Increasing Awareness: Does Early Childhood Drug Education Provide Diversion From Using Drugs And/Or Alcohol?, Megan Bailey, Shelby Wasson, Brilynn Roberts, Toni Morris, Deborah Sue Judge
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
In the U.S., nearly 2,200 youth (ages 12 - 17) abuse prescription painkillers each day with illegal drug use being the second leading cause of accidental death for this age group. Research supports school-based education as an intervention to discourage substance abuse however evidence-based content and standardization is lacking.

A Relativist Conceptual Model For Assessing Multiple Stakeholders Perceived Needs, Matthew D. Ankers
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
The poster presents a conceptual model for assessing need in multiple stakeholder groups. The model adopts a relativists position by identifying distinct stakeholder groups and investigates their shared reality through survey or interviews. Once assessed, the conceptual model can determine where views meet, diverge and be negotiated between groups.
Management Of Facilitators And Obstacles Experienced By Hispanics In Their First Semester Of A Baccalaureate Nursing Program, Diana Couling Martinez Dolan
Management Of Facilitators And Obstacles Experienced By Hispanics In Their First Semester Of A Baccalaureate Nursing Program, Diana Couling Martinez Dolan
Dissertations
Although an ethnically diverse workforce is believed to enhance patient care quality, Hispanics are under-represented in nursing. Recruiting and retaining Hispanic students in nursing programs is essential for greater workforce participation. This grounded theory study explored practices used by Hispanic nursing students to promote their academic success during the first semester of a baccalaureate of science in nursing (BSN) program. Fifteen Hispanic nursing students participated in focus groups and individual interviews. As students moved through their first semester, a trajectory of adaption was identified consisting of arrival, managing, and responding to evaluations. Finances, family dynamics, dealing with potential failure, and …

Future Ozone-Related Acute Excess Mortality Under Climate And Population Change Scenarios In China: A Modeling Study, Kai Chen, Arlene M. Fiore, Renjie Chen, Leiwen Jiang, Bryan Jones, Alexandra Schneider, Annette Peters, Jun Bi, Haidong Kan, Patrick L. Kinney
Publications and Research
Background Climate change is likely to further worsen ozone pollution in already heavily polluted areas, leading to increased ozone-related health burdens. However, little evidence exists in China, the world's largest greenhouse gas emitter and most populated country. As China is embracing an aging population with changing population size and falling age-standardized mortality rates, the potential impact of population change on ozone-related health burdens is unclear. Moreover, little is known about the seasonal variation of ozone-related health burdens under climate change. We aimed to assess near-term (mid-21st century) future annual and seasonal excess mortality from short-term exposure to ambient ozone in …

Towards Implementation Of Sociology Theory In Management Accounting Research, Sofik Handoyo, Syaiful Anas
Journal of Accounting Auditing and Business
This article aims to give another perspective for Management accounting scholars implement sociology theories in their researchers. Traditionally, accounting researchers have been conducted relying on accounting theory, management theory, economic theory, and psychological theory. However, in line with popularity academic research that involves the interdisciplinary field of study, it is, therefore, the possibility to adopt another perspective of theory from a related discipline. Since Management accounting discipline is closely associated with the organization and behavior of an individual within the organization, sociology theory is considered fit to be adopted. This article will figure out potential research in management accounting discipline …
Student Experiences Of Research Methods Education In College-Based Higher Education, Rebecca Turner, Carole Sutton, Claire Gray, Sebastian Stevens, Julie Swain
Student Experiences Of Research Methods Education In College-Based Higher Education, Rebecca Turner, Carole Sutton, Claire Gray, Sebastian Stevens, Julie Swain
School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences
Research methods education is a challenging area for lecturers and students to engage with; students regularly demonstrate negative dispositions to research methods and lecturers struggle with issues such as curriculum marginalisation. However, employers increasingly demand graduates equipped with skills as researchers. Consequently, in university-based higher education, there has been investment to support research and good practice in this area. In contrast, limited attention has been paid to research methods education in college-based higher education. We report the outcomes of a small-scale national study designed to capture contemporary insights in research methods provision in college-based higher education. Drawing on data from …

