Counternarratives Of Community-Based Advocacy As Sources Of Knowledge For Urban Planning, Monique López, Pueblo Planning, Adonia Lugo, Omar Vargas, Allison Mattheis
eJournal of Public Affairs
Informed by the deliberate work of advocates to address the positioning of community voices as subaltern, the last three decades have seen a growing push for alternative approaches to urban planning. In order to foster the culturally competent use and development of public space in the United States, urban planning education must include a focus on the centrality and persistence of racist ideologies and the current fueling of anti-immigrant sentiments that challenge the idea of who “belongs” in communities. Even planners informed by critical theories of participatory practice face challenges working within systems based on positivist and Western-dominant epistemologies. In …
Cultural Research To Action: Course Design For Intersectional Cultural Competency, Dmitri S. Seals
Cultural Research To Action: Course Design For Intersectional Cultural Competency, Dmitri S. Seals
eJournal of Public Affairs
Intersectional understandings of diversity present a challenge to the traditional pursuit of cultural competency in public affairs, demanding an approach that accounts for the dynamism and internal diversity of cultural categories. Programs aimed at preparing future public affairs professionals to succeed in diverse settings must have pedagogical tools that equip their students to learn from and engage with intersectional cultural difference. This field report analyzes a pilot project in cultural sociology—a sub-discipline rarely associated with public affairs practice—that used discourse analysis, participatory action research, and intersectionality theory to engage students in designing culturally competent programs and policies. Reviewing current models …

Beyond America: Cross-National Context And The Impact Of Religious Versus Secular Organizational Membership On Self-Rated Health, Laura Upeniks, Steven L. Foy, Andrew Miles
Sociology Faculty Publications
Studies using data from the United States suggest religious organizational involvement is more beneficial for health than secular organizational involvement. Extending beyond the United States, we assess the relative impacts of religious and secular organizational involvement on self-rated health cross-nationally, accounting for national-level religious context. Analyses of data from 33 predominantly Christian countries from the 2005–2008 World Values Survey reveal that active membership in religious organizations is positively associated with self-rated health. This association’s magnitude is higher than the magnitude of associations between many memberships in secular organizations and health. The positive association between involvement in religious organization and self-rated …
Transformative Action: A Theoretical Framework For Breaking New Ground, Alexis Jemal, Sarah Bussey
Transformative Action: A Theoretical Framework For Breaking New Ground, Alexis Jemal, Sarah Bussey
eJournal of Public Affairs
Developed by Paulo Freire, critical consciousness (CrC) is a philosophical, theoretical, and practice-based framework encompassing an individual’s understanding of and action against the structural roots of inequity and violence. This article explores divergent CrC scholarship regarding CrC theory and practice; provides an in-depth review of inconsistencies within the CrC “action” domain; and, in an effort to resolve discrepancies within the existing CrC literature, presents a new construct—transformative action (TA)—and details the process of TA development. Comprising three hierarchical levels of action (critical, avoidant, and destructive) for each level of the socio-ecosystem, TA serves as a model for community-based practitioners, such …

Mindfulness, Motivation, And Intercultural Competence Among Faculty And Staff: Examining Impacts Of The Global Partner Certificate Workshops, Shengli Dong, Aleksandra Nesic, Christina Colgary, Jadelyn Martinez, Jessika Guerard
eJournal of Public Affairs
There is a great need to foster the intercultural competence of faculty and staff within higher education. Faculty and staff need to provide opportunities for holistic engagement to international students in order to enhance diversity benefits; however, the factors that elucidate intercultural competence warrant investigation. This article discusses in detail a study examining the correlations of motivation, mindfulness, and intercultural competence among faculty and staff through the framework of self-determination theory. Participants included 18 faculty and staff who completed Global Partner Certificate workshops offered at a large public university in the southeastern United States. The workshops included a 12-hour training …

