Nativism As The Engine Of Fear Toward “Illegal” Immigrants, Amilie Cai
Nativism As The Engine Of Fear Toward “Illegal” Immigrants, Amilie Cai
Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters
Contemporary concerns about “illegal” immigration reveal deep-seated anxieties about race, cultural, and national identity in the United States. In this paper, I examine how xenophobia, media consumption, and Christian nationalism collectively shape fear of illegal immigrants. I build upon previous literature, such as the Group Threat Theory, which posits that dominant groups mobilize to preserve social hierarchies when their status is threatened, and the Agenda-Setting Theory, which emphasizes the media’s power to shape public perceptions. Using Wave 11 of the Chapman Survey of American Fears–a nationally representative sample of U.S. adults collected in 2025–I provide a comparative analysis of these …
Opening The Door Of The Celluloid Closet, Melissa Hernandez
Opening The Door Of The Celluloid Closet, Melissa Hernandez
Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters
While watching the documentary, The Celluloid Closet, I was instantly intrigued by how queer people and cinema mixed. Going as far back to the black and white, silent films era, queer people have been used as comedic relief, but not in an appealing way. Constantly being the butt of the joke, disregard for queer people became so normalized that certain tropes started popping up in cinema. One trope that we can still see be used frequently in today’s films is the “bury your gays” trope (also known as the “dead lesbians syndrome”) where queer characters in cinema are not …
Exploring The Potential For Data Storytelling Practices In Healthcare Communication, Shafaq Zehra, Naomi Jacobs, Dan Richards
Exploring The Potential For Data Storytelling Practices In Healthcare Communication, Shafaq Zehra, Naomi Jacobs, Dan Richards
IASDR Conference Series
The key challenges associated with the design of doctor-patient communication mainly include time constraints, cultural and language barriers and health literacy of the patients accessing care. The implications of the gaps in effective doctor-patient communication may lead to lack of compliance to treatment, weakened rapport building and lack of trust in the healthcare services. This paper qualitatively explores the context of the challenges associated with doctor-patient communication from a health care provider perspective. The main themes identified by in-depth interviews with clinicians were issues related to lack of trust, validity of patient’s information, lack of patient engagement and empowerment, and …

South Korea, as the fastest-aging country in the world, occupies a critical position in aging research. Designing for older adults requires a multidimensional understanding; however, existing studies on design principles for aging have tended to adopt functionalist approaches focused primarily on physical and cognitive decline. In response, this study proposes design principles that center on values systems rather than offering directly prescriptive or procedural guidance. Specifically, we introduce culturally responsive principles grounded in Korea’s unique socio cultural context. Drawing on a co-design workshop with Korean older adults and caregivers, our analysis engages narratives through the lenses of Korea’s rapid industrialization, …
Reimagining Speculative Design For Inclusion: An Narrative-Based Prototype For Civic Participation, Sandy Claes, Gitte Vande Graveele, Erica Bol
Reimagining Speculative Design For Inclusion: An Narrative-Based Prototype For Civic Participation, Sandy Claes, Gitte Vande Graveele, Erica Bol
IASDR Conference Series
Speculative design has the potential to foster civic reflection but often remains inaccessible to broader audiences due to its cultural and conceptual complexity. This paper presents a research-through-design (RtD) exploration of how speculative design can become more inclusive by embedding reflection into the narrative experience itself. We redesigned INWARDS, a policy-oriented speculative artefact, by segmenting one of its films and integrating plain-language prompts at key narrative moments and reframing participation as introspection by triggering lightweight, personal reflections. The resulting prototype was deployed in a semi-public setting to explore spontaneous engagement beyond design- savvy audiences. We contribute (1) a design-led exploration …

Unraveling Sociomaterial Trajectories: A Qualitative Network Analysis Of Material, Human, And Nonhuman Entanglement In The Diy Material Project, Kazzmasa Tsujimura, Yasuaki Kakehi
IASDR Conference Series
This paper investigates the sociomateriality of collective creation in a practice-led design project, addressing how entanglement occurs in material-centric processes where it often remains largely unarticulated. Adopting a sociomaterial ontology, we employ qualitative network analysis (QNA) to trace sociomaterial trajectories of the DIY Material project. Our analysis identified 12 diverse actors (e.g., humans, tools, knowledge…) in five clusters, and 22 sociomaterial entanglement 'events' classified into three types: Material Emergence, Social Intra-action, and Sociomaterial Assemblage. The resulting network visualizes these moments, explicating their role in instantiating inter subjective design ideas and contributing to project formation, offering a new methodological lens for …
Place Branding And The Dynamics Of Co-Creation: An Activity Theory Study Of A Creative Marketplace In Chengdu, Mengge Huo, Angus Donald Campbell, Mairi Gunn, Michael Davis
Place Branding And The Dynamics Of Co-Creation: An Activity Theory Study Of A Creative Marketplace In Chengdu, Mengge Huo, Angus Donald Campbell, Mairi Gunn, Michael Davis
IASDR Conference Series
This paper introduces the concepts of creative marketplaces, place branding, and co-creation. Focusing on Jiaozi Market in Chengdu, China, the authors use third-generation Activity Theory (Engeström, 2001) and Digital Ethnography (Pink et al., 2016), to map the roles of market organisers, vendors, and consumers. This reveals contradictions between place branding motives and outcomes across the activity system - tools, rules, community and division of labour - within the creative marketplace. The findings suggest that although creative marketplaces promote a perception of curated place branding, stakeholder participation often remains symbolic, resulting in disjointed and in authentic experiences for all involved.