Performing The Quality Of Imperceptible Interactions Between Individuals: A Technological Challenge Regarding The Collective, Marine Theunissen
Performing The Quality Of Imperceptible Interactions Between Individuals: A Technological Challenge Regarding The Collective, Marine Theunissen
Proceedings from the Document Academy
Contemporary technologies allow incredible possibilities of capturing individuals, but a problem arises when it comes to capturing a chorus, that is to say a "collective body" in motion. This proposal will address the problem of the sensitive capture of the quality of the interrelations between individuals, and of their refined interpretation through algorithms to "output” them in other forms. We will address two questions on the subject: how to capture the relations between individuals within a collective? How to create a circular-causal loop, whose artistic material (the digital data) is the interrelations of a collective, without engendering redundancy in their …
The Walking Dramaturg: An Autoethnographic Methodology For Performance Documentation, Giselle G. Garcia
The Walking Dramaturg: An Autoethnographic Methodology For Performance Documentation, Giselle G. Garcia
Proceedings from the Document Academy
Technology usually implies the distancing of the human experience, but I argue what technology has enabled can teach us something about the role of multiplicity and the rhizomatic nature of history and storytelling. By looking at the subject position of the practicing performance researcher in terms of the walking dramaturg, the autoethnographic catalogue of such experience becomes a form of documentation in the archive of theatre histories. Taking the time to explore a nuanced understanding of the documeter’s subject position acknowledges the multifarious subject positions that contribute to the archive of theatre histories.
Beyond creating a record of evidence, I …

Publications and Research
We sought to evaluate the frequency of anxiety, depression, PTSD, and any experiences of violence in women who had undergone Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting (FGM/C) and were seeking asylum in the United States. We undertook a retrospective qualitative descriptive study of FGM/C cases seen in an asylum clinic over a 2-year period. Standardized questionnaires provided quantitative scores for anxiety, depression and PTSD. Clients’ personal and physician medical affidavits were analyzed for experiences of violence. Of the 13 cases, anxiety and depression were exhibited by 92 and 100% of women, while all seven women screened for PTSD had symptoms. Qualitative analysis revealed …

Understanding Police Officer Resistance To Body-Worn Cameras, Jessica Huff, Charles M. Katz, Vincent J. Webb
Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications
Purpose
Body-worn cameras (BWCs) have been adopted in police agencies across the USA in efforts to increase police transparency and accountability. This widespread implementation has occurred despite some notable resistance to BWCs from police officers in some jurisdictions. This resistance poses a threat to the appropriate implementation of this technology and adherence to BWC policies. The purpose of this paper is to examine factors that could explain variation in officer receptivity to BWCs.
Design/methodology/approach
The authors assess differences between officers who volunteered to wear a BWC and officers who resisted wearing a BWC as part of a larger randomized controlled …
Using Context Specific Measures Of Maximizing Tendency To Reduce Inconsistency In Findings, Thomas Holzhauer
Using Context Specific Measures Of Maximizing Tendency To Reduce Inconsistency In Findings, Thomas Holzhauer
Theses and Dissertations
The relation between maximizing tendency, the tendency to search for alternatives to make the highest quality decision, and its theorized outcome, regret, has mixed support in previous maximizing tendency literature. In the current study, it was hypothesized that measuring maximizing tendency in different contexts, as opposed to measuring maximizing tendency globally, could reduce this inconsistency. This hypothesis was tested by administering measures of maximizing tendency from different contexts and maximizing tendency without context and using the results in hypothesized models. The models were tested using confirmatory factor analysis, structural equation modeling, and path analysis. Results showed that using context specific …

