African American Clergy's Attitude Toward Professional Mental Health Services, Ebony Gaffney
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Evaluating the attitude of African American clergy toward parishioners seeking professional mental health services for mental illness has important treatment implications. Religion and spirituality are equally important determinants of mental health and can affect African American clergy's attitudes toward professional care for mental illness. Utilizing the health belief model (HBM), this quantitative study examined the role of theological beliefs, education, and personal experience with mental illness as they correlated with clergy's attitudes toward seeking professional mental illness services. Approximately 98 African American Protestant Clergy in the states of Georgia and South Carolina participated in this study. Data were collected using …

Examining The Connection Between Spirituality And Embodiment In Medical Education, Katie Bellamy
Creative Arts Therapies Theses
The purpose of this study was to explore and analyze the experience of spirituality for students of Western medicine as reflected in writing assignments for an elective course on embodiment and empathy building skills. Questions included: What is the relationship between embodiment and spirituality for students of Western medicine? How does (re-)embodiment lead to reflections on spirituality? Does mind-body awareness lead to mind-body-spirit awareness? How can incorporation of embodiment techniques into physician training foster spirituality as it relates to physicians’ professional healing roles? Based in a constructivist paradigm, this study used a qualitative grounded theory methodology to generate theory about …

Case Study On Spirituality In Senior Center Education: Qualitative Research In Adult Education, Laura E. Demarse
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
The purpose of this qualitative case study was to understand the deeply personal role of spirituality in adult education as seen through teaching senior citizens and examined the personal manifestation of spirituality through the life experiences of five adult educators. The research questions examined how the participants implement spirituality in their teaching practice, principally informed by their personal definitions of spirituality and how these personal experiences of spirituality influence and shape their work as adult educators. The case study used non-participant observation and semi-structured interviews, which provide the narratives that inform the basis of this study.
Hierarchy And Exclusion: The Construction And Maintenance Of Order In First-Generation Puritan Massachusetts, 1630-1660, Scott Roth
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
In 1630, a company of English Puritans established Massachusetts Bay Colony and, in doing so, the settlement that offered a foundation for life in Colonial New England. Facing great change, the colony's leadership developed religious, economic, political and social devices to maintain control throughout the transition, thereby establishing a strict order that permeated the lives of all who settled. Those who sought to transcend their place in this order faced discipline in various ways, though the General Court doled out these punishments unevenly. The inconsistency of application of these devices allowed for progress in some areas but restricted growth in …

The Initiation Of Growth-Focused Relationships Involving Healthy Accountability, Stephen L. Shaffer
The Initiation Of Growth-Focused Relationships Involving Healthy Accountability, Stephen L. Shaffer
Discernment: Theology and the Practice of Ministry
This paper summarizes a Doctor of Ministry project thesis conducted in 2011 that introduced healthy accountability within growth-focused relationships to shape an emergent spiritual growth culture at the Carbondale Church of Christ. The theological basis for the intervention (1) uses Romans 12 to establish the Christian community, not the individual, as the ultimate vision of fully realized human life and (2) asserts that spiritual growth, following Alasdair MacIntyre’s definition of a practice, must involve virtues such that the means of growth are reflective of the desired ends of growth. The positive results demonstrate the effectiveness of healthy accountability, illuminate participants' …

Culturally Responsive Contexts: Establishing Relationships For Inclusion, Mere Berryman, Therese Ford, Ann Nevin, Suzanne Soohoo
Education Faculty Articles and Research
As our education systems become more culturally, ethnically and linguistically diverse, rather than benefiting and learning from each other, we still expect all students to be represented within the same curriculum, pedagogy and testing regimen or we form separate enclaves resulting in marginalizaton. When diverse students have physical and/or learning disabilities, marginalization is further exacerbated and problematized. In this paper, the authors theorise within an alternative framework that we have termed relational and culturally responsive inclusion. Based on key understandings from our own research, much of it derived from Kaupapa Māori and Freirean philosophies, we encourage a framework where establishing …

Deification, Friendship, And Self-Knowledge, Matthew Hale
Deification, Friendship, And Self-Knowledge, Matthew Hale
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
How does human friendship contribute to the process of deification? In this thesis, I will argue that a kind of “spiritual friendship” contributes to the process of deification by placing the human agent in a better position for acquiring self-knowledge, and avoiding false beliefs or misunderstandings about the self. This acquisition of self-knowledge is an important part of the deification process, which involves not just a moral and ontological transformation, but an epistemological one as well.
Six Principles To Consider When Working With Roman Catholic Clients, Thomas G. Plante
Six Principles To Consider When Working With Roman Catholic Clients, Thomas G. Plante
Psychology
Although the majority of Americans consider themselves to be Christian and affiliated with various Protestant denominations, a quarter of the American population identify themselves as Roman Catholics who are the largest single religious denomination in the country. Yet, surprisingly, fairly little research has been published in the professional psychology literature about working with this very large and diverse group. Psychologists have an ethical responsibility to be aware of and respectful to diversity including diversity based on religious background, affiliation, and perspectives. The purpose of this brief reflection is to offer 6 important principles to keep in mind for professional psychologists …