Traditional linear models of human communication inadequately address emotional and social dynamics in everyday contexts. This study explores speculative futures of interpersonal communication through research through design (RtD) paradigm, integrating participatory co-creation, speculative design, role-playing, and Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI). Situated within the socio-cultural context of China’s one-child generation in the Greater Bay Area (GBA), the research transcends linear transmission metaphors in existing information communication technologies (ICTs) to address subtle interpersonal needs among friends. The study adopts a three-phase methodology, including a co-design workshop to generate speculative scenarios, designer-AI collaboration to refine scenarios, and a role- playing session to generate …
Design When Policy Cycle Begins: Participatory Design As Relational Infrastructuring For Local Policy, Shin Okamoto, Daijiro Mizuno
Design When Policy Cycle Begins: Participatory Design As Relational Infrastructuring For Local Policy, Shin Okamoto, Daijiro Mizuno
IASDR Conference Series
This paper explores the role of design when participatory design intervenes more deeply in decision- making processes of local policy making. In the domain where design and public policy share common interests, participatory design has been considered effective as a better policy making approach adapted to complex contexts, particularly with municipalities. However, the process from organizations' understanding of participatory design legitimacy to design's involvement in deeper levels of decision-making involves many unpredictable barriers and often takes a long time. Particularly in the front-end phase before setting policy design criteria, unstable relationships exist between designers and policymakers, appearing as conflicts and …

Utilizing Ai-Assisted Service Design To Address The Digitalization Challenges Of Religious Services: A Case Study Of Taoist Temple Service, Shin-Ying Chen, Hsien-Hui Tang
IASDR Conference Series
As digitalization reshapes religious services, Taoist temples in Taiwan face challenges involving cultural heritage, ritual experience, and institutional coordination. Existing studies often focus on the technological or sociological aspects of digital religion but rarely examine how design practice balances institutional efficiency with cultural sensitivity. This study explores how service design can clarify the systemic complexity of Taoist service transformation while addressing both institutional and cultural contexts throughout digital transition and implementation. Using a qualitative case study of a Taiwanese Taoist temple, the research applies the Triple Diamond Model of service design to analyze the cultural complexity embedded in people, processes, …

From Screen To Street: Insights For Autonomous Mobility Design From Movies, Xinyan Yu, Tram Thi Minh Tran, Marius Hoggenmüller, Martin Tomitsch
IASDR Conference Series
Fictional media, such as movies, offer a rich speculative lens for exploring people’s interaction with and the societal implications of future technologies. In this paper, we apply this lens to the domain of autonomous mobility, mapping a speculative landscape to inspire the design of future autonomous mobility systems. We systematically examine 36 autonomous mobility systems depicted across 31 movies and construct a speculative landscape that reveals how these systems are imagined in terms of interaction design, agency, and their embeddedness within broader societal contexts. This analysis offers design researchers a resource for inspiration and critical reflection, highlighting opportunities to reimagine …
Confucian Ritual Space As More-Than-Human Design: Reframing The Zaojing In The Forbidden City, Ning Gao, Yongsheng Tong, An Sui, Hui Zeng
Confucian Ritual Space As More-Than-Human Design: Reframing The Zaojing In The Forbidden City, Ning Gao, Yongsheng Tong, An Sui, Hui Zeng
IASDR Conference Series
This article explores the Forbidden City’s zaojing (coffered ceiling) as a case study in reinterpreting ritual space through a “more-than-human” design lens. Bridging Confucian cosmology with contemporary post-humanist design theory, we argue that the imperial Chinese ritual environment was inherently more-than-human-centric, embedding non-human agencies (cosmic forces, mythical beings, and natural elements) into architectural design. We begin by examining Confucian cosmology and imperial architecture, highlighting how the built environment embodied a cosmological order beyond human-centered needs. We then outline a theoretical framework drawing on more-than- human design principles and spatial semiotics to understand architecture as an active mediator between human and …

It analyzes the ongoing interactions between communities and their environment, examining factors such as infrastructure, visual representations (e.g., frescoes in churches), and local practices in the provinces of Pichincha, Cotopaxi, and Tungurahua—areas known for their proximity to active volcanoes—with a particular focus on how these elements shape collective intelligence and coping strategies. By identifying current conditions, opportunities and obstacles, and interpreting the core challenges experienced …
Beyond Prefixes And Suffixes: A Systematic Literature Review Of Doctoral Education In Art And Design, Luke Feast
Beyond Prefixes And Suffixes: A Systematic Literature Review Of Doctoral Education In Art And Design, Luke Feast
IASDR Conference Series
This systematic review examines the literature on doctoral education in art and design. We analysed 1,086 publications to categorise different approaches to art and design doctorates. Our analysis reveals three distinct doctoral types aligned with different educational aims: knowledge development doctorates emphasising systematic research and theoretical contribution; social utility doctorates focusing on professional practice and practical application; and individual development doctorates prior it ising artistic self-discovery and creative expression. The apparent confusion in the field, reflected in debates about terminology such as "research through practice" versus "practice-based research," stems from fundamental disagreements about educational purposes rather than mere semantic differences. …

