Update In Attitudes Towards Wage Equality In Gendered Professions, Emily Dane-Staples
Update In Attitudes Towards Wage Equality In Gendered Professions, Emily Dane-Staples
Sport Management Faculty/Staff Publications
Employment research has asked diverse questions about job satisfaction, gender appropriate work, wage and compensation satisfaction and parity, and advancement. Most existing research has explored gender discrimination in traditional professions such as engineering, law, education, and medicine; notably absent is the billion dollar industry of sport. This research sought to remedy that shortcoming by exploring attitudes towards wage equality across gender for eight different professions, including coaching positions and that of a professional athlete. Survey results found that most respondents were in favor of wage equality across all professions, but the sport professions showed the greatest amount of variation. Differences …
The Opioid Crisis In Rural And Small Town America, Shannon M. Monnat, Khary K. Rigg
The Opioid Crisis In Rural And Small Town America, Shannon M. Monnat, Khary K. Rigg
Carsey Publications
In this brief, authors Shannon Monnat and Khary Rigg examine rural versus urban differences in opioid mortality and identify challenges for dealing with the opioid crisis in rural areas. They report that, in 2016, opioid mortality rates were higher in urban than in rural counties, particularly in the Midwest, but rates have increased more in rural than in urban counties over the past two decades. Since 2010, the share of drug overdose deaths involving prescription opioids has declined, but the share of deaths involving heroin and synthetic opioids has spiked in both rural and urban areas. The most dramatic increases …
“I Want To Be Who I Am”: Stories Of Rejecting Binary Gender, Ana Balius
“I Want To Be Who I Am”: Stories Of Rejecting Binary Gender, Ana Balius
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Historically, in academic literature—sociological and otherwise—surrounding the daily lives of LGBT+ people, people who reject binary gender are very marginally represented. In this study, I specifically seek to understand the way my participants articulate their sense of their gender identities through the stories they tell of their experiences. This study attempts to answer the following questions: What are the stories of gender identity construction for people who reject binary gender? How do they understand the ways they are held accountable to binary gender in the day-to-day? How do they perceive and make meaning of gender in their lives? Through ten …

Case Studies Of Female Director Appointment Announcements In The Dax 30: A Comparison Of Press Releases And News Articles In English And German, Elizabeth Tatara
Case Studies Of Female Director Appointment Announcements In The Dax 30: A Comparison Of Press Releases And News Articles In English And German, Elizabeth Tatara
Undergraduate Project Award
Elizabeth’s project was the outgrowth of a European Union study tour when Germany had recently passed legislation related to female representation on corporate boards. Intrigued to discover if there had been any subsequent impact on corporate financial performance, she embarked on an independent study project to analyze possible gender biases in the reporting and company press releases announcing newly appointed female board members in Germany. Her research engaged the existing literature, used local and international academic libraries, and included examining texts in both English and German. Dr. Valentina Zamora, her faculty member, commented that “she exhibited the self-efficacy, persistence, and …
Repatriation And Reparations: Land-Based Indigenous And Black Futurity, Olivia Klutse
Repatriation And Reparations: Land-Based Indigenous And Black Futurity, Olivia Klutse
Undergraduate Project Award
Olivia’s project was sparked by scholars from philosophy and indigenous studies and the realization that “there is a deficit of literature which examines the conjoined economic and social liberation of Black and Indigenous people” that might lead to possibilities of collaboration and transformative justice. This literature review set the stage for her subsequent Sociology honors thesis project. Olivia reflected on her growth as a researcher describing her success with creating a structure for her research process, the satisfaction of serendipitous and intentional research (including reaching out to scholars in the field) and discovering new services in the library. Dr. Rachel …

