International Journal of Exercise Science
International Journal of Exercise Science 16(6): 1165-1181, 2023. Photobiomodulation (PBM) has ergogenic effects on aerobic and anaerobic efforts and may improve sports performance. As Brazilian jiu-jitsu (BJJ) fighting requires both aerobic and anaerobic metabolism, so PBM may be effective in increasing the physical performance of BJJ athletes. Thus, this study aimed to verify the effects of PBM with different energy doses (6 or 12 J per point) on high-intensity intermittent anaerobic performance in BJJ athletes. Methods: Eleven male athletes performed three lower limb Wingate testing sessions. At the beginning of each session, in a randomized, crossover, double-blind fashion, the athletes …

While searching for a summer internship, Victoria Fischetti, a May 2023 graduate of Gardner-Webb University, hadn’t thought about using Tik Tok. On the team bus back to campus after a lacrosse game, she was passing the time by scrolling through the social media app. “A video came up listing all the different websites where you could find a job in sports,” Fischetti described. “So, I started looking through the websites and on TeamWorkOnline.com, I saw the posting and filled out my application right away.”

Prevalence Of Adulteration In Dietary Supplements And Recommendations For Safe Supplement Practices In Sport, Andrew R. Jagim, Patrick Harty, Jacob L. Erickson, Grant M. Tinsley, Dan Garner, Andrew J. Galpin
Prevalence Of Adulteration In Dietary Supplements And Recommendations For Safe Supplement Practices In Sport, Andrew R. Jagim, Patrick Harty, Jacob L. Erickson, Grant M. Tinsley, Dan Garner, Andrew J. Galpin
Faculty Scholarship
The prevalence of dietary supplement use among athletes continues to rise with 60–80% of athletes often reporting current or previous use of dietary supplements. While select dietary ingredients have been shown to improve acute performance and enhance training adaptations over time, it is important to still consider the risk vs. reward for athletes before opting to consume a dietary supplement. Previous work has indicated that certain dietary supplements may pose risks for inadvertent doping, may be susceptible to mislabelling, could be banned by certain governing bodies of sport, or pose health risks for certain populations. The purpose of the current …

Effects Of Two Exercise Programs On Neck Proprioception In Patients With Chronic Neck Pain: A Preliminary Randomized Clinical Trial, Leila Rahnama, Mark Daniel Geil
Faculty Articles
Background: The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of specific neck muscle training and general neck-shoulder exercises on neck proprioception, pain, and disability in patients with chronic non-specific neck pain. Methods: Twenty-five patients with chronic non-specific neck pain were recruited into this preliminary single-blinded randomized clinical trial. They were randomly assigned to either a specific neck exercise (n = 13, mean aged 24 years) or a general neck exercise group (n = 12, mean aged 25 years). Specific neck exercises included eye-head coordination and isometric deep neck muscle exercises. General neck exercises included neck and shoulder free …

With Name, Image, And Likeness, College Sports Enters The Gig Economy, Sam C. Ehrlich, Joe Sabin, Neal C. Ternes
Management Faculty Publications and Presentations
With the arrival of name, image, and likeness (NIL), the college sports labor market has distinctly taken on similar characteristics to the gig economy, with athletes able to earn extra compensation through external NIL-based independent contractor “gigs.” But with this comparison comes comparable issues, and scholarship and litigation examining and challenging gig economy structures have identified several legal and ethical concerns both individual to each worker and more broadly affecting labor markets. Building off this literature, we conceptualize the NIL phenomenon within the gig economy space, exploring the legal and ethical concerns that have plagued companies like Uber and applying …