Airing Data Through Materiality: A Situated Design Approach To Data Physicalization, Annemarie Piscaer, Kristof Vrancken, Sandy Claes, Michel Van Dartel, Michel Van Dartel
IASDR Conference Series
Air pollution is both largely invisible and extensively monitored, making it a data-intensive issue that presents significant challenges for public engagement. Its abstract and often intangible nature makes it difficult for people to relate to or understand. Designers can play a role by transforming abstract (air pollution) data into tangible, context-sensitive artifacts—a practice known as data physicalization. This paper introduces “airing” as a design approach to situated data physicalization. Rather than relying on detached design approaches, airing argues for situated, real-world engagement with data. Airing data through materiality highlights the active role of materials in embedding data within the physical …
Maps That Matter: Design As A Translation Tool In Industrial Sustainability Transitions, Delphine Wang Leger, Annie Gentès
Maps That Matter: Design As A Translation Tool In Industrial Sustainability Transitions, Delphine Wang Leger, Annie Gentès
IASDR Conference Series
This paper explores how organizational design can support sustainability transitions in complex industrial contexts, through the development of situated, visual tools. The study is based on a one- year design intervention within a railway maintenance facility in France, aiming to improve industrial waste sorting practices following the departure of the site's waste manager. Drawing from system design, service design, and Actor-Network Theory, the project approaches waste management not as a technical issue, but as a socio-material system of routines, infrastructures, and tacit knowledge. To navigate this complexity, the design team produced a series of hybrid documents— field enquiry maps, analog …

Reimagining Death And Rituals Through Design: Memorial Diamond Jewellery As A Speculative Probe, Yiwen Cheng, Jie Sun
Reimagining Death And Rituals Through Design: Memorial Diamond Jewellery As A Speculative Probe, Yiwen Cheng, Jie Sun
IASDR Conference Series
Death remains one of the most enduring cultural taboos, often met with silence and avoidance across both Western and Eastern societies. Although design research has increasingly engaged with death through the lens of thanatosensitive design, it has largely focused on supporting the bereaved, leaving the perspectives and agency of the dying themselves under explored. This study explores the memorial diamond as a speculative medium for reimagining death rituals and the relationships between the deceased and the bereaved. Using a research through design approach, we engaged speculative design as both a future-oriented lens and a creative method to examine these phenomena. …

This research presents an intelligent approach to designing an inclusive social assistance systemy. The study employs a combination of literature analysis, in-depth interviews, and quantitative surveys to explore user needs. First, the KANO model was used to identify three attributes—essential, expected, and delightful—which are mapped onto five dimensions of social support: contextual and subjective, emotional and cultural, tools, information, and evaluation support. Second, the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) is used to quantify and rank these needs, thereby leading to the development of a social support system architecture informed by social support theory and generating design strategies. This study proposes a …
From Projecting Futures To Projecting Otherwise: An Anticipatory Archaeology Of Emerging Design Epistemologies, Marc Chataigner
From Projecting Futures To Projecting Otherwise: An Anticipatory Archaeology Of Emerging Design Epistemologies, Marc Chataigner
IASDR Conference Series
How to overcome design ‘defuturing’ effects? Design scholarship argues that design’s adverse contributions stem from its limited projective capacities to reflect about what design designs and the inherent power structures it conceals. Several design approaches emerged to equip designers with philosophical and social science frameworks and overcome design’s ‘defuturing’ effects. Yet, the ability of these theoretical frameworks to fundamentally change design remains debated. This paper contributes to this discussion by exploring the epistemological underpinnings of five approaches – Transition Design, Mission-Oriented Design, Speculative Design, Pluriversal Design, and More-Than- Human Design. We develop an ‘anticipatory archaeology’ of these theoretical formations to …

Uncovering The Role Of Silence In The Thinking Shift During Design Collaboration: From The Perspective Of Six Thinking Hats, Chu Liang, Ying Hu, Ziling Liang, Jing Qian, Yunxiang Shi, Yiming Bai
IASDR Conference Series
Silence in team collaboration is often viewed as a challenge, as it can indicate either a lack of engagement or moments of deep thinking. This inherent ambiguity can leave team members uncertain about how to interpret and respond. Although previous studies have associated silence with some passive behaviors in design collaboration, the nuanced role of silence during thinking shifts remains insufficiently explored. Building on the six thinking hats, this study confirmed the relationship between silence and thinking shifts and identified specific types of silence corresponding to four distinct shifts of thinking hats. Qualitative analysis further revealed the roles of different …