Neoliberalism And The School Choice Movement In The United States, Lianne M.A. Mulder
Neoliberalism And The School Choice Movement In The United States, Lianne M.A. Mulder
MA Research Paper
This paper investigates the role of neoliberalism in the advocacy for and implementation of school choice in the United States. It applies conflict theory of education to the school choice debate and uses post-Katrina New Orleans as a case study of school choice implementation. It concludes that neoliberal and like-minded think-tanks, foundations, and lobby groups are involved in the advocacy for school choice in the United States because it assists them in furthering their goals of influencing whose values and ideals will be taught and whose children will land the desired jobs; thereby maintaining the capitalist status quo and enabling …
Addressing Youth Perceptions Of Harm In Marijuana Prevention Programming, Kristen J. Quinlan, Maria Valenti, Gisela Rots, Joshua Esrick, Kimberly Dash
Addressing Youth Perceptions Of Harm In Marijuana Prevention Programming, Kristen J. Quinlan, Maria Valenti, Gisela Rots, Joshua Esrick, Kimberly Dash
Journal of Applied Research on Children: Informing Policy for Children at Risk
The inverse relationship between perception of harm and substance use is clearly supported by decades of research – youth are less likely to engage in substance use when it is seen as harmful. However, despite strong theoretical and practical reasons to focus on perception of harm as a change-producer in prevention programming, little is known about what is effective in impacting perception of harm for youth marijuana use.
To investigate the impact of existing prevention efforts designed to influence youth perception of harm and, consequently, youth marijuana use, we reviewed seven privately- or federally-funded online registries (e.g., Blueprints for Healthy …

Rural Sense: Value, Heritage, And Sensory Landscapes: Developing A Design-Oriented Approach To Mapping For Healthier Landscapes, Judith Van Der Elst, Heather Richards-Rissetto, Lily Díaz-Kommonen
Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications
Landscape design needs a novel value system centred on human experience of the landscape rather than simply on economic value. Design-oriented research allows us to shift the focus from mechanistic paradigms towards new sensemaking approaches that value both the sensual and the cognitive in human experience. To move in this direction, we investigate cultural and natural aspects of sensory experience in rural landscapes, arguing that: (1) rural (non-urban) regions offer diverse sensory experiences for optimising human health; and (2) spatial interconnectedness between rural and urban areas means that healthy rural regions are critical for urban development. Our key argument is …
Childrearing Stages And Work–Family Conflict: The Role Of Job Demands And Resources, Kei Nomaguchi, Marshal Neal Fettro
Childrearing Stages And Work–Family Conflict: The Role Of Job Demands And Resources, Kei Nomaguchi, Marshal Neal Fettro
Sociology Faculty Publications
Objective
The authors examine the role of job characteristics in influencing variation in mothers' work–family conflict by childrearing stage.
Background
Although researchers generally contend that having younger children is related to greater work–family conflict, examination of this association is limited.
Method
Using data from the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development Study of Early Child Care and Youth Development (N = 774), we conduct fixed effects models to examine variations in mothers' job characteristics across four waves when their children are 6 months old, 15 months old, third graders, and fifth graders and their links to variations …
A Longitudinal Examination Of Factors Associated With Network Bridging Among Ymsm: Implications For Hiv Prevention, Dexter R. Voisin
A Longitudinal Examination Of Factors Associated With Network Bridging Among Ymsm: Implications For Hiv Prevention, Dexter R. Voisin
Faculty Scholarship
Social-environmental factors may be associated with social network stability, which has implications for HIV acquisition. However, the link between social-environmental factors, network composition and HIV risk has not been examined previously among a city-population based sample of young Black men who have sex with Men (YBMSM). Respondent driven sampling was used to recruit a cohort of 618 YMBSM. Respondents were evaluated at baseline, 9 and 18 months beginning June 2013. A logistic regression model was used to assess the relationship between bridging (i.e. having non-redundant contacts in one’s network, indicating network instability) and social-environmental factors and HIV risk factors between …

