Bringing Employment First To Scale: State Of The Science As A Knowledge Translation Strategy, John Kramer, Caro Narby, Thinkwork! At The Institute For Community Inclusion At Umass Boston

ThinkWork! Publications

To synthesize our findings to date, the ThinkWork team at ICI developed 3 draft papers that captured the core themes from our RRTC on Advancing Employment for Individuals with Intellectual and/or Developmental Disabilities (IDD). We asked experts in the field to weigh in on these papers, and then broadly disseminated the papers to multiple audiences. Our primary goal was to engage with a diverse group with a range of perspectives and experiences, including fellow researchers, state agency employees, rehabilitation providers, and individuals with IDD and their families. To reach this goal we used a Knowledge Translation (KT) process. KT has …

Surviving The Arab Uprisings: Political Regimes And State Responses, Hood Ahmed Sep 2018

Surviving The Arab Uprisings: Political Regimes And State Responses, Hood Ahmed

Theses and Dissertations

The Arab uprisings threatened authoritarian states across the Arab world with unprecedented levels of mobilization. The nature of these challenges, the states’ responses and the outcomes have been, however, markedly uneven. In accounting for this divergence, while some approaches have examined the structural preconditions for transitions, others have emphasized the impact of interactions between different political actors. This thesis draws on both approaches through examining how the state’s institutional structure shapes the opportunities and constraints of states in employing different authoritarian strategies. It examines why and how different regimes have used different authoritarian strategies to survive and stabilize. In responding …

Narrating Dignity: Islamophobia, Racial Profiling, And National Security Before The Supreme Court Of Canada, Reem Bahdi Sep 2018

Narrating Dignity: Islamophobia, Racial Profiling, And National Security Before The Supreme Court Of Canada, Reem Bahdi

Osgoode Hall Law Journal

Captain Javed Latif, a Muslim Canadian pilot from Pakistan, was denied pilot refresher training by Bombardier Aerospace Training Center in Canada based on information received from US national security officials. Almost 12 years after Captain Javed Latif’s ordeal began, the Supreme Court of Canada affirmed a decision by the Quebec Court of Appeal overturning a finding by a Quebec Human Rights Tribunal that Latif had been racially profiled. The Supreme Court of Canada’s decision ultimately exposes and perpetuates a deep unwillingness to challenge the stereotyping of Muslims as terrorists in Canada. In response, this commentary seeks to excavate Captain Latif’s …

Relative Deprivation, Justice Perceptions And Forgiveness Of Victims In Poland And Uganda, Kamila Anna Krygier Sep 2018

Relative Deprivation, Justice Perceptions And Forgiveness Of Victims In Poland And Uganda, Kamila Anna Krygier

Lingnan Theses (MPhil & PhD)

This study examines the question of how persisting economic and social inequalities between perpetrators and victims affect victims’ perceptions of justice and forgiveness in cross-cultural settings by applying the theory of relative deprivation. The hypothesis of this study is that inequalities trigger relative deprivation in victims, which in turn has a direct negative effect on forgiveness as well as an indirect effect via justice perceptions. Relative deprivation is defined as a consequence of a disadvantageous comparison with an outgroup. It includes the cognitive elements of comparing and perceiving the own outcome as less than deserved, as well as the affective …

Homeless Individuals’ Social Construction Of A Park: A Symbolic Interactionist Perspective, Reuben Addo Sep 2018

Homeless Individuals’ Social Construction Of A Park: A Symbolic Interactionist Perspective, Reuben Addo

The Qualitative Report

Individuals experiencing homelessness and housed residents have increasingly been in conflict over the use of public spaces, which has led to efforts to regulate how individuals experiencing homelessness use public spaces. However, the discourses around the use of public parks seem to value housed residents over homeless individuals. How individuals experiencing homelessness construct meanings of public spaces has not been given adequate attention in the literature. Drawing on a symbolic interactionist theoretical framework and grounded theory methodology, the researcher conducted 10 semi-structured interviews on how individuals experiencing homelessness construct meanings of a public park. Participants ascribed instrumental and intangible meanings …

Researcher, Analyze Thyself, Johnny Saldana

The Qualitative Report

This article attempts to answer the phenomenological question, “What does it mean to be a qualitative researcher?” and an ancillary question, “What does ‘making meaning’ mean?” The author, in collaboration with selected participants at the 2018 The Qualitative Report and the International Institute for Qualitative Methodology’s Qualitative Research Methods conferences, proposes that research is devotion. Three major categories or components of devotion are purpose (personal and professional validation), belonging (communal grounding), and meaning (an enriched life). Ten subcategories or “elements of style” as qualitative researchers include: meticulous vigilance of details, unyielding resiliency, visionary reinvention, social savvy, humble vulnerability, representational responsibility, …

The Qualitative Report

In Planning a Community Oral History Project (Barbara W. Summer, Nancy MacKay, and Mary Kay Quinlan), the second volume in the Community Oral History Toolkit series, readers are presented with the ethical, methodological, and legal frameworks which guide successful and respectful community oral history projects. The authors of this review present this review as an oral history of our reading, composed by readers representing different viewpoints and positionalities. We do so in an attempt to explore the book’s potential audiences and consider the applicability of its advice to varied readers, as well as to embrace the ethical and methodological ideas …

Newcomer Women And The Workforce: A Critical Policy Analysis Of Employment And Labour Legislation In Ontario, Anuja Jeeva Sep 2018

Newcomer Women And The Workforce: A Critical Policy Analysis Of Employment And Labour Legislation In Ontario, Anuja Jeeva

Social Justice and Community Engagement

This research aims to explore the potential impact of changes in Ontario labour legislation on newcomer women in the workforce, particularly with the changes to both the Employment Standards Act, 2000 and the Labour Relations Act, 1995, under the 2017 legislation of the Fair Workplaces, Better Jobs Act (Bill 148). The research stems from the concern that newcomer women are overrepresented in low wage, temporary, precarious employment, and is informed by studies about the issues newcomer women face in finding stable, secure employment, and the societal forces involved in shaping policy intended to address those issues. The purpose of the …

Issues Of Employment And Competitiveness Of Graduates Of Higher Educational Institutions, A.A Salimov

Economics and Innovative Technologies

In the article the available practical experience of work of leading universities of the republic in the field of employment of students and graduates is considered. Disproportions in the development of labor markets and educational services, caused during the period of deepening market reforms, led to an imbalance between the structure of supply and demand for labor, which caused difficulties for graduates of higher educational institutions in the search for the first job.

Digging Them Out Alive, Michael Millemann, Rebecca Bowman Rivas, Elizabeth Smith Sep 2018

Digging Them Out Alive, Michael Millemann, Rebecca Bowman Rivas, Elizabeth Smith

Faculty Scholarship

From 2013-2018, we taught a collection of interrelated law and social work clinical courses, which we call “the Unger clinic.” This clinic was part of a major, multi-year criminal justice project, led by the Maryland Office of the Public Defender. The clinic and project responded to a need created by a 2012 Maryland Court of Appeals decision, Unger v. State. It, as later clarified, required that all Maryland prisoners who were convicted by juries before 1981—237 older, long-incarcerated prisoners—be given new trials. This was because prior to 1981 Maryland judges in criminal trials were required to instruct the jury …
