Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem. This project report addresses the problem of lack of practicum of a spiritual formation for students at the seminary of Collonges-sous-Saleve, France.

Method. The project report is developed in four stages as follows: First, it investigates how spirituality was approached in the Roman Catholic as well as the mainline Protestant milieu. Second, it explores the Seventh-day Adventist background of spirituality. Third, it focuses on the Pastoral Epistles with regard to Paul's spiritual concerns for the leaders of the church. An Exploration Of A.A.'S Twelve Step Spirituality For The Purpose Of Communicating A Right Understanding Of Law And Gospel To Recovering Lutheran Alcoholics, Gary Galen Oct 1992

An Exploration Of A.A.'S Twelve Step Spirituality For The Purpose Of Communicating A Right Understanding Of Law And Gospel To Recovering Lutheran Alcoholics, Gary Galen

Doctor of Ministry Major Applied Project

This study addresses presenting Law and Gospel to recovering Lutheran alcoholics in the Twelve Step program of Alcoholics Anonymous. The Twelve Steps offer a spirituality which has often caused confusion among confessional Lutherans. This involved interviewing recovering Lutheran alcoholics, non-alcoholic Lutherans and clergy. The Twelve Steps were evaluated according to Law and Gospel. A brief study of the influence of American Civil Religion and Two Kingdom Theology gave a backdrop in which to place the Twelve Steps. Practical ways in which pastors and congregations could better minister to recovering Lutheran alcoholics were included.

The Most Dangerous Pest: "Homo Environmentals", Robert James Bidinotto

Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 15th (1992)

I speak of that insatiable predator, Homo environmentalus. This predator is a subspecies of homo sapiens, of which I observe several examples present. For the past several years, under special funding by Reader's Digest, I have made a special study of this pest, also known by his more familiar name of "environmentalist activist."

The Spirituality Of Louise De Marillac: Formed By The Spirit For Charity, Louise Sullivan D.C. Oct 1991

The Spirituality Of Louise De Marillac: Formed By The Spirit For Charity, Louise Sullivan D.C.

Vincentian Studies

This article presents “a spiritual portrait” of Louise de Marillac as reconstructed from Vincent’s letters to her and explores her prayer life using her writings. After 1623, Louise went on a complex and difficult journey of faith that was shaped by her temperament, her experience, and her time. She was extremely intelligent and capable, but also needed frequent spiritual reassurance, which Vincent de Paul provided throughout their relationship. However, she was well educated in the Bible and in spiritual practices before she met him. Her beginning was ascetic, with a demanding prayer schedule. Such discipline was related to her self-doubt. …

A Woman Named Louise: 1591-1633, Kieran Kneaves D.C. Oct 1991

A Woman Named Louise: 1591-1633, Kieran Kneaves D.C.

Vincentian Studies

This very detailed and personal life of Louise de Marillac describes her family history, childhood, education, marriage, and motherhood. It explores her time of doubt and its resolution. The article recounts the evolution of her relationship and collaboration with Vincent de Paul, culminating in the establishment of the Daughters of Charity. Specific attention is paid to her role as “a mystic in action.” Louise was strongly influenced by the Rheno-Flemish mystics.

"God Is My God": The Generative Integrity Of Louise De Marillac, Vie Thorgren Oct 1991

"God Is My God": The Generative Integrity Of Louise De Marillac, Vie Thorgren

Vincentian Studies

Psychology and spiritual theology are used in this personal reflection on Louise de Marillac’s generative integrity. Christian generativity is fulfilling others’ needs and doing God’s will without any expectation of return or even success. Louise had trouble trusting God, herself, and others because she lacked nurturing in her early childhood. She was able to overcome this through her friendship with Vincent de Paul and “her unique relationship with the generative Jesus.” These two elements enabled her to become generative herself. She wanted to imitate the hidden life of Jesus by doing God’s will, unseen by all but God. Author Vie …

Collaborative Ministries Within The Vincentian Family, Shaun Mccarty S.T. Oct 1991

Collaborative Ministries Within The Vincentian Family, Shaun Mccarty S.T.

Vincentian Studies

Collaboration is part of the legacy of Louise de Marillac and Vincent de Paul. Shaun McCarty discusses exactly what collaboration means in the context of the Vincentian Family and how it should be pursued. He particularly emphasizes reciprocity and cooperative planning and discernment. Since each group within the Vincentian Family has its own focus, each has something unique to contribute to collaborative ministries. Readers are invited to imagine the future of these ministries through an exercise for reflecting on collaborative efforts. This is part of the vital discernment process, which is explored in detail in the rest of the article. …
