Food Security And The Sustainable Livelihood Approach To Development In Uganda, Megan Jessup-Varnum May 2018

Food Security And The Sustainable Livelihood Approach To Development In Uganda, Megan Jessup-Varnum

University Honors Theses

Food security is a growing global issue. Poverty and malnutrition kill millions of people worldwide every year. Sub-Saharan Africa has the highest rates of poverty and malnutrition in the world. Previous development strategies in sub-Saharan Africa that have attempted to alleviate poverty and eradicate malnutrition have proved unsuccessful. However, there is a fairly new approach to development, known as the sustainable livelihood approach that tackles issues of poverty, malnutrition, and food security in a holistic way. This paper explores the sustainable livelihood approach to development and it’s effectiveness. This paper focuses on a health clinic and rabbit breeding program in …

The Society For Industrial And Organizational Psychology’S Guidelines For Education And Training: An Executive Summary Of The 2016/2017 Revision, Jennifer Lee Gibson, Stephanie C. Payne, Whitney Botsford Morgan, Joseph A. Allen

Psychology Faculty Publications

The Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology (SIOP, Division 14 of the American Psychological Association [APA]) maintains Guidelines for Education and Training to provide guidance for the training of industrial-organizational (I-O) psychologists. The 2016/2017 revision combines separate documents for master’s- and doctoral-level training into one document, because the competencies required for each degree are not very different. Instead, the degrees differ in breadth and depth. The updated Guidelines were approved as APA policy in August 2017. In this article, we briefly review the revision process and highlight the updates made in the latest version of the Guidelines. (PsycINFO Database Record …

From Travellers To Activist Global Citizens? Practitioner Reflections On An Activist/Volunteer Tourist Project, Sameena Dalwai, Brendan Donegan May 2018

From Travellers To Activist Global Citizens? Practitioner Reflections On An Activist/Volunteer Tourist Project, Sameena Dalwai, Brendan Donegan

Journal of Tourism Consumption and Practice

Where their parents sought an essentially passive observation of the exotic while "roughing it‟ on foot and in sleeper class, a new generation of young travellers from the global North seek authentic experience in the global South through opportunities to actively engage with the realities of poverty-stricken slums as volunteer tourists. Free of their conventional social ties and uninhibited in their attempts to carve out new global citizen roles for themselves, the youths experience a bonding „communitas‟ with each other, and when they return home their social status is raised in the eyes of employers and peers. This paper focuses …

Another Space: Gleaning The Urban Littoral, Les Roberts

Journal of Tourism Consumption and Practice

Another Space is a short ethnographic film about artist Antony Gormley‟s installation „Another Place‟ at Crosby Beach north of Liverpool. The visuals, shot on a visit to the beach in Easter 2009, are cut to a mosaic of voices drawn from interviews conducted with visitors to the beach. Respondents are asked what the artwork means to them and what feelings and emotions it evokes. This article, written as an accompaniment to the film, as well as to Hazel Andrew‟s study published in the edited volume Liminal Landscapes: Travel, Experience, and Spaces In-between (2012), provides an auto-ethnographic reflection on the installation …

Several methods are used to trace cultural transfer between countries. The time-honoured methods are chronicles of early travellers and archaeology. We can also look to epigraphs and loan words. Present-day ethnic communities also suggest earlier settlements. Edward B. Tylor proposed the world distribution of games as anthropological evidence. Tylor's method combined with an archaeology into the Everyday provides evidence of earlier cultural transfer and present-day applications of the game enables analysis to draw socio-cultural knowledge of inter-ethnic, inter-cultural reception to foreign influences in host societies.

Gun Violence Is Not An “Inner City” Problem, Jeffrey A. Butts

Publications and Research

Policy debates about gun violence often focus on cities. This data bit showed how 33 states in the U.S. compare regarding gun violence rates, demonstrated how gun violence rates are not an issue exclusive to cities, and tested whether states conform to the conventional narrative of "urban gun violence."

