Teaching Numeracy For Social Justice: Educational Equity, Esther Isabelle Wilder, Crystal C. Rodriguez, Caterina Shost, Eduardo Vianna, Frank Wang
Numeracy
The special collection, “Teaching Numeracy for Social Justice: Educational Equity,” focuses on how quantitative reasoning (QR) can function as a vehicle for equity, empowerment, and democratic participation. Building on a longstanding tradition that treats numeracy as inseparable from social justice, these contributions highlight how progressive pedagogies (e.g., active learning, authentic research, and equity-oriented assessment) have the potential to broaden access for students historically excluded from quantitative fields. The studies span a variety of conceptual frameworks, introductory and advanced quantitative instruction, and interdisciplinary applications, showcasing how inclusive QR practices can build confidence, agency, and real-world understanding. These articles demonstrate that when …

Quantitative Reasoning In Calculus Iii: Advancing Student Engagement, Confidence, And Aspirations At An Hsi, Tanvir Prince
Numeracy
This study examines the impact of integrating Quantitative Reasoning (QR) into a Calculus III course at a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) on student engagement, confidence, and aspirations. The course is offered at Hostos Community College in the South Bronx. It incorporated QR-focused projects on economic inequality, environmental pollution, and access to healthcare. These projects allowed students to apply advanced calculus concepts to real-world social issues. A pre- and post-survey design was employed to assess changes in students’ mathematical confidence, perceptions of relevance, and career and educational goals. Results showed statistically significant gains in confidence and in the belief that advanced math …

A Comparison Of First- And Continuing-Generation Students Completing A Project-Based Introductory Statistics Course, Susan A. Dumais, Naomi J. Spence, Lisa Dierker
Numeracy
Traditional introductory statistics courses that focus on techniques are not engaging for many college students; this may be especially true for first-generation college students, who generally have more difficulty engaging in the college environment than continuing-generation students. We study first-generation college students’ experiences in a course-based undergraduate research experience called Passion-Driven Statistics. Passion-Driven Statistics is a multidisciplinary, project-based introductory statistics course where students develop their own research topics, analyze publicly available quantitative data, and focus on conceptual understanding of statistics rather than hand calculations. Using pre-course and post-course surveys from students taking Passion-Driven Statistics in colleges throughout the United States, …

Creating A Scorecard—The Case Of How Well Texas Four-Year, Public Universities Serve Texas Latinos?, Arturo Vega
Public Administration Scholarship and Projects
The goal of this inaugural “How-to Working Paper” is to provide a resource to measure performance, effectiveness or simply the underlying dimensions of a concept, perception or attitude. This paper focuses on how to create and use a scorecard or index. The principal audience of these “How-to Working Papers” are upper-level social science disciplines like political science or sociology and master-level graduate students in, again, political science or public administration. But really any university student or civically-minded individual conducting research will benefit from this paper.
Fluid Agency In Ai Systems: A Case For Functional Equivalence In Copyright, Patent, And Tort, Anirban Mukherjee, Hannah H. Chang
Fluid Agency In Ai Systems: A Case For Functional Equivalence In Copyright, Patent, And Tort, Anirban Mukherjee, Hannah H. Chang
Washington Journal of Law, Technology & Arts
Modern artificial intelligence (AI) systems lack human-like consciousness or culpability, yet they exhibit fluid agency: behavior that is (i) stochastic (probabilistic and path-dependent), (ii) dynamic (co-evolving with user interaction), and (iii) adaptive (able to reorient across contexts). Fluid agency generates valuable outputs but collapses attribution, irreducibly entangling human and machine inputs. This fundamental unmappability fractures doctrines that assume traceable provenance—authorship, inventorship, and liability—yielding ownership gaps and moral “crumple zones.”
This Article argues that only functional equivalence stabilizes doctrine. Where provenance is indeterminate, legal frameworks must treat human and AI contributions as equivalent for allocating rights and responsibility—not as a claim …
A Phenomenological Exploration Of Lgbtq+ High School Graduates’ Perspectives On Lgbtq+-Related Legislation, Thomas James Foley
A Phenomenological Exploration Of Lgbtq+ High School Graduates’ Perspectives On Lgbtq+-Related Legislation, Thomas James Foley
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and questioning (LGBTQ+) students’ social, emotional, and academic experiences and outcomes are not on par with their non-LGBTQ+ peers. Understanding how LGBTQ+ young adults experienced high school in a state with LGBTQ+-affirmative education legislation provides insight for counselors and educators to identify policies and practices that support positive outcomes for LGBTQ+ students. This qualitative phenomenological study explored how LGBTQ+-identifying high school graduates made meaning of their experiences in school as they related to LGBTQ+-affirmative education legislation. Interpretive phenomenological analysis (IPA) was used for the research methodology and data analysis process. Results included four themes: (a) …

