Filipino Service Care Providers' Experience Of Compassion Fatigue While Working In Residential Care Facilities, Leizel Cerezo-Pann
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
The purpose of this study is to explore Filipino service care providers’ experience of compassion fatigue. Compassion fatigue is a common experience among health care professionals and can contribute to feelings of hopelessness and adverse behaviors in caring for patients. In California, there are a large number of Filipinos who are employed as care providers for older adults; however, there is limited research available regarding Filipino workers in the United States. This study took on a qualitative design that utilized face-to-face interviews to gain more insight into Filipino service care providers’ experience of compassion fatigue in relation to their employment. …
Third, Fourth, And Fifth Grade Teachers’ Experiences With Academic Parental Involvement At Denied-Accreditation Elementary Schools In Virginia: A Phenomenological Study, Allison Knappenberger
Third, Fourth, And Fifth Grade Teachers’ Experiences With Academic Parental Involvement At Denied-Accreditation Elementary Schools In Virginia: A Phenomenological Study, Allison Knappenberger
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this transcendental, phenomenological study was to understand third, fourth, and fifth grade teachers’ experiences with academic parental involvement at denied-accreditation elementary schools. Parent involvement refers to two-way communication between parents and teachers. Denied accreditation refers to schools scoring below 70% on state assessments for four or more consecutive years. The theories guiding this study were the Getzels and Guba (1957) social systems theory and Bakhtin’s (1986) theory of dialogism as they influence teachers’ experiences of academic parental involvement through socio-psychological and dialogic environmental interactions. The research questions for this study included: How do third, fourth, and fifth …
A Model Of The Process African American Adolescents Use To Integrate Their Bilingual Identity With Their Overall Identity In A Foreign Language Immersion Environment: A Grounded Theory Study, Kim Romero
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this grounded theory study was to develop a model that illustrates how African American adolescents in a foreign language immersion environment integrate their bilingual identity with their overall identity. For this study, bilingualism is defined as the ability to use two languages for academic and/or business purposes. I used multiple interviews, focus groups, questionnaires, and journals to collect data. The most important part of the identity integration process for African American adolescents in a foreign language immersion environment is choice. The loss of choice caused conflicts during the identity negotiation process. The participants perceived their bilingual identity …
A Strategy For The Church Growth Through The Development Of Senior-Friendly Pastoral Ministries: The Case Of The Senior Ministry At Shinlim Central Church In Korea, Hoo Sik Kim
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this study is to suggest the necessity of and alternative strategies for senior-friendly pastoral care to achieve sustained church growth amid the growing phenomenon of aging in Korean society. The recent aging of Korean society also has effects on changes in church members. As the ratio of senior members becomes increasingly high, pastoral alternative strategies for coping with it has also been urgently needed. The problem is that although this social phenomenon was already foreseen several years ago, there are insufficient practical strategies for pastoral care to deal with it.
The researcher first conducts biblical, theological, historical, …
Citizens Of The State, Maeve Glass
Citizens Of The State, Maeve Glass
University of Chicago Law Review
According to conventional wisdom, state citizenship emerged out of the localism of early America and gave way to national citizenship with the ratification of the Fourteenth Amendment. This Article offers a different account of state citizenship and, with it, new resources for analyzing the Constitution. It argues that far from a primordial category that receded into irrelevance, state citizenship provided a crucial strategic tool in America’s antislavery movement, as abolitionist lawyers used the label of state citizenship to build a coalition with white elites by reframing the issue of slavery from the rights of a black person to the sovereignty …

Library Presentations & Publications
Every other year, the ACRL Research Planning and Review Committee produces a document on top trends in higher education as they relate to academic librarianship. Topics in this edition of ACRL Top Trends will be familiar to some readers who will hopefully learn of new materials to expand their knowledge. Other readers will be made aware of trends that are outside of their experience. This is the nature of trends in our current technological and educational environments: change is continual, but it affects different libraries at different rates. The 2018 top trends share several overarching themes, including the impact of …

