Green Burials: The Deinstitutionalization Of Death, A A. Bouverette 3906173 Aug 2018

Green Burials: The Deinstitutionalization Of Death, A A. Bouverette 3906173

The Hilltop Review

Abstract

Methods for preparing and burying the dead vary widely across time and cultures, but an enduring theme persists in ritualistic deposition. Some forms of disposal include inhumation, cremation, entombment, sea submersion and methods of exposure (Spellman, 2014). For many cultures, an exposed corpse or one that had not been given ritualized funeral rites was viewed as improper or neglectful. Exposed or rotting bodies is also associated with disease and illness (Feagan. 2007).

The transition from natural burial to preservative practices is a recent invention created in response to mass death during a wartime period (Stowe, Schmidt & Green, 2001). …

“People You May (Or May Not) Know:” Usage Intensity, Status Motivation, And Intimate Self-Disclosure As Predictors Of Bridging Social Capital On Facebook, Ryan Paul Castillo 2209867

The Hilltop Review

Drawing on the concept of social capital, this study examines the impact of usage intensity, status motivations, and intimate public self-disclosure on Facebook users’ informational access and feelings of general social support. Survey data collected from a random sample of undergraduate Facebook users (n=583) were used to test several hypotheses predicting perceptions of bridging social capital. A multivariate ordinary least squares (OLS) regression model revealed significant positive associations between both Facebook usage intensity and status motivations, and perceptions of bridging social capital, while no significant relationships were found between various forms of intimate self-disclosure in public channels and perceptions of …

Refugee Socio-Cultural Integration And Peaceful Co-Existence In Uganda, Sharon Sylvia Nambuya, Joseph Okumu, Ronald Pagnucco Aug 2018

Refugee Socio-Cultural Integration And Peaceful Co-Existence In Uganda, Sharon Sylvia Nambuya, Joseph Okumu, Ronald Pagnucco

The Journal of Social Encounters

The dramatic increase in the number of refugees globally has led to increased attention to conflicts between refugees and communities in the countries where they have sought refuge. Three durable solutions are used for the placement of refugees: voluntary repatriation to their home country if conditions there permit; permanent settlement and local integration in the receiving country; and resettlement in a third country. Permanent settlement and local integration is seen as good option although there still exists gaps in understanding the integration process and if it leads to peaceful co-existence between refugees and members of the host community. This study …

Gender Identity And Justice In Nigeria: An Appraisal Of Women In Lagos State, Oluwaseun Olanrewaju

The Journal of Social Encounters

This paper examines gender identity and justice in the light of gender discrimination against women in Nigeria. Through the use of primary research, with the specific focus on women resident in Lagos state, the findings of this research show that in Nigeria, women are often considered as subservient to men. This paper therefore asserts that there is an urgent need to address gender inequality in order to create a gender balanced society. Furthermore, the paper concludes that gender equality will translate to justice for women and empower them to contribute positively to the overall development of Nigeria.

Perspectives On Natural Philosophy, Stanley N. Salthe Aug 2018

Perspectives On Natural Philosophy, Stanley N. Salthe

Publications and Research

This paper presents a viewpoint on natural philosophy focusing on the organization of substance, as well as its changes as invited by the Second Law of thermodynamics. Modes of change are pointed to as definitive of levels of organization; these include physical, chemical, and biological modes of change. Conceptual uses of the subsumptive hierarchy format are employed throughout this paper. Developmental change in dissipative structures is examined in some detail, generating an argument for the use of final causality in studies of natural systems. Considerations of ‘internalism’ in science are presented along the way.

"We Just Treat Everyone The Same": Lgbtq Aquatic Management Strategies, Barriers And Implementation, Austin R. Anderson, Eric Knee, William D. Ramos, Tiffany Monique Quash

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

This study examined the management of aquatic venues in a number of areas (facilities, programming, human resource management, marketing, policies) as it pertains to LGBTQ participants and participation. The study utilized in-depth semi-structured interviews with 16 aquatic managers to examine steps that are currently being taken (or lack thereof) when it comes to creating environments that are perceived to be open, or closed, to LGBTQ participants. A grounded theory-based process of data collection and analysis resulted in emergent themes. These themes included: (a) gendered spaces, (b) non-aquatic initiatives, (c) staff knowledgeability, (d) departmental and organizational mission, (e) aquatic-specific programming and …

Similarities And Differences In Western Media Portrayals Of The Greek Economic Crisis: A Qualitative Analysis Of The Guardian And The New York Times' Summer 2015 Coverage Of The Greek Economic Crisis, Tryfon Boukouvidis Aug 2018

Similarities And Differences In Western Media Portrayals Of The Greek Economic Crisis: A Qualitative Analysis Of The Guardian And The New York Times' Summer 2015 Coverage Of The Greek Economic Crisis, Tryfon Boukouvidis