New Hampshire Child Care Scholarship Program Reaches Young Children Statewide, Harshita Sarup, Jess Carson
Carsey Publications
In this brief, authors Harshita Sarup and Jess Carson offer an update on enrollment in the New Hampshire Care Scholarship Program and describe the age and geographic distribution of enrolled children. Using data from the New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services, the authors confirm that enrollment more than doubled between December 2023—just before program eligibility was expanded in January 2024—and December 2025. More than 5,800 children, two-thirds of whom are under age five, are now served through the program, reaching each county of the state. The authors underscore the importance of continuously tracking program implementation and leveraging local …
The Built Environment And Its Effects On Health Outcomes In Metropolitan Miami, Jared Sanchez Hoehing
The Built Environment And Its Effects On Health Outcomes In Metropolitan Miami, Jared Sanchez Hoehing
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present
Obesity, depression and social isolation rates are an increasing worry in the United States. As planners, we help shape the built environment, which can influence a person’s health outcomes. To assess the effects the built environment has on health outcomes, this paper looks at the percentage of park space, the population density and the national walk index score, combined with several demographic and socioeconomic variables in the Metropolitan Miami region. The study uses the spatial autoregression results of the variables on each health measurement to determine the connection with each health outcome. Despite initial hypotheses that the built environment leads …
Representations And Perceptions Of Inequality Between Resignation And Protest: A Sociological Approach, Toufik Rahmouni
Representations And Perceptions Of Inequality Between Resignation And Protest: A Sociological Approach, Toufik Rahmouni
Revue Marocaine de Droit, d'Economie et de Gestion (Moroccan Journal of Law, Economics and Management)
This article examines social inequalities through lived experience and everyday perceptions. Moroccan society produces multiple forms of inequality embedded in social order, socialization processes, and internalized value systems. Using an empirical survey, the study identifies how respondents describe and classify inequalities and how these perceptions relate to feelings of injustice and relative frustration. It also explores the main attitudes adopted in the face of inequality and discrimination—ranging from resignation and moral/religious endurance to forms of dissent and protest. The analysis suggests that perceived inequality does not automatically translate into open protest; many actors rely on pragmatic cost–benefit reasoning and develop …
The Effect Of Servant Leadership And Psychological Safety On Employee Commitment And Workplace Engagement, Pierce J. Ippolito, Joshua S. Kay, Kevin J. Hurt
The Effect Of Servant Leadership And Psychological Safety On Employee Commitment And Workplace Engagement, Pierce J. Ippolito, Joshua S. Kay, Kevin J. Hurt
The Journal of Values-Based Leadership
This paper presents a conceptual model of servant leadership, psychological safety, work engagement, and individual commitment. Psychological safety is positioned as a causal factor that provides answers addressing why servant leaders have positive effects on individual commitment and work engagement. The depicted model operates under the consideration that commitment and engagement serve two distinct roles based on the study conducted by Hirschfeld and Feild (2000). Theory-based propositions are developed linking servant leadership and psychological safety to individual commitment and work engagement. Finally, the authors provide a framework that may be utilized for future research.