Being Māori And Pākehā: Methodology And Method In Exploring Cultural Hybridity, Niki Grennell-Hawke (Ngai Tahu, Ngai Mutunga), Keith Tudor Dr
The Qualitative Report
This article addresses the first author’s experience of identifying as both Māori and Pākehā in Aotearoa New Zealand. Based on her own research using both kaupapa research theory and heuristic research method, and supervised by the second author, the article describes her negotiation of the experience of being a hybrid cultural subject and object, of belonging and not belonging. The article extends the practice and understanding of cross-cultural research on a number of levels: the intrapsychic (i.e., within the principal investigator herself), the interpersonal (i.e., between the researcher and supervisor), and the methodological (i.e., between an indigenous and a Western …
Inside And Outside Perspectives: A Review Of Invisible Asians: Korean American Adoptees, Asian American Experiences And Racial Exceptionalism, Jinsu Byun
The Qualitative Report
The following is a review of the book Invisible Asians: Korean American Adoptees, Asian American Experiences and Racial Exceptionalism, written by Kim Park Nelson. In the book, the author used ethnography and collected oral histories, and critical race theory and a post-colonial approach were employed as theoretical frameworks. In particular, as not only an insider (an adoptee) but an outsider (a researcher), she maintained a well-balanced view in describing vivid lived experiences of Korean adoptees and diverse sociocultural environments that impacted them. This book would be a great guide for novice qualitative researchers who want to be ethnographers and …
Essays In The Social Determinants Of Health And Public Health Policy, Glen Vincent Mcdermott
Essays In The Social Determinants Of Health And Public Health Policy, Glen Vincent Mcdermott
Economics ETDs
There is broad-based qualitative evidence arguing that stress is a public health concern. In the search for causality however, economists investigating public health concerns are often limited to a narrow subset of socio-economic status (SES) factors which are not well suited to the evaluation of stress/health effects. As a result, economists have a difficult time answering the “how” and “why” questions which emerge from the well-respected SES/health gradient. This dissertation focuses on a subset of stressors credibly affiliated with SES to address two pathways underling the established SES/Health gradient. Chapter 2 uses the Panel Study of Income Dynamics to test …
Ethical And Methodological Issues Resulting From Recording Lapses In Qualitative Research, Jason D. Reynolds (Taewon Choi), Minsun Lee
Ethical And Methodological Issues Resulting From Recording Lapses In Qualitative Research, Jason D. Reynolds (Taewon Choi), Minsun Lee
The Qualitative Report
Technological difficulties, such as recording lapses and dropped calls, during interviews for qualitative research lead to important ethical and methodological considerations. Using case examples from our own experiences with recording lapses, we walk through some of the questions to consider, including relational ethics and how changes in the data affect the validity of our findings. We argue that how ethical and methodological issues raised by recording lapses are to be handled largely depends on the paradigm in which each study is situated, ranging from postpositivist to constructivist to critical theory. However, we recommend that: (a) participants should be informed about …

In the present article we explore how family prayer reportedly influenced family relationships. We conceptualized family prayer as a family ritual in religious families and used a qualitative methodology to interview a religiously, ethnically, and geographically diverse sample of 198 families (N = 476). Analysis of data revealed 7 related themes. Family prayer served important functions and influenced relationships in various ways including (a) as time of family togetherness and interaction; (b) as a space for social support; and (c) as a means for intergenerational transmission of religion. Further, family prayer (d) involved issues and concerns of individuals and …

Co-Creating Our Lives, Performing Our Multi-Cultural Worlds, Aidah Nalubowa
Theses and Dissertations
In his Foreword for Theatre and Migration (Cox 2014), director Peter Sellars writes, “None of us are the picture in our passports” (viii). Neither are we the person that we look or sound like at first glance or the first meeting. Rather, who we are is shaped by among other factors our environment and cultural upbringing. Because traditionally people from different places perform and participate in social and cultural events that are naturally “scripted” differently, we are so much more than the pictures and names we carry on our identification documents. Migration, Sellars continues, is “one of the most basic …
