Seven half-day regional listening sessions were held between December 2016 and April 2017 with groups of diverse stakeholders on the issues and potential solutions for herbicide resistance management. The objective of the listening sessions was to connect with stakeholders and hear their challenges and recommendations for addressing herbicide resistance. The coordinating team hired Strategic Conservation Solutions, LLC, to facilitate all the sessions. They and the coordinating team used in-person meetings, teleconferences, and email to communicate and coordinate the activities leading up to each regional listening session. The agenda was the same across all sessions and included small-group discussions followed by …

Managing Wicked Herbicide-Resistance: Lessons From The Field, Jill Schroeder, Michael Barrett, David R. Shaw, Amy Asmus, Harold Coble, David E. Ervin, Multiple Additional Authors

Economics Faculty Publications and Presentations

Herbicide resistance is ‘wicked’ in nature; therefore, results of the many educational efforts to encourage diversification of weed control practices in the United States have been mixed. It is clear that we do not sufficiently understand the totality of the grassroots obstacles, concerns, challenges, and specific solutions needed for varied crop production systems. Weed management issues and solutions vary with such variables as management styles, regions, cropping systems, and available or affordable technologies. Therefore, to help the weed science community better understand the needs and ideas of those directly dealing with herbicide resistance, seven half-day regional listening sessions were held …

Fair Trade, Daniel Jaffee Aug 2018

Fair Trade, Daniel Jaffee

Sociology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Chapter 16.

This lesson begins by discussing the dynamics behind the structural inequity in the global trade in agrifood products. We then take a brief look at fair trade’s history, the basic mechanisms of the fair trade model for food products, and the current state of fair trade. Two case studies of fair trade in action will give a taste of the social benefits that participating in this alternative market can generate for producers, but also the limits to fair trade’s impact and the contradictions that can arise. We will also examine some key controversies that have caused major divisions …

What’S Happening During Home Visits? Exploring The Relationship Of Home Visiting Content And Dosage To Parenting Outcomes, Peggy Nygren, Beth Green, Katie Winters, Anna Rockhill

School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Presentations

Research has documented modest positive impacts of early childhood home visiting programs. However, understanding more about what home visitors do during visits and how much time they spend on specific topics may provide insight into the variability in effectiveness of services. Methods Outcome data were collected via parent survey at program enrollment and 12 months from 123 women in three MIECHV-funded home visiting models. Home visitors completed weekly home visit content and activity logs. Results Families received an average of 28 visits during the study (3.1 visits per month). Of ten content areas, the three most often discussed were early …

Political Power In The Peripheries: The Paramilitares From Magdalena Medio (Colombia), 1978-2003, Nicolás Guillermo Velásquez Hernández

Open Access Dissertations

This dissertation explores the political discourse and military behavior of the “paramilitares” right-wing militia as well as of the local political alliances that sponsored and initially controlled these militias in the Magdalena Medio region, a rural periphery in Colombia, during the last decades of the 20th century. Previous literature explains these right-wing militias simultaneously as reaction of rural elites to the incapacity of the Central State to monopolize political violence and as the consequence of the rural elites fear of an agrarian reform. Yet, from a tradition Weberian perspective, it is impossible to present the state as both capable and …

A Comparison Of Sources Of Business Acumen For Entrepreneurs Originating From Developed And Developing Countries (A Research Note), Jacqueline Joslyn Jul 2018

A Comparison Of Sources Of Business Acumen For Entrepreneurs Originating From Developed And Developing Countries (A Research Note), Jacqueline Joslyn

Journal of Rural Social Sciences

The implications of migration from less developed to more developed contexts remain understudied at the individual level. With data collected from a pilot study in Tucson, Arizona, this article uses a Galois lattice to compare sources of business acumen from small business entrepreneurs originating from developed and developing countries. Osili and Paulson (2008) observe that immigrants are influenced by the institutional environment from which they originate. This contrasts with historical evidence that individuals of Mexican origin have largely assimilated to the local culture (Amado 1988). The findings offer promising evidence for Osili and Paulson’s theory and suggest that formal credentials …

Participation In Selected Usda Programs By Socially Disadvantaged Farmers In Selected Black Belt Counties In Georgia, Lucy Asare-Baah, Robert Zabawa, Henry J. Findlay

Journal of Rural Social Sciences

This study examines the characteristics of African American Farmers (AAFs), a significant subgroup of socially disadvantaged farmers (SDFs) in the U.S. South, and their overall awareness of USDA programs. Specifically, these programs include the Farm Ownership Loan (FOL) and Operating Loan (OL) programs, the Environmental Quality Incentive Program (EQIP), and the Value-Added Producer Grant (VAPG) program. It also investigates the main reasons for participation and non-participation in these programs, assesses the relationship between program application and the rate of approval, and examines the relationship between USDA program outreach to SDFs and program implementation. Using convenience sampling, data collected from respondents …

Analysis Of Staying Time In Italian Agritourism Using A Quantitative Methodology: The Case Of Latium Region, Nicola Galluzzo Jul 2018

Analysis Of Staying Time In Italian Agritourism Using A Quantitative Methodology: The Case Of Latium Region, Nicola Galluzzo

Journal of Rural Social Sciences

The aim of this article was to investigate and assess, using a quantitative empirical methodology, which variables influence the staying time at agritourism facilities in the Latium region of Italy. Using quantitative methodology derived from the chemical process of absorption, this case study explores the ability of a farm to absorb tourist flows. Findings point out the incidence of agritourists on the total tourism flow and the number of rooms are two variables directly correlated to the staying time. Simultaneously, the model estimated the level of “laziness” of tourists as a function of their staying time in agritourist facilities, which …

