Leadership Style In A Faith-Based Athletic Department Setting, Adam P. Ybarra
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In this intrinsic case study, the researcher sought to explore athletic directors’ leadership styles with their coaches’ and administrators’ workplace satisfaction at a Christian-affiliated college in the Southwestern United States. The study explored which leadership style is likely to encourage motivation (i.e., achievement, recognition, growth) and hygiene factors (i.e., policies, supervision, work conditions), which could potentially increase or decrease job satisfaction. The data collection method was semistructured interviews conducted with athletic department personnel. The researcher transcribed and quality-checked the interviews against the audio recordings. The transcripts were member-checked by sharing them with each of the study participants. The researcher analyzed …

Topics in Exercise Science and Kinesiology
Topics in Exercise Science and Kinesiology Volume 4: Issue 1, Article 2, 2023. The 3-min all-out cycling test (3MT) elicits valuable fitness metrics including V̇O2peak, HRmax, Critical Power (CP), and Work Above End Power (WEP; equivalent to work prime; W’). Twelve (n = 12) healthy active males were recruited to participate in the current study on the effects of the implementation of a race timer on the 3MT. Participants completed a V̇O2peak test and one 3MT familiarization trial before completing one standard 3MT and one 3MT with the presence of a countdown race timer in …

Acute Blood Flow Responses To Varying Blood Flow Restriction Pressures In The Lower Limbs, Bjoern Hornikel, Keith S. Saffold, Jacob A. Mota, Michael R. Esco, Michael V. Fedewa, Stefanie A. Wind, Lee J. Winchester
International Journal of Exercise Science
International Journal of Exercise Science 16(2): 118-128, 2023. The purpose of this study was to investigate lower limb blood flow responses under varying blood flow restriction (BFR) pressures based on individualized limb occlusion pressures (LOP) using a commonly used occlusion device. Twenty-nine participants (65.5% female, 23.8 ± 4.7 years) volunteered for this study. An 11.5cm tourniquet was placed around participants’ right proximal thigh, followed by an automated LOP measurement (207.1 ± 29.4mmHg). Doppler ultrasound was used to assess posterior tibial artery blood flow at rest, followed by 10% increments of LOP (10-90% LOP) in a randomized order. All data were …

Online Dispositional Flow Enhancement Training For Chinese Recreational Runners: A Single-Group Mixed-Method Evaluation, Lijuan Yang, Rajitha Menon
Online Dispositional Flow Enhancement Training For Chinese Recreational Runners: A Single-Group Mixed-Method Evaluation, Lijuan Yang, Rajitha Menon
Journal of Health Research
Background: There are limited studies examining the effectiveness of Mindful Sport Performance Enhancement (MSPE) on dispositional flow enhancement in the recreational population. This is the first empirical evaluation of an online 4-week MSPE designed to enhance dispositional flow in Chinese recreational runners.
Method: In this mixed-method study, a convergent design approach was adopted to examine the acceptability and effectiveness of the 4-week online MSPE in Chinese recreational runners (N = 41). The quantitative strand was designed with a single-group pre-test and post-test model in which the dispositional flow was assessed at 2-time points (i.e., pre and post) using the Chinese …

Evaluation Of Automated Anthropometrics Produced By Smartphone-Based Machine Learning: A Comparison With Traditional Anthropometric Assessments, Austin J. Graybeal, Caleb F. Brandner, Grant M. Tinsley
Faculty Publications
Automated visual anthropometrics produced by mobile applications are accessible and cost-effective with the potential to assess clinically relevant anthropometrics without a trained technician present. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate the precision and agreement of smartphone-based automated anthropometrics against reference tape measurements. Waist and hip circumference (WC; HC), waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), and waist-to-height ratio (W:HT), were collected from 115 participants (69 F) using a tape measure and two smartphone applications (MeThreeSixty®, myBVI®) across multiple smartphone types. Precision metrics were used to assess test-retest precision of the automated measures. Agreement between the circumferences produced by each mobile application …

European Management Studies
Purpose: The study intends to expand the current literature on Italian consumers’ brand preferences between local vs. global alternatives in the specific Italian food sector. Design/methodology/approach: This study draws on concepts largely investigated like cultural identity theory, consumer ethnocentrism, and product category involvement to examine the mechanisms that drive Italian consumers to prefer alternative local or global brands in the food sector. A non-hierarchical cluster analysis represents the core part of the quantitative research that involved 412 participants. Findings: By confirming the validity of existing studies, the present paper contributes to the food consumption literature by testing a conceptual model …

Journal of Accounting Auditing and Business
Online product reviews are efforts made by shop owners with the aim that their business can be known to the public. It is believed that people who are considered to know about products and people with the same interest in food and drinks will affect prospective buyers. Instagram is a platform that can implement this strategy. The role of expertise and people with similar interests that make content about product reviews viral on Instagram can attract the attention of prospective buyers. This study aimed to analyse the influence of the source of expertise and similar interests in customer loyalty through …
Exploring The Impact Of Coaches’ Emotional Abuse On Intercollegiate Student-Athletes’ Experiences, Katherine N. Alexander, Kat V. Adams, Travis E. Dorsch
Exploring The Impact Of Coaches’ Emotional Abuse On Intercollegiate Student-Athletes’ Experiences, Katherine N. Alexander, Kat V. Adams, Travis E. Dorsch
Human Development and Family Studies Student Research
Despite widespread anecdotal accounts of coaches’ emotional abuse in intercollegiate sports, empirical literature is lacking. To address this gap, the present exploratory study was designed to explore how former intercollegiate student-athletes interpreted experiences of emotionally abusive coaching. Former female NCAA and NJCAA student-athletes (N = 14; Mage = 25.3 years) took part in semi-structured, in-depth interviews. Data were interpreted using a constructivist grounded theory approach. The final product of the research was a three-stage grounded theory explaining how former student-athletes interpret their experiences of emotional abuse over time organized into sections on antecedents to abuse, experiences and actions …

Background: Electronic sports (esports) has become a practical intervention for young people craving social connections since the COVID-19 pandemic. Past studies have shown an equivocal role of esports participation in boosting social ties or social connectedness. It is unclear if their relationship is affected by subjective attitudes of gamers. Moreover, the present COVID-19 pandemic may further modify this relationship to a greater extent.
Objective: This study primarily aimed to investigate the moderating effect of participants' subjective attitudes toward esports gaming on the relationship between in-game interaction during esports participation and participants' anticipated social connectedness among Chinese young adults during the …