Brute Force Branding: Variations & Repetitions Of The Almighty Dollar Banknote, Rui-Long Monico
Artl@s Bulletin
Abstract: This paper examines the U.S. dollar as a global brand and mythic icon, revealing how its stable aesthetic asserts dominance and infiltrates daily life. Through visual analysis and global comparison, it shows how banknotes are battlegrounds where art, identity, and geopolitics collide—currency as a weapon of soft power and cultural hegemony. The dollar’s visual inertia—ritualized, repeated, reappropriated—cements its supremacy as a symbolic force, where repetition enforces authority and variation sparks both resistance and conformity. Banknotes emerge as tools of statecraft and vessels of collective memory, as reflected in the author’s bespoke creation accompanying this study.

Who You Gonna Call? Talk Radio As Therapy And As A Marker Of Social Change In Ireland, Finola Doyle O'Neill
Who You Gonna Call? Talk Radio As Therapy And As A Marker Of Social Change In Ireland, Finola Doyle O'Neill
Irish Communication Review
In the Irish context, the radio talk show has long constituted a distinctive cultural institution, evolving from early programmes such as Dear Frankie, The Gay Byrne Show, The Ryan Line, and Liveline into a significant public forum for the expression of personal narratives, collective opinion, and emotional resonance (O’Sullivan, 2005). Over time, this genre has undergone a notable transformation—from functioning as a secular analogue to the Catholic confessional to becoming an increasingly therapeutic outlet for listeners. This evolution is emblematic of wider sociocultural shifts in Ireland, particularly the waning influence of institutional religion (Inglis, 2000) and the disintegration of traditional …

Cancer Literacy And Social Determinants Of Health: An Epidemiological Analysis Of Trust, Digital Engagement, And Healthcare Utilization In Cancer Information Seeking, Kimberly Leeann Hazel
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The rise of online health information has increased access to cancer resources but also amplified misinformation, creating trust gaps that threaten prevention, treatment, and health equity. This study examined how trust in cancer information sources, online information-seeking, and healthcare perceptions relate among U.S. adults. Guided by the health information seeking behavior, the socioecological model, and the structural influence model of health communication, data from the 2022 Health Information National Trends Survey (N = 6,197) were analyzed with logistic regression, mediation, and moderation modeling, controlling for demographics. Trust in government agencies predicted greater cancer information seeking (odds ratio [OR] = 1.94, …

Ai Companions And Adolescent Social Relationships: Benefits, Risks, And Bidirectional Influences, Xiaoran Sun, Yunqi Wang, Brandon Mcdaniel
Health Services and Informatics Research
AI companions (AI-Cs)—rapidly emerging conversational agents built on large language models that can provide personalized humanlike companionship—create unprecedented opportunities for adolescents to form emotional bonds with nonhuman entities during a critical period for social development. In this article, we discuss the interplay between adolescents' use of AI-Cs and their social relationships based on theoretical hypotheses driving research on digital communication and adolescent well-being. We explore the benefits and risks of AI-Cs to social development based on the stimulation hypothesis and the displacement hypothesis: AI-Cs can provide safe spaces for identity exploration and emotional expression, potentially building skills that transfer to …

Read My Lips: No New Constructs! Construct Proliferation As A Threat To The Future Of I-O Psychology, Nathan A. Bowling, Valerie I. Sessa, Jonathan A. Shaffer, George C. Banks
Department of Psychology Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
Industrial and organizational (I-O) psychology recognizes dozens of different constructs, including several individual differences, environmental variables, job attitudes, and work-related behaviors. It is, of course, necessary to retain a variety of constructs in order to adequately capture the complexities, subtleties, and diversity of work-related phenomena. But do the many constructs recognized by I-O psychologists all serve a useful purpose? Or has our field been too eager to welcome redundant, unnecessary constructs into the fold? And if I-O psychology has embraced too many unnecessary constructs, then what—if anything—should we do about it? In the current focal article, we first discuss when …
Employment Stability And Security Of Low-Wage Workers In The United States, Mathieu Despard, Guangli Zhang, Stephen Roll
Employment Stability And Security Of Low-Wage Workers In The United States, Mathieu Despard, Guangli Zhang, Stephen Roll
Center for Social Development Research
One quarter of workers in the United States make $35,000 or less, and nearly half of these are between 35 and 64 years old. Forty percent are caring for children in the home. As temporary and gig working arrangements become increasingly common, this brief explores the stability of work and income for low-wage workers. The analyses draw upon data from the Workforce Economic Inclusion and Mobility survey administered to a nationally representative sample of U.S. workers earning less than 250% of the federal poverty line. The findings from this work have direct implications for employment practices and labor policies.