Implicit Bias's Failure, Samuel Bagenstos
Implicit Bias's Failure, Samuel Bagenstos
Articles
The 2016 presidential election was a coming-out party of sorts for the concept of implicit bias-and not necessarily in a good way. In answering a question about race relations and the police during the vice-presidential debate, Mike Pence introduced the topic. Offering his explanation for why the Fraternal Order of Police had endorsed the Trump-Pence ticket, Pence said:
Deconstructing Negative Stereotypes, Myths And Microaggressions About Black Women: Reconstructing Black Women’S Narrative, Identity And The Empowering Nature Of Ethnic Identity, Patricia Luckoo
Dissertations
This research study retraces the lives of Black women in America through a microscope that emphasize the historical formulation of Black women's identity and how the distorted figures of stereotypes have emerged and manifested into contemporary microaggressions. The work explores two central inquiries: The first, quantitative study, examines slavery as the malignant marker that has shaped Black women's identity, socioeconomic status, educational progress and political frameworks. The study theorizes that microaggressions towards Black women pose serious harm to their overall psychological sense of self-efficacy and empowerment. However, ethnic identity has within it the resource to combat microaggressive attitudes. The second, …

The Effects Of Peer Observation On Teacher Intervention Integrity, Garrett D. Warrilow
Dissertations
The observer effect is a term used to describe a process during which an observer's behavior changes as they measure the behavior of another individual. The observer effect has been widely studied in organizational behavior management but has limited research with teachers in schools. The current study sought to use the observer effect as part of a teacher training package by evaluating the effects of peer observations on an observing teacher's implementation integrity of components of a Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) system. Participants were four middle school teachers of students in general education classrooms. The primary dependent variables …
Ethnographic Advocacy Against The Death Penalty, Jesse Cheng
Ethnographic Advocacy Against The Death Penalty, Jesse Cheng
Social and Cultural Sciences Faculty Research and Publications
This article develops the concept of “ethnographic advocacy” to make sense of the humanizing, open‐ended knowledge practices involved in the defense of criminal defendants charged with capital murder. Drawing from anthropological fieldwork with well‐respected figures in the American capital defense bar, as well as my own professional experience as an investigator specializing in death penalty sentencing mitigation, I argue that effective advocacy for life occurs through qualitative knowledge practices that share notable methodological affinities with contemporary anthropological ethnography. The article concludes with a preliminary exploration of what the concept of ethnographic advocacy might reveal about academic anthropology's own advocative engagements.
Cultural Capital In Place-Making, C Mansfield
Cultural Capital In Place-Making, C Mansfield
Plymouth Business School
Innovative fieldwork research in cultural tourism is presented which is based around a detective novel set in a seaside town in France. The participants completed autoethnographic writing to provide insight into the active processes of value creation, experience creation, place-making and identity formation. The original research proposes a theory for the way that the literary language in the cultural artefact, in this case the realist novel, activates the tourist's cultural capital and thus affects behaviours. A new theoretical term is proposed, the toureme. The theory has applicability in other towns where novels are set and hence is useful for place-making. …
Students' Spiritual Integration Into Bible Colleges: A Grounded Theory Study, Brett Blount
Students' Spiritual Integration Into Bible Colleges: A Grounded Theory Study, Brett Blount
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this grounded theory study was to explain how undergraduate students integrate spiritually into Bible colleges in the Midwestern and Southeastern United States and discern the role spiritual integration plays in persistence. Spiritual integration of Bible college undergraduate students occurs when they perceive that their spirituality, whether possessed by them upon their enrollment and/or formed during their attendance, has aligned with the spiritual environment of their college and therefore have accepted their place in that environment. A total of 35 participants, 28 students and seven faculty members, were interviewed to obtain their perceptions of how students experience the …
The Development And Validation Of A Measure Of Beliefs About Sex And Spirituality, Brittany Lashua
The Development And Validation Of A Measure Of Beliefs About Sex And Spirituality, Brittany Lashua
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Spirituality and sexuality are related concepts that include sacredness and transcendence. When the spiritual concepts of sacredness and transcendence are the filter through which sexuality is understood, there are many positive benefits, including increased sexual and relationship satisfaction. Previous research has considered the concepts. However, little empirical work has addressed the idea of transcendence, spirituality, and sacredness without explicitly religious overtones. Previous measures that have considered spirituality and sexuality have been found lacking in the ability to capture the multidimensionality of sex fully and have utilized explicitly religious terminology that may not capture the experience of non-religious or spiritual individuals. …