Development Of A Multiscale Internal State Variable Inelasticity-Corrosion Damage Model For Magnesium Alloys, Weiwei Song
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation proposes a multiscale Internal State Variable (ISV) inelasticity-corrosion damage model that is motivated by experimental microstructure-property relations of magnesium alloys. The corrosion damage framework was laid out based on observation of different corrosion mechanisms occurred on an extruded AM30 magnesium alloys. The extruded AM30 magnesium alloy was studied under two corrosion environments (cyclical salt spray and immersion) in order to observe the corrosion rates under different exposure environments. The coupons were examined at various times to determine the history effects of three corrosion mechanisms: (1) general corrosion; (2) pitting corrosion in terms of the nucleation rate, growth rate, …

Religious Landscape And Ecological Ethics: Pilgrimage To The Lithuanian Calvaries, Darius Liutikas
Religious Landscape And Ecological Ethics: Pilgrimage To The Lithuanian Calvaries, Darius Liutikas
International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage
This article deals with the ecology of pilgrimage at the Calvaries – Ways of the Cross – in Lithuania. Personal obligations to nature and respect of sacred place intermingle with devotional practices and certain rituals. Large scale arrivals at the Calvaries only occurs at certain times of year, mostly during the Indulgence Feasts. Devotional practices such as meditation on the suffering of Christ, prayers and hymns, playing musical instruments, washing one’s face at the Cedron spring are quite common during the Way. Research shows that walking the Way of the Cross doesn’t cause negative environmental, cultural and social impacts. Moreover, …

All Theses And Dissertations
This dissertation examined the postcrisis intervention preferences of a purposeful sample of 23 Resident Directors from 17 Catholic colleges and universities in New England. Using survey and interview data, this study explored whether Resident Directors at the sample institution had preferences regarding services they needed following exposure to a student death and whether these support preferences were aligned with the Catholic identities of their institutions. The research questions that guided this study were: (a) How do Resident Directors at Catholic colleges and universities describe their roles as first responders during a campus crisis?, (b) How do Resident Directors at Catholic …

Ideology, The Counterculture, And The Avant Garde: Positioning The Filmmaker And The Spectator In Four Films Of Late-1960s America, Mary Bronstein Cantoral
College of Communication Theses and Dissertations
Kenneth Anger’s Invocation of My Demon Brother (1969), Emile de Antonio’s In the Year of the Pig (1968), Jonas Mekas’s Diaries, Notes, and Sketches: Also Known as Walden (1969) and Haskell Wexler’s Medium Cool (1969) constitute historical artifacts as well as discursive interventions intended to shape a vision of the nation. Therein emerged varying imbrications of ideology and the volatility of the era, along with palpable disharmony that scholars have identified between the youth movement’s cultural and political camps.1 In each case, the film’s avant-garde status did not, in and of itself, confer liberatory ideology. While all but Medium …
Spirituality And The Sense Of Self: An Inductive Analysis, Louis F. Kavar
Spirituality And The Sense Of Self: An Inductive Analysis, Louis F. Kavar
The Qualitative Report
The investigation examined the understanding of spirituality as related to the sense of self. Self-reports from semi-structured interviews of participants with a stated value for spirituality are analyzed inductively. Using a Rogerian understanding of self, the analysis identified six themes related to how participants understand spirituality as related to their sense of self. The themes demonstrate that spirituality is a key dimension to self understanding and is part of relationships, social engagement, an understanding of meaning and purpose in life, and an overall sense of happiness and joy.

Oscar Romero And The Resurgence Of Liberationist Thought, William David Mccorkle
Oscar Romero And The Resurgence Of Liberationist Thought, William David Mccorkle
All Theses
While the slain El Salvadorian archbishop, Oscar Romero, was not necessarily a liberation theologian, he embodied the teachings of liberation theology seen in the work of the Conference of Latin American Bishops and the writings of Gustavo Gutiérrez while also moderating some of the more radical interpretations of the theology. Despite the strong opposition to liberation theology from the Vatican and conservative church officials, Romero's life and legacy has helped keep the core ideas of the theology alive by serving as an example of a more peaceful version of liberationist thought. Because of his 'martyrdom' and his subsequent iconic status …