LSU Master's Theses

This study examines newspaper coverage of the Greek economic crisis in the summer of 2015 by exploring attribution of responsibility to the actors involved in the crisis. I performed a qualitative content analysis on 114 news stories, 59 from The Guardian and 55 from The New York Times. Prior literature has indicated that American newspapers tend to present economic crisis from an elite perspective, which could distort public opinion to reflect elite views. Following previous studies, I analyzed the news stories in terms of how they used the responsibility frame of coverage of the Greeks and their creditors. The …

Toxic Enactments: Materializing Estrogen And Regulation Under Canada's Food And Drugs Act, 1939-1953, Lara Jessie Tessaro

LLM Theses

The study describes how estrogen was standardized in Canada, in the 1940s and early 1950s, under the Food and Drugs Act. Contributing to interdisciplinary conversations, it provides an empirical case of how regulatory practices enact material realities. Using archival material, the study describes how estrogen was achieved, in part, through heterogeneous practices of the Canadian Committee on Pharmacopoeial Standards, National Health, and government solicitors. These regulators disagreed on whether, how, and by whom estrogens should be standardized. Rather than resolve these disagreements, Canada enacted multiple regulations purporting to standardize estrogen, and government solicitors practiced techniques of validating to render the …

The Micro-Politics Of A New Mental Condition: Legitimization In Maladaptive Daydreamers' Discourse, Orit Bershtling Ph.D., Eli Somer Ph.D. Aug 2018

The Micro-Politics Of A New Mental Condition: Legitimization In Maladaptive Daydreamers' Discourse, Orit Bershtling Ph.D., Eli Somer Ph.D.

The Qualitative Report

This study illuminates legitimization efforts in the discourse of individuals who suffer from excessive, uncontrolled daydreaming: a contested mental condition that has not yet been recognized by the medical establishment. It aims to explore the rhetorical maneuvers employed by these “Maladaptive Daydreamers” in 35 email exchanges with the second author and two petitions, submitted to the American Psychiatric Association and to the UK Parliament, with a demand for recognition. Our analysis, anchored theoretically and methodologically in Critical Discourse Analysis, identified several verbal strategies employed by the participants to persuade their interlocutors about the realness of their suffering. The main strategies …

Opinions As Colors: A Visual Analysis Technique For Modest Focus Group Transcripts, Oladokun -. Omojola -, Oscar Odiboh, Lanre Amodu

The Qualitative Report

A major concern in focus group research is how transcripts are analyzed. One way of resolving the issues involved is the use of images, in the place of words or numbers, to capture discussion outcomes. This work upgrades the visual perspective and uses colors to represent discussants’ opinions about leadership while the strength of those opinions is illustrated by some levels of transparency of those same colors. This model simplifies the expertise needed by enabling speedy determination of discussants’ submissions even as the transparencies, in the form of shades or tints, reveal the gravity of those submissions.

What Open-Ended Comments Reveal: An Analysis Of A Clinical Translational Science Institute’S Annual Surveys, Linda S. Behar-Horenstein, Xiaoying Feng

The Qualitative Report

Analyzing open-ended responses can provide insight regarding participants’ experiences or illuminate organizational issues. The purpose of this study was to qualitatively analyze 1096 open-ended responses to a longitudinal survey and report patterns observed across participants. Word frequency, text search and matrix coding were used to analyze the data. Thematic differences were noted by the college group denoting the participant’s primary appointment. Although perceived gaps between expectations and service delivery were expected, participants’ statements pointed out informational inaccuracies or an absence of awareness. The inherent richness and insight of the analysis yielded complexities, otherwise not discernable using quantitative analyses. The …

The Relationship Between Core Knowledge Sequence Curriculum And Smarter Balance Assessment English Language Arts Scores, Melissa Meyer

Doctor of Education (EdD)

The purpose of this study was to examine student achievement as measured by the English language arts (ELA) Smarter Balance Assessment (SBAC) between students who were taught the Core Knowledge Sequence curriculum and students taught the Houghton Mifflin Harcourt’s Journeys curriculum. The 11,493 participants were third through sixth grade students in the 2014-2015, 2015-2016, and 2016-2017 school years. The study used a multiple regression model to examine the extent to which the students’ gender, ethnicity, socioeconomic status (SES), disability status, English language learner (ELL) status, and curriculum predicted SBAC ELA scores. The findings of this study suggest that curriculum did …

Opencrimemapping.Org: An Online Tool For Visualizing Crime, Michael Crowder, Lauren Darr, Gerardo Garza, Brent Allen

SMU Data Science Review

In this paper we present a method for creating geographic visualizations of criminal incidents using open data and open-source software. The motivation for this method is to provide law enforcement agencies (LEAs) and interested citizens an affordable and relatively easy way to start analyzing geospatial data. The National Incident Based Reporting System (NIBRS) is a national standard for LEA incident reporting going into effect for all 18,000 U.S. LEAs in 2021. This project uses the Dallas Police Department's publicly available, NIBRS-style, incident data to develop a geovisual analysis tool called opencrimemapping.org.