Religiosity, Moral Disapproval, Shame And Pornography Use: Assessing The Relationship Between Shame And Sexual Behaviors, Ryan Carboneau
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Many compulsive and hypersexualized behaviors, including pornography use, have been associated with negative emotional, neurological, and psychosocial problems in a subset of users. Research showed that the constructs of shame, shame-proneness, and attachment may be related to the use of pornography as well as the theory of addiction. Shame-proneness is a construct that is consistently and positively associated with a variety of internalizing symptoms including depression, social, and generalized anxiety as well as a linked to an assortment of externalizing and risky behaviors such as anger, substance use, and criminal offending. Research suggested that higher levels of religiosity have a …

Spanish-Speaking Client-Worker Experiences At A California Child Welfare Agency, Koressa Castillo
Spanish-Speaking Client-Worker Experiences At A California Child Welfare Agency, Koressa Castillo
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
With the growing presence of Latino families across the United States, service providers must remain cognizant of this group’s unique sociocultural characteristics. Culturally competent service provision requires child welfare professionals to remain aware of the stressors often faced by this population. Immigration and acculturation issues, language and cultural barriers, poverty, discrimination, fear of deportation, and lack of access to a variety of services are a few of the stressors that are commonly experienced by this group. Linguistically competent practice requires service provision to be in a families’ native language; however, there are many other factors to consider even when doing …

College Choices Of Latina/O Students Attending A For-Profit College: Understanding Persistence And Retention, Cecilia Loftus Ornelas
College Choices Of Latina/O Students Attending A For-Profit College: Understanding Persistence And Retention, Cecilia Loftus Ornelas
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
Although Latina/os are the largest minority group in California and enrolling in higher education in record-breaking numbers (Zarate & Burciaga, 2010), the graduation rate of this group is very low (Kewal-Ramani, Gilbertson, Fox, & Provasnik, 2007). A phenomenological approach was used in this study to explore the lived experiences of Latina/o students at a for-profit college in the Inland Empire. Students from different major fields of study described how they explored and sought college information, how they experienced both community and for-profit colleges, and described their levels of sense of belonging in both community and for-profit colleges. Students shared their …
Social Service Workers Knowledge On The Use Of Technology For Human Trafficking, Raquel Monique Holguin, Athena Noel Barber
Social Service Workers Knowledge On The Use Of Technology For Human Trafficking, Raquel Monique Holguin, Athena Noel Barber
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
Human Trafficking is the modern-day equivalent of slavery. Those who perpetuate it do so because it is lucrative to invest in a product that can be resold multiple times (Ellis, 2017). The recent advancement of technology has tremendously helped traffickers thrive in the illicit business of Human Trafficking. Social media websites, online classifieds, and mobile applications are quickly becoming some of the major mediums perpetrators utilize to traffick their victims (Latonero, 2012). The purpose of this study was to examine social service workers’ knowledge on the use of technology for Human Trafficking. Face-to-face interviews were conducted and the participants were …
A Communication Guide For Ex-Offenders, Richard Anthony Contreras
A Communication Guide For Ex-Offenders, Richard Anthony Contreras
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
Incarceration rates and the release rate of ex-offenders into the community are both increasing. Studies have shown, on a consistent basis, that, while incarcerated, ex-offenders experience lower literacy levels than the general population, suffer emotional and mental distress from a harsh prison life, and suffer from the negative effects of public perception. Ex-offender anger abounds. These factors interfere with an inmate’s ability to communicate effectively. Notwithstanding, upon release from custody, how do we help such ex-offenders communicate? Many handbooks exist to help former inmates. However, the vast majority only offer assistance with locating government social services agencies, obtaining documents, and …