Co-Creation With Vulnerable Consumers – An Action Research Case Study Of Designing A Pictorial Language For Logistics, S. Schmitt-Rüth, M. Simon, A. Demuth, A. Kornacher, M. Isakovic, M. Krupp, M. Stoll
ServDes Conference Series
Within the context of Universal Design and User Centered Design, vulnerable consumers, especially immigrants, still represent a fringe group when it comes to co-creation processes. Therefore, the aim of our study was to find ways to integrate immigrants into a co-creation process, namely the development and testing phase of a pictorial language for warehouse jobs. Within an action research case study consisting of a four-part storyline settled in a warehouse context, we identified and specified four key success factors that contribute to a successful co-creation project with vulnerable consumers: (1) integration at the very beginning of the co-creation project, (2) …

Engagement Strategies Within Co-Making Environments Bridging Spatial And Organisational Design, Ricardo Saint-Clair
ServDes Conference Series
Makerspaces and Fablabs are open access workshops that challenge traditional top-down approaches to innovation and workplace design dedicated to creative and innovative practices. Their built environments are the main stage where a complex ecology of stakeholders intertwine. To what extent does the interior design of a space make people more collaborative and innovative? What are the settings and platforms that may affect the way people feel, behave and interact? This paper presents the methodological journey of a PhD study conducted within 18 prominent Makerspaces located in five cities of Europe. The empirical study navigates the blurry boundaries of spatial design …

Service+Spatial Design: Introducing The Fundamentals Of A Transdisciplinary Approach, Davide Fassi, Laura Galluzzo, Annalinda De Rosa
ServDes Conference Series
The paper is a position paper attempting to frame the foundations of an emerging topic in design research, education and practice: a transdisciplinary approach defined here as Service+Spatial design. Starting from the insights acquired by the authors through basic research and educational activities exploring the mutual influences between Spatial design and Service design, the challenge is to disclose the fundamentals of Service+Spatial design in order to set up a qualitative comparison and discussion around their relationships. The paper explores the cultural dimension of design, trying to identify and highlight common ground and differentiation to frame, support and expand the comparison …
The Designer As Agent Of Community, Thomas Østergaard
The Designer As Agent Of Community, Thomas Østergaard
ServDes Conference Series
A “changing paradigm” with a focus on design for social innovation (SI) has emerged over the last decade. (DESIS, 2012) The title of this article refers to a perception of design schools and design students as potential “agents of sustainable change” adding new design-domains to the existing traditional design domains. (Chick, 2012, Emilson, 2010, Manzini, 2008, 2012, 2014). The study finds it is hard for the design-students to establish their “roles” as designers and have a natural “authority” working in complex and time-limited process’. The paper produces recommendations for other educators in terms of preparing, planning and doing a SD …
User Perceptions Of Design Games As Settings For Organizational Learning: Case Topaasia, Otso Hannula, J. Tuomas Harviainen
User Perceptions Of Design Games As Settings For Organizational Learning: Case Topaasia, Otso Hannula, J. Tuomas Harviainen
ServDes Conference Series
Design games are a co-design tool used in diverse environments including service design, improving organizational processes and creating strategies. In this paper, we expand the role of design games to include organizational learning and outline a theoretical framework for analysing how design games provide a creative space which supports processes of expansive learning (Engeström, 2001) within organizations. We illustrate the framework by presenting preliminary results about the use of Topaasia, a design game for supporting co-development of organizational practices. Based on the user perception of Topaasia, we argue that design games can support organizational learning even in the absence of …