A Policy Reversal As Structural Break: A Lesson From China’S Land Lease Financing For Infrastructure, Yilin Hou, Lin Li, Lei Shao
Center for Policy Research
Land-based revenues as a fiscal instrument to finance infrastructure tie public investment to real estate markets, where demand fluctuations cause fiscal consequences. This paper takes policy reversals as structural breaks and examines their impacts on infrastructure investment. We dissect China’s 2016 policy reversal that disallowed developers to finance land purchase with debt, causing sharp declines in local government land revenues, slashing their fiscal base for infrastructure investment. Using prefecture-level panel data and continuous difference-in-differences identification, we estimate the reversal reduced land-lease revenues by 55%. Two-stage least squares estimates suggest a 10% land-revenue decline translates into 6.6% investment reduction. Decomposing the …

Examining The Impact Of Racial Microaggressions And Psychological Distress In Latine Individuals: A Focus On Ptsd, Anxiety, Depression, And Stress, Melanie Garcia, Yajairy Cabrales, Miguel A. Castano, Richard Chang, Gloria Wong-Padoongpatt
Spectra Undergraduate Research Journal
Latine individuals in the United States face distinct mental health challenges due to unique stressors, including systemic racism and discrimination. While research has established that racial microaggressions—such as daily slights, insults, and invalidations—negatively impact the psychological well-being of people of color, there remains limited scholarship specifically focused on Latine communities. This study examines different types of racial microaggressions—such as invisibility, criminality, and sexualization—as predictors of psychological distress among Latine individuals. A sample of 434 Latine participants completed measures assessing their experiences with racial microaggressions, as well as symptoms of depression, anxiety, stress, and trauma. Four multiple linear regression models were …

Quantitative Analysis Of Psychological Safety, Resilience, And Intraminority Solidarity As Predictors Of Racial Trauma Distress Among Bipoc College Students, Miguel A. Castano, Richard Chang, Gloria Wong-Padoongpatt
Spectra Undergraduate Research Journal
Racial trauma distress is when post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms occur due to repeated and cumulative experiences of racism and can negatively impact Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC). Consensus in research findings strongly suggests that BIPOC students are more likely to experience racism on university campuses than non-BIPOC students. To mitigate some of these negative outcomes, existing research has shown that psychological safety, resilience, and intraminority solidarity are protective factors for BIPOC students experiencing race-related distress. However, little is known about the frequency of racial trauma distress among BIPOC college students and how these variables may protect against racial …
Constitutional Time: The Temporal Dimension Of Precedent In Consitutional Jurisprudence, Laura A. Cisneros
Constitutional Time: The Temporal Dimension Of Precedent In Consitutional Jurisprudence, Laura A. Cisneros
University of Memphis Law Review
The role of time in constitutional precedent lies at the heart of judicial decision making. While there is a consensus on the importance of precedent, the modalities of its application remain a subject of intense debate within legal circles. At the core of this discourse lies a fundamental tension: the imperative to maintain fidelity to established precedent, thereby ensuring legal stability and predictability, versus the necessity to re-evaluate and potentially overturn precedent in response to evolving societal norms or innovative constitutional interpretations. This dichotomy presents a fundamental challenge to the Supreme Court, requiring a delicate balance between continuity and adaptability …