Data were collected through qualitative interviews with their residential counselors across five different residential treatment centers in southern California.
The most common challenges reported by the residential treatment counselors included multiple roles, role limitation, dual-status youth behaviors, deficiency in training, management, and preparation when working with dual-status youth in …
Does Resilience Occur From Predisposed Characteristics, Or From Experiences, Moments, And/Or People The Individual Encounters Throughout His/Her Childhood, Marlene Anceno
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
This study explores how resilience is gained in childhood. Therefore the question becomes does resilience occur from predisposed characteristics or does it occur from experiences, moments, and people the individual encounters during their childhood. This project presents the results of a qualitative study of 15 master degree student participants that gave responses based on their childhood experiences. One of the requirements for this study, was that each participant had to have suffered from being at risk of factors that could have decreased their resilience, called contextual risks. There were three themes that emerged from this study and they are strengths, …

The findings from this study have significant ramifications for the social service field on both Macro and Micro levels. At a Micro scale, the data validates the additional responsibilities of BSSP’s, while bringing more awareness to this group of professionals. Additional findings contribute to new policies regarding BSSPs job responsibilities; for example, accurate job descriptions and training for positions that require translation and interpretation. An exploratory study using qualitative data was …
Effects Of Lek Location And Female Presence On Dancing Behavior In Long-Tailed Manakins (Chiroxiphia Linearis), June 2018, Dennis Finger
Effects Of Lek Location And Female Presence On Dancing Behavior In Long-Tailed Manakins (Chiroxiphia Linearis), June 2018, Dennis Finger
Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation
Sexual selection, the process by which individuals of one biological sex select mates of the other sex, often leads to the formation of displays, ornaments, and weapons to improve mating success. Long-tailed manakins (Chiroxiphia linearis) exhibit a unique example of sexual selection in their bright plumage, long tails, and coordinated lekking dances. I investigated sexual selection by analyzing dancing behavior of long-tailed manakins in Monteverde, Costa Rica. I filmed leks to measure the effects of dance variant (Cartwheel or Up-Down), lek location, and female presence on variation in dance features. Cartwheel bouts of dancing occurred only when the female was …

This exploratory, qualitative research study examined the perceptions and attitudes police officers expressed regarding successful implementation of the Lethality Assessment Protocol (LAP), a collaborative intervention between police departments and domestic violence advocacy agencies in the State of Connecticut. Focus groups were conducted at four police departments to determine officers’ perceptions of the LAP. Officers (N=27) were recruited through an individual contact at the police department (LAP Coordinator). Responses to focus group questions identified both aggravating and mitigating factors related to the system-wide and departmental execution of the LAP in domestic violence cases. Officers generally support the protocol and believe it …
The Political Logic Of Destituent Power: Time, Subjectivity, And Revolutionary Violence, Kieran Aarons
The Political Logic Of Destituent Power: Time, Subjectivity, And Revolutionary Violence, Kieran Aarons
College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation is a study of the relation between time, subjectivity, and violence in revolutionary social transformation. It argues that Giorgio Agamben's theory of 'destituent power' offers a compelling reconception of the meaning and function of revolutionary violence, whose originality is bound up in the theory of time from which it cannot be dissociated. The thesis demonstrates that development of this theory required that Agamben revise his earlier conception of political violence and revolutionary time. While the definition of revolutionary violence remains constant throughout his work (as 'the restoration of participation in the creation of the world'), the nature and …
