Recurring Patterns In Democratic Backsliding: The United States, Hungary, And Israel, Leah Brouda Dec 2025

Recurring Patterns In Democratic Backsliding: The United States, Hungary, And Israel, Leah Brouda

Bates College Journal of Political Studies

Utilizing a three-pronged analysis method, this article argues that not only is democratic backsliding – the degrading quality of democratic institutions in a state – on the rise but that it has frequent recurring themes. These themes are consolidation of executive authority, changes in court power and judicial independence, and election manipulation. Utilizing a combination of public opinion research and indexes such as Freedom House and the Global State of Democracy Index (GSDI), these themes emerge as patterns that are both understood and misconstrued by citizens in each country and of the world. The analysis is based on themes in …

Relational Pedagogy, Student Led Seminars, And Rethinking The World ‘Otherwise’: Evidence From Focus Groups With Ecce Students In An English University, Lisa Moran, Elizabeth Richards Ms Dec 2025

Relational Pedagogy, Student Led Seminars, And Rethinking The World ‘Otherwise’: Evidence From Focus Groups With Ecce Students In An English University, Lisa Moran, Elizabeth Richards Ms

Irish Journal of Applied Social Studies

This paper critically examines findings from a qualitative study of collaborative, student-led seminars framed within relational pedagogy, with undergraduate students on an Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE) degree programme in England. Drawing upon focus groups and observational data, this paper argues for the importance of student-led seminars in ECCE programmes, for improved student’s motivation to learn, teamwork, collaboration skills and peer learning. Significantly, our data reveals that depth engagement in these seminars facilitated students rethinking their worlds ‘otherwise’ where they questioned their own biases and prejudices towards so-called hard to reach and marginalised groups. Utilising a relational pedagogical approach …

The Sociology Of Motherhood In The Workplace, Katharine Batista Dec 2025

The Sociology Of Motherhood In The Workplace, Katharine Batista

The Crown: Syracuse Honors Research Journal

Key themes in this paper include delayed childbearing, uncertain career trajectory, role conflict, and identity blending. These topics highlight the idea that childbearing while possessing a position of power in the workplace is uncommon, which can deter mothers from returning to work after maternity leave. Role conflict is the tension between competing demands of being a mother and a professional. This develops the concept that due to this conflict, women are often expected to adopt a motherly role in the workplace. This extremist ideology surrounding the roles women possess in the workplace, leaves them feeling as though their jobs expect …

Unseen, Unbroken: Black Women In Educational Leadership Overcoming Inequities, Microaggressions, And Invisibility, Inspiring Perseverance And Resilience In Future Black Women Leaders, Angella Baldwin

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

This study explored the challenges that Black women face when pursuing leadership roles in K–12 education, specifically in middle schools. Despite being prepared and eager to lead, Black women are often overlooked and made to feel invisible. Still, we persevere, navigating barriers with determination, faith, and purpose, and continue to support those who follow. Guided by Black Feminist Thought, Endarkened Feminism, and Structural Intersectionality, this study centers Black women’s lived experiences as valid sources of knowledge. It highlights how leadership is shaped by overlapping systems of oppression and resistance, and how it is sustained by prayer, faith in God, and …

The Maroons: The First Black Nationalists Of The Americas, Marquise K. Camp Dec 2025

The Maroons: The First Black Nationalists Of The Americas, Marquise K. Camp

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Maroon communities are seldom discussed in academic discussions about Black nationalism. This suggests that the goals and achievements of the Maroons differed from those of Black nationalists, and that there are no significant historical links between the two. This project argues that Black nationalists and the Maroons are closely related, not only because of their shared roots in the African diaspora but also because they both sought independence and self-governance for Black people. The aims of Black nationalists like Marcus Garvey and Malcolm X closely resemble those of the Maroons. By examining the Maroons alongside Black nationalism, one can gain …

A Case Study Of The Implementation Of Nevada’S Program To Reduce Recidivism Of The State’S Female Prison Population, Lisa C. Levine Dec 2025

A Case Study Of The Implementation Of Nevada’S Program To Reduce Recidivism Of The State’S Female Prison Population, Lisa C. Levine