Teacher Decision-Making: Using Hypothetical Vignettes To Examine The Course Recommendation Process, Philip E. Bernhardt May 2018

Teacher Decision-Making: Using Hypothetical Vignettes To Examine The Course Recommendation Process, Philip E. Bernhardt

Journal of Educational Research and Practice

Academic tracking is common in American schools. While the impact of this practice on students is well documented, few studies closely examine the influence of teacher decision-making on students’ academic trajectories. This article discusses a study examining how teachers recommend students for high- and low-track academic classes. Specific attention is paid to data collected through participant analysis of hypothetical vignettes. This unique methodology was specifically designed to illuminate the dynamics shaping participants’ decision-making process. The key finding of this study is that participants experienced high levels of autonomy when making recommendations. This autonomy, however, did not emanate from recognition of …

Reducing Feelings Of Marginalization For Black Students, Jacob Roberson May 2018

Reducing Feelings Of Marginalization For Black Students, Jacob Roberson

Arts & Sciences Student Symposium

As if they do not belong, black students attending predominantly white institutions nationwide all deal with feelings of marginalization on their respective campuses. At the University of Richmond, such feelings of "otherness" hold true. Though the current president of the University, as well as presidents past, has instituted "strategic plans" that include goals of flourishing diversity and inclusion "for all," black students at the University, before and still today, do not feel their presence is welcomed or valued on campus. Herein lie suggestions on how to improve cultural awareness and knowledge for non-black students and non-black faculty in hopes that …

Illness, Injury And Medical Deportations At The Frontier: The Canadian Legal Regime For Health Care Protections For Agricultural Migrant Workers, Constance Macintosh May 2018

Illness, Injury And Medical Deportations At The Frontier: The Canadian Legal Regime For Health Care Protections For Agricultural Migrant Workers, Constance Macintosh

Articles, Book Chapters, & Popular Press

This paper explores how health interests and rights play out in the temporary agricultural worker regime. In particular, it illustrates how a system that–as discussed below–is formally positioned as granting such workers the same rights as nationals, may not in practice provide equivalent or meaningful protections. The assessment is not just about the social exclusion challenges that often undermine the ability or possibility of migrant workers to activate their legal rights (which is the usual critique of why post-national citizenship writing is overly optimistic), but about how the legal and regulatory system itself misses the mark.

Initiation Of Sexual Behaviour And Early Childbearing: Poverty And The Gendered Nature Of Responsibility Amongst Young People In South Africa, Monde Makiwane, Ntombizonke A. Gumede, Lien Molobela May 2018

Initiation Of Sexual Behaviour And Early Childbearing: Poverty And The Gendered Nature Of Responsibility Amongst Young People In South Africa, Monde Makiwane, Ntombizonke A. Gumede, Lien Molobela

Journal of International Women's Studies

Childbearing is an important life course event and a decision to give birth has significant implication in contemporary society, especially if it occurs before the completion of schooling and predating the start of being gainfully employed. Globally, teenage pregnancy is more common among young people who have been disadvantaged in childhood and have low expectations of education or opportunities in the job market. Literature shows that youth living in poverty have higher teen pregnancy rate than the average population. Socio-economic circumstances seem to play a major role in the rates of teen pregnancy. Poor access to contraception and inconsistent or …

A Theoretical Perspective On Women And Poverty In Botswana, Gwen N. Lesetedi May 2018

A Theoretical Perspective On Women And Poverty In Botswana, Gwen N. Lesetedi

Journal of International Women's Studies

Botswana has made remarkable progress in terms of economic and social development. The position of the government is that policies and programmes should benefit all citizens equally. More specifically, the government of Botswana has recognised women’s role in economic development and efforts have been made to integrate gender in the development process. Access to economic opportunities for everyone to development is an overall goal clearly stated in the various national development plans, policies and programmes. Gender plays a major role in the formulation and implementation of these intervention strategies. For instance, the National Gender Programme Framework implemented and monitored by …

Women And Renewable Energy In A South African Community: Exploring Energy Poverty And Environmental Racism, Khayaat Fakier May 2018

Women And Renewable Energy In A South African Community: Exploring Energy Poverty And Environmental Racism, Khayaat Fakier

