Archaeological Analysis Of An Early Mississippian Frontier Structure In Southwestern Virginia, Sophie Husslein May 2021

Archaeological Analysis Of An Early Mississippian Frontier Structure In Southwestern Virginia, Sophie Husslein

Honors Theses

Ely Mound (44LE12) is a significant prehistoric frontier site located in Lee County, Virginia. Frontier sites are important in understanding processes of cultural hybridity and the formation of social hierarchies. Through an analysis of artifacts recovered from a household structure during a 2019 excavation, this research explores Ely’s function on the Mississippian cultural frontier, and discusses its relationship to the Carter Robinson site located within the county (44LE10). Finally, I conclude that the occupants of Ely Mound were a local people engaging with select Mississipian cultural practices and suggest that this site could be an example of Mississippianization.

Brain Drain In Mississippi, Clifford Adam Conner May 2021

Brain Drain In Mississippi, Clifford Adam Conner

Honors Theses

Brain drain is the out-migration of educated individuals from an area. It is a problem with which Mississippi is overly familiar. This thesis uses data gathered from a survey of 965 respondents to identify who is leaving the state and for what reasons. The data gathered suggest confirmation that brain drain is an issue for the state, with roughly two-thirds of respondents having left the state or seriously considering doing so. The impetus for this varies with each individual, but respondents underscore economic and societal factors within Mississippi as pushing them away from the state. Quality of life factors are …

The Effects Of Spousal Cues On Candidate Religious And Ideological Perceptions, Joseph Murphy Iii May 2021

The Effects Of Spousal Cues On Candidate Religious And Ideological Perceptions, Joseph Murphy Iii

Honors Theses

The importance of religion, or lack thereof, in determining vote choice has seen a growing body of literature in the last few decades, especially in Europe and the United States. Given the way religion has been ingrained in American society since its inception, it is not surprising that political candidates would use language cues as a way to signal that they share certain beliefs with their voters. These cues do not always have to be uttered by the political candidates themselves as, for example, the spouses of political candidates are often deployed as surrogates for the candidate. The experiment I …

'Here We Start And In Jerusalem We Meet:' The Motivational And Organizational Influences Of Israel's Statehood Ontransnational Salafi Jihad, Charlotte Armistead

Honors Theses

The Israeli occupation of Palestine and its impact on the proliferation and longevity of transnational Salafi jihad is largely underestimated in current literature. In this thesis, I argue that Palestine, defined as both the nation and physical borders before the Balfour Declaration, largely contributed to the twentieth century revival of transnational Salafi jihad and is used by both Al Qaeda and ISIS as liberation and annihilation movements, respectively. In order to assess the motivational and organizational influences of the Israeli occupation of Palestine on transnational Salafi jihad, I examine the works of Abdullah Azzam, a selection of Osama Bin Laden’s …

(Wp 2021-04) John Tomer's Reconceptualization Of The Concept Of Human Capital, John B. Davis May 2021

(Wp 2021-04) John Tomer's Reconceptualization Of The Concept Of Human Capital, John B. Davis

Economics Working Papers

This chapter examines John Tomer’s contributions to our understanding of the concept of human capital. Tomer criticized the standard mainstream view of the concept as narrowly focused on education and training and as seeing investments in human capital as having “an individual, cognitive, and machine-like nature.” A broader concept included attention to the people’s noncognitive development, and employed both social capital and personal capital concepts. This produces a more expansive view of human development, allows for a humanistic psychological perspective, and supports a multi-dimensional, Maslovian understanding of the hierarchy of human needs. Tomer framed his policy thinking regarding investments in …

Engaging Secondary Students: The Beneficial Intersection Of Young Adult And Classic Literature, Jacob Bonetti May 2021

Engaging Secondary Students: The Beneficial Intersection Of Young Adult And Classic Literature, Jacob Bonetti