Designing Spaces And Services. An Experimental Project For Student Dormitories: Collective Experiences, Connected Lives And Linked Places, Luisa Collina, Peter Di Sabatino, Laura Galluzzo, Claudia Mastrantoni
ServDes Conference Series
This paper describes an experimental teaching project for a student dormitory building in Milan, Italy; and through this applied project the paper presents possible relationships between spatial (environment and experience design) and service design. A human-centered design process was used, exploring the potential of creativity and design thinking while co-creating with the actual people involved in the project – the dormitory students, staff, and the local community members. The process and the methodology used were very important, especially the co-design activities: the dorm, in fact, was designed by the PSSD students in the studio for the students and with the …
Traces As Service Evidence, Spyros Bofylatos
Traces As Service Evidence, Spyros Bofylatos
ServDes Conference Series
In this paper, the idea of leveraging traces in service design for sustainability is presented. Physical evidence is an essential aspect of services as the service experience exists as a choreography of people, things and processes. These designed, tangible aspects of services play an important role in the overall service experience and at the same time act as affordances, leading the user through a desired service journey without interpersonal interactions. Viewing services in the context of actor network theory, as networks of humans and non-humans suggests that this service evidence act as a carrier of explicit knowledge relegated to it …
From User-Centred To Stakeholder Oriented Service Design: Implications For The Role Of Service Designers And Their Education Based On An Example From The Public Sector, Lorenz Herfurth
ServDes Conference Series
This working paper reflects on an inquiry into a current service design practice, by sharing insights into the changing role of service designers and by outlining implications for service design education. It is based on ethnographic research with a public-sector service design agency. Observations suggest that service designers become increasingly concerned with and integrated into the organizational context that they try to change. This paper then firstly gives a real-world example of the deep integration of service designers in a client organization, a council, it continues by describing the interactions and relationships that service designers have with this organization and …
Put On Your Oxygen Mask Before Helping Others: Mental Well-Being In Service Design, Anne Dhir
Put On Your Oxygen Mask Before Helping Others: Mental Well-Being In Service Design, Anne Dhir
ServDes Conference Series
This paper describes the lessons learned from Service Design projects which have tackled sensitive subjects: from young people in care, mental health, unemployment, homelessness, overcrowding, crisis and domestic violence to name but a few. It highlights the importance of adapting normal project practice to protect the mental health and well-being of all those involved in a project. It argues that project rituals must be developed to look after the participants, which requires a shift in company’ cultures to truly value mental health and well-being and to reduce staff stress and trauma.
Building Trust In Relational Services: The Analysis Of A Sharing Service Between Neighbours, Mariana Ferreira De Freitas, Carla Cipolla
Building Trust In Relational Services: The Analysis Of A Sharing Service Between Neighbours, Mariana Ferreira De Freitas, Carla Cipolla
ServDes Conference Series
This article presents a study about a crucial interpersonal quality in relational services: trust. We analyse the trust-building process that enables a sharing service between neighbours called “Tem Açúcar?”. Based on literature review on service design for social innovation and sociological aspects related to trust, we describe the service process three-level segmentation: trust in the enabling platform (product-service system), trust in the neighbour (peer-to-peer) and trust in the local network (neighbourhood). It is concluded that trust-building occurs both top-down and bottom-up among participants and how it turns into confidence throughout the process. This study contributes to investigations not only about …

The Act Of Giving – Sur. A Service For Sharing And Co-Producing Gifts, Giulia Bencini, Kuno Prey, Alvise Mattozzi
ServDes Conference Series
Sur is the prototype of a relational service for gift production. Sur is aimed at articulating, nourishing and strengthening relationships between the giver and the receiver of the gift. The co-production of personalised gifts is supervised and guided by a designer and supported by a network of crafts(wo)men-makers. Sur provides the opportunity not only to reflect upon the issue “sharing and collaborating”, but also, more in general, upon the role of gifts within services and especially within relational services.

Understanding Generalisability From Network-Conscious Service Design Projects, Tim Overkamp, Martina Caic, Stefan Holmlid, Dominik Mahr, Gaby Odekerken-Schröder
ServDes Conference Series
The influence of technology on value co-creation practices of service actors has been studied from a service encounter perspective, during or after technology introduction. We contribute to this existing research by introducing a multi-actor perspective to study such changes prior to technology deployment. We provide two illustrative cases that show how this can be done. In addition, we study the generalisability of findings from such research projects, through an exploratory qualitative comparison of the projects. We make a second contribution by providing five contextual aspects for other researchers to use when assessing 1) generalisability of our findings and 2) to …