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Success in public administration is often defined by long-term goals that demonstrate how effective a program or policy is. These long-term goals can take years to measure leading to investment doubts, shifting stakeholder goals, and the sunsetting of programs. There is a need to better understand how short-term and intermediate outcomes of a program can be used to measure success and the role goal orientation of stakeholders play in the implementation. Prison education programming exemplifies this problem as reducing recidivism, a leading goal for these types of programs, take a lifetime to prove. This study examines a female prison education …

Hypervigilance In Emerging Adulthood: The Impact Of Trauma, Milestone Achievement, And Minority Identity, Alexis Rice Dec 2025

Hypervigilance In Emerging Adulthood: The Impact Of Trauma, Milestone Achievement, And Minority Identity, Alexis Rice

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Emerging adulthood is a critical developmental period marked by identity exploration, increased autonomy, and heightened vulnerability to societal pressures. This mixed methods study examined how hypervigilance: a heightened state of alertness often associated with trauma and minority stress- varies by gender, sexual identity, racial trauma exposure, and adulthood milestone achievement among emerging adults aged 18–29. A total of 369 participants completed measures assessing hypervigilance behaviors, adulthood milestone attainment, and trauma exposure. Quantitative analyses revealed that sexual and gender minority (SGM) individuals and cisgender women reported significantly higher levels of hypervigilance compared to their counterparts. Witnessing trauma inflicted on someone of …

Modeling The Mojave: A Multiphase, Mixed Methods Phenomenological Investigation Of Novice Understanding Of A Complex Ecological System, Nicole Juliana Thomas

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

This research explores early college science majors’ conceptions of the Mojave Desert ecosystem as a complex system. A multi-level, explanatory sequential mixed methods design was employed to study college science majors’ understanding of the Mojave Desert ecosystem to better inform science pedagogy. The first level, the quantitative phase of the study, consisted of developing a mathematical representation of twelve ecosystem variables present within the Mojave Desert. The second level, the qualitative phase of the study, consisted of phenomenological semi-structured interviews with 23 early college science majors. The findings of this research suggest that the Mojave Desert operates as a complex, …

Representation Of Motivational Dynamics In School Environments Through Plithogenic N-Superhypergraphs With Family Participation, Nelly Hodelín Amable, Elizabeth Esther Vergel De Salazar, Martha Gloria Martínez Isaac, Olivia Catalina Olavarría Sánchez, Johanna Mariuxi Solís Palma

Neutrosophic Sets and Systems

The study aimed to expand on motivational phenomena that transpires at the school level via Plithogenic n-SuperHyperGraphs via family guidance as one of the dominant features in establishing effective school/motivational environments. The study was conducted via a mixed-method quantitative and qualitative approach, including a questionnaire sent to parents/students, semi-structured interviews with teachers, and an observational approach for the grounded theory. All data were reflected via Plithogenic n-SuperHyperGraphs due to the interconnectedness of phenomena of motivation and pedagogical approaches and family guidance. The analysis of the study suggests that more motivated students are those who have more guided parents as they …

Las Voices: The Impact On Black Young Males In A Critical Mentorship Program In The Las Vegas Valley, Sean C. Tory

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

In America, Black young males face an enormous amount of pressure regarding their social and racial identity. They battle with racial macro/microaggressions, stereotypes, racism, and socialization from various industries and systems. The community organization, King of Jewels, has been able to adopt effective strategies to help Black young males navigate these issues through critical mentorship. This paper will first demonstrate the importance of critical mentorship, Black Racial Identity Development, and will then outline the steps necessary to fill the gaps found in mentorship and Black Racial Identity Development literature. This qualitative study investigates the use of critical mentorship (CM) and …

Laozi’S "Daodejing": A New Translation With Environmentalist Commentary, Steve Hallett Dec 2025

Laozi’S "Daodejing": A New Translation With Environmentalist Commentary, Steve Hallett

Purdue University Press Books

Laozi’s “Daodejing”: A New Translation With Environmentalist Commentary offers a new translation and fresh interpretation of the eighty-one-verse Daodejing, one of the central texts of Eastern philosophy. Likely written during the late Zhou Dynasty between 600–400 BCE, this foundational work is generally attributed to an individual named Laozi, although it is unlikely that any such person actually existed. Here, author Steve Hallett employs contemporary poetic form when translating the document’s approximately 5,000 Chinese characters and provides short analytical essays that illuminate the verses with a specific focus on the teachings they offer about social and environmental sustainability. His examination of …

Teaching And Learning In Envisioning Byu, Volume 1: Foundations And Dreams: A Latter-Day Saint University Educative Perspective, Nicholas P. Bown Dec 2025