All NMU Master's Theses

The positive attributes of both classic and young adult (YA) literature are significant, even when read separately. However, the benefits of pairing classic and YA literature together are even greater; yet, teachers often avoid integrating YA literature for a variety of reasons (Velazquez). Both administrators and the parents of students may question the use of YA literature, but that doesn’t mean educators should give up on using it as an instructional tool. Many of those in opposition to using YA literature would still agree that students struggle to find motivation to read classic literature. Students often have difficulty comprehending the …

Parental Autonomy-Granting And Depressive Symptoms For Adolescents With Chronic Conditions, Ashley Berghoff

Human Development and Family Sciences Undergraduate Honors Theses

There is currently a gap in literature regarding the transition from pediatric to adult healthcare for adolescents with chronic conditions, particularly relating to mental health and autonomy. This study aims to address this gap by looking specifically through the lens of parental autonomy-granting. This study uses data from 8,783 individuals in the AddHealth dataset to identify whether parental autonomy-granting has a mediating role between chronic health conditions and depressive symptomology, and to measure if adolescents with chronic conditions reported higher levels of depressive symptoms than their healthy counterparts. Using a t-test, it was found that youth with chronic conditions in …

The Efficacy Of Drug-Free Workplace Programs Within Small, Medium, And Large Business Organizations, Velvet Street

Education Doctoral

Employee substance use has impacted organizational structure, resulting in problems such as poor performance, absenteeism, financial loss and workers compensation claim cost as a result of safety risks. Driven by federal and state legislation to provide a safe and healthy work environment, employers have implemented non-integrated and integrated deterrence/support programs for reducing the harmful effects of employee drug use. The problem that was addressed by the current study is that organizations face a legal obligation to address employee substance use and must also do so to protect their financial solvency. The hypotheses for the current study pertained to whether there …

Evaluating Urban Parks Accessibility And Equity: A Case Study Of Hartford, Ct And New Haven, Ct, Natalie Roach, Mara Tu

Honors Scholar Theses

Public parks provide cities with environmental benefits, positive health effects, recreational opportunities, community building, educational spaces, and public amenities. However, certain populations have been systematically denied their fair share of these benefits because of unjust practices in the creation and maintenance of urban parks. With a lens of environmental justice, the goal of this research was to assess park quality and accessibility of two Connecticut cities, Hartford and New Haven, by gathering publicly available information as well as using GIS tools.

The Trust for Public Land (TPL) has an existing ParkScore rating system that evaluates the quality of a city’s …

Factors That Influence Hispanic Female Pursuit Of An Associate Of Arts Degree At A Hispanic Serving Institution, Maria Victoria Guadarrama

Theses and Dissertations

This study was conducted to investigate the possible influencing factors involved with the Hispanic female population that lives on the Texas and Mexico border and how those factors influence the completion of an Associate of Arts degree at a community college. “Presence in higher education is increasing by all minority groups, except for one; while other ethnic groups—including African Americans—have gradually increased their college graduation rates, Hispanics have seen almost no such progress in three decades” (Montalban, 2015). The border area in southernmost Texas is severely limited by lack of education, parental communication, language background, financial problems, and other influential …

Creating future mentors that help guide Latina students may impact Latina students and their retention rates as well as encourage them to go beyond an undergraduate degree. To serve as a mentor, staff and faculty should be educated in the …

Skin Deep: Body Modification And Agentic Identities Among Women With Skin Conditions, Christopher Walonski May 2021

Skin Deep: Body Modification And Agentic Identities Among Women With Skin Conditions, Christopher Walonski

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study explores processes of identity construction among women who have skin conditions and body modifications. Analyzing seven semi-structured qualitative interviews, the author examines how individuals affected by skin conditions employ body modification practices to organize their identities and promote feelings of agency across both personal and social domains. Engaging a Bakhtinian dialogic lens, the author argues that body modification may operate as a de-stigmatization strategy that supports individuals with skin conditions in cultivating a sense of self-determination and bodily sovereignty. Shaped by grounded theory, this study’s findings trace relationships between body modification and the development of agentic identities among …