Humanitarian Islam, Engy Abdelkader
Humanitarian Islam, Engy Abdelkader
Pace International Law Review
In the aftermath of mass shootings by violent extremists and amid increasing anti-Muslim prejudice and discrimination, many Muslim Americans have responded to these and other social, legal, and political developments with philanthropic initiatives inspired by orthodox Islamic teachings. This humanitarian impulse in Islam, which has shaped the religion since its founding, is relatively unknown to non-Muslim Americans. Humanitarian Islam is defined here in largely oppositional terms to so-called the “radical Islam.” In contrast to the violence, aggression, death, and destruction commonly associated with “radical Islam,” selfless volunteerism, benevolence, altruism, and charitable giving in service to others are characteristic of humanitarian …

A Weight–Related Growth Mindset Increases Negative Attitudes Towards Obese People, Nic Hooper, Alison Crumpton, Michael D. Robinson, Brian P. Meier
A Weight–Related Growth Mindset Increases Negative Attitudes Towards Obese People, Nic Hooper, Alison Crumpton, Michael D. Robinson, Brian P. Meier
Psychology Faculty Publications
In implicit personality theory, people with entity views or a fixed mindset perceive characteristics (e.g., intelligence) as uncontrollable, whereas people with incremental views or a growth mindset perceive characteristics as controllable. In addition to other benefits, the literature sometimes suggests that having a growth mindset will protect against prejudice, which the current two studies examine in terms of negative attitudes towards obese people. Participants (total N = 501) were randomly assigned to complete a questionnaire assessing attitudes towards an obese or non-obese person and a self-theory questionnaire also assessed ideas about body weight. People with a growth mindset, and not …
Impact Of Multiplex Relationships On Rural Science Education.Pdf, Peter Knutson, Dawn Del Carlo
Impact Of Multiplex Relationships On Rural Science Education.Pdf, Peter Knutson, Dawn Del Carlo
The Rural Educator
Relationships play a strong role in rural communities and education, and multiplex relationships – relationships that can overlap due to multiple contexts of interaction in a rural school – are unique to the rural setting. This study focused on multiplex relationships and their impact on science classroom performance, as measured by science standardized test scores, through the lens of Social Capital Theory. Quantitative survey results from rural science teachers regarding number of student relationships and state-based science test scores were correlated. Additionally, qualitative survey answers from a subset of respondents were used to construct a more complete picture of the …
Our Town: Articulating Place Meanings And Attachments In St. Johns Using Resident-Employed Photography, Lauren Elizabeth Morrow Everett
Our Town: Articulating Place Meanings And Attachments In St. Johns Using Resident-Employed Photography, Lauren Elizabeth Morrow Everett
Dissertations and Theses
The St. Johns neighborhood of North Portland is known for its strong regional identity, working class character, and diversity. Portland as a whole has experienced a major socioeconomic shift in the last ten years, and these changes are hitting St. Johns particularly hard. My research seeks to identify the place meanings that underpin sense of place, place attachment, and processes of attachment formation, among residents of the neighborhood. My research questions are: What are the objects of attachment? Why (the place meanings that underpin attachment)? And how (through what processes are attachments formed)? In what ways are the "why" and …

Latina/O Students In K-12 Schools: A Synthesis Of Empirical Research On Factors Influencing Academic Achievement, Amanda Taggart
Teacher Education and Leadership Faculty Publications
The purpose of this systematic review is to provide a comprehensive synthesis and analysis of the empirical evidence to date on the factors related to Latina/o student academic achievement in the country’s increasingly Latina/o K-12 schools. Factors found to be related to academic achievement outcomes (e.g., grades, test scores, high school completion, college enrollment) for Latina/o students include a combination of (1) demographic variables, (2) sociocultural variables, (3) academic experiences, (4) psychological variables, and (5) school/institutional variables. In addition, this research synthesis identified several methodological trends in the research on Latina/o student success.
