. The second is how political groups learn from the failures and successes of the previous campaigns. We are given these circumstances where governmental violence and abuse would normally lead to a retaliatory response from groups, but in order to maintain the fidelity of the movement leaders of these political protests have to protect the nonviolent approach. These are instances where …

Educator Preparation & Leadership Faculty Works

Head injuries in sports often go unnoticed and untreated with a risk of increasing the severity of neurological difficulties for affected athletes. While there is much research on athletes in developed countries, the data on athletes from developing countries is lacking. Using a descriptive case study approach, this report focuses on concussions from four main sports (football, athletics, basketball and rugby). Emphasis was placed on those athletes who had been identified with a sport-related concussion (SRC). The phases of emergency, intermediate, rehabilitative, and return to sports participation were considered in this study. Three SRC cases from both male and female …

Text Versus Pictures In Advertising: Effects Of Psychological Distance And Product Type, Yung Kyun Choi, Sukki Yoon, Kacy Kim, Yeonshin Kim

Marketing Department Faculty Journal Articles

The authors examine effects of marketing messages that use text or pictures for advertising durable or nondurable products appealing to consumers’ perceptions of close versus far psychological distance. In three studies, ads featuring text (pictures) evoke more favourable attitudes and purchase intentions toward products to be purchased in the distant (close) future or at a distant (close) location. In addition, ads featuring text (pictures) evoke more favourable attitudes and purchase intentions for durable (nondurable) goods. The research shows that marketers will be most persuasive if they ensure congruence among message formats, product types, and psychological distance.

Organizational Resilience Of Family Businesses, Tomasz Ingram, Katarzyna Bratnicka-Myśliwiec May 2019

Organizational Resilience Of Family Businesses, Tomasz Ingram, Katarzyna Bratnicka-Myśliwiec

European Management Studies

Organizational resilience is a complex, strategic question that still lacks a clear answer, in particular relating to whether and how it is beneficial for the competitive advantage of a family business. We define organizational resilience of a family business as a dynamic, ambidextrous capability to recover from and positively adjust to an unexpected, adverse situation. In this study, using the strategic management theoretical background, we link organizational resilience to the competitive advantage of family businesses. We test this conjecture using data from 193 Polish small and medium-sized manufacturing family businesses. Drawing on these findings, we conceptualize organizational resilience along two …

Autoethnography As A Lighthouse: Illuminating Race, Research, And The Politics Of Schooling: A Book Review, Katja Sonkeng

The Qualitative Report

What do a lighthouse and an autoethnography have in common? Whether symbolically or literally, both elements seek to help to navigate through rough waters by providing warnings and guidance. Using this powerful analogy, the editors Stephen Hancock, Ayana Allen, and Chance W. Lewis (2015) crafted a powerful narrative, titled Autoethnography as a Lighthouse: Illuminating Race, Research, and the Politics of Schooling as a volume in the book series Contemporary Perspectives on Access, Equity, and Achievement, edited by Chance W. Lewis and published by Information Age. As poignantly stated right at the beginning of the introductory chapter, the primary aim …

Evaluating An Mlb General Manager’S Bang For Their Buck, Devin Mathura May 2019

Evaluating An Mlb General Manager’S Bang For Their Buck, Devin Mathura

Honors College Theses

With my passion for baseball, I decided to calculate the value of each player on an MLB active roster and determine whether they are underpaid or overpaid. I then used that information to evaluate and rank how efficient each MLB general manager utilizes their money on players. With the luxury tax becoming more of an issue for teams with high payrolls, there has been an emphasis on general managers to construct a team that will be highly competitive at a reasonably low price. In my report, I imported data that reflected the position for each player as well as their …

Shaping The Southeastern Conference: Commercialization And Deregulation During The Great Depression And World War Ii, James Lawrence Watkins May 2019

Shaping The Southeastern Conference: Commercialization And Deregulation During The Great Depression And World War Ii, James Lawrence Watkins

Theses and Dissertations

The dissertation examines how member institutions in the Southeastern Conference (SEC) managed their college football programs during World War II. This time period in college sport history is unique because a few university presidents at SEC institutions believed the war gave them the opportunity to permanently implement reforms such as reducing practice hours and limiting the high salaries of coaches. Previous historiography demonstrates that these reforms did not come to fruition. Why were the university presidents and faculty, who claimed responsibility for governing the SEC, unable to capitalize on the opportunity they believed the war had given them to reform …

How Successful High School Boys Soccer Coaches Perceive And Develop Cultural Competency: A Grounded Theory Approach, Lauren Jefferson

In order to serve the increasingly diverse U.S. student population equitably and to the full holistic potential of extracurricular programming, high school coaches must develop a greater comfort with and capacity for exercising cultural competency. A qualitative approach using a grounded theory was applied. Seven coaches and one athletic director were recruited by purposive sampling. The research suggests a process-oriented, chronological model of how experienced coaches begin to work with …

What Implications Can Be Made From The Interactions Between Finances And Violations For Division 1 Men's Basketball Schools?, Michael Burton

Sport Management Undergraduate

The purpose of this study was to find out what types of schools violated as well as the implications these violations had on internal finances. This research was practical and important because of it suggested possible motive for schools that want to increase revenue or win percentage. The NCAA could use this information to narrow their efforts on possible violators through the use of trends. Athletic departments could use this information to anticipate future violations and stop them before they occur.

What was already known was that schools that win, generate a larger profit than those who don’t. The method …

Understanding the psychological involvement of sports fans could play a major role in improving attendance numbers and providing consumers with a greater experience during football games. The primary goal of this research was to determine predictors of sports involvement among Southern Miss football fans. Another goal was to determine which facets of involvement predicted return intentions. With those who had attended a home Southern Miss football game in …