Teaching And Learning In Envisioning Byu, Volume 1: Foundations And Dreams: A Latter-Day Saint University Educative Perspective, Nicholas P. Bown

Undergraduate Honors Theses

This thesis outlines the principles of teaching and learning found within Envisioning BYU, Volume 1: Foundations and Dreams, a collection of foundational texts on education at Brigham Young University (BYU). In doing so, this thesis addresses a gap in internal university discourse about how to apply “gospel methodology” to teaching and learning at BYU. This study aims to elucidate these principles based on the assumption they may be of philosophical and practical value within BYU, as well as higher education more generally. In order to identify the salient teaching and learning principles found within Foundations, I conducted a qualitative textual …

Assessing Leadership In Business: A Critical Investigation Of Michelle Obama, Narineh Gevorkian

Honors Scholar Theses

Michelle Obama, the former First Lady of the United States, has emerged as a powerful figure in politics, social advocacy, and public service. During her time in the White House, she worked on initiatives in education, health, and military family support while inspiring millions of people worldwide through her authenticity and advocacy. What distinguishes Michelle Obama as a leader is how her influence comes not from authority or hierarchy, but from connection, empathy, and moral purpose. This approach allows her to lead with authenticity, motivate others, and address inequalities within communities. As the first African American First Lady in US …

One Barrier To Rule Them All: Exploring The Impact Of The Language Barrier For Immigrants In Utah, Reagan Lyman Dec 2025

One Barrier To Rule Them All: Exploring The Impact Of The Language Barrier For Immigrants In Utah, Reagan Lyman

Undergraduate Honors Theses

In this paper, I examine the effect of English-language fluency on immigrant experiences and access to integration or inclusion, using Utah as a case study. I seek to answer the following research questions: does language or region of origin matter in integrating into a new country and learning a new language? Is this effect still relevant in a context like Utah where it is easier to find native-born residents who speak one’s first language? And how does English language ability and the language barrier impact the lives of Asian and Latina immigrants living in Utah? I draw upon 34 in-depth …

A Neutrosophic–Fsqca Framework For Strategic School Management: Superset And Coincidence Analyses Of Student Social Competence, Claudio Ruff Escobar, Jorge Ruff Faundes, Marcelo Ruiz, Cristián Cornejo, Aleksandra Michenkova, Luis Benites, Juliana Vassileva, Alexis Matheu Pérez Dec 2025

A Neutrosophic–Fsqca Framework For Strategic School Management: Superset And Coincidence Analyses Of Student Social Competence, Claudio Ruff Escobar, Jorge Ruff Faundes, Marcelo Ruiz, Cristián Cornejo, Aleksandra Michenkova, Luis Benites, Juliana Vassileva, Alexis Matheu Pérez

Neutrosophic Sets and Systems

This study proposes a neutrosophic–fsQCA framework to analyze strategic school management under conditions of uncertainty. Using data from 20 educators at the Colegio Bicentenario Louis Pasteur in Ecuador, neutrosophic Likert scales were applied to capture perceptions of interpersonal communication (IC), social interaction experiences (SIE), self-esteem and self-efficacy (SS), and their influence on students’ social competence (ECS). The neutrosophic triplets (T, I, F) were transformed into fuzzy sets through a fuzzification process, enabling subsequent Qualitative Comparative Analysis. Two complementary procedures were conducted: a superset analysis to assess necessary and sufficient conditions, and a coincidence analysis to explore overlap among conditions. Results …

Technarrative Model (Ntm) For The Symbolic-Emotional Evaluation Of Architectural Space: A Neutrosophic Multiperspectivism Approach, Jesús Rafael Hechavarría-Hernández, Ana María Padrón-Medina, Erika Ascencio Jordán

Neutrosophic Sets and Systems

This research answers the need to evaluate an architectural space from a non-technical standpoint relative to its symbolism/emotion charge that is not taken into account by the design/planning of such public spaces. This research problem is sociologically relevant as today; architecture does not only dictate the layout of the physical world but also the group existence, sensitivity to experiences and modes of social appropriation. Yet the state-of- the-art literature provides purely professional and empirical avenues of investigation driven by economic/aesthetic value with no pathway for understanding appreciation of ambiguity and the multiple perspectives at play. Thus, a Neutrosophic Technarrative Model …