Journal of International Women's Studies

This paper argues that the rights of women to be included in decisions about energy use and their experiences with energy use are ignored. Using an eco-feminist perspective this article explores how the rhetoric of ‘renewable energy for the poor’ which bypasses women’s voices and experience in domestic uses of renewable energy result in reverse outcomes of pro-environmental policy for the poor, as well as, for society in general. Drawing on semi-structured interviews with 20 women in Lwandle, in South Africa, the article identifies three themes reflecting on how the women experience the installation of solar water heaters. The first …

Gender Differences In Water Access And Household Welfare Among Smallholder Irrigators In Msinga Local Municipality, South Africa, Sithembile A. Sinyolo, Sikhulumile Sinyolo, Maxwell Mudhara, Catherine Ndinda

Journal of International Women's Studies

This study investigates the gender differences in water access and its welfare effects using a sample of 291 irrigators from two irrigation schemes in the Msinga Local Municipality, South Africa. The data were analysed using the Blinder Oaxaca (BO) decomposition method and the instrumental variable (IV) regression approach. The study findings highlight unequal access to irrigation water between male and female farmers, with women accessing irrigation water more frequently than women. The results also indicate a positive and significant effect of water access on incomes per capita, and that men had higher welfare than women. The results suggest that women …

Determinants Of Female’S Employment Outcomes In Vietnam, Ngo Quynh An, Yamada Kazuyo May 2018

Determinants Of Female’S Employment Outcomes In Vietnam, Ngo Quynh An, Yamada Kazuyo

Journal of International Women's Studies

In the context of reducing female labor demand and restructuring female work in integration, determinants of women's employment are studied using data of 2010 VHLSS with 11,085 women aged 15 and older who were working in the Vietnamese labor market. The economic and care needs, values and opportunities of women working are important. At the region-level, economic development and equality will give women opportunities for better work. Women's education and training clearly take a key position. The analysis shows the effect of education and training are strongest and positive for women with employment in the group of "Leaders, managers, and …

Gender, Poverty And Inequality In The Aftermath Of Zimbabwe’S Land Reform: A Transformative Social Policy Perspective, Newman Tekwa, Jimi Adesina May 2018

Gender, Poverty And Inequality In The Aftermath Of Zimbabwe’S Land Reform: A Transformative Social Policy Perspective, Newman Tekwa, Jimi Adesina

Journal of International Women's Studies

Gender equality is re-emerging as an important global and national agenda with emphasis placed on closing the gender gap in terms of women’s representation in public and private decision-making bodies. Though unrelatedly, the period had coincided with the elevation of social protection in the form of cash transfers as the magic bullet in tackling gendered poverty and inequality. Adopting a Transformative Social Policy Framework and land reform as a social policy instrument, the paper questions the efficacy of the current approaches in transforming gendered poverty and inequalities. Land reform is hardly ever assessed as a policy instrument for its redistributive, …

Ideological Inequalities: Khmer Culture And Widows’ Perception Of Remarriage, Susan Hagood Lee May 2018

Ideological Inequalities: Khmer Culture And Widows’ Perception Of Remarriage, Susan Hagood Lee

Journal of International Women's Studies

To explain the enduring persistence of gender inequality, structural explanations alone are not sufficient. One must look at the realm of cultural ideas to understand the entrenched nature of female subordination. Ideological inequalities embedded in cultural beliefs and practices sustain and perpetuate structural inequalities. This article explores ideological inequalities in Cambodian culture as an explanation for the reluctance of rural widows to remarry, despite the economic benefits that a new husband would likely bring. Using concepts from the theory of the social construction of reality, two cultural sources for widows' reluctance are considered, the beliefs and practices of Khmer Buddhism …

Race,Space And Education's Place, Tiasha Rogers May 2018

Race,Space And Education's Place, Tiasha Rogers

Creative Collaborations: Annual Showcase of Undergraduate Research

Juvenile delinquency is critically mediated by the intersection of race, space and education's place. This paper explores the centrality of race, space and education's central place in creating/reproducing juvenile delinquency, or fostering agency-laden education in areas of spatially and racially concentrated neighborhood disadvantage. My main focus is the extent to which education creates/reproduces juvenile delinquency or fosters agency among young people. My goals is to explore how juvenile delinquency can be decreased through improving educational systems in these communities. To this end, I explore the literature on juvenile delinquency, questions of agency and social struggles over education.
