The History Of Sports Inequality And How The Pressure On Female Athletes Affects Mental Health And Performance, Madeline Scarola
The History Of Sports Inequality And How The Pressure On Female Athletes Affects Mental Health And Performance, Madeline Scarola
Academic Festival
While physical health is a big part of female athletes and their performance, mental health is also an extremely important factor. The pressures that society puts on female athletes to constantly prove themselves equal to men, uphold their feminine image, and still be successful renders many female athletes to develop anxiety, depression, and eating disorders that will either cause harm to their performance, increase the likelihood of injury, or make them pull out of competition completely. As more elite female athletes are bringing conversations about the pressures they face and their mental health to the forefront, hopefully it will inspire …
Wage Gap In Women's Sports, Ian Watral
Wage Gap In Women's Sports, Ian Watral
Academic Festival
From the financial standpoint, to what extent do sports leagues contribute to the gendered wage gap in professional athletics, especially as they maintain and promote male performance as top viewership? Many top-tier woman athletes are far more athletic and financially deserving than a good number of male athletes we see today. For example, Serena Williams and Hope Solo. Both women are leaders not only to their team and on the field but to the entire sport for girls to look up to and the next generation of women in sports. However, their payment reflects otherwise compared to the male sports …

The Implications Of Successful Diversity, Equity, And Inclusion (Dei) Initiatives In The Ncaa, Jackson Tse
Academic Festival
Diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives are relatively new aspects of the NCAA, but they are becoming more important than ever. Initially introduced with the passing of Brown v. Board in 1954, DEI initiatives have grown to include legislation and organizations such as the Civil Rights Act, Title IX, and Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW). These represent the first of many steps to build a more welcoming and equitable environment for the NCAA’s stakeholders, especially in regard to racial and gender diversity. Despite all of the aforementioned initiatives, there are still gaps throughout the NCAA. Positions including athletic …
Towards A Globalised Vision Of Aquatic Competence, Rita F. Pinto, Juan Antonio Moreno Murcia
Towards A Globalised Vision Of Aquatic Competence, Rita F. Pinto, Juan Antonio Moreno Murcia
International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education
Human interaction with the aquatic environment has always taken different forms to meet the needs of pleasure, survival, therapy or performance. The diversity of existing aquatic spaces presents itself as a challenge, due to their variety, dynamism, unpredictability and unrepeatable conditions. These factors potentiate an infinite number of possibilities for human response in interaction with the aquatic environment, with aquatic competence being the one that will be able to sustain all types of interaction. Thus, the aim of the proposal has been to present a new approach to the contextualisation of aquatic competence. After a literature review on the concept …

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education
The aim of this article is to address the familiar question “Which swimming stroke should be taught first?” The discussion is usually focused on breaststroke versus crawl. Provoked by these naïve discussions of which stroke should be taught first (as if stroking equals swimming, which it emphatically does NOT), the question was answered metaphorically in an earlier article “No Stroke First – All Strokes First” (Stallman, 2008a). Here in Part I we identify and describe six strokes, all of which might be a candidate for any learners ‘very first’ stroke. We describe them as beginning strokes. Having identified and learned …

The 2015 Ncaa Cost-Of-Attendance Stipend And Its Effects On Institutional Financial Aid Packages, Sara Greene
The 2015 Ncaa Cost-Of-Attendance Stipend And Its Effects On Institutional Financial Aid Packages, Sara Greene
Honors Theses
In 2015, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) allowed “Cost of Attendance” (COA) stipends to be offered to athletic recruits for Division I schools. These stipends are intended to allow schools to grant aid to student-athletes beyond a full-ride scholarship to cover additional costs imposed on student-athletes. These stipends created an opportunity for the “Autonomy” Power 5 programs to utilize a competitive tactic to try to win over the top recruits. There is evidence that these COA stipends have caused an increase in the estimated cost of attendance reported by the university. This paper examines if the COA stipends have …

Building Student-Athlete Resilience On And Off The Field, Hannah Beatus
Building Student-Athlete Resilience On And Off The Field, Hannah Beatus
Masters Projects
Literature continues to demonstrate that student-athletes have a difficult time understanding how the skills they acquire as a student-athlete are transferrable to a non-sport environment. Student-athletes are exposed to messages about resilience early on in their athletic careers yet lack the understanding of how these skills are applicable to life outside of athletics. This project examines the aforementioned problem through an ecological systems theory lens. A workshop series designed to bring together student-athletes and coaches addresses this knowledge gap. It is hoped that by bringing together student-athletes and coaches that the development of resilience can be understood through a more …

Improving Student-Athlete Mental Health Through Wellness Check-Ins, Emma Erin Strasberger
Masters Projects
Mental health is an urgent topic in higher education as many college students are feeling an overwhelming sense of stress, anxiety, and depression. A population of students that significantly struggles with their mental health but does not utilize campus mental health services are student-athletes. Many student-athletes have reported wanting to reach out for help with their mental health, but they do now want to due to the stigma that seeking help makes an individual appear weak. This project explores the recent research regarding access to mental health services among collegiate student-athletes and how removing those barriers can encourage this population …

Does A Brisk Six Minute Walk Cause Upper Body Fatigue In Females, Kaden Buford
Does A Brisk Six Minute Walk Cause Upper Body Fatigue In Females, Kaden Buford
Symposium of Student Scholars
Non-local performance fatigue (NLPF) can be described as performance decrements occurring for a muscle group that was not directly involved in the fatiguing activity that preceded. Most studies on NLPF involve strenuous exercise of an isolated joint in trained populations, however, little evidence exists on NLPF derived from activities mimicking acts of daily living. Determining whether NLPF exists following brisk walking is worthwhile, and rate of force development (RFD), the rate at which muscle force is produced, may possess increased susceptibility compared to maximal strength. The purpose of our ongoing study is to determine the responses, if any, for maximal …

The Relationship Amongst Sleep, Gestational Weight Gain, and Insulin Resistance During Pregnancy
Authors: Ami Eho1, Dr. Janeen Amason2, Dr. Katherine H. Ingram3 (mentor)
INTRODUCTION: The Center for Disease Control and Prevention reports that 48% of pregnancies are affected by excessive weight gain. Gestational weight gain (GWG) is associated with adverse perinatal outcomes including insulin resistance, a precursor to type 2 diabetes. Short sleep duration and poor sleep quality are correlated with weight gain in general population but the relationship between sleep and weight gain during pregnancy is unclear. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate how sleep duration or sleep quality affect GWG and …

Examining The Relationship Between Exercise And Sleeping Patterns Among Bowling Green State University Faculty And Staff Members, Jorge Vazquez
Honors Projects
University faculty and staff work in a unique profession that encompasses individuals from a large age range. Exercise and sleeping patterns are an important component of maintaining health and preventing disease. Until recently there has been little research examining the exercise and sleeping patterns of faculty and staff members and what role these factors play in overall health. The information gathered in this study was used to analyze how university faculty members can adapt their lifestyle with exercise and/or sleep to achieve better health and well-being. This study was performed to understand if there is a relationship between exercise and …

Student Capstone Papers
Background: About 61 million adults who live in the United States (US) have a disability, which equates to about one in four adults in the US (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2020). Unfortunately, only one out of every ten people who need assistive technology (AT) have access to the proper equipment, with lack of awareness of the devices being one of the causes (World Health Organization [WHO], 2018). It has been noted in literature that a lack of awareness exists amongst clinicians, coaches, & athletes regarding available adaptive equipment (AE) to support participation in adaptive sports ([AS] Bergem, …
