Spiritual Interventions In Psychotherapy: A Survey Of The Practices And Beliefs Of Amcap Members, P. Scott Richards, Richard W. Potts Apr 1995

Spiritual Interventions In Psychotherapy: A Survey Of The Practices And Beliefs Of Amcap Members, P. Scott Richards, Richard W. Potts

Issues in Religion and Psychotherapy

Three hundred members of the Association of Mormon Counselors and Psychotherapists (AMCAP) were randomly selected and asked about their use of spiritual interventions in their professional work. Two hundred and fifteen (72%) AMCAP members responded to the survey and indicated that they use a wide variety of spiritual interventions. Praying silently for clients, teaching spiritual concepts, encouraging forgiveness, using the religious community as a support, and encouraging clients to pray were used much more frequently than were priesthood blessing by therapists, praying with clients, and asking clients to memorize scriptures. Critical incident case examples provided by the therapists revealed that …

The Use Of Referrals For Therapeutic Counseling By Catholic Parish Priests And The Implications For Clinical Social Workers, Mary Anne Zapor Jan 1995

The Use Of Referrals For Therapeutic Counseling By Catholic Parish Priests And The Implications For Clinical Social Workers, Mary Anne Zapor

Theses Digitization Project

This positivist research design project focused on the question: How do parish priests deal with people who are in need of therapeutic counseling? Central to this study was the hypothesis, that priests refer people to professionals, when there is no conflict expected between values and morals of the church and the values and moral of the professional therapist.

Ex Machina: Electronic Resources For The Classics, Beth Juhl

University Libraries Faculty Publications and Presentations

This essay aims to provide an overview of electronic resources for the study and teaching of classics—including Greek and Latin languages and literature, philosophy, religion, art and archaeology, and ancient history—with particular emphasis on the tools most useful for a library collection serving an undergraduate clientele. Most of this discussion is devoted to CD-ROMs and other soft ware that are available for purchase, lease, or subscription. A short section at the end of the essay summarizes resources available on the Internet. There are a great many ingenious and entertaining programs for language teaching and drill, and numerous customized Greek and …

Enthusiasm And Charismatic Manifestations In Sabbatarian Adventism With Applications For The Seventh-Day Adventist Church Of The Late Twentieth Church, James Michael Wilson

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Task

It was the purpose of this study to discover what charismatic manifestations were extant among the Sabbatarian Adventists and to determine why those manifestations deceased. This information was then analyzed in the light of the Seventh-day Adventist Church of the late twentieth century in order to find ways of stimulating spirituality and a healthy approach to the Holy Spirit and charismatic manifestations.

Method

The historical section of this project focused on the charismatic manifestations and enthusiasm of the Sabbatarian Adventists between the Great Disappointment of 1844 and the development in formal organization in 1861. The types of experiences of …

Enlisting Volunteers In Ministry, Jerry Louis Fore Jan 1995

Enlisting Volunteers In Ministry, Jerry Louis Fore

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem

Involving church members in ministry annually challenges church leaders. To meet this demand within the Seventh-day Adventist church, a committee typically nominates church members to fill prescribed offices—places of need. Filling offices, however, too often causes a committee to overlook some people or to mismatch interests, talents, and tasks.

Method

While serving the Kansas City Central Church as senior pastor, I introduced a Bible-based process to involve members' gifts and talents in ministry. Using trained interviewers in this one-year pilot project, members became involved after matching their talents and interests with tasks. After the church approved the project, I …

Sons Of Writ, Sons Of Wrath: Pierre Legendre’S Critique Of Rational Law-Giving, Anton Schutz Jan 1995

Sons Of Writ, Sons Of Wrath: Pierre Legendre’S Critique Of Rational Law-Giving, Anton Schutz

Cardozo Law Review

By nature we have been sons of wrath, according to a thoroughly explored passage of Pauline theology. I should like to put this text to a test. My purpose in this article is to view the work of a twentieth-century Sorbonne Professor of Law through the lens of this Pauline text. Clearly, such a procedure assumes some sort of extraordinary similarity of preoccupation as between these two thinkers. It assumes that the semantic components, filius and ira, and the question of their relationship, are equally crucial to both figures: to the fervent apostle and epistolographer who happened to have …

Vincentian Seminaries In Louisiana (1), John E. Rybolt C.M., Ph.D. Oct 1994

Vincentian Seminaries In Louisiana (1), John E. Rybolt C.M., Ph.D.

Vincentian Studies

This is the first of two studies on Vincentian seminaries in Louisiana. “The Ecclesiastical Seminary of Saint Vincent of Paul,” located in Bayou LaFourche, opened in November 1838 after about a decade of discussion. The Vincentians had initially refused to direct it because of the financial burden it would place on them and because of possible disruption to their existing seminary at the Barrens in Perryville, Missouri. However, John Timon accepted it because educating candidates for the priesthood was a Vincentian work. The circumstances of the seminary’s founding are recounted in detail. The seminary’s life, curriculum, faculty, and finances are …

Faith Decisions: Christian Initiation For Children Of The Glenwood Church Of Christ, Tommy W. King May 1994

Faith Decisions: Christian Initiation For Children Of The Glenwood Church Of Christ, Tommy W. King

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to produce a program of instruction and events that will facilitate the initiation of children of the Glenwood Church of Christ into the full fellowship of the church. The project begins by identifying the problem of an imprecise definition of the status of children within Churches of Christ and how this uncertainty affects the process of initiating children of the church. The project continues by avowing the innocence of all children while recognizing a difference existing between children of the church and those outside the sphere of the church. The difference is community. Those …

Contemporary Religious Life: Death Or Transformation?, Sandra Marie Schneiders Jan 1994

Contemporary Religious Life: Death Or Transformation?, Sandra Marie Schneiders

Jesuit School of Theology

No one who attends carefully to the present experience of religious life in North America can be entirely sanguine about its present or its future. Despite the celebratory character of this gathering (and certainly the twenty-five year work of the Institute for Religious is something to celebrate) we are all aware of the signs of diminishment that mark contemporary religious life: aging membership, decline in recruitment, dwindling financial resources in the face of relentlessly rising costs, loss of institutions, if we attend only to the material problems. When these are compounded by ecclesiastical harassment of individual members in their ministries …