Changing Neighborhoods And Residents’ Health Perceptions: The Heart Healthy Hoods Qualitative Study, Paloma Conde, Marta Gutiérrez, Maria Sandin, Julia Díez, Luisa N. Borrell, Jesús Rivera-Navarro, Manuel Franco

Publications and Research

Cities, and therefore neighborhoods, are under constant change. Neighborhood changes may affect residents’ health in multiple ways. The Heart Healthy Hoods (HHH) project studies the association between neighborhood and residents’ health. Focusing on a middle–low-socioeconomic neighborhood in Madrid (Spain), our aim was to describe qualitatively its residents’ perceptions on the urban changes and their impacts on health. We designed a qualitative study using 16 semi-structured interviews including adult residents and professionals living or working in the area. Firstly, we described the perceived main social and neighborhood changes. Secondly, we studied how these neighborhood changes connected to residents’ health perceptions. Perceived …

Economic Identity, Price And Policy: Willingness To Pay For Fracking Regulation In Colorado, Adam Mayer Jul 2018

Economic Identity, Price And Policy: Willingness To Pay For Fracking Regulation In Colorado, Adam Mayer

Journal of Rural Social Sciences

This article considers public support for increased regulation of unconventional oil and gas development in Colorado. We examine the role of community economic identity and investigate the possibility of “colliding treadmills” in local political economies as drivers of policy preferences. We find that many place-based variables do little to predict regulatory support, but the cost associated with regulation (increased taxes) and political identity are especially important. Further, this study is one of a handful of sociological analyses to employ the contingent valuation method for environmental valuation, and in doing so it provides a first step toward establishing an empirically rigorous …

Multistage random sampling technique was used to select a sample size of 80 respondents. Primary data was collected with the aid of a well-structured interview schedule. The data collected was analyzed with both descriptive and inferential statistics. The results of the study revealed that rice farmers in the study area have a variety of information needs including information on pests and diseases management practices, mechanical land preparation and planting, use of farm machines, improved storage methods, and …

Catalyzing Capacity: Absorptive, Adaptive, And Generative Leadership, Elizabeth A. Castillo, Mai P. Trinh Jul 2018

Catalyzing Capacity: Absorptive, Adaptive, And Generative Leadership, Elizabeth A. Castillo, Mai P. Trinh

Management Faculty Publications

Purpose

Organizations increasingly operate under volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous (VUCA) conditions. Traditional command-and-control leadership can be ineffective in such chaotic environments. The purpose of this paper is to outline an alternative model to help leaders and organizations navigate effectively through VUCA environments. By developing three fundamental capacities (absorptive, adaptive and generative), leaders can cultivate organizations capable of continuous synchronization with their fitness landscapes. Central tenets of the framework include diversity, slack, learning, humility, reflection in action and abductive logic.

Design/methodology/approach

This framework is designed based on literature insights, conceptual analysis and experts’ judgment. The paper integrates knowledge from a …

Ethics, Aesthetics, And The Representation Of Intellectual Disability In The Realist Narrative, Elizabeth Wells Jul 2018

Ethics, Aesthetics, And The Representation Of Intellectual Disability In The Realist Narrative, Elizabeth Wells

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

In this dissertation, I argue for a renewed approach to realist texts that rely on conventional perspective and minor characters in their representation of intellectually disabled characters. While disability studies' concepts like narrative prosthesis and the normate have done essential work in arguing for the need for disability's representation from the perspective of the disabled, these ideologies have also negatively influenced the critical reception of texts that do not respond to this need in an immediate or obvious way. By offering new readings of novels with disabled characters whose representations have been frequently questioned, my aim is to complicate the …

Overview Of Using Visualisation In Programming Learning, S Alhammad, S Atkinson, Lj Stuart Jul 2018

Overview Of Using Visualisation In Programming Learning, S Alhammad, S Atkinson, Lj Stuart

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

There is a high demand for mechanisms that support programming teaching, particularly in finding a solution to the bottleneck in programming education. Nowadays, different methods of teaching can support the learning process and motivate students to learn. These methods improve the thinking and creativity that lead to defining and analysing the problem of supporting programming learning to devise ideal solutions. Approaches such as visualising the code or using a memory diagram to trace the program’s execution have made a vital contribution to the process of teaching and learning how to program. The purpose of this paper is to provide an …

Selling Protest In The News? Movement-Media Framing Of Occupations: An Exploratory Study, Andrew David Butz Jul 2018

Selling Protest In The News? Movement-Media Framing Of Occupations: An Exploratory Study, Andrew David Butz

Dissertations and Theses

Using quantitative content analysis, this study explores social movement (SM) framing in commercial news media -- by comparing how leading newspapers covered prominent protest occupations in 2011 and 2016. More than other SMs, anti-systemic protests like the 2011 Occupy Wall Street (OWS) and the 2016 Malheur Refuge Occupation (MRO) only have partial frame-setting agency, raising a broad theory question (to inform the research questions below): If SMs and media relate as interacting systems, are protest news frames more movement- or more media- driven; and do media not just enable but also constrain SMs?

With the movement-media theory question above, the …

(Re)Designing The Debate Tournament For Civic Life, John J. Rief Jul 2018

(Re)Designing The Debate Tournament For Civic Life, John J. Rief

Speaker & Gavel

The presence of public audiences in competitive contest rounds, a central feature of early intercollegiate debate practice, was largely eliminated during the ascent of the tournament model over the last century. However, audience participation in tournament designs has recently become a topic of conversation among those committed to transforming the activity in line with the emerging civic and public attitudes of higher education. Given the preliminary nature of this conversation, we currently lack robust models for and scholarly reflection about the role audiences might play within the calcified and secluded structures of tournament debating. Building on recent work in American …
