In What Ways Do Political Factors And Relations Of Power Interfere With The Legal Protection Of Human Rights In Cameroon?, Nelson Agbor

School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences Theses

ABSTRACTTitle: In what ways do political factors and relations of power interfere with the legal protection of human rights in Cameroon? In November 2016, a socio-political crisis erupted in the Northwest and Southwest regions of Cameroon, mainly due to the marginalisation of English-speaking populations in these two regions. This crisis has since metamorphosed into an armed conflict between government forces and armed separatist groups operating in these warring regions. The conflict has resulted in severe human rights abuses committed both by the government forces and armed separatist groups operating in these regions. The conflict, also known as the Anglophone crisis, began …

Legal Paradoxes Of Transition: Transitional Justice And The Rule Of Law Between Nürnberg And Saddam Hussein Trials, Rasha Abdelsamea Ahmed Baghdadi Jan 2026

Legal Paradoxes Of Transition: Transitional Justice And The Rule Of Law Between Nürnberg And Saddam Hussein Trials, Rasha Abdelsamea Ahmed Baghdadi

Theses and Dissertations

ABSTRACT

This thesis critically examines the legal paradoxes embedded within transitional justice (TJ) discourse, using the Nürnberg and Saddam Hussein trials as case studies to interrogate the complex relationship between justice and the rule of law in TJ discourse. It highlights the inherent tension between forward-looking societal reforms and the pursuit of backward-looking justice, challenging the foundational assumptions of TJ as a universal tool for justice and peace. It also questions the validity and credibility of "transition" as a phase between the past and the future. It contends that TJ, driven by Western liberal epistemic foundations, functions as an exclusionary …

Balls, Boots, And Bats: Indo-Fijian Women Reimagining Sport, Masculinity, And Identity In The Global South, Rohini Balram Jan 2026

Balls, Boots, And Bats: Indo-Fijian Women Reimagining Sport, Masculinity, And Identity In The Global South, Rohini Balram

Journal of Global South Sport Studies

In Fiji, physicality and hegemonic masculinity are largely defined by rugby and the military, institutions dominated by Indigenous Fijian men, who are predominantly Christian, often marginalising other races, genders, religions, and sports. While research in the Global South has examined intersections of race and gender, little is known about how masculinity is understood across different sports, sporting icons, and contexts—particularly from the perspective of South Asian migrant women in Oceania with hybrid identities. This paper investigates how young Indo-Fijian women negotiate masculinity, identity, and agency through sport, Bollywood cinema, social media, and cultural narratives. Drawing on a year-long, multi-method participatory …

From Private Custody To Public Policy: The Politics Of State Responsibility For Post-Divorce Abandoned Children (Hadhanah) In Serang, Indonesia, Ali Faisal, Naf’An Tarihoran, B Syafuri, Nurul Ma’Rifah

Jurnal Wacana Politik

This article examines how hadhanah (child custody and care) can be reframed from a private family matter into a public policy issue, positioning the state as a responsible actor when children become abandoned after divorce. Drawing on a normative–juridical and qualitative socio-legal analysis of Islamic family law, national legislation, and municipal policy instruments, the study uses Serang City as an illustrative case of policy urgency. The findings demonstrate a systematic implementation gap between Indonesia’s constitutional mandate to care for abandoned children and local-level governance practice: (1) a legal–administrative gap, where court-based custody decisions and parental obligations do not automatically trigger …
