Fernando Pessoa And The Portuguese Modernist Heritage: A Sociocultural Analysis, Fernando Magalhães Ph.D. Jun 2018

Fernando Pessoa And The Portuguese Modernist Heritage: A Sociocultural Analysis, Fernando Magalhães Ph.D.

Journal of International and Global Studies

The early twentieth century was a tumultuous time for Portuguese society. Shortly before World War I began, the Portuguese monarchy fell and gave way to the First Republic on October 5, 1910. Collectively, the 1890 British ultimatum to Portugal—which forced Portugal to retreat from its claimed colonial African territories—the fall of the monarchy, and the country’s participation in the First World War set the framework for the post-romantic period. The cultural elite of the time initiated movements such as the Portuguese Renaissance in defense of a nation open to Europe yet still marked by a desire to return to its …

Conclusion

The use of animals in schools has become an increasingly important topic of discussion, as there are various reasons that animals might be an important component of the school day for our students. Purposes can range from service animals to therapy animals or even recreational or visitation animals. While there are benefits and considerations for all animals in schools, under the current legal mandates, there is only one category of animals that is required be allowed in schools: service animals. The Americans with Disabilities Act has set forth clear regulations stating that service animals must be allowed to accommodate …

Conspiracy Theories And The Zika Epidemic, Shawn C. Smallman Ph.D. Jun 2018

Conspiracy Theories And The Zika Epidemic, Shawn C. Smallman Ph.D.

Journal of International and Global Studies

After a Zika outbreak began in Brazil in April 2015, narratives blamed the virus on a variety of international actors, including chemical companies and the Gates Foundation. Many of these narratives drew upon older conspiracy theories that had circulated in Latin America during the 2009 H1N1 influenza pandemic. Whether these narratives denounced transgenic mosquitoes or pesticides, they reflected not only the fear created by a mysterious wave of birth defects but also a profound mistrust of health authorities and transnational corporations. This paper will examine the narratives that circulated on YouTube, blogs, podcasts, and other alternative media sources, which typically …

Creating A Global Sustainable Lifelong Learning Society: An Andragogical Approach, Suwithida Charungkaittikul Ph.D., John A. Henschke Edd

Journal of International and Global Studies

Today, the world is changing, reestablishing the role of education in order to have a developed society. This study aims to explore the practical application of andragogy as a key element for creating a sustainable lifelong learning society, to propose strategies for developing a lifelong learning society using andragogical concepts, to enhance “andragogy” as a scientific academic discipline and to expand on the horizon of andragogical assumptions and processes put forth by Malcolm Knowles. The literature on andragogy demonstrates the need to consider the future of andragogy, which may strengthen the theory and allow for the assumptions and processes to …

Regional Economic Groupings And Security Challenges: A Comparative Study Of Ecowas And Sadc, G.S. Mmaduabuchi Okeke Ph.D., Tola Odubajo Ph.D.

Journal of International and Global Studies

Amidst the demanding need for economic integration, the pressure for security is always present. The several dimensions of security have also suffered a paradigmatic shift, especially in the context of upsurge in global terrorism, and several human security challenges. The article contextually addresses the contending issues and comparatively analyzes the similarities and differences in both regions: West Africa and Southern Africa. The functionalist approach is applied in the explanations of the circumstances that led to the establishment of ECOWAS and SADC as Regional Economic Groupings. Data for the research were adapted from secondary sources; published works, from libraries, internet sources …

Before And After 9/11: Indo-U.S. Counterterrorism Cooperation, Afroz Ahmad Ph.D., . Najish Ph.D.

Journal of International and Global Studies

Coined during the French Revolution to describe “the reign of terror” between 1793-94, the term “terror” originated from the Latin word “terrere,” which reflects frighten or tremble and had positive connotations (Bolz et al., 2002). Today, terrorism has transformed into a more menacing specter by adopting new techniques and using advanced mass media communication and technology. Moreover, terrorism has become a political as well as a legal and military issue that the international community cannot afford to ignore. The United States, India and the entire world community have long been struggling with the continuing threat of terrorism. Both India and …

The Housing Crisis In Puerto Rico And The Impact Of Hurricane Maria, Jennifer Hinojosa, Edwin Melendez Jun 2018

The Housing Crisis In Puerto Rico And The Impact Of Hurricane Maria, Jennifer Hinojosa, Edwin Melendez

CUNY Centro, The Center for Puerto Rican Studies

By all counts, Puerto Rico’s housing market is in a deep and prolonged crisis. At least 18 percent of Puerto Rico’s housing stock is vacant as a result of the island’s prolonged economic recession, which commenced in 2006, and the spike in foreclosures after Hurricane Maria suggests that vacant units are increasing at an accelerated rate. Puerto Rico’s economic recession led to depopulation and the loss of jobs, which induced a decline of home equity values and an increase in foreclosures. More recently, Puerto Rico’s housing stock has been damaged due to Hurricane Maria, which devastated the island on September …

Balancing Patient Control And Practical Access Policy For Electronic Health Records Via Blockchain Technology, Elena Horton Jun 2018

Balancing Patient Control And Practical Access Policy For Electronic Health Records Via Blockchain Technology, Elena Horton

Dartmouth College Undergraduate Theses

Electronic health records (EHRs) have revolutionized the health information technology domain, as patient data can be easily stored and accessed within and among medical institutions. However, in working towards nationwide patient engagement and interoperability goals, recent literature adopts a very patient-centric model---patients own their universal, holistic medical records and control exactly who can access their health data. I contend that this approach is largely impractical for healthcare workflows, where many separate providers require access to health records for care delivery. My work investigates the potential of a blockchain network to balance patient control and provider accessibility with a two-fold approach. …

Public Comment Sentiment On Educational Videos: Understanding The Effects Of Presenter Gender, Video Format, Threading, And Moderation On Youtube Ted Talk Comments, George Veletsianos, Royce Kimmons, Ross Larsen, Tonia A. Dousay, Patrick R. Lowenthal Jun 2018

Public Comment Sentiment On Educational Videos: Understanding The Effects Of Presenter Gender, Video Format, Threading, And Moderation On Youtube Ted Talk Comments, George Veletsianos, Royce Kimmons, Ross Larsen, Tonia A. Dousay, Patrick R. Lowenthal

Educational Technology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Scholars, educators, and students are increasingly encouraged to participate in online spaces. While the current literature highlights the potential positive outcomes of such participation, little research exists on the sentiment that these individuals may face online and on the factors that may lead some people to face different types of sentiment than others. To investigate these issues, we examined the strength of positive and negative sentiment expressed in response to TEDx and TED-Ed talks posted on YouTube (n = 655), the effect of several variables on comment and reply sentiment (n = 774,939), and the projected effects that …

Issue 14: Welcoming Diversity: The Role Of Local And Civil Society Initiatives In Integrating Newcomers, Feyzi Baban, Fuat Keyman, Hande Paker, Kim Rygiel

International Migration Research Centre

In a global context marked by growing international forced displacement and migration, societies are becoming increasingly more diverse. The question of how to live together with newcomers has become a policy issue of utmost concern. While populist governments in Europe and in the US are failing to offer citizens and
newcomers alternative models for living together that encourage greater ethnic, cultural and religious plurality, in this report we highlight the contributions and lessons drawn from local and civil-society initiatives that have been successful in bringing hosts and newcomers together. We explore three such cases: Riace, a small Italian village where …
