Naval War College Review

The Naval War College, since the days of Capt. A. T. Mahan, has borne a special responsibility for encouraging creative thought with regard to the strategic and tactical application of maritime power. Today, the requirement for creativity and innovation is especially demanding in view of the new ships, aircraft, weapon systems, and sensors now in the fleet or entering production-all this at a time when the political, economic, and military context in which the U.S. Navy must function is changing with astonishing rapidity.

Development And Validation Of The Value-Expectancy Stem Assessment Scale For Students In Higher Education, Joseph Appianing, Richard Van Eck

Teaching, Leadership & Professional Practice Faculty Publications

Background: Science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) jobs are expected to make up a significant portion of the U.S. workforce. Unfortunately, the trend in retaining students in STEM majors has been going down. If higher education institutions are going to retain more students in STEM majors, it will be important to understand who leaves STEM fields and why. More than 32% of women college students who declare a STEM major are likely to switch to non-STEM majors before they graduate, whereas only 25% of their male counterparts do so, and women may be as much as 1.5 times more likely …

Project Paws, Christina L. Murdock, Bailey Hopkins, Brooklyn Jackson, Rachel Mulberry

International Journal of Undergraduate Community Engagement

For our service learning project, our group decided to make dog treats and sell them to raise money for the local animal shelter. On the side of making dog treats, we also accepted blanket donations and cash donations. It was more difficult than anticipated to sell the dog treats but we eventually did it and raise around $70 for the animal shelter to use to keep the animals warm and healthy through the winter. The Census That Almost Wasn’T: The Contentious Politics Of Census 2021 In Great Britain, Patricia Ahmed

South Dakota Demography Conference

There is a growing movement in Great Britain to abolish the census. This development was spearheaded by conservative politicians, who argued that the census was both prohibitively expensive (Maude 2014) and a violation of citizens’ privacy rights (Dorling 2013:6). Other Anti-Census activists argued that data could be gathered from various local agencies could be gathered and aggregated, in much more streamlined and cost effective process. Although key stakeholders in academia, local government, and civil society vigorously fought these proposals, the census's existence in the UK remains distinctively in doubt. The current implementation of GIS in the State ranges from geoprocessing by environmental scientist to providing complex data in an easy to understand format for the general public. Currently the demand for GIS functionality has precipitated the State’s SDI (Spatial Data Infrastructure) to rapidly grow in depth and breadth. This expansion, although not complete, has had a huge impact in the improvement of data entry, improved data validation, and a more open and transparent government.