This paper will describe how Förnyelselabbet, a design driven lab, takes on challenging areas that spans across policy, organizational and sectorial boundaries. The paper will give an account of how Förnyelselabbet has set up its co-creation and engagement process. The process is not specifically devised to deliver solutions at a micro level, but to drive change across the welfare system from policy, over new collaborations to specific service interactions. The lab was initiated as a response to the large number of unaccompanied minors that arrived in Sweden around the fall of 2015, based on political insight and a decision by …

Gsa Members' Experiences With A Structured Program To Promote Well-Being, Alicia A. Lapointe, Claire Crooks
Journal Articles
LGBT2Q+ youth experience significant oppression in schools and there are few evidence-informed programs to promote well-being. This study describes the experiences of youth who participated in a 17-session structured mental health promotion program through their GSAs. Focus groups were conducted with 15 youth. Results indicated that the program helped youth validate and affirm their identities and expressions. The program also afforded youth structured opportunities to identify and process minority stressors, and develop essential coping strategies to bolster their well-being and manage their toxic relationships.

Organizational Correlates Of Police Deviance: A Statewide Analysis Of Misconduct In Arizona, 2000-2011, Jessica Huff, Michael D. White, Scott H. Decker
Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications
Purpose
Many examinations of police misconduct involve case study methodologies applied to a single agency, or a handful of agencies. Consequently, there is little evidence regarding the types of misconduct across agencies, or the impact of department-level characteristics on the nature and prevalence of officer deviance. The purpose of this paper is to address this research gap using statewide data of over 1,500 charges of police misconduct filed with the Arizona Peace Officer Standards and Training Board (AZPOST) from 2000 to 2011.
Design/methodology/approach
This study examines variation in the prevalence and forms of misconduct across 100+ agencies based on agency …

Agency In Action: Exploring User Responses And Rhetorical Choices In Interactive Data Displays, Jacob D. Rawlins, Gregory D. Wilson, Kate Crane
Faculty Publications
n 2014, Rawlins and Wilson proposed a typology of agential interactions between users and designers of interactive data displays. This article tests that typology by studying 20 users working with three different types of interactive data displays and answering questions, which were coded by verb and actor and analyzed for themes. The authors show that rhetorical agency is marked by thoughts, actions, and language. Affordances by the designer open a shared rhetorical space where user and designer are coparticipants. As interactivity increases, participants see themselves as rhetorical agents in a community of rhetorical agents rather than as conduits of information.
A Narrative And Performative Methodology For Understanding Adolescent Cancer Stories, Patrick Mcelearney
A Narrative And Performative Methodology For Understanding Adolescent Cancer Stories, Patrick Mcelearney
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The field of health communication places considerable attention on coping with cancer, typically using social scientific approaches to investigate uncertainty, information, and/or social networks. Social scientific models of coping with adolescent cancer often measure how behaviors seek to manage cancer’s uncontrollability and/or uncertainty; however, how adolescents cope with cancer has been unclear. Short-term studies show adolescents typically and atypically cope. Long-term studies show a significant portion of survivors exhibit post-traumatic stress. The narrative and performative turns expose the role narratives and performatives play in shaping human subjects as meaning makers rather than merely information sharers. A narrative subject reframes cancer’s …
Building Program Quality In Youth Development Staff Training: Critical Components As Perceived By Currently Employed Youth Development Professionals In The United States, Jeantyl Norze
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Program quality is the program characteristics, indicators, and implementation practices that stakeholders mutually agreed upon. These program quality components are interlinked. Therefore, it is critical to help youth practitioners think through the logical connection among the components of program quality. This can be partly achieved through professional development, which equips practitioners with competencies necessary to perform their tasks. As a result, a staff training model was designed to corroborate the work that has been done in the positive youth development field with the aim of achieving program quality using a systematic review method. This staff training model comprises four components: …
